Report: Phils Looking At Blanton
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, July 16, 2008 12:06 PM
Jim Salisbury today dropped Joe Blanton as someone in whom the Phillies are showing interest. Blanton is 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA this season, carrying a 77 ERA+. That’s what Adam Eaton has.
For his career, Blanton is an even 100 in the ERA+ category. Absolutely average.
Don’t do it, Phils. It’s not worth it.

wasn’t there rumors that we were going to give up Vic for this guy in the off season? no way, i pass on this guy, not sure he really improves our situation.
July 16th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Blanton is not a big improvement over Myers. And, as Tim has laid out in recent posts, not what we need.
BTW, it looks like even the Yankees are scared of A.J. Burnett’s contract. He isn’t coming here anyway, but if the freakin’ Yankees think his contract is so bad that they don’t want to touch him, then we shouldn’t even be considering it.
I fear there are no answers this year. We must make next year our year.
July 16th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Ill take it if hes really really cheap. it looks like theyre scurred off burnett.
July 16th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Forget going after many of these “B” list starters we are currently linked to. Are Blanton, Maddox or Burnett for that matter much better than Happ, Myers or Kendrick?? Their stats say it is a wash. I think the Phils should go after a big bat. If we are going to trade prospects from an already thin system, go get a big bat that will cost some $ and just try to freekin’ outscore everyone. Maybe add an arm to the pen, but getting a guy like Ichiro or Holladay will make the lineup potent. Rollins is going to start hitting, Utley will come back around and Howard is heating up. If we can score 7-8 runs per game we might be able to get buy with the current make-up of the staff. But definitely DON’T go wasting prospects on guys like Blanton, Arroyo or Byrd!!
July 16th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
You need to add depth tahts all. if they werent going to get sabathia then you need to add depth. thats the only thing left now. one more of their starters will need a break or replacement or somehting you need to add to the mix there.
hey, theyre NOT going to score 7-8 runs pergame against lefitimate starting pitching. its not going to happen ok. thats why THEY need pitching.
July 16th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Hopefully there is someone out there that has not been mentioned. None of these guys are worth much and I am not sure other than Geoff’s comment about depth that they would add anything else to our team.

July 16th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I think the situation with Burnett is pretty clear, his numbers are not consistent and outside of the obvious injury concern his contract situation is too unpredictable, so we’ll take him but will not give more than a compensatory package and not the one Toronto coverts. Wouldn’t rule out a deal for Bedard just yet although I do question what adding another rotation filler will do past fan the flames and result in us eating Eaton’s salary bringing our wasted salary up to $30m in 3 years of money spent that doesn’t end up on the diamond (Garcia, trading Helms and eating Eaton’s salary).
Gillick has to be aggressive here, the options are limited and the way the deal goes down and the atmosphere it creates will be just as important as the incoming player. The message coming from the FO has to be this is the guy that will take your spot on the roster not here’s the guy who’s going to pick up the slack for you.
July 16th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Give Carrasco or Mazone a shot. Hell, I would give Savery a run. I think the number one thing to do is protect prospects from deals for B starters. I dont think there are really any “A” staters that are worth the trade, not Bedard or Burnett. I think Harden was the only one worth the trade bounty, and becasue he is ot a rental player.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Yes, they lost the chance to win the National League when they failed to get Rich harden. what did we say like the whole firs thalf? no excuses anymore. they failed to act, now its more excuses again.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
This all depends on who we give up, Billy Beane is gonna rob us though.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Rental players are not as bad as they sound, the deal can work in your favour in the next draft. Burnett is idea if he does opt out of his contract and we can acquire him for a smaller package, giving up a high potential but not elite prospect and a couple of long shots for a guy who’ll give you a short-term boost and net two high picks in the coming draft is just good work by a front office when they can get a deal like that done.
By all means give Mazone a shot but lets get Carrasco ready to win his job in the rotation in ST. Savery and Outman would make nice additions to the pen before being transitioned into starters if needed, Outman’s already being transitioned into a reliever. We do need a bonifide number 2 because the Moyer/Kendrick duo is great at the back of the rotation frustrating the opponents but there has to be something concrete in between and unfortunately were not in a position we can continue to experiment.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
We should go after the O’s lefty pitcher who pitched last night in the All Star game
July 16th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Don’t trade for this guy we already have pitchers like him in Myers and Eaton he’s no improvement…Just trade for Burnett or Bedard already fucking cheap ass organization.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
gaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Joe Blanton????? No! I agree with others, plan should be to go with Hamels, Happ, Myers, Moyer and Kendrick and either get a bat to replace Taguchi and wait till the off season to get the #2 we need.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
should read, “and get a bat to replace taguchi plus wait till the offseason to get the #2 we need.”
July 16th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
What about benson or re-aquiring Garcia in augast when he should be ready for a return?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Benson is a gamble but I’d be in favor of getting Garcia.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Benson hasn’t looked good in the minors and Garcia he wouldn’t be a bad pick up but alot of other teams are interested in him and i doubt they’ll go for him.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
As much as you guys dont like the idea of getting Blanton, he’s one of our only options left. We’ve begged for a starter but afterall, beggers cant be chosers.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Rental players are not that great, if you dont win a championship and if a team with a top 15 draft pick signs them. then you do not get a 1st round draft pick, you get sanwich picks 3-5th rounds which isnt half bad but they tend to take longer to develop. I would like to see the Phils delve deeper to Latin America for prospects
July 16th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
KRIS BENSON ISNT GOING TO HELP US AT ALL, DAMNIT!
July 16th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Blanton would be better than a lot of guys on the B list. theyre basically saying that theyre going after the B list now.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
phils should look at aquiring paul maholm from pittsburgh
July 16th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Billy Beane will ask for a kings ransom to get Blanton. It’s really not worth it, we’re better off hoping Myers comes around and Happ pans out.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
well, at least hes under contract next year too.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
why pick up a guy who’s not any better than the slop that you already have. i wouldn’t trade so taguchi for this guy…..ok, i would trade him. but nobody else
July 16th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Put Myers and Happ in the rotation and place Eaton in the pen for long relief/mop up. Go get another bat and release So (maybe they can get a crate of tongue depressors or a box of sunflower seeds for the dugout for him). Roll the dice that Myers can figure it out and Happ is ready to make this jump perminently. He has looked fairly sharp in his 2 starts and not overwhelmed by the situation thus far. The Phils are going to have to outscore people and pray the starters can give them 6 innings every night and keep them in the game. When they were hot at the end of June and built their lead in the division it was that formula at work.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I dont know that theyre going to get someone whos better. This guy would be good for depth and im ok with it, but you need MORE than him. not just him. that cant be your big guy.
ill bet the phillies even try to run him out there second and act like hes their number two guy, just watch.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Blanton is OK, but not worth trading top prospects for..it would just be adding another arm .. and if we want to do that, lets add local guys
I know some guys on my college team that could throw about 85 mph…
July 16th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
I saw this coming last week – it’s going to happen, and it better happen for cheap. There is no one else available. This is what they did last year, and it barely got us to the NLDS.
I told you this team is not a good team unless they make a NOTABLE improvement within their pitching staff. This is an improvement, but it is not NOTABLE. Therefore, “the Phillies are just not a . . . .” Exactly.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I saw this coming in the beginning of the season, but i thought blanton would be more valued and cost more because HE WOULD HAVE, YKNOW, A GOOD SEASON! but he isnt.
hes better than adam eaton and he can get you through 7 innings. in that way hes more effective than jamie moyer. not in terms of ERA and runs though.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Don M..Im training for hardball because its too late this year…but, I can throw like reagan-era sinkers and a changeup, maybe i can improve the team.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
the other pitches arent as effective as those two. the slider doesnt move a lot and the curveball isnt accurate. but at least the sinker/changeup combo is down pat.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Im up for any move that improves the team without packing the future… If Burrell is going to stay, you can move Golson… Donald doesn’t have a spot here, so he can be moved… I’d like them to keep their young pitchers, but that is what Beane always goes after…
It will be interesting to see what, if anything, they do
July 16th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Geoff… I can throw a Nixon Era fastball, it is very tricky to hit but eventaully will get caught. Therefore I am an improvement over eaton.
Also you realize Swindle can throw a Dwight D. Eisenhauer curve?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I just realize that my political comaprisons to baseball are obnoxious and stupid. I apologize. Screw eaton
July 16th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
I throw a Bill Clinton change-up.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Why not put Myers back in the Rotation with Durbin and get Fuentes. He would be worth more than the starters available and cost less.
Fuentes/Romero/Lidge/Gordon/Condrey/Seanez/Eaton
Hamels/Moyer/Kendrick/Durbin/Myers
Are any of our minor league catchers a better bet than Carlos Ruiz. He still has options I believe.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Did I foget Lidge there as well, OK dump Eaton to the minors.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
good stuff.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Phillies rotation is screwed. Blanton? Seriously? better off signing Freddy Garcia
July 16th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
No you didn’t forget Lidge, You forgot Madson…buy yeah your right dump Eaton
July 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
What’s Terry Mulholland doing nowadays?….maybe we sign him….tell him that we’d rather have him walk guys than give up a homerun…then just pick them off of first everytime….it’s a huge upgrade over eaton
July 16th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I’ll be honest……any move they make after releasing Adam eaton will improve our team, guys.
I’d take happ over Blanton.
RELEASE EATON!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
If another person starts with this RELEASE CARLOS RUIZ crap…
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20080711_Phillies_Notes__Ruiz_s_catching_job_safe_despite_struggles_at_plate.html
The highlights of this are:
Charlie Manuel is aware that Carlos Ruiz has been in a terrible slump for almost two months.
But the Phillies’ manager also knows he likes Ruiz’s defense and his ability to handle the pitching staff. He also knows that if people are screaming about the impact the No. 8 hitter is having on the Phils’ offense, it probably means the first seven guys in the lineup aren’t doing as much as they should.
and
“It’s awfully hard to switch out a catcher midyear,” assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle said yesterday before the Phillies’ 4-1 win over St. Louis at Citizens Bank Park. “He’s a catcher who knows our staff. They like him. They’re comfortable. He’s catching and throwing well.”
In fact, Ruiz has a 3.56 catcher’s ERA – the best catcher’s ERA in the National League.
……….. .. . .. .. ..
July 16th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Ruiz catches hamels most of the time. That explains it.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Geoff, who caught Hamels Sunday? Not for nothing, but that wasn’t Hamels best outing.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Coste did I think.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Gillicks trade history is up on MLBTR….interesting
July 16th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Yeah, he did…that’s my point exactly. Coste hasn’t been looking too sharp at the dish either. Our catcher spot is going to be in turmoil until next season. That’s just the way it is. I’d be okay with Ruiz and his mandoza line if the rest of the team was hitting.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Yes it is. Coste shouldnt get the majority of the PT but he has been forced to because of ruiz sucking at the plate. they need a legit everyday catcher, and they dont have it. is marson? probably but we need to find out.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
That is part of the reason the bullpen has had so much success too.. He can’t hit… but as the # 8 hitter, he shouldn’t be expected to.
Tony La Russa has the same view of catchers, that it is their main job to handle the pitching staff… anything they do offensively is just a bonus
July 16th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Yeah, but do you really think it’s a good idea to throw this kid out there with no major league experience to handle a pitching staff he doesn’t know, against batters he doesn’t know?
July 16th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I’ve always said I’d take V-tek over Piazza any day. I want a defensive catcher that can handle a pitching staff not an offensive catcher. If my defensive catcher can hit, then that fucking rules.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
If ruiz stabilizes you can wait until ST when its the ideal time to make that move to go with marson. if he gets worse then something has to be done.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
seriously though, im sick of that guy
July 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Yeah, Geoff. Right now just isn’t a good time to start playing Marson. I mean I am ridiculously frustrated with Ruiz, but I’m much more frustrated with Jimmy Rollins.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Hey, can any baseball savy people pull up Blanton’s stats vs the Rangers this season in comparison to the rest of the league? I’m wondering if his poor stats are mostly because of an incredible Ranger’s offense?
July 16th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
unrelated, but AP released the olympic baseball roster, and it had marson and donald on it.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
0-2, 5.54 ERA
13 innings
17 hits
10 runs
1 HR
1 K
July 16th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
That’s against the Rangers this year.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Hm, that’s not the issue then. He must suck.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Blanton’s stats vs. AL leaders:
Angels:
0-1, 2.57 – 7IP, 3K, 1BB, 3ER
White Sox:
1-0, 1.29 – 7IP, 5K, 2BB, 1ER
Boston:
1-1, 4.08 – 17.2IP, 13K, 6BB, 8ER
July 16th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Phil, it appears his stats are mostly due to shitty offensive National League teams.
Arizona:
0-1, 24.00 – 3IP, 1K, 3BB, 8ER
San Fran:
0-1, 15.75 – 4IP, 3K, 1BB, 7ER
I don’t know what this says, but I’m going to have to say that this move isn’t as bad as it seems. I mean, for all of you that think our offense is so great, he shut us down.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Blanton’s Inter-league ERA in 3 games is 10.29. I just think he’s better against teams he’s familiar with.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Yeah, he’s not familiar with the NL East.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Does anyone else here think matt hollidays numbers are a bit fraudeulent and that he wont be as good on another team?
July 16th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Yes, he does play in the most hitter friendly park in MLB. I bet his numbers would even be depleted in our bandbox. He’s still a great player though.
July 16th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Yeah. Hell get overpaid out the wazoo when his time comes
July 16th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
And then he’ll be a disappointment. One thing you can’t knock about the guy is that he knows how to hit and make contact.
July 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I see you guys are trying to look for a silver lining with someone as bland as Blanton. (chuckle) He’s certainly not on my wishlist.
Me? I’m looking forward to seeing Myers’ return on July 23rd against the Mets at Shea Stadium. If he pitches up to his capability, we solve one problem in the rotation. Now about Eaton……? My feeling is Happ will be recall for the 5th spot when needed.
BTW, I wonder what kind of reception Utley will receive at Shea Stadium?
July 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
when needed? you mean, like, next time the spot is up? because eaton should not be allowed to go again. hes done
July 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Sign Sexson. He is batting .344 against LP this year. Thats the least you could do.
July 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Very disappointed and kinda surprised the Phils didnt waive Adam Eaton today. We all joke around about him, but seriously. If he ever pitches for us again, I’ll be truely angry at Pat Gillick and Co. There’s no excuse for it. If they are serious about winning he has to go. At least send a message to the guys.
July 16th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
yes, i second that he should be banished. never again do i need to see eaton
July 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
They won’t cut Eaton this year. Happ will probably take his spot while Eaton gets sent down to the minors like Myers or goes to the DL.
July 16th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
How about this scenario…Just bring up Carlos Carrasco from Reading. Let him be the number 5 guy and develop him. Give Myers one more shot and if he blows it again, he is gone next year. Happ can take his place. Eaton is a waste of time and money. They need to release him or put him on the fake DL list like last year. Gordon is on that list this year saying he is hurt but he is there because he cant pitch strikes.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Carrasco coming up now could destroy him, remember Gavin Floyd? CC’s well placed to have a strong end to the minor league season and then can come up and taste the Philly clubhouse in preparation for fighting for a spot in the rotation next year. Happ’ll get a look in but the back of the rotations tough to crack with Eaton there, Moyer and Kendrick finally slotted at the back of the rotation can really bog other teams down if we can solve the middle of the rotation and that’s going to take going out there and getting someone.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
LETS GET PUDGE FROM DETROIT AND SHIP RUIZ BACK TO PANAMA. I WOULD RATHER SEE WOLF BACK THEN HAVE EATON
July 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Have you seen how much green Pudge is making?? We have our hands tied behind the plate at the moment but Marson brings some promise for next year. It would be great to send Ruiz down for the rest of the minor league season but there aren’t an offensive upgrades on the market to take his place.
The Eaton situation will be addressed it’ll be unlikely he’ll start more than a couple if any games for us but we have to try and find a way of not having to eat his salary.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
It would give the bat you need and better catcher. Plus he would be a rental, and it would keep him away from the Marlins.
I would agree with Eaton not starting again this year.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Does it really matter the Phillies are still not making the post season so bring up everybody from the minors.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
The Mets will finish behind Atlanta by seasons end LOL!!!!!!! The collapse last year was mild. Pedro will not be around (disable list) after Sundays game yet again. I would not put alot of faith in the rest of the staff especially with wagner closing.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Dude, go hang out on the mets board. loser.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Well then I quess you expect the Phillies to come in 3rd.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Besides Hammels can you tell me who else you expect to scare the Mets? Kendrick and his great ERA? To bad they really didn’t trade him for Kobayashi you might of been better off.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I dont know where the Phils will end up and neither do you.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
The Phillies and Mets are both solid teams and whoever gets on a roll in September will pull it out again. I dont think its about fearing a pitcher. This isnt little league when the coach put your ass in RF mets08, and you were scared that you were going to get hit by a ball thrown by the “big” kid.
July 16th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Blanton blows. If we get him cheap, that’s one thing. I would take him over Eaton (even though I have bad feeling Blanton would get really lit up at the bank).
July 16th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Lets make a play for Ian Snell….he’s got electric stuff and would benefit from an offense that can score a little (sometimes)
July 16th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
yeah i like snell, he might be a number 2 with his potential
July 16th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
He would probably be the Phillies #1 cause their staff is bad!!!
July 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I agree.
July 16th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Snell has been awful this year, but I think he is a better buy low candidate than Blanton. Snell has higher upside and would have more club controlled seasons than Blanton. Snell isn’t the answer to the Phillies starting rotation issues though.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
i also haven’t heard anything about snell being available. i like the guy but he’s having a bad season and i don’t think the pirates are looking to trade him anyway, they’re busy taking offers on nady and bay.
i would rather have happ take eaton’s spot than trade for blanton. unless we got rid of myers and eaton, and got blanton dirt cheap, i don’t want anything to do with him.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
yeah they locked him up for a few years so i doubt theyll move him at this stage.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
happ is better than eaton anyways so hell be in the rotation when its his turn again. they basically admitted that th eother day
July 17th, 2008 at 12:01 am
Yeah, snell would be our #1…you Yankees/Mets fans are so dumb. I guess Hamels sucks, right?
July 17th, 2008 at 12:17 am
I hope you Yankees fans know that as long as Stray Rod is on your team, you’ll never win anything! Fucking guy LEFT the All-Star Game! Was plowing Madonna’s beat snatch worth bailing on your team mates? Well……..ok!
July 17th, 2008 at 12:49 am
i love how mets fans come on phillies message boards just because there team is winning some games, you dont know whats going to happen the rest of the season and either do we. Did u really think your precious mets were gonna choke at the end of the season last year? Yea i didn’t think so, so save all your comments until the end of the season.
p.s – you talk about kendrick being so bad but when he started against you guys you only scored one run right? thats what i thought
July 17th, 2008 at 3:13 am
How does getting a guy who’s 5-12 help our pitching problems? Keep this loser on the West Coast
July 17th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Why don’t we just trade away all our prospects for an 11-2 Kyle Lohse while we’re at it? (Shaking head in disbelief…)
What have we done for the baseball gods to forsake us? They’re pissed!
St Louis pitching coach = Coach of the Year! Give that man a raise!
July 17th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Ok it’s getting ridiculous now with all these trolls on the board, how about a systems set up on here were you have to have an account to post ? Then you can block these trolls from commenting as soon as they start chatting bullsh*t. I have better things to do than argue with sad low life Mets fans
July 17th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Yankeefan,
Your a low life piece of shit. Talk to your rival fans if your gonna talk shit. Seriously, atleast know what the fuck your talking about instead of taking every chance to get to try to insult the Phils when your bitch ass overpaid team, is 5.5 out of the wild card spot.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Just ignore them, there doesnt have to be tit-for-tat for everything they say. Thats one of the ways that the media controls us anyway. By creating only two sides to an issue and getting people to argue with each other back and forth to no end. meanwhile, there are actually dozens of sides or opinion that are shut out.
besides, new yorkers are some of the most controlled people in america, so feeding into their desire to argue to no end is a waste of time. if they cared at all about themselves they would put michael bloomberg in prison for all of the things hes done.
but since this is a sports blog all im going to say is that im maintaining my policy of not addressing the new york scum that comes in here.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Anyway… this trade for Blanton is looking more and more likely to happen.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:09 am
How so TJ? I really hope it doesn’t. I will go down to CBP, storm into his office, and punch him in the fucking head for getting Blanton over Harden.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Yeah I cant believe they screwed up the Harden thing. Im so pissed about that. Blanton will be better than Eaton because noone is as bad as Eaton. like i said earlier, rotation depth is all he gives. innings eater.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:12 am
He’s a good #5 starter. Kendrick and Moyer are better back end of the rotation guys. I really hope we get someone better than this.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:16 am
So do I, but it seems like they backed off burnett, everything went dead silent about that.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Phil,
Talks between the Phillies and the A’s about right-hander Joe Blanton are accelerating, reports ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.
Blanton, 27, has struggled this season with a 5-12 record and a 4.96 ERA, but the Phillies could use a pitcher like Blanton who can eat up innings and hopefully give the Phillies quality starts in the second half.
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind as long as we give up Golson or Donald and not CC or Marson. However, I think that Beane will ask for an Outman/Drabek deal.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:22 am
DOnald must also be a stud because he made the olympic team too….
maybe hes ready to come up and do somehting. be a backup or platoon with feliz at third, can he play 3rd?
July 17th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Ill bet beane does ask for drabek because drabek is hurt and he knows drabek will be a good pitcher when hes ready. outman can go im ok with that. relievers are easy to find compared to starters.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Also just heard rumors that the Phils are asking about Matt Cain from San Fran. He’s only 23 and his ERA is right above 4. Probably wouldn’t be cheap but I could get behind a move like this.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:32 am
I don’t know that he has a strong enough arm to play 3rd..
Blanton is definitely an upgrade over what we have… his ERA scares me though, and I don’t think he’s worth top prospects.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Cain has more upside than Blanton.. and they could use Golson and Donald since Randy Winn and Omar Vizquel can’t play by the bay forever. That makes more sense to me
July 17th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Drabek was a #1 pick for us.. and he has the best curveball in the system… even at like 19 years old !!!
Keep him.. its time for the Phillies to try keep their prospects rather then dump them for pitchers with ERAs around 5
They aren’t winning the World Series this year, so take advantage of teams that are selling and make yourself stronger… but don’t go crazy as buyers, either.. they need to be smart and set themselves up for a nice run at the top of the NL East
July 17th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Oh man, I’d take Cain in a heart beat. There’s a solid #3 maybe even #2 guy. Maybe Donald, Golson, and another 2 lesser prospects for Wynn and Cain. I’d be down with that.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Didnt SF issue a hands off warining over cain?
I agree that theres basically no way to win the WS this year unless some miracle happens. lTherefore, I dont want to urinate away some top prospects. If they were 7 games up and made a run at CC or Harden then thats one thing, but they didnt. They failed the interleague test miserably. So I want to develop these young prospects and start bringing them up in the near future.
you do that so you dont have to waste money on the adam eatons and the geoff jenkins of the world.
A big splash in free agnecy for a big starter would be nice but well deal with that when it comes. For now, just give me a cheap innings eater. I cant beleive im saying that but thats how far its gone. and go get someone who can run fast and get on base.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Geoff, I agree that we should ignore the Mets trolls, but your line “they should put Michael Bloomberg in prison for the things he’s done” WHAT?!? New York is cleaner and safer then it’s ever been and the guy doesn’t even take a salary. How could anyone argue with what he’s doing? I don’t know if you’re just saying it to be funny, but I’m seriously confused!?
also, Go Phillies
July 17th, 2008 at 10:47 am
I will not get into that on a baseball blog, itll just piss people off. just google him and read as much as you can. thats what i do anyway when it comes to policitians. i often dont like the stuff that i fin din those searches either.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:51 am
well as someone who lives and work in New York, I can honestly say he’s the best mayor we’ve had in decades. Seriously. The dude gives tens of millions of dollars a year to charity and doesn’t take a salary. The city is much, much better than it was years ago. I’m just saying don’t throw out random lines like that when you don’t really know what you’re talking about.
But I agree, we’ll keep it to baseball and talk about how much the Phillies are going to get fleeced for Blanton.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Yeah Ill go on other blogs and FLIP OUT about political stuff. reddit is a good place to do that. but on here i try to liek keep that out of the equation.
im worried that beane will take gillick to school and somehow get like cardenas and carrasco for him.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:56 am
I’m worried too. I would try to trade Golson now before his stock falls even more. Golson and Donald or something like that.
Did anyone hear the rumor of Sherrill and Daniel Cabrera from the O’s?
July 17th, 2008 at 10:58 am
i didnt hear that one, where did it come from? what do the O’s want?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:03 am
I think an Orioles fan posted on MLBTR that it’s being thrown around in Baltimore. They would ask for Donald, Drabek and an A-ball pitcher that I’m not too familiar with. I think Cabrera is an arbitration guy and I’m not sure what Sherril’s contract is, but he’s like 32, so they should look to get prospects and continue to rebuild.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Hmm. Might not be too bad. Depends on what the whole deal is. Sherrill would be an excellent setup man here. Cabrera would be the same or better than Blanton.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Blanton was just sent somewhere for three minor leaguers
July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
ESPN: blanton to the phillies for adrien cardenas, josh outman, and matthew spencer.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
well, i guess you have toi give up one good prospect to get anything at all now. relievers are easy to find so its ok that outman is in the deal. ive never even heard of matthew spencer, just that hes an outfielder.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Billy Beane strikes again.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Ugh, Hate the deal. Adam Eaton #2.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
no, the stats might not say it, but hes better than adam eaton, trust me. hes ok, but eaton is BBBBBBBAD.
how do they get rido of eaton now? DFA

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about these professional sports ? I am thinking about signing up for this sports handicapping service. It looks pretty promising and its backed by a clickback guarantee which means your going to get your money back if you don’t like the system or it simply doesn’t work. Has anyone tried a system like this?
