Follow-Up: Perception Key In Rollins Saga

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, August 14, 2008 11:46 AM

Last night was a bad mixture of things. The Phillies ran out to a big lead over the Dodgers, and as the night progressed and the news of Jimmy Rollins’ comments about Philadelphia fans grew, the lead shrank. By the end of the night, we were all fuming — a leader saying things we don’t want him to say; another bad loss.

Let’s concentrate on Rollins, and I’m pulling out Todd Zolecki’s blog post about the matter because he eloquently illustrated a point that I somewhat sprinkled into my vitriolic post last night. Point is, Rollins is from the West Coast. He doesn’t have the knowledge of Philadelphia fandom that we do. In fact, his most telling quote came at the very end, when asked where he was from.

Rollins is from Oakland, where “they just don’t show up,” he said. Bingo.

When taking a step back, Rollins is correct: We do waffle on our team. We’re happy as can be when they win; we’re angry and spiteful when they lose. Most East Coast cities are like this. Rollins saw both sides of the coin — the bad teams and angry crowds of the early 2000s, the good teams and happy crowds of the past three years. (And the quick-to-turn crowds when things go wrong lately.)

Rollins is also correct when comparing us to Saint Louis fans. Of course, Cardinals fans support their teams no matter what. That’s a different way of life, a slower, family friendly way of life. The Cardinals are the most white-bread franchise in baseball. That’s the extreme, the exception.

Rollins, meanwhile, is from an area where the fans “just don’t show up.” Even when winning. That’s how he sees it.

We’re not wrong because of what we know. He’s not wrong because of what he knows. I do think he could’ve thought before saying exactly what he said on national TV. With his place as “team leader,” he could’ve chose his words better. But as we look at this newest installment of “As Jimmy Turns: The Disappointing Season of 2008,” we should understand everyone’s perception.

  1. Don M Says:

    Tim..

    very well said!!

  2. J-Man Says:

Agreed couldn’t of said it any better…I’ve watched some Oakland games and their fans are almost as bad as the Marlins fans.

  3. Chase Mutley Says:

Apparently Jesus loves tacky Gucci sneakers. Why is money always wasted on the tasteless?

  4. Phil Says:

    Ugh, fuck Rollins.

  5. Unorignal Unfunny Bastard Says:

I like to post comments that make only myself laugh.. obviously nobody else laughs, but I didn’t have any toys as a child, so I post random comments on message boards and I think its great!!

  6. That Guy Says:

He is trying to start trouble. He said himself “I’m probably gonna catch a lot of flak for this…….” And then he continued anyway. A player from a less insulated and a more media saavy team (brian westbrook) would have had a more appropriate response.

  7. Phil Says:

Don M I hate football, but how can you say something so dumb? McNabb on a one man team? Westbrook is the best running back in football. Stop saying stupid shit.

  8. Phil Says:

Not to mention that the reason fans hate McNabb is because he’s always injured and because he is a choke artist.

  9. janice Says:

Thanks for posting Tim. This perspective is desperately needed here in Philly.

Some Phillies fans live their lives through this team and the ups and downs – there success depends on it – get a grip or get a life!

Some Phillies fans behave like Emotional females!

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

Hey, fake Don M, I’ve said this before: Stop spamming us with Eagles posts. Go to Bleeding Green Nation or the Eagles boards if you want to talk about the Birds.

  11. J-Man Says:

McNabbs just as bad as Rollins with his whole “Black QB are under more pressure bs”…I guess those guys just can’t handle the pressure when their not doing good and their gonna get booed.

  12. janice Says:

    j-man –
you injected race into this discussion. Jimmy didn’t. McNabb is not the issue the subject pertains to how the Philly fans flip-flop.

  13. Phil Says:

Janice, Phillies fans never flip flop. They may not go buy tickets to go watch them play when they suck, but that doesn’t mean they don’t stick by them.

  14. Phil Says:

This fake Don M is really annoying me.

  15. Phil Says:

Tim…something really needs to be done about this board. Can we please do registrations already?

  16. Suggestion Says:

even a $ membership..and it gets you a T-shirt or something… not too expensive, but something that will let people that want to be on here stay on..and people that want to just post junk, unfunny, unoriginal comments off..

This is a great site where we can all share our views and ideas and opinions on what we would like to see them do and why.. and due to this other nonsense, im really considering banning this site form my computer.. there has to be SOMETHING we can do here.

  17. Tim Malcolm Says:

We’re seeing what we can do. Some people are just idiots.

  18. janice Says:

to be in love with a team one day, then completed against the team or players the next day all based on whether they pass or fail/win or lose is immature and childish. I’m at the games and have stopped my 3 yr old son from booing with the crowd. these men sit in the stands and behave like children or better yet sissies!

  19. Rob Cowie Says:

I handled the fake “Don M”…

apparently the guy was posting from inside of some financial insitution in New York. His company is not going to be too pleased when they find out they are paying him to spam our website.

Sorry about about, Nation! We got it under control.

  20. Phil Says:

Thanks Rob. What a tool. Mets fans really have no lives.

  21. Don M Says:

Yo honestly, if that works.. Rob is the man…. I just stopped posting stuff cause it was getting too annoying to see my name on there every 4 seconds..

  22. Don M Says:

that was me under the suggestion by the way… what do you guys think about it?? Or would you lose sponsors for the site if less people were posting?

  23. Phil Says:

Janice, I boo players for not trying not because they’re doing bad. It’s a huge difference.

  24. James K. Says:

Pretty obvious Rollins is trying to get himself traded. God bless the team that gets him, as they’ll be getting an aging, average fielding, below average OBP’ing leadoff hitter with dwindling power.

Apparently $7 million a year isn’t enough for Mr. Rollins.

  25. Rob Cowie Says:

    Real Don M,

We have a spam program coded in the site and it works very well. It’s just the .001 per cent that gets through who wind up annoying everyone.

At this time we don’t feel that registration is needed. We know who comes here with good intentions and we’d like to thank all of you that do. A couple of malcontents are not going to make us drastically change the way we operate this website. It is a blog and open forum for topical discussions.

Throughout the year, we reward our readership and viewers with some fun free stuff and the opportunity to come out in force to take over a stadium of the opposition.

That’s why we are the best Phillies site on the internet. We aren’t sportswriters with websites disgusied as blogs or guys in our underwear ranting non-sensically about anything and everything. We are a collection of fans providing a place for other fans to discuss baseball.

Those that try to disrupt our status quo get dealt with.

  26. Don M Says:

as my boy Geoff would say.. WERD

  27. Don M Says:

I figured somebody, somewhere could see what the email address or whatever was and track these dopes, nitwits, and morons… and now, back to baseball

  28. Greg Says:

Don’t baseball players get media training these days? There are ways to answer these questions about fan support and the supposed reputation of Philly fans. I can point to Reggie Jackson as the most sophisticated practicioner of news media soundbites and building fan support. He understood the equation and how to leverage that support in his own interest. What it really boils down to is Rollins, et. al. are highly-compensated mercenaries who owe their alligience to their agents and their contracts. They don’t care what fans think simply because they have no incentive. Long-suffering Phils fans are once again reminded we are rooting for a uniform and a logo. The players who don that uniform simply don’t care.

  29. janice Says:

    phil what a joke.
“i boo players for not trying.”
like you can read their minds to discern if someone is trying or not. what if someone said they came to your job and booed you because you weren’t trying not because ur doing bad. haha! it sounds silly. childish!

nothing beats a try but a failure!

  30. Don M Says:

They really play for MLB.. and just happen to work in the “philadelphia office”… most of them would rather play somewhere with nice weather, night clubs and places to eat than play for a contender.. as long as they make their money, they don’t care where it is… SMART players say that they love everything about their city.. which is why fans still cheered for Burrell after he hit only .209 in 2002

  31. Don M Says:

Phil is dead on… if you have one knock against Jimmy Rollins its because he doesn’t seem to be going 100% this season… if you hustle all the time, people respect you and get over it much easier than if you dawg-it and still fail,, leave it all out on the field, and you become a HERO in this town!

  32. janice Says:

when it comes to the phillies consider this. either it’s meant to be or not meant to be. if their success as a team is not meant to be, why get your knickers in a twist?

    it doesn’t mean that you’re a failure.

  33. janice Says:

who want’s to be a hero in a town full of losers. we need to get over our loser mentality!

  34. Phil Says:

Janice, when Jimmy Rollins doesn’t run out routine ground balls that constitutes as not trying. If he doesn’t dive for a catch he should make that’s not trying. When he swings at a 1st pitching breaking ball that’s not trying. You obviously don’t know anything about baseball so stop posting stupid shit on here.

  35. Phil Says:

Speak for yourself, Janice. I’m not a loser. Maybe you are. Obviously you are.

  36. Don M Says:

Google “janice it hurts” …. see what she is like in real life.

  37. Geoff Says:

its all abotu the effort. when you dont give the effort, and then bury the fans and blame everyone else but yourself, you gotta go. just keep your mouth shut and play baseball like you did last year.

  38. Don M Says:

Can we at least agree that saying he isn’t one of the best SS in baseball is foolish?

I agree that he isn’t hustling at all… and saying things about the fans isn’t smart.. but there aren’t a lot of better, realistic options out there to replace him

  39. janice Says:

you guys obviously don’t play sports. or are you just that jaded. phil to interpret my comments as if I called you (personally) a loser. something is wrong with you but then again, you comments reflect that there is something wrong. anger. what’s up with your anger?

so answer my question. seriously – who want’s to be a hero in a town full of losers?

  40. Geoff Says:

vernon wells ius on waivers…will the jays pick up his money if we claim him?

i doubt, ill bet he gets pulled back.

  41. Rick Says:

Don M. – That is absolutely true! Aaron Rowand was a perfect example of that! After the wall incident he could do no wrong! He could strike out 3/4 times in a game and fans still wouldn’t get on him. If J-Roll does that, they’re all over him.

I think the thing the fans used to get all over Burrell about wasn’t the fact that he would get into slumps, it was that he would K looking! He has really cut back on that. It seems like his eye has been more sharp this year.

J-Roll is the best all-around shortstop Philly will probably ever have. He’s not a leadoff hitter and is misused in that role. I went back and reread his statement and it really wasn’t that bad. If he would have just left out the “frontrunners” part, it was simply the truth. Saying “frontrunners” though is just not acceptable.

Sure players get booed for bad play, but in what passionate city don’t they?

  42. Don M Says:

Did anyone ever figure out why teams like the Yankees place Jeter and others (that they would never trade) on waivers.. is it a mandatory thing? They just signed Wells to a big contract, so i doubt they let him go..

If you are a hero in a town full of losers, you stand out even more… where are you from janice??

  43. Rick Says:

    WTH is Janice talking about?

  44. Phil Says:

I played baseball all throughout my life until I shattered my wrist senior year. Just like you said, “like you can read their minds to discern if someone is trying or not.” Then I ask you this, how can you read my mind and say I didn’t play sports. Once again you are saying stupid shit. You’re right about me being angry. I get angry when people make really inaccurate comments and say things they have no idea what they are talking about. I’m also angry that my favorite player threw an entire fan base under a bus for his poor play this season.

  45. Bruce Says:

As Tim says..”we should understand everyone’s perception.” Amen to that and let’s move on. My only quibble with Rollins’ comments is that he probably should be more tactful knowing Philly fans and their alledged reputation as being fickle, “angry and spiteful”. Some “fans” even take satisfaction in being stereotyped as such. What Rollins has said is not news and see no need for all the pretentious whining here. We have more important concerns with team being mired with injuries and slumps.

  46. Rick Says:

I just want a solid game out of Myers tonight leading to win #6! Tonight is his true test! If he pitches well against this much improved Dodgers lineup, I’ll be convinced he’s back to #2 status!

Tim – I’d like to make a suggestion for a beer. Lefthand Brewery’s Sawtooth Ale. AWESOME beer from another cool Colorado Microbrewery.

  47. Geoff Says:

rowand is worshipped here, and always will be for running into a wall..

  48. Geoff Says:

i think they put these players on waivers and announce it to mask them putting other guys on waivers. illl bet the jays put burnett on waivers, but didnt announce it so they can have more leverage in a trade when he clears waivers. meanwhile, they send wells and this other guy on waivers knowing the other guy will get claimed and that wells will draw attention but will get pulled back if someomne claims him.

  49. janice Says:

i grew up in philly – born and continue to live.
if you have a team that has only one 1 ws in 125 years as you’re mentioned, how much sense does it make to lose it with them for making mistakes?
I don’t get angry – so phil call me any name that you want it will have no effect.
my comment about being a hero in a town of loser has to do with me wanting to be around winners and successful people. angry people are rarely successful – their anger illustrates there lack of being able to deal with dissapointments successfully.
so good luck with that issue phil. i doubt if you win with your anger issue.

  50. Phil Says:

Agreed. I hope he’s on the Wall of Fame some day.

  51. Phil Says:

Please use proper grammar. You probably live in a fucking trailer park(since you can make assumptions about me I guess I can make them about you, right?) Most Philadelphia sports fans are bitter and angry people. What do you expect, for us to be happy? This city hasn’t won a championship since the year I was born, and I wasn’t alive for it anyway. Regardless, I am a winner. I’m a college student getting my degree in engineering. I’m sure that’s much more of a winner than you are.

  52. janice Says:

yes phil you are a self proclaimed winner! congrats!

  53. Rick Says:

Winners and successful people usually use the enter key between what I think are supposed to be points.

They also usually use ‘their’ when they’re to show ownership instead of ‘there’ which is a location.

I’m sorry I couldn’t resist. Bad grammar really irks me.

  54. janice Says:

haha! good one rick! and very true!

  55. Don M Says:

on Yahoo sports MLB page… there is a link from Tuesday, an article about Baseball “Fan Loyalty Index”… judging attendance as it relates to Winning Percentage from 1991-2007.

Texas Rangers have the Most Loyal, followed by the RedSox, Braves, Cubs, Pirates

THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES have the Least Loyal, followed by Twins, A’s, Tigers, and Angles

The rankings were done by FORBES.. so you know its good..

And you know what.. they didn’t deserve our money in the late 90s, early 2000s anyway becuase they sucked balls.. I watched them on TV still, but didn’t go to the park nearly as often as I do now..

I tried to link the page, but it wouldn’t submit on here…??

  56. Phil Says:

Janice are you here to stir up trouble? I’ve never seen you post on this board before.

  57. Rick Says:

Well the entire park factor also probably plays into that? The Vet was not a good place to see a game. I think even if the Phillies were atrocious right now, they would still have better attendance than they did at the Vet just simply because CBP is a great place to watch a game.

To anyone who has been, how are Blueclaws games? I’m thinking about going either Sunday or Monday? Is it a good experience and are the tickets fairly reasonable?

  58. janice Says:

phil I’m just here to express my thoughts not stir up trouble. i hope you are not suggesting that because I don’t agree with you, that I’m a trouble maker?

  59. Phil Says:

Oh man, the Vet was such a scummy place, but I miss it.

  60. The voice of reason (original) Says:

I don’t care what he has to say. All I want is for the Phils to win a WS.

Damn right my love is conditional……….but the term “Die Hard Phillies Fan” is redundent. If we still here……then we are die hard.

If front running means I get pissed when the players suck or lack the effort that a 12 year old kid could give, then I’m a front runner.

  61. Phil Says:

You are stirring up trouble. You are bashing the fan base like Rollins just did.

“who want’s to be a hero in a town full of losers. we need to get over our loser mentality!”

“Some Phillies fans live their lives through this team and the ups and downs – there success depends on it – get a grip or get a life!”

“Some Phillies fans behave like Emotional females!”

“the subject pertains to how the Philly fans flip-flop.”

Do I have to continue digging up more shit you’ve said? To me that’s stirring shit up.

  62. lilgartrn Says:

Janice – I do agree with your sentiments about booing during the game, especially some of the colorful comments that fly out of the 300 level, with children around, which is horrible. However, Rollins’s comments were out of line from a player who is displaying no heart on the field this season. I’ve said it before, if Victorino or Jamie Moyer made that statement, when they have busted their butts so far this season, I may have actually taken it a bit to heart… But Rollins needs to spend more time working on his swing (or lack thereof) and less time mouthing off.

  63. Phil Says:

Not only are you coming on here and talking trash, you are doing so with the worst grammar imaginable. You are fucking dumb. You are going to call me a loser. A winner knows the difference between their, they’re, and there. You obviously do not.

  64. Eb Says:

Rick….Left Hand Brewing Company? Go with their Stout it is the second greatest Stout ever, next to Stoudt’s Fat Dog Stout. Then again it is summer and a Stout might not sit well.

    BRING BACK THE VET

Rollins comment will never beat Von Hayes Quote “Let them boo me. I will still be eating steak Everynight”

  65. Don M Says:

“Some Phillies fans behave like Emotional females!”

…is completely true thoguh. good call whoever said that one..

BUT enough with the name-calling and stuff on here.. its one thing to argue who is better, or about prospects, what position players they need to improve, etc.. to when people start cyber-fighting about their lives and acting tough.. its not that cool..

Janice.. did you watch that “janice it hurts” video yet.. google it, its priceless

  66. Don M Says:

That’s not the only kinda meat that Von Hayes puts in his mouth !!! (ba dum dum)

  67. Phil Says:

lilgartrn I 100% agree with the latter half of your argument, but I can’t agree with the former. When you take a child to a Phillies game you have to expect that. I got burn by a cigarette and a beer spilled on me at my 1st Phillies game. I also heard every curse word imaginable. My grand pop took me and felt bad he took me, but I told him that’s okay, I hear the same language on the board walk and he laughed. I’m not excusing these fans that act this way. I for one am aware of my surroundings and don’t curse with kids around, but it is going to happen no matter what section you are. There’s no escaping it, so if you are going to bring a child to a game be prepared for the worst.

  68. Rick Says:

Eb – Stouts always sit well! :-)

That said I haven’t had Left Hand’s. I’ll have to try it sometime. Last time I was in Philly I went to a bar that had their beer on draft! I can’t remember what bar it was though. You know anyplace that has it?

  69. janice Says:

well I’m a pitcher for a pretty good softball team here at work. I’m one of the only women on the team and I hear it all the time from the guy – complaining about the other players when we lose but not when we win. they sound like girls – emotional. regarding jimmy (yes rick i fail to start a new paragraph) either he’s a good player or a bad one but to me, if you are on his jock one day then off the next is flip flopping. i read his comments and i agree with him so therefore i’m in opposition to you all. but that’s cool. philly has a small failure (town) mentality not a big successful city way of thinking. the fans need to stop complaining!

  70. lilgartrn Says:

How can we have a small failure mentality with the lack of championships this -city has to show for it…. If it’s just about “the love of the game” why not have free admission and play in someone’s backyard for god’s sake….
All evidence to the contrary – we support these teams no matter what the end result of the season is, but we are critical when we want a team that has been in 1st place most of the season, to really play like they deserve it… Sorry Janice, but you are oversimplifying.

  71. Phil Says:

Janice is here to stir up trouble, that’s all lilgartrn. She’s never posted on this board until today, so it’s obvious that is what she’s here to do.

  72. janice Says:

    perhaps you’re right!

    later guys gotta go!

  73. Phil Says:

    See, and I was correct.

  74. Joe Says:

So what do you want Rollins to do, borrow a wig from Larry Andersen? Just ridiculous. Who gives a sh*t. He isn’t the first player to have issues with the way fans behave in Philadelphia. Yes, he should probably be aware of the larger context and why the city is so short on patience. But why do people get so affronted, like Philly fans are somehow above reproach – like because you’ve all *suffered*, that entitles you to act however you want and any player who dares say anything critical about it is a vicious heathen who must be shouted down. And what, he can’t say how he feels on TV, he’s just supposed to say what pleases you – because “you” pay his salary? Get real. Can you just pause for a second and question the mentality which produces such a reaction? … No. It’s more like saying, I’m a good player and I’ve done a lot for this team, but unless I’m having an MVP season, the fans have never been behind me. Rollins has every damn right to say that, because it’s completely true

  75. lilgartrn Says:

But he should be focusing on how to win some games and get into the post-season, don’t you think? It’s not like they’re playing like Tampa Bay, and we’re being selfish a-holes… Come on – I understand that we are vocal and dislike our teams speaking out about our disdain, but 1st and foremost, we are paying for season tickets for a reason…. This is coming from an MVP who has been benched for no hustle, and refusing to take a team bus to Shea… I expect more than that from a top tier player, and so should you

  76. David, The Mets fan from Queens Says:

I remember my visits to “the Vet” and “the Bank vividly. With that said, I’d just like to say that this Mets-Phillies rivalry is very interesting because, as fans, we’re both very similar. In general, we’re both very passionate about our respective teams. How many hours do we spend watching our teams play baseball? How often do we suffer and rejoice with our respective ball club? More specifically, Mets and Phillies fans are very involved in the game – we are very sensitive. Believe me, whenever I sit at the Lodge section at Shea right beside the Mets’ bullpen, I harrass the hell out of ANY reliever warming up; I don’t need to explain why I do so. Likely, I’m sure you Phillies fans yell whenever Ryan Howard strikes out! We don’t yell at our players because we disdain them personally, but because they aren’t performing to their potential; they are underachieving! If anything, our repeated scolding of these players is indicative of our passion for the sport and our city’s ball club.

I hope that J-Roll’s comments won’t entail any hostility between the fans and himself as that will only worsen his performance which impairs your team’s chances. As a sports fan, I hate it when players in any team are hurt. I rather beat the Braves with Chipper (”Larry”) in their lineup than without him -it would speak volumes about the your respective team.

The team that wins the NL East will probably not go further than the NLDS. Who would agree with that?

  77. lilgartrn Says:

David – well said, and unfortunately, I’m in agreement with the NL East statement at the current level of play. If either team were consistent, I may not feel that way.

  78. BeatWitUgglaStick Says:

I agree that the winner of the East Mets, Phillies, or Marlins can not match up with the Cubs, or Brew Crew

  79. Eb Says:

Rick..I remember seeing one of their beers on draft at a Bar on South Street. But i was pretty Adam Eaton’d that night (Bombed, if you didnt pick that up). So i cant remember the bar

  80. Eb Says:

    David

  81. Eb Says:

it cut me off, but Dave you are the only met fan with interesting comments

  82. Rick Says:

If the Phillies were firing on all cylinders, they could make it past the NLDS and potentially to the WS. Their inconsistency is what is so painful. They have the talent but just aren’t performing as a team.

I mean the Mets have a decent rotation (only because I think Maine and Pelfrey have hit some bumps) and lineup, but their bullpen is teetering on the brink of horrendous.

There really is no bad part of this team. Every part of the team is capable of playing with any other team in baseball. They just aren’t putting games together as a team though.

If it’s not one thing, it seems it’s another every given night. They hit but the starter stinks. The starter is good but they don’t hit. They hit and the starter pitches well but the bullpen gives it up.

It’s frustrating to watch because everyone knows they could go on a 10-game win streak starting today and pull ahead of the division by 6 games just to give it right back when they hit their next funk 3 weeks from now.

  83. Rick Says:

Jeez I just went back and read that post. I should have typed ‘team’ a few more times.

  84. BeatWitUgglaStick Says:

Our starting pitching can not hang with the cubs or brewers …. mets can match cubs and brewers starting pitching but your right there bullpen is not good … but in playoffs they can move pel and maine to bullpen and go with a 3 man rotation

  85. lilgartrn Says:

LOL – maybe the phils need to read that… I’m only hoping that Manuel is reading this and reading back verbatim in the locker room.

  86. NEPA Says:

Haha, Rick, only the third paragraph.

  87. Mike N Says:

Trade Jimmy to Oakland where he won’t be bothered by the fans (since they don’t show up). Seriously. Move him now while we can get some good value back.

  88. Geoff Says:

yeah, but beane wont touch that trash. he wouldnt take him.

  89. TJ Says:

    Is he pulling a Manny?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&page=rumblings

Worth the read and a great view on the thinking of Manny and other player to come. I know some of you are saying who the fuck cares about Manny, I just think this may relate to Rollins lately.

  90. Rick Says:

So what’s the answer to this? No more contracts lasting more than a year or two?

Hey, couldn’t that lead to an easier implementation of a salary cap and a little more parity in the sport instead of seeing the Yankees and Red Sox in the playoffs every year?

  91. Rick Says:

BTW – The only real winner if this becomes commonplace as far as I can see is the freakin’ agents. They’re as bad as crooked lawyers! Less years/contract equals more negotiations = more $$$$ in their pocket. Yes/no?

  92. Fred Says:

Actually who cares what Rollins thinks? What I do care about is his lack of hustle and laissez fair attitude this year.

Minus all of the peripheral issues, he’s having an average Jimmy Rollins year. Career average – .277 / Average this year .276; career OBP – .332 / this year – .344; career SLG – .442 / this year – .449 . Exclude last year’s stats as an aberration and he’s right on track for his career averages.

  93. Mike N Says:

Fred- Exactly, that’s why they should think about moving him before that MVP aura completely wears off.

  94. Tyler Says:

If you guys haven’t seen the video, here it is.

  95. Fred Says:

Why aren’t people wig’n out on Myers’ f-bombs, Howard’s record setting strikeout pace/terrible fielding or Utley’s prolonged hitting slump?

This season is a collective effort on the part of the ’stars’ on our team. The bottom line is the personal opinions of these players mean very little. The only thing we are really interested in is results. And when the results aren’t there – the inmates get restless. Always will be – always has been.

  96. rico brogna for prez Says:

As a mets fan…. i find it oddly similar to what the mets were saying about us in the beginning of the year. It got to the point that people were debating whether or not you are a real “fan ” if you boo.

    Anyway,
I hate the phillies………but they scare the hell out of me.

I hate the marlins …….. but they wont be there at the end of the year….:)))

Everyone on this board wrote off the mets in April…..based on last year.

they dont have the pitching………and yet they are tied for first.

they dont have the heart of the phillies……………and yet they are tied for first.

They dont have the hitting, their too old, they have no bullpen (they have blown 20 saves…. 9 in the 9th inning)………..and yet they are tied for first.

I dont know what this means, only that the phillies and the mets will both play very good (at times) very bad (at times) and they will drive both sets of fans crazy. I respect the phillies, I just cant stand them. I want to beat the hell out of rollins and i hope utley goes 0 fer 200 against us. I expect you feel the same about us. Let the season begin!!!

  97. JStroll Says:

Wow, reading the comments from Janice was amusing. I’d like her to talk to Boston fans. They were in the “No win mentality” for over 100 years, so they aren’t successful right? Oh wait, they just won 2 WS in the last 4 years.

  98. JStroll Says:

I’d also like to point out to Janice that being a professional athlete comes with baggage. Hustle, commitment, integrity. Let’s tell your 3 year old the things Jimmy Rollins doesn’t do as a pro athlete. What a good role model. You should be upset that he isn’t setting a good example for your child, not bashing fans for acknowledging his faults. Part of his job is to entertain fans and be professional at all times. I guess he can show up late to work and that is okay in his books. C’mon, if Rollins wasn’t blessed with amazing abilitiy, he’d be just another average Joe in the world. These guys are humans too. They should be held to the same standards as anyone else. Being outspoken about others, being late, not hustling and producing on the field (entertainment for us) is not part of the job description.

  99. Georgie Says:

They just played an audio clip on DNL of Jimmy calling Best Damn Sports Show to elaborate on his comments about Phillies fans. I missed the beginning, but he didn’t really recind what he said, just softened it a bit, for lack of a better word.

  100. Mike N Says:

“These guys are humans too. They should be held to the same standards as anyone else. Being outspoken about others, being late, not hustling and producing on the field (entertainment for us) is not part of the job description.”

Agreed – maybe someone making minimum wage at a shitty job could be excused for not giving 100%, being late, etc. But Jimmy’s making a little more than minimum wage- he has no excuse.

  101. That Guy Says:

J-strolls agent is moonlighting as “Janice”

  102. Georgie Says:

They also were saying that Jimmy feels very protective of Ryan Howard, and I guess he’s been getting booed more than some others , and Jimmy resents that. They were/are? roommates and very good friends, apparently he feels like a big brother to ryan. Not saying this is true, but that was one of their(DNL guys) possible explanations for Jimmy’s attitude.

  103. Bruce Says:

To Joe~ It cracked me up when I read your comment..”So what do you want Rollins to do, borrow a wig from Larry Andersen?”

As an older fan , I can remember back in the eighties hall of famer Mike Schmidt being booed so many times by Philly boobirds that he referred to them as “beyond help” and Veterans Stadium as a “mob scene uncontrollable.” Shortly after those remarks, when it came time to take the field he was wearing a fright wig and shades. It released the tension between him and the fans as they laughed and actually gave him an ovation. I wonder if Larry Andersen owned that very same wig? (laughter)

  104. Georgie Says:

towards the end of his “clarification”, Jimmy said it isn’t right for fans to boo Ruiz just because they want Coste to play, Ruiz has a job to do when he’s in there so let him do it, something to that effect.

  105. Bill Says:

Awesome post Tim. You are always spot on!

    http://myteamrivals.typepad.com/phightin_phils_phorum/

  106. That Guy Says:

I find it amusing that Rollins signed a contract extension when the team kinda sucked and NOW he’s unhappy? Ryan Howard has not escaped unscathed but he hasn’t really been thrown under the bus either. I mean, he set the record for striking out in a sport that goes back to the reconstruction era and its been my experience that the fans have exhibited a certain level of patience with him. Bottom line…..The Phils continue to be a public relations disaster.

  107. Geoff Says:

bruce, schidt said that it helped him become a better player. it made him realize he needed to challenge himself harder.

  108. Geoff Says:

well if you take the salary cap out of whack then you get the nfl, which is total trash and unwatchable. you gotta keep a salary cap under control. like the nhl

  109. Phil R. Says:

Rollins doesn’t get it! people are losing jobs. Inflation is rampant. Naturally fans expect a lot from their sports heroes to feel better about their lives. I’ve been a Pat Burrel fan because he doesn’t complain even when he’s had some difficulty. that’s class. How can one accept an attitude by a player who obviously shows distress every day in front of his teammates, then complains that the fans are too tough. He should count his lucky stars that he has gotten this opportunity to earn more in one year than most people do in a lifetime. And those are the bench players!

Jimmy, stop complaining and do what it takes to fix your mental state and get back in the game as a professional and not an immature boy.
I have the right to say this because I’ve been a Phillies fan for 50 years.

  110. PJS Says:

i have a family of 4, i used to go to the park 4 to 5 times a year, nowadays for 4 tickets its close to $100 food close to 50 parking $20 gas for my car well you know how gas
prices are, if i spend half a weeks salary i feel i deserve the
right to boo when i want not crazy cursing boos but you get the point, Philadelphia is a blue coller city all you have to do is play hard and we will love you ask Aaron Rowand
J Roll is a primadonna as who cant handle it, he tries to be
a leader but he dont have it in him, he openes his mouth to make NY hate him now he managed to have his fans hate him as well, i think when you sign that contract you take everything that comes with it like the boos & cheers. Play Hard and grow up JROLL
