8! Phillies Bash Maddux, Cruise To Win
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, August 23, 2008 09:26 AM
Yes, eight. The Phillies scored eight runs, the most they’ve scored in August, thrashing the Dodgers 8-1 Friday night. Home runs did the trick — Ryan Howard smashed an opposite-field shot, Chris Coste pounded a three-run drive, and Chase Utley swatted one into the center field shrubbery.
The Phils got six of their eight runs on home runs — still not promising for an offense that needs to produce runs every which way, but to their credit, they did that a little. Coste singled home a run in the fifth, and Jayson Werth had a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Werth came in for Geoff Jenkins, who suffered either a right hip flexor or high quad strain while sliding into second base in the third inning. He’ll have an MRI today.
In all the Phils left just seven men on base; when you score more runs than LOBs you did a nice job converting.
The onslaught backed Kyle Kendrick, who grabbed a win with a soldier’s 5.2 innings. He pitched well, giving up just one run on three hits and two walks, but the Dodgers made him throw. He threw 99 pitches to the patient but unproductive Dodgers. Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson (getting a needed call after his poor effort Thursday) and Scott Eyre closed it out without a dent.
The win kept the Phils 2.5 games in back of the Mets, who won again.

We attended last night’s 70’s retro night. All three homers went to section 143. Random thoughts: my buddy says we are driving jroll out of town, like Lindros, Barkley, etc.
Is retro night a pre-packaged deal throughout MLB, including certain songs for certain situations, or was this a philly production? The Phanatic in his disco red suit at end of 5th inning dancing with third base ump was priceless. Phanatic is sometimes worth price of admission.
Best sign of the night: IMPEACH NIXON. Did it make the CW broadcast?
Biggest gripe: parking cost $11. That stupid price slows down the attendants who are making change for $20 bills. Maybe they can put in EZ Pass or have an exact change lane.
seriously, turning into the Broad Street entrance at 6:30 and we don’t get to parking spot until 7:04 is very poor service by the attendants.

oh and for this middle aged guy, it was nice to see the old Hot Pants Patrol and the video tribute between innings for Bowa was warmly received. In fact, Burrell blew off throwing warm ups with Vic to turn and watch Bowa highlights on the big screen.

Yet another reason why Burrell’s a class act. He didn’t get along with Bowa, but he understands what Bowa brought to the city and the organization, and he was willing to pause and watch. A Manny-type either wouldn’t have noticed the tribute, would have given it the finger, or would have intentionally ignored it. Too bad they won’t be bringing Pat back after the season.

I haven’t been able to get to CBP since it opened, and I love to hear the little things that happened at the game that you don’t get to see on TV. We live just south of Harrisburg and I would love to take my 86 year old dad to a game, but am concerned for him as far as walking, climbing steps, etc. He refuses to use a wheelchair, so no Phillies game for us in person, as yet.
harrisburg bill, could you tell what Charlie was doing/saying to Jimmy after Ryan hit the HR? Looked like he had his hands on Jimmy’s shoulders and was telling him something???

I just checked the Ruben Amaro GM poll and here are 169 votes saying “Yes” for Ruben being our next GM.
Dear Ruben’s kids: Listen up you little rich kids, get off the website, stop voting for your loser/should-have-been-a-painter/LAPDOG dad and see if you can’t figure out how to cover your books without the help of the maids.

To harrisburgbill~ If “Phanatic is sometimes worth price of admission”…what does that say for the Phillies as a team? (chuckle)

Do the Mets ever lose?
August 23rd, 2008 at 11:31 am
Adios J-Hole!
No the Mets don’t lose anymore.
Why is there so much Amaro hate?

Asphincter, not when they play St. Mary’s School of the Blind (i.e. Braves, Pirates, Nationals, Astros, etc.). However, after we get through this next part of our schedule, which will be the hardest part of what we have remaining, the Mets schedule also gets hard. We end the season with 6 against the “Schools of the Blind Braves”, three against the Nationals (who we also play for 3 ealrier in the month), and then we have 6 against the Fish, 3 against the Mets, and 4 against the Brewers. Our schedule is fairly favorable.
The Mets finish this month with 3 against Florida after 2 against us. Then, in September, they have 3 against Milwaukee, 3 against us, 6 against Washington, 6 against Atlanta, but their final week is 4 against the Cubs and 3 against the Marlins. That would be the time to either distance ourselves from them (if we’re in the lead), or make up some ground. Mets vs. Cubs and Fish, Phils vs Braves and Nationals. Advantage Phils.

I’m scared of the Mets… STAY AWAY! I hope all the games get rained out. They’re 9-4 against us, which should be 10-3… they’re pretty mean to us.
August 23rd, 2008 at 11:38 am
Umm…danny, even if the games get rained out, they still have to play them before the playoffs start. All teams play 162 games irregardless of their records or the weather. I do understand your point, but if we get our offense clicking, I’m not worried about them. Their bullpen is shit, and they’ll be without Wagner for most (if not all) of the stretch run. Even if he comes back in the last week or two of the season, during their hardest part, how “good” will he be with a month or two off? I think he’d be a little rusty, to say the least.

Lewisauce…..I found this about Burrell & Howard on mlbtraderumors.com: “With Ryan Howard looking at maybe a $14MM salary in his second year of arbitration, the Phillies could shop him this winter. Rosenthal lays out a scenario where they trade Howard and use some of those young players to acquire Matt Holliday. In this scenario Pat Burrell could be re-signed to play first base. I was surprised to see that a club official sees the chances of retaining Burrell as better than 50-50.”
Maybe Burrell isn’t leaving after all.

Jamie: Teams do not always make up games if they do not matter. Two years ago STL and SF didn’t make-up a game from the middel of the season because in the end it didn’t matter for either of them.
August 23rd, 2008 at 1:16 pm
The Phils are not a team capable of winning the WS. All talk about rainouts or makeups or remaining schedule is for naught. It’s already time to think about next year.

Georgie, you should think about splurging and getting tickets for the HOF club one day. Dad can sit inside in the AC if he’s uncomfortable in the seat. There’s also a handicapped section in the HOF club where he can sit in a cushioned fold out seat so he doesn’t have to walk up and down the steps to the seats. I used to work there and we would do anything we could to accommodate fans of all ages.

I hope we keep Pat.
August 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Keep Pat, Get Holliday and Sign a Frontline Starter
C: Marson 1b: The Bat 2b: Utley ss: Rollins (or donald if rollins gets his wish and gets out of philly) 3b: feliz lf: holliday cf: shane rf: werth
P: cole, insert frontline starter here, moyer, blanton, kendrick, happ, carrasco, Myers (if he doesn’t get traded), lidge durbin, romero
Bench: dobbs from the left, coste from the right
LEGIT!!

I like that.

because your defense isn’t bad enough
August 23rd, 2008 at 4:49 pm
6 – 8 runs per game is the kind of production the Phils need to win the division. Let’s keep it up.
August 24th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
bski, I saw that on Rosenthal this morning. I hope it’s true that there’s a better than 50 percent chance they keep Burrell. However, I have NO CONFIDENCE whatsoever in this front office in any capacity. If C.C. Sabathia were to come knocking in the off-season and say: “You know, I want to play in Philly. How about you give me a three-year deal for $3 million a year?” I’m fairly certain the Phils’ brass would find a way to fuck it up.
I’d love to see Howard get moved for top-of-the-line pitching or a three-way deal to get Holliday. I know K-How’s putting up the numbers again, but as Tim has pointed out, how many of his 30+ HRs and 100+ RBI came in clutch situations? How many were simply forgettable? Will he actually get $14 mil in arbitration with that pathetic-ass BA and insane strikeout ratio? (If so, forget “K-How;” we’ll have to nickname him “The Thief.”)
