Update: Happ Added To Roster

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, July 29, 2008 11:50 AM

UPDATE (1:17 p.m.): And not long after I post this, David Murphy reports the Phillies have added Happ to the roster. But be warned: Things may change if Ron Mahay is inked.

***

Just to update everyone, JA Happ has not been recalled to Philadelphia yet. In fact, yesterday on Daily News Live Asst. GM Ruben Amaro said Happ has not been informed of anything.

It’s likely the Phillies would make a roster move within the next few hours, so be ready for something.

uh oh. i dotn like the sound of that…..too onimous.

  2. Phil Says:

Does anyone else feel that we’re dealing with the calm before the storm right now? Something tells me Happ is leaving Philly.

  3. Phil Says:

haha…exactly what I was thinking Geoff.

  4. Geoff Says:

Well if hes leaving theyd better be getting something damn good. DAMN good, thats under contract for AT LEAST one more season. thats SO shady. ruben amaro is such a piece of shit. i dont trust him at all..

  5. MA Phanatic Says:

uhhhhh this can’t be good. I’m surprised though, I’ve read accounts that Happ was pulled out of his start and received congratulations and high fives in the dugout. Would teamates really high five you if you were just traded? I’m stumped right now….

  6. Don M Says:

I think if you get traded and get to play everyday at the big league level instead of AAA it probably doesn’t matter which team you would be playing for.. you would just be excited.

Geoff… don’t sugar-coat it, tell us how you really feel about Amaro..

  7. Wilson Says:

Todd Zolecki wrote this here: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20080729_Gillick_shopping_and_hoping.html

“We pulled him as a precaution,” assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle said. “We really don’t know what’s going to happen at the trade deadline, and we didn’t know if we were going to need him in the big leagues or weren’t or whatever. We just wanted to keep all our options open, and we thought the best way to do that was limit his outing just so that he might be ready in case we needed him or there was a trade. A lot of different things could happen over the next couple days.”

Take it with a grain of salt

  8. philsphan Says:

  9. Don M Says:

Big Rubes was on DNL yesterday and said that around this time of year when teams are making moves.. its not uncommon for SP to throw less, and blah, blah, blah… I don’t really think they trade him, but I wonder if Happ + a player to be named is enough to get you a Lefty-Reliever ??

I don’t see them making a mega-deal but I do see them adding a piece that they see as an upgrade.. some middle, or situational releiver…

    any word on Tom Gordon??

  10. Geoff Says:

happ is too much for a lefty reliever in my opinion. i wouldnt trade happ for george sherrill or john grabow. ib my opinion the asking price for some of these guys on the market is OUTRAGEOUS.

lou marson for brian fuentes? AHHAAHAHAHA, fuck you colorado.

  11. Wilson Says:

    great minds think alike philsphan

  12. Nick Says:

I live in Richmond and saw Happ throw darts during his short start forthe Pigs last Sunday.

This rotation needs a strong lefty arm more than Manny needs a muzzle.

  13. MA Phanatic Says:

This is from Rob Neyer’s LIVE chat on ESPN right now…

Zach Philly: What is going on with J.A. Happ? Are the phillies working out a trade?

SportsNation Rob Neyer: (12:17 PM ET ) The consensus opinion seems to be that he’ll join the Phillies’ bullpen tonight. But I haven’t read anything about him since yesterday morning.

Not much to report I suppose, but I feel like a trade with Happ would have some ESPN media men on the scene….so maybe it’s a call-up?

  14. Phil Says:

He would have been called up by now…

  15. Matt Says:

Ugh, this sounds like a horrible rumor

    http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=mlb_trade_deadline&month=7&year=2008

  16. Geoff Says:

I dont like this AT ALL. this doesnt add up. i think they had a trade for btrett myers worked out, which then caused them to pull happ to replace myers, but the trade fell through somehow.

you know what kind of trade that is don m? tahts a secret trade

  17. Bruce Says:

    Latest team report:

“GM Pat Gillick reiterated that he’s still hopeful of acquiring a lefty reliever to “give Romero some breathing room.” And there’s also a possibility something might happen after Thursday. If the Phillies are unable to work a deal for Colorado’s Brian Fuentes, Kansas City’s Ron Mahay, Pittsburgh’s John Grabow, Baltimore’s George Sherrill or another reliever before Thursday, there’s a chance that several pitchers will clear waivers and be available via trade in August. In 2006, the Phillies made two trades after July 31, acquiring LHP Jamie Moyer on Aug. 19 and OF Jeff Conine on Aug. 27. “Hopefully we can do that,” Gillick said of finding another lefty. “All I can say is we’re talking, and as long as we continue to talk, there’s always a possibility something will transpire.”

Obviously, Gillick is confirming that their no.1 priority is finding bullpen help, particularly a situational lefty for relief.

  18. Rob Says:

    Phillies got Mahay!

  19. Don M Says:

That would be a good trade… us giving up a SS from Reading… for a solid reliever lets get it done!

  20. Matt Says:

Donald is going to be a stud. This is a terrible move.

  21. Geoff Says:

oh my god, thats ugly. ron mahay for jason donald? thats HORRIBLE. pat gillick should be arrested if he makes that trade. hes having a good year and his numbers look allright, but the last thing we need here is ANOTHER 37 year old relief pitcher. im sorry but i cant approve that. thats garbage.

  22. Don M Says:

What was the possible deal they had to trade Brett Myers, that was never once reported anywhere??

  23. MA Phanatic Says:

I’m surprised they can’t get more for Donald, but you know what, Mahay has been real solid this year….maybe he’s what we need for a stretch run. He’ll certainly cost less than Sherrill and Fuentes. I’m surprised the Royals want Donald so bad, since they have Mike Moustakas, one of their top prospects, who’s a SS at Class A right now…

  24. Wilson Says:

It’s a win now mentality move. Mahay may be 37 but he’s having a solid year, and Donald isn’t going to help this team any time in the near future.

  25. Geoff Says:

dude, you can find 37 year old relief pitchers ANYWHERE. they are a dime a sdozen. thats garbage.

  26. Don M Says:

When was Jason Donald going to suit-up for the Phillies, 2013 ??

  27. Geoff Says:

i dont know don m…thats why it was a secret trade

  28. Matt Says:

I think you guys are missing the point on Donald, sure Jimmy’s blocking SS, but he’s slated to play 3B in the bigs. He’s got a good bat and could have been a .290 / 25 hr guy in the majors. I’ve seen him a lot at Reading and the guy is a gamer, a poor mans Chase Utley.

  29. Geoff Says:

no he was going to suit up for the phillies next week after they pull him from the olypmic team because the phillies SECRETLY traded jimmy rollins for a PILE OF GARBAGE

  30. Geoff Says:

if donald has a strong arm he couldve played third base for us.

  31. philsphan Says:

At Phillies.com JA Happ is currently listed as being on the 25 man roster. Adam Eaton is off the 25 man roster, so this must be current. It appears that Happ is taking Eaton’s roster spot after all, despite Amaro’s comments that suggested Happ was involved in a trade. Maybe there is a trade, but Happ isn’t the one being traded? It should be interesting to see how this all plays out.

  32. Geoff Says:

i really hope that rumor does not come true. BAD. thats highway robbery.

do 37 year old relievers really have that kind of value? thats INSANE. those are guys you pick up off the scrap pile. if they trade an OLYMPIC, mlb-ready shortstop for some old SCRAP PILE GARBAGE i will be SO pissed.

  33. Don M Says:

If Donald was ever going to play 3b for us…. then why wasn’t he playing it down at Reading??

I LOVE THE TRADE DEADLINE AND THE HOT STOVE OF BASEBALL !!!!!

  34. Wilson Says:

Even if Donald plays 3B, it won’t be for another couple of years in the bigs. He’s a gamer I agree, but he’s not ready. I’m not saying that I like giving him up, but if you are looking to win this year, Jason Donald is not going to help you

  35. Geoff Says:

OI also love mlb trades, theyre better than ANY other trades in pro sports. second is the nHL trade deadline, because sometimes they go the mlb-way and do prospects only and sometimes they make blockbusters.

but this is such a great time of year.

  36. TJ Says:

Rip off. Gillick sucks if this happens.

  37. Geoff Says:

i dont like the face that the phillies have littered their bullpen with a bunch of 35+ year olds. not good.

seanez, gordon (was once VERY great), they even tried to sneak steve klin ein there but he was too crappy, and now this guy

  38. Don M Says:

If 37 year old Lefty Relievers with LOW ERAs are so easy to get… why does EVERY MLB team have such a hard time trying to find one and trade for one every season??

Donald’s 17 errors really scream MLB-READY to most teams… they all covet that type of production at Short-Stop… who needs gold glove winner Jimmy Rollins, when we could have Jason Donald instead..

  39. philsphan Says:

I would like to have Mahay (he would not be a rental either0 but don’t want to give up Donald for him. Maybe Myers, Golson, and mid level prsopect for Mahay?

  40. Brian Says:

WIP Just said that J.A.(pronounced Jay) Happ has been officially called-up

  41. Wilson Says:

    Haha Steve Kline

  42. philsphan Says:

Don: Donald won’t play SS in the majors. Probably 2B or 3B, possibly outfield.

  43. Wilson Says:

    philsphan, are you serious?

  44. TJ Says:

philsphan – that wont happen. There’s already a trade set up for Mahay, why are you negoiatating with yourself?

  45. Geoff Says:

im sorry, but i cant get excited about trading for 37 year old bullpen slop. ont care about his ERA, hes 37 years old and he will wear down in like two weeks.

look at seanez, he lasted like part of the season and then he collapsed.

  46. Phil Says:

We should be trying to get more than just Mahay off of the Royals. Give them Bastrado, Rollins, and Werth for DeJesus, Greinke, and Mahay.

  47. Geoff Says:

whats wrong with john grabow? id like that much better, hes off the DL now, hes 29/30 yrs old, much safer get than some old man.

  48. Matt Says:

Donald is a nice canidate to replace Feliz in 2010. He’s already done for the year at Reading, and will play for Allentown next year.

  49. Phil Says:

Geoff, Mahay has had a pretty good career aside from a bad one here and there. The guy will fit right into our bullpen.

  50. Geoff Says:

thats a good idea phil. dont need to put werth in there though. dejesus, mahay, grienke for rollins, bartardo should be more than enough.

  51. Don M Says:

I think you guys are missing the point… Donald wasn’t going to play for the Phillies anytime in the near future.. and you made your team stronger this year and I think he’s signed for next year too… when Gordon is gone and you need solid arms in the pen.

Seanez is just a mop-up guy… which every team has.. why even mention him?

Nobody is saying this is an exciting trade, but it makes the Phillies stronger for the next two years, and they gave up a guy that wasn’t going to play here in that time-frame

He’s not better than Feliz, so Donald wouldn’t be up to play 3b anyway… and he’s not better than Rollins or Utley, so he has nowhere to play on our team

  52. Geoff Says:

well, i just sincerely hope that my concerns are not realized and that this turns out to be a good thing. this guy better be lights out. i assume theyll try and use him as the setup man? instead of gordon

  53. Phil Says:

Geoff, Mahay will be lights out. Look at that ERA…he has that ERA in the AL. He’ll mow down the NL.

  54. CZ Says:

Assuming this goes down, do they send Happ back down or go with 3 lefties in the bullpen? I know we all want Happ starting but it appears that won’t be the case until Myers implodes a few more times. This could give Manuel a lot more to work with match-up wise. Donald is a biog price to pay. Is this enough for him?

  55. goforitall Says:

Hey, at least they’re trying to think up there. Mahay has been solid this year with an under 2.00 ERA. I am unbelievably thankful that that piece of shit Eaton is gone

  56. Don M Says:

This is another case of everyone bashing a guy in hopes that he sucks for the Phillies, and then they can tell everyone how they knew it would be a terrible trade..

they added a piece they needed, for a guy that wasn’t coming up anytime soon. Boom.

  57. Geoff Says:

I think the “secret trade” involving brett myers is going to go down soon. that will put happ in the rotation. mahay to the setup role.

  58. goforitall Says:

I agree, Donald was blocked on this team for a couple of years, at least. Mahay can gelp them for this year and next year

  59. goforitall Says:

Geoff, who would want Meyers. He is paid too much and he sucks. YOu’re dreaming.

  60. Geoff Says:

Don..i inherently dont trust gillick. im not that kind of fan, or at elast i try not to be, i hope this guy works out.

i guess thats the price of a setupman these days. so be it, im over it. im not going to keep harping everytime mahay throws a ball and say see i told you so. it just better work thats all.

i guess we cant complain too much about what they give up if the fans demand them to go all out and win now?

  61. CZ Says:

    From David Murphey’s High Cheese:

‘As expected, the Phillies have added lefthander J.A. Happ to the big-league roster. He takes the place of Adam Eaton, who was sent to the minors yesterday.

Happ is 7-6 with a 3.30 ERA for the Triple A Lehigh Valely IronPigs this season, allowing just 97 hits in 117 1/3 innings while striking out 127.

He has made just three relief appearances in his professional career, but is expected to pitch out of the bullpen, at least at the outset. After that it depends to some extent on how well Brett Myers, who is 3-9 going into tonight’s start against the Nationals, and Joe Blanton pitch. If either falters, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Happ move into the rotation.’

  62. Don M Says:

Has there EVER been a trade that not one trade-rumor site ever mentioned before it happened??

If the Phillies were “secretly” shopping Myers it would still be all over the internet, and the Phillies would just deny it…. nothing stays “secret” especially not this time of the year

  63. Geoff Says:

actually i didnt hear anything about the mahay trade on the internet until today. seth everett broke the rumors yesterday morning though.

  64. philsphan Says:

I want Mahay, but I don’t want to give up Donald to get him. Donald, Marson, and Carrasco and the only prospects this team has left that will actually be able to help in 09. I would include Happ he is basically on the team now.

  65. Geoff Says:

don..of course theyre going to deny it, thats why its secret!!

  66. philsphan Says:

I want Mahay, but I don’t want to give up Donald to get him. Donald, Marson, and Carrasco and the only prospects this team has left that will actually be able to help in 09. I would include Happ he is basically on the team now. Don’t get me wrong, I thin, Mahay would be a good set up guy, but along with the Blanton trade this farm system is more barren than ever.

  67. Geoff Says:

can someone bring up donalds numbers? i need to study that further.

  68. Geoff Says:

i looked at mahay, his career numbers didnt impress me until this year, when hes having an awesome year, i will admit.

  69. Don M Says:

This is a move that gives them a better chance to win now… and doesn’t impact thier immediate future (Carrasco, Marson) either.

If Donald had such great trade value, and he was obviously blocked, don’t you think we would have heard more teams interested in him?

AND…. Did this trade actually go down? I still haven’t seen it anywhere…

    Geoff…
Honestly, what makes you not trust Gillick.. his lack of a World Series in his 2 years here?? We’ve improved each of the two seasons he’s been around.. he’s made both good moves and bad… but again, we’ve improved in each of his seasons..

  70. philsphan Says:

“dejesus, mahay, grienke for rollins, bartardo should be more than enough”

Keep on dreaming Geoff…And TJ and Wilson thought my proposal was crazy?!

  71. Phil Says:

    http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/D/jason-donald.shtml

There you go Geoff. Definitely going to be a stud.

  72. Geoff Says:

hes made some really bad moves that appeared good at the time. freddy garcia…because of that i will never trust him until i see it play out of the field.

exception: lidge, i knew lidge was ann automatic steal when they go thim. but that was obvious.

  73. Geoff Says:

you can throw in rowand too because it was his first move and i was giving him the benefit of the doubt.

    thanks phil..looking

  74. Don M Says:

Geoff when this “secret” trade for Myers goes down… I will officially nominate you as PRESIDENT of PHILLIES NATION..

But nobody is allowed to hear anything, anwhere about the trade before it happens, or it wont count

  75. Geoff Says:

yeah hell be a very solid major league player. cut down on errors, thats the only major thing i saw there.

  76. Geoff Says:

exactly. if there is even a sniff, the jig is up and it becomes anormal trade.

  77. Geoff Says:

tghey already brought it up and it was shot down so fast that it made me think they were lying and it was true.

  78. Don M Says:

He also made some REALLY good moves that appeared to be nothing at the time.. Dobbs, Werth, Moyer, Romero ….

You seriously just have some deep-down reason for hating Gillick that you aren’t sharing with us… like he snubbed you for an autograph or something.. cause otherwise, you can clearly see that he is a good GM who makes every team better, everywhere he’s gone in his career.. INCLUDING THE PHILLIES

  79. Wilson Says:

I got you philsphan….that proposal is crazy too. Maybe I could get the call to play shortstop then. I have a 1.000 fielding percentage in my slow pitch league

  80. philsphan Says:

I think that Donald good be a good ML hitter, but he I don’t think he will be a right handed Chase Utley. He could be a good ML starter though. I wouldn’t mind giving up Donald as much if we still had Cardenas, but now it appears that we won’t have either. Ont he other hand, Mahay would help make this the best bullpen in the NL, he would be out set-up man and get can lefties and righties out. If this Mahay deal is real I like it better than the Blanton deal. The Phillies should have never traded for Blanton and just brought up Happ instead. But who knows, maybe Blanton will prove me wrong.

  81. Groty Says:

    Update!

Happ is officially on the roster!

    This just in… SECRET

  83. quality reviews Says:

I really liked the way they came off

  84. Slow Pitch Bats Says:

Changes in roster are always risky. You never know exactly what you are getting. And then you have waisted a trade.
