Cheer On The Phils Tuesday Night

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, August 16, 2008 01:44 PM

A quick link on this Saturday.

My friends over at We Should Be GM’s have a novel idea for when the Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park Tuesday night:

They want you to cheer. They’re calling it “Campaign Cheer.” From their site:

WSBGM’s would like to establish Campaign Cheer to be unleashed upon Citizens Bank Park Tuesday August 19th at 7:05 pm. What we propose is a blind positivity so strong that it reverberates throughout the stadium from the time the Phillies take the field for the first pitch, until the last player walks off into the clubhouse. Everything must be cheered. A base hit- hooray! A stolen base- clap, clap, clap. A homerun- Go Phils! An error by the 1st basemen- yeah! A pop-up on the 1st pitch of the at bat by our shortstop- alright! An inning ending double play with the bases loaded and no runs scored- la de frickin’ da! Jimmy Rollins doesn’t like boos, he wants to feel like we’re rooting for him, so let’s cheer our asses off for everything the Phils do, good or bad. No boos allowed, no silence allowed, only throat-scratching belly-deep cheers and applause. Ryan Howard will be stunned when he slinks back to the dugout after a strikeout while in the midst of encouraging “get ‘em next time”. Carlos Ruiz will scratch his head when he hears “way to make contact” after he grounds out to the secondbaseman killing a rally. Ryan Madson will nervously smile as the fans chant “Mad Dog” while he allows inherited base runners to score. Jimmy Rollins will shed a tear of satisfaction when he ends the game 0-5, but still gets the fans’ appreciation with “MVP” being repeated over and over again, louder each time he comes to the plate.

I’m dead serious about this Campaign Cheer. The boos obviously aren’t working, so why not go a different route. Rollins wants fan support, well let’s give him some support and then some. Win, lose, or suck we’ll be behind you every second of every game. Stop and think about how funny it would be to see Jimmy fly out to the centerfielder and get a standing ovation as he trots back to the dugout. I’m telling you, this could really work. Pass the idea along to everyone you know, and maybe, just maybe, Philly will actually be the City of Brotherly Love for just one night.

I love it. Tell your friends. Tell everyone. If you’re going to Tuesday night’s game against the Nationals, get off your butt and cheer on your Phils. No matter what. Clap, root, yell “yeah!”, whatever. Just cheer them on. Who knows — it could mean good things.

  1. Phil Says:

    I actually think it’s a good idea.

  2. Fran Says:

    I’ll be there doing it

  3. boo bird Says:

    BOOOO

  4. Chris C Says:

Love it. Maybe the confusion will wake them up. In all seriousness, something needs to give. As my late grandfather would say, they need a match lit under their freakin’ asses. If they are not going to run away with it, maybe moving down to second place will be that wake up call… that or they are screwed and we can talk all winter about letting Roward go west.

  5. Greg B Says:

JRoll needs to sack up, put up, and shut up. Its such a pity that hes such a bitch.

  6. Brian Michael Says:

on the contrary…i think we should show JRoll what real boo-brids are like. he has yet to experience the full wrath of phillies fans and he’s already complaining. like the comment on the last post said, Jimmy is not one of the few professionals we have on this team.

  7. Greg V. Says:

I’m sorry, I’m booing Rollins when I go Wednesday. I’ll cheer for everyone else though!

  8. Greg B Says:

Awesome. Another rookie pitcher tonight. So that means were due for another 1-run, 6 hit performance.

  9. Gene Says:

I think we should do what Greg V says and cheer everyone else like crazy but BOO Rollins…he wants to really get a Philly treatment so give it to em and then in the offseason send his lil bitch ass packing back West where he would rather be

  10. TJ Says:

Im booing Rollins as well, everyone else can get my support though.

  11. Geoff Says:

Thats so lame. Lets all go be weak, midwestern toolbags who do what theyre told. you see european soccer? those people get death threats by their own fans if they dont play well in a preseason game. were nothing compared to that. what a bunch of crybaby whimps. disgraceful. follow the professionals on the team, listen to the manager, and win baseball games.

  12. Geoff Says:

im going on saturday, i dont even boo when i go to games, but i might boo jimmy rollins though.

  13. Sean Says:

I’m booing him when I go on wednesday

  14. TJ Says:

Seems like the general consensus is Fuck Rollins.

  15. Nationals#1 Says:

This is exactly what Jimmy was talking about… all of you who are spouting this boo Jimmy bullshit are the front runners he’s talking about. You’re the same people chanting MVP at every at bat last season and the first few games of this season. Booing him is not going to help anything at all. You guys are going to make him yet another disgruntled Phillie a la Schilling and Rolen

  16. Fran Says:

j-roll was a completely different person last year

  17. Bear Mike Says:

Nats: You really do not get it. Jimmy is a completely different player this year, not only in his performance, but primarily with his attitude. His body language speaks volumes. I don’t know how many Phillies games you actually go to (assuming you are really a Nats fan), but Jimmy has been given a major pass this year from the fans. Last year CBP almost shook to the ground with deafening chants of MVP, MVP! Jimmy used to be the spark plug of the Phillies even when he was having a rough time at the plate. This year Jimmy has been nothing but a punk. I have no clue what happened to him.

And as far as that stupid term of Frontrunner fans? I went to a week of spring training and watched 4 games and I have been to 18 regular season games so far this year at CBP. I have spent at the very least $7,000 going to Phillies games this year alone. And that is a lot of money for me. The one thing I want for my money is 100% effort from every player on the team. Is that to much to ask for? I think not. I understand that players can have slumps, but lack of effort is completely unacceptable too me. When a player demands a ton of money to play the game of baseball, they had better be prepared to produce to the level of their demands.

    GO PHILLLIES!!!!!!

  18. Rich the Mets Fan Says:

Wait, there are Nats fans? Really?

  19. Bear Mike Says:

I was only trying to be nice ;^)

  20. nationals#1 Says:

first of all, i’m not a nationals fan, I used this name to post one time and my computer saved it so I went with it. I’ve been a phillies fan my whole life and have been following this years team rabidly. Although I agree that Jimmy is not the same player this year I just can’t condone this type of treatment of one of our key players. I know he’s been cocky, running his mouth, a bad leader and a hole at the plate at various times this season but I refuse to turn on him just like that. We need Jimmy. He’s been on TV telling people that he needs us on his side. What good is booing him possibly going to do especially after the things he just said? (again I don’t agree with everything he said but I do understand where he is coming from. The bottom line is that the phillies are my team. They always have been, and I see no reason to boo them. That’s what the visiting team is for. That’s what the mets and the braves are for. So you can go out on your pointless booing missions and i’m going to cheer for my team, win or lose, like a real fan.

  21. Bear Mike Says:

Phillies Fan: Your point is well made. I also wholeheartedly support our Phillies – even when times are bad. The difference for me is that, within reason, I expect a certain level of performance and ABSOLUTE HUSTLE – 100% effort, every single inning of ever single game, all season long.

I do not know what you do to earn a living, but I can guarantee you that when (if) my level of performance at work drops off significantly, I am going to hear about it – one way or another. And if it happened like it is for “some” of our Phillies, it would be reflected in my annual salary increase and bonus. Like most of us on this blog, that is the harsh reality my friend. That is a major part of the problem. Everyday Joe’s paying a fortune to watch a game they love. A childs game of nothing but millionaires. I am partly to blame because, not only do I watch every single game on TV, I drive 90 miles round trip to pay to watch them as much as I possibly can, and I even fly to Florida to watch them play every March for one week. So yeah, I get it. It is my choice to do so, however frustrating it may be.

Although I love our Phillies, I will never blindly cheer for a ball player who appears to have given up. BTW, I have several Phillies jerseys (Rollins, Utley, Burrell, Hamels, Lidge) and every single game that I have gone to this year I have worn my Rollins #11 Red & White pinstripe jersey – just praying that Jimmy will find the heart of the NL MVP of last year. I don’t expect him to be the MVP again this year, but I certainly do not expect him to be the MVPunk either!

    GO PHILLIES!!!!!!

  22. Jason Says:

I was up in Boston a few weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to go to Fenway to catch a Red Sox – A’s game. Honestly, I could not believe the amount of cheering and support the Boston fans give out during the game. Every single out recorded by the visitors is cheered maniacally. After each player is annouced when walking to the plate, the fans go nuts. Now, while they don’t necessarily cheer when the home team makes an out, they certainly don’t go crazy with boos.

I feel that at the Bank there is so many other things going on that some fans attending the game become distracted and aren’t necessarily paying attention to whats going on. On the other hand, Fenway is so small and old that the only thing to pay attention to is the game. While I know that the majority of the people that visit this site and post here have a genuine interest in the game, I can confidently say that about 25% of the people attending Phils games these days just go for something fun to do, and could care less whats going on in the field.
