Trade Talk: Scouting Bedard, Sabathia; Victorino

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, July 03, 2008 03:36 PM

has been reported numerous times that the Phillies have scouted CC Sabathia and Erik Bedard. Of course they have — they’re looking at them both. Nothing new on Carlos Carrasco, though one thinks if he’s injured for a long period of time it wouldn’t bode well for trading prospects.

And speaking of those …

Jayson Stark has the dirt on two Phillies that probably won’t be going anywhere soon. He writes:

“Despite persistent rumors that the Phillies would trade Shane Victorino for a starting pitcher, an official of one club says: ‘I don’t know where that’s coming from.’ He said the Phillies have ‘never given the indication they’re actively looking to do something with him.’

“Incidentally, other clubs are reporting the Phillies also won’t talk about their Double-A catcher, Lou Marson (currently hitting .322, with a .444 on-base percentage that ranks second in the Eastern League). They’re now projecting Marson as their starting catcher in the very near future.”

Good and good. Losing Victorino is not recommended. He provides a balance this team needs with its propensity for hitting the long ball and clogging bases. And it’s great to see Marson is projected as the catcher of the future. He sure as heck is, and could be such next season.

They should throw the Natties some garbage for Tim Redding. At least that would a couple of Ws against the Phils he couldnt get.

  2. Phil Says:

Looks like Werth is gone then, but I’d rather trade Vic than Werth. I’d prefer to keep both of them. Werth should be the everyday right fielder and we should try to ship off Jenkins somehow some way or make him an overpaid bench player.

  3. Don M Says:

We need to get ready for the possibility that they trade Carrasco, Donald, and Cardanes… its going to take at least that if they want to go after Sabathia or Bedard.

They have also been scouting Randy Wolf…

Bedard would be nice because he at least is signef for a few years I think… C.C. would just be a rental.

  4. PhillyFriar Says:

Good news on both fronts. Marson should be the lone “untouchable” in the minors as far as I’m concerned, and I’d be loathe to lose Victorino, who’s an integral part of this team.

I’ll repeat myself though: I’d much rather trade for Bedard than a rental, even one as good as Sabathia.

  5. Geoff Says:

Yeah Marson damn well is the catcher of the future, like next year. i dont want to lose carrasco either. i think hes sure thing to make yout rotation next year and be decent. i know hes been shady recently but his stuff is too good.

  6. Geoff Says:

i dotn even want bedard or sabathia anymore anyway. f those guys

  7. Geoff Says:

we are out of the running for burnett. toronto wants, allegedly, an mlb-ready shortstop. is donald that close?

  8. Don M Says:

Yea but if his stuff has been shaky at AA.. that means he’d be getting “Kim Myers-ed” aka Knocked-around… at the big league level

What, Too soon for a joke like that??

I would gladly take Bedard on my team.. for Carrasco… but I think Golson, Marson, and Cardanas have a chance to be really good in the not too distant future..

  9. Phil Says:

I’ll give them Donald for Burnett in a second. How about Rollins for Halladay?

  10. Don M Says:

Donald is an all-star at the AA level, and I think he’s probably about ready to play everyday.

But with Rollins here for another few years, it makes sense to trade him.

I don’t think Burnett is that good, but if he doesn’t cost you much, he would obviously be a big help to this team… The key is to leave that window open as long as you can, and try to bring home that championship

  11. Geoff Says:

Yeah. but Savery, Marson, Golson, and Carrasco shouldnt be sold off in order to do that. If youre a legitimate GM, you have to put your foot down at some point and say, no, hands off these prospects. if we dont get a starter because of that, then oh well, they should have done a better job making kyle lohse stay here and thats their responsibility. but dont urinate away your future to cover for their own past failures.

i dont even think bedard is worth that. his value is at an all time low. so you say, ok well give you jason donald and another lesser propect and you tell them to F off if they ask for more than that.

  12. Phil Says:

Bedard is worth Cardenas, Donald, and a lesser prospect IMO.

  13. Geoff Says:

Yes indeed he is. But noone touches my top two-three pitching prospects if im the GM

  14. Don M Says:

If you offer “Jason Donald and another lesser prospect” … you don’t get him, and you don’t make your team any stronger.

Savery looks to be a long way away from the Majors.. Golson K’s as much as Howard… Carrasco is really doing anything overly exciting either.. There is no guarantee that any of them will succeed at the highest level, but you already know how good Bedard can be.

It all depends on how well we can evaluate our own talent.. Myers and Madson, and whoever else haven’t worked out so great. Hamels is the first home-grown all-star pitcher in like 15 years

  15. Don M Says:

Top Hitters: Cards, Golson, Marson, Donald
    Pitchers: Carrasco, Bastardo, Happ, Savery

its going to take at least 3 of those guys to get you a top-tier starting pitcher.

A LOT of this depends on their plans for Burrell, if you are going to let him walk, you need to keep Golson.. if they don’t want to sign Howard long-term (which I dont think they should) they need to keep Cardanas…

Bastardo was a quick-riser this year, maybe teams will be high on him ??

  16. Don M Says:

They also have some YOUNG guys that we have no idea about..

Dominic Brown, Quintin Berry, Darby Myers,

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/features/265168.html

What happened to Josh Outman’s status as a top prospect, we never hear his name in rumors… Baseball Prospectus doesn’t have Greg Golson listed in their projected lineup for 2011.

  17. Geoff Says:

I still believe in cultivating your own people. they want too much for a douchebag pitcher whos playing injured and cant get past 100 pitches then tell them to go climb a tree. dont let them off the hook for their mistake.

noone is going to get carlos silva and let them off the hook for that. some team will get bedard but i dont think it should be us. We need a right-hander anyway.

  18. Geoff Says:

Im planning on baniushing jenkins to the abyss after this season. so golson will replace him and someone else will replace taguchi, who should have been released yesterday

  19. danny Says:

I really want to get Bedard- what’s with this stuff about him not ever wanting to go 100 pitches? Anyone have a link about that?

Lots of guys act like D-bags on losing teams. It’s the way it goes.

I agree with Phil, but I would also trade Werth and a top prospect if that’s what it takes.

Can you imagine playing the Cardinals in round 1 in October with Hamels going in game 1 and Bedard going in game 2?

  20. danny Says:

Bedard has thrown 1274 pitches in 76.0 innings.
In 14 games, he has thrown over 90 pitches 10 times. (71%)

Plus he has a 3.79 ERA!

And he had 221 Ks last year!

And he’s about to enter his prime at 29.

  21. danny Says:

Geoff, why do you hate Bedard so deeply? Have you ever played on a team with a .393 winning percentage? I have– everyone is miserable.

  22. TJ Says:

Give me Bedard no matter the cost (not literally), but he is signed through next year and we could trade him in his contract year if need be and chances are that his stock only goes up from here on.

  23. danny Says:

I agree TJ. Buster Olney wrote that Bedard has shown himself to not be an ace this year. But remember, Buster Olney is retarded and sounds like my sister.
