Rollins Scratched Because Of Lateness
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, July 24, 2008 03:09 PM
According to 610 WIP, Jimmy Rollins was late for today’s game against the Mets. He was scratched from the starting lineup and Eric Bruntlett took his place. Bruntlett went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
More on the loss later.

He’s really showing he wants to be here.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
late? LATE?!?!?!?!? The NL MVP and team leader is late!!!!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh. damnit damnit damnit. what the f is going on with this team?!!!!!!! im so pissed off at this team right now.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
this team is the mets last year…to many egos…
gillick needs to make a move just to give this lineup a boost because this is straight patheticccccccccccccccccccc
July 24th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
No the Phils sound like the Mets a few weeks ago this is getting out of control
July 24th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
“now” not no
July 24th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
i think charlie has lost control. why has he lost control? because aaron rowand is not there to keep people in order.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
inexcusable, nothing else needs to be said.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
rumor has it, he was drunk
July 24th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
As much as we loved watching the mets collapse last year, let’s face it, they were a better team last year for 95% of the season and they’re stronger this year as oliver perez has gotten much better and they added santana. rollins had a career last year, but he’s not as good historically as he was last year, ryan howard is really quite easy to pitch to, he’s only capable of hitting mistakes and with utley not tearing the cover off the ball, there’s really not a lot of pop in our lineup.
i really hope rollins and utley catch fire simultaneously and that ryan church doesn’t return to the mets …
July 24th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
i think jimmy has become a clubhouse cancer.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I think the clubhouse is lacking role players, too much talent and not enough discipline and Jimmy has to stand up and captain this team.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Deny, deny deny that this ever happened, then trade Rollins, Carrasco, and Marson for Halladay.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
rollins not enough for halladay? toronto needs a SS anyway. if im throwing in carrasco i want an outfielder thrown into this deal…
July 24th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Definitely inexcusable. Of all people, Rollins- who talks so much- doesn’t show up on time to a game where first place is on the line. It’s a joke.
As a fan to sit back and see stuff like that happen- it shows he obviously doesn’t care. I’m at a loss for words…that’s the most ridiculous thing ever.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Jimmy’s wanting a bigger contract.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Everyone tried to act like this wasnt a big deal when he OPENLY said he doesnt care on monday. Well now youre seeing that he was NOT joking. He doesnt care.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
its a joke…this team can only score by the long ball…no body on this team is hitting over .300 wow….trade for holliday or halliday….win now fuck the future
July 24th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
No way Rollins would be enough for Halladay straight up. I was joking about Rollins, Carrasco, and Marson, but it would probably take Rollins plus at least one prospect. Jays don’t need any OF help, so we’d be talking one of: Carrasco, Happ, Savery, Drabek, Marson, etc. (no Donald if Rollins is being traded), and a lower-level guy.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
i’d love to see the face of jimmy if he got traded to toronto haha living in canada crying like a little girl…he’d look back and wonder why he didnt keep his mouth shut
July 24th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
yeah rollins and carrasco or any1 in a second for halliday please god gillick do it
July 24th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
wow… JRoll is late to a game and you guys are ready to trade him.
WTF!?!
July 24th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
we are not ready to trade him just if we could get halladay i think he expendable
July 24th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
because hes been acting liek an arrogant, lazy jackass ALL SEASON. running his mouth and letting other people abck him up. what a punk. hes become jose reyes.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
he is definitely expendable. the way hes playing this year i think id rather take the starting shortstop for the US olympic team, jason donald.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Most dominant pitcher in baseball for this decade(Who is signed through 2010 at a cheap price)>an underachieving short stop who had a career year last year.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
There is no way they trade him. Regardless, my interest in this year’s team just dropped about 70%. They have no passion, they’re the Mets from 07. I guess last year was a tease and they’re back to the form as always, just dissapointing fans
July 24th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
i cant believe im saying this but id much rather have reyes on this team than rollins
July 24th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Tom, Geoff, and Phil – right on. They would be CRAZY not to see if the Jays want Rollins (Toronto does need a SS) now that Halladay is being semi-shopped (the Jays need to be blown away to do it). See if Ricciardi will buy the reigning MVP spin. Throw in a prospect or two and get it f’ing done. Pat Gillick can retire from Philly as a hero, and the Phils will be set up to contend for the WS for the next 3 years.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
well, lets be real Gillick is the worst GM … I cant wait till hes gone he is so cheap its not even funny actually thi franchise is cheap…I can see it now Hamels get robbed of money and then next thing you know hes pissed and he has to get traded…
July 24th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
exactly…hamels and halliday would just be sillyyyyyyyyyy
July 24th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
You mean Halladay Hamels. Hamels is a #2 in that rotation.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
1a 1b
July 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
for sure. screw jimmy rollins. thsi team has no heart. they have no aaron rowand
July 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Gillick actually isn’t a bad GM – he can’t force the owners to spend $$ and has to work with what they give him. Supposedly he convinced them it was worth going after Sabathia.
Anyway, Halladay’s only making $2MM more than Rollins this year and $6MM next year.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Maybe trading Rollins will light a fire under their asses to make them all realize they could be next.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
$6MM more than Rollins next year, that is.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
I think Donald would be better trade bait than Rollins at this point, Toronto isn’t winning this year, Rollins has one year left at 8 mill (I’m guessing). They would have to have Donald, Carasco, Happ or Marson and one more piece. Absolutely no chance.
Tom, I don’t think Gillick is that bad of a GM, he just has nothing to work with because of the owners. They never take chances or throw out any money. He’s always put together winning teams, but at the same time, he refuses to win now with the Phils. He finds pieces of gum to stop a leak without getting a real fix.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
no gillick is a bad gm…do i need to name his moves…jenkins…tom gordan…eaton….helms…feliz..do you need more
July 24th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
YOU ARE NOT GETTING HALLADAY. Keep dreaming
July 24th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
well first of all…if the phillies said no to a holliday fuentes deal hes a bad gm right there…carrasco is a 3rd starter on a team happ is having a good year but a thrwo in….victorino is truly just another fast player who pops up every at bat to nuetralize his speed…
July 24th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Feliz is good… Dobbs, Werth, Moyer, Kendrick, Lidge… guess they are bad Tom?
We had this debate like 2 weeks ago, and his good moves far outweight his bad moves
July 24th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
I just came out of the closet the other day!!!
July 24th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
they dfo the holliday trade they say by to burrells 14 mill … give that to hamels
July 24th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I wanted Carlos Delgado to die two months ago, now I pretend like I have liked him all along.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
kendrick was a farm kid not a trade don….lidge moyer are his moves…
he signs EATON FOR 3 YEARS 25 MILL…nobody would everrrrrrrrrrrr have done that when he was a FA….
blanton trade…cmon he gave up our 2nd and 4th best prospect HAHAHAA
July 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
I’ll agree, he’s lost his luster.
He’s made poor moves, but some nice ones like Don said; but he’s also looking at it small time. Maybe he wont trade pieces because he knows the owners will never pay big money for other people and the Phils need prospects.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
he let go of rowand and lohse do we not count them?…gillick didnt want to give rowand 5 years … his fault now
July 24th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
as i said the phillies franchise is cheap as a whole…id love to see cashman in here and get them idiots like dave montgomery out
July 24th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I agree with not giving him 5 years. He’s going to go downhill in two or three, then for the two years after you’ll be complaining about why they signed him so long.
Same with Lohse. He wasn’t worth the money (He’s good at home this year, not good on the road).
He probably signed Jenkins to take Rowand’s leadership role, but I think that was a piss poor move
July 24th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I know im running on fire bc we are out of first but im sayin if this team is the same after the deadline its a wrap becasue theres no motivation…you make a move for holliday you imediatly change the lineup and give it a boost…
July 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Just curious what Larry Anderson thought about Rollins being late.
I’m just saying….
July 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
HAHA. You guys sit here and act like this is fantasy baseball throwing out ridiculous trades that no one would make. Theres no way Halladay goes for Rollins + prospects. And come on you have your saviors already in Blanton and Myers. What a difference two days makes with you Philly fans
July 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
any phils fan who says they shouldnt trade for holliday is straight stupiddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd….
July 24th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Shake things up get rid of Charlie, he has lost control and this is while they were in first place.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Predict 100 wins for your 89 win team… see every level of your offensive production decrease across the board… get benched for failing to hustle… and get benched again for arriving to the park late for a game.
A Mets game.
Thats leadership!
July 24th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
im not sayin the phils are done im saying they need to make a move…tony your a shithead
July 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I dont actually have a problem with tthe blanton move but that cant be it. thats fine. they gave up cardenas and some junk. so what?
now go get the rest of it done. thats not enough, obviously.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
i wish they would trade rollins burrell worth and hammells for 2 mid-level minor leaguers and a little cash…on our end obviously
does anyone want to me up i am a flaming homo
July 24th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Nobody knew ANYTHING about Kendrick.. and his numbers were terrible in AA… but Gillick brought him up anyway (so how is that not his move?)
Eaton was a bad sign. Helms couldn’t produce in a minor-role but is back to his old self with the Marlins this year… Gordon has been good at times, and terrible at times. Cardenas was a few years away from the majors, and doesn’t project to be anything great.. and Outman would have been called up already if they thought he was the answer as to Lefty help in the bullpen… you gave up Nothing to get a guy who is among the leaders in Innings Pitched over the last few years.
Gillick didn’t want to give Rowand 5 years at $60 million. And didn’t want to give Lohse 4 years at $40 million. Smart if you ask me.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
what planet are you people from….Halladay?
Geez.
Next….
July 24th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
we just got fleeced on the Blanton trade….what teh hell people!!!
July 24th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
It’s been bumpy, but this team will pull it out….there’s enough good energy and with time we may hear a good reason why JRoll was tardy (it’s rare this happens, i’ll wait for his side of the story).
i hate the ownership at a blood-boiling level….
July 24th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
kendrick has one pitch…a sinker and hes getting rocked latly…cardenas was supoposely the best hitter in the minors for the phils what are you talkin about…im not sayin not trade him but to include him in a deal for blanton is questionsable….
July 24th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
there just needs to be a shakeup i guess we will c july 31st
July 24th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Thought Blanton move would be good if we were looking for a third starter, except that we already have about 4 of those (including Happ not Eaton).
I was so mad at that trade because they didn’t go all in for a Cy Young winner but you go 3/5 in for a mediocre guy. Just tells you they really have no desire to win. By the time the guys they saved come up, Howard Rollins Burrell will be gone
July 24th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Let’s give the mets some credit here, they took a wild punch from us, gathered themselves and won two straight.
We just need to come back tomorrow and win, but the locker room question, plus Jimy Williams brilliantly putting in So T to pinch him, has to put Manuel on the hot seat.
And by hot seat I don’t mean the toilet he blows up from drinking 25 tap beers.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
THANK YOU SOAPYYYYYYYY
July 24th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
what? cardenas isnt projected to be a position player at the major league level. the ONLY thing he can do is hit. hes smaller, and his glove isnt the best. hell be a serviceable player.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
they dont have enough prospects to get an elite starter, they sitll dont. but thats where jimmy rollins comes into play….
July 24th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Aaaaaaaay!
July 24th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Tom.. go read up on Cardenas and then tell me how bad a deal it was. And if we got screwed then why did EVERY baseball writer call it a good move for the Phillies?
If you trade for Holliday you … no sh!t… but that ain’t happenin
and you commented that you want to see Cashman in here.. and David Montgomery out… because he’s cheap. The GM has nothing to do with being cheap or not.. thats all the owners.. If you ask me, Cashman does a pretty bad job of putting together that team with the amount of money he is given to shop with.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Although, they don’t make the playoffs, record against the Mets is the first thing I looked at. They dominated them last year. The tables have turned 100%, we don’t look at them as a threat.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
I guess Rollins didn’t learn his lesson when he got sat for not hustling.
Boo you Jimmy!
July 24th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
they had a chance @ holliday and supposely the phils said no…there idiots…it aint like they gotta resign right away they got another year and with fuentes you will get a first round pick for any team that signs him as compensation along with burrell IF WE OFFER ARBIRTRATION which we may do just to get pciks….count thats 3 first round picks right there as a possibility
July 24th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
When is the last time Billy Beane made a trade that doesn’t help his team more? Look at the guys he let go, Haren is the only one who has flourished right away (Hudson took a little to get back to his old form). If Beane wanted them they have to have some type of potential.
Don, you wouldn’t sell the farm to get CC? Right now I would. If Rollins is our SS and supposed leader, he could try to talk CC into staying. If not, oh well we finally gave it a shot.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
outman was our #4 prospect? yeah, okay…
i’m a fan of jimmy but this is terrible news. his reason for being late better be something totally unavoidable. hopefully nothing bad in his family or anything like that. but still, i can’t imagine what else would lead to him being late for a game like this.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Cashman is a clown…probably worst eye for pitching in MLB.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
CC is a free agent at the end of the year.. and already said that he was going to become a Free Agent to test the market.
It would have taken ALL of our top prospects, in our already weak farm system to get him.. and there was no chance that you would sign him to an extension.
So, No I wouldn’t sell the farm to get him, and I’m glad they didn’t …. they have a shot to get him in the off-season if they want to outbid people.. but trading for him would have been a mistake because its clear that he wouldn’t be able to guarantee a championship this year…
July 24th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
baseball america had outman as the 4th best propsect…i don’t go to minor league games so i have to go by what people say that do shithead
July 24th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
If Rollins was late he should pay the price for that. But, if I am the manager and playing for 1st place against the Mets I would wait till Friday to do something.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
@ Soapy re: Rollins’ contract – he’s signed for 2009 at 8.5MM, 2010 at 7.5MM, and has a club option for 2011 at 8.5, with a 2MM buyout.
Not bad for the league MVP (right Mr. Ricciardi?)
July 24th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
It should be said that a noon game is a little earlier than usual, so I would like to hear the specifics on JRoll’s lateness before vilifying him. It’s certainly no excuse though…
July 24th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Its just that Rollins is a big key to that game if you have to win that game.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
If Beltran ran late but was there by the 1st inning he would be in the game.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Now they have at least given themselves a window.. and kept their best prospects. If the NL is as bad as everyone says it is.. then we should still have a chance to make a World Series in the next few years.
We need to add a pitcher as either #1 or #2 to go along with Hamels.. and you have a couple of #3’s… as you all pointed out. So if they are a Ben Sheets away from having a rotation that goes #1a, #1b, #3, #3, #3 … I like their chances.
Depending on what they do with Burrell they may need to add a Righty Power bat to the lineup, but the infield has enough power to go around to cover the lack of CF and C power… I think they have a good team for a few years to come
July 24th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I respect the fact that you dont want to trade for him. But what other option is there to become an elite team? If they trade for him, should make the playoffs, possibly the world series. You have him and Hamels as your main pitchers.
All I’m saying is that I don’t want to wait anymore. They had a shot at a stud (two if you include Holliday) and didn’t do it. This is not a championship team. Next year with the contracts they have and the lack of talent will not be a championship team. There are only so many years left before howard and Rollins are gone
I just want to see some kind of commitment towards a championship, not a “we’re satisfied as long as we’re in it the final two week” mentality

Soapy: 2008 Mets vs. Phillies: Mets 9 wins, Phillies 4 wins.
Who owns who?

Dude, Beane plays moneyball, he invented it. Moneyball is about getting value for your players when theyre here and when theyre traded. Its totally statistics and salary driven. the A owners are the cheapest owners in baseball just about. So when he can see ANY value in return for blanton, who had no value, he took the value even though the only value in the deal was cardenas and even he was questionable.
outman has no value, relief prospects are a dime a dozen. theyre ready faster but theyre also easier to find.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
exactly thats what they do…they are the eagles of the mlb…cheap mother fuckers who are just happy rippin fans off
July 24th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Except this GM, Beane, actually tries to win and does a decent job given the face that he has NOTHING to work with. they unloaded blanton because he makes too much and he doesnt make a whole lot at all!
i HATE the eagles and i was born and raised here. i hope brian wastbrook held out today and i hope he refuses to play for this team.

I just got a fresh NYM symbol shaved into the side of my head to let everyone know that i’m a Mets fan again, now that they won a few games over the past month!! If they choke again though, you won’t hear from me on here at all.

I have a lot of respect for Charlie Manuel and how he doesn’t let stuff like this slide just because he is a star player.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
I could swear as late as mid-April,Most Phillies Phans revered and walked the ground J-Roll walked on,now you throw him under the bus? Most people know that Babe Ruth at times got hammered the night before a game and showed up ready to play.Just as Jose Reyes (love him or hate him) I can think of 29 other teams that would want one/other/or both.Just remember, you don’t know what you got ’til its gone.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Lets go Mets: i thought i said last year the Phils dominated and this year it’s flipped. Guess your money goes to terrible hair decisions and not books.
July 24th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
I’m faster than Jose Reyes yo
July 24th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Soapy, you typical whining Philly fan, you wrote “we don’t look at them as a threat.” Yet you have won 4 of 13 games. Explain that tough guy?
July 24th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
LETS GO METS says- METS won, Phillies lost. Yo.
July 24th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I’m the toughest dude on here. You can’t beat me.
I didn’t even let my young-balls or my chicken-heads see me cry the other night when Phillies won that game. But now that we started winning, I busted out all my most-fly gear and ima let erbody know dat ima mets fan. Unless the Yankees start gettin nasty, then i’ll root for whoever is better

I LIKE TO SNIFF MY BUTT!
July 24th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
first off, guy above me, go fuck yourself, second of all, j-roll, who stole an mvp from matt holliday last year, ahs been a joke so far. he blamed traffic lights for his lateness

Chuckling at some of these posts regarding Rollins. I think it was Geoff who started with his hyper-reactions (as usual) with his fixation on Rollins (if I’m wrong, I apologize). I don’t pay much attention to all the rants where overreactions run rampant. However, in defense of Rollins, may I remind all those who jumped on Geoff’s bandwagon (”Rollins must go”), it was Rollin’s leadership (”we’re the team to beat”) and an MVP year to back it up that help the team make the playoffs. I think there’s a debt of gratitude by the front office, team and fans to give Rollins every possible chance to assert himself as an All Star in the remaining 60 games to lead the team to the playoffs. As Tim reminds us, it’s still JULY.

Looks like Camp Hockey Helmet just got home. Why is it When the Mets beat the Phils, you kids come in here acting like 3rd rate clowns? C’mon, you make the rest of the even keeled realistic Amazins fans look like ass clowns like yourselves.Mets won 2 of 3 and are 9 and 4 vs the Phils this season, yes I am excited, but I and other Mets fans aren’t here pissing on the ashes. This site is the Phillies Phans home, treat it with a little respect and class.
July 24th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Yeah dumbass, the Phils don’t look at them as a threat, that’s why they’re losing. Your retarted
July 24th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I cant even read half of the shit being posted here. A bunch of overreaction to a cold streak. We’re underachieving right now, sooner or later we’ll pick it back up. Patience is a virtue.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Yes, but patience is not something we Phillies or the Mets fans possess. On that I think we can all agree.
I still think a shakeup is in order. We definitely need another lefty reliever and possibly a bat. I say go all out and make a big trade. If we have to clean out the farm for Holliday or Halliday (and I hear the Jays are shopping him to see what they can get), then I say we do it. There is no window. The time is now.
July 25th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Actually Soapy, it is “you’re retarded.” Not “your.” You should brush up on your grammar skills before calling people “retarded.”
July 26th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
It’s amazing how much trade Rollins chatter followed his benching. Even though it’s pretty much nonsense, the idea of trading him to the Jays for Halladay is pretty intriguing.
