Gameday: Dodgers (65-63) At Phillies (69-59)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, August 23, 2008 03:00 PM
After a nice win backed by a strong offensive output, the Phillies will turn to ace Cole Hamels to try and at least gain a split in this four-gamer. Hamels goes up against Dodger youngster Clayton Kershaw, who got a no decision (3 ER, 6 IP) against the Phillies two weeks back.
Kershaw County: Kershaw has gone at least six innings in his last five starts, lowering his ERA from 5.18 to 3.59.
Cole Streak: Hamels pitched seven starts until his 10th win, the most he’s gone without one in his career. In those seven starts he gave up just 18 earned runs in 45 innnings.
Career Chris: With four RBI last night, Chris Coste tied his season high (32), which he accomplished in 2006.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (10-8) 3.22 ERA
Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw (2-3) 3.59 ERA
Gametime: 3:55 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, partly cloudy
TV: FOX
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Burrell/Howard/Victorino/Werth/Feliz/Coste/Hamels

Your gameday beer: This one’s from Geoff, who recommends Stoudt’s Fat Dog, an offering from the great brewery west of Philadelphia. It’s an oatmeal stout, which is darker, sometimes heavier, laced with oatmeal flavor and high in malty content. I’m a fan of oatmeal stouts, especially when good, strong food is paired with it. Maybe some honey-glazed ham and sweet potatoes today. I will be cooking out — barbecue chicken is on the menu.
Go Phillies!

When will they learn that 3 first inning runs and then slumber just doesn’t make it? After scoring 2 in the 3rd, the Dodgers got Hamels in 2 runner hot water in the 4th from which Hamels thankfully escaped.

Very impressive so far this afternoon. Is this offense beginning to turn this ship around? I certainly hope so! Great job all around today.

Thanks for putting that one up tim, quality beer….
I went today, they roughed up kershaw and cole looked nice overall. solid win. pat was really hitting the ball nicely today.
this team is so bizarre. dead for months and then they drop 8 and 9 on the dodgers back to back. good start to this 4-game series.

Geoff Geary just pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for the ’stros as they beat the Mets! We are now but one and a half games behind in the NL East! And they feel us breathing down their necks.
August 23rd, 2008 at 11:19 pm
no joe, i really cant say i feel you breathing down our necks, face it, we own you this season
August 23rd, 2008 at 11:31 pm

August 24th, 2008 at 2:38 am
mets are in first place? in august? where have I heard this before? And we’re only 1.5 back this year
August 24th, 2008 at 3:01 am
Keep that offense cranking. Maybe a sweep is more than possibility!
August 24th, 2008 at 5:57 am
Let’s just make sure we keep the offense on today, before gloating. Still quite a few games left. Need to keep the pitch/offense going, go PHILS!! BTW – can we intentionally walk Manny at each at bat today?? He’s batting .600 against Blanton, per sportscenter??
August 24th, 2008 at 8:40 am
One rule of thumb…….never talk shit about another team after you’ve bashed your own team for weeks. Its one or the other.
August 24th, 2008 at 9:23 am
I agree with the consensus. The Phils have now won 5 of 6, but the majority of folks here gave this team up for dead after the loss on Thursday to the Nats. Meanwhile, the Mets have been winning like crazy, and getting production from everyone outside of Duaner Sanchez, but finally lose a lopsided game last night. Now, suddenly, someone thinks the Phils are “breathing down the necks” of the Mets. Can we be any more fickle? So, let me guess, if the Mets win today and the Phils lose it means the Phils are all but eliminated again, right?
Let’s talk trash when we wrap up the division. Otherwise, let’s concentrate on keeping this team on it’s current role and allow the Mets to self-destruct on their own.
August 24th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Were done!..Thats it!..Stick a fork in them!…Go eagles!…HAHA,there were the comments when we lost the third game to the Nationals..I gotta laugh..
Looks to me like some of you are(dare I say it)FRONTRUNNERS

I still am sure the Mets feel us breathing. I concede that *you* don’t feel it, METS guest poster. You are probably rock solid in your convictions. That’s good. Admirable even. Unlike the team you support, you didn’t catch your wife in bed with the UPS driver and have to suppress the crushing feelings of doubt and imminent betrayal that follow ever after. Your insecurities are manageable, but I have to believe that Jose Reyes is wondering if he’s going to choke again this fall. And David Wright is wondering the same thing about him. And let us not even speak of Aaron Heileman captaining your bullpen.
Come on. “Seven games up with seventeen to play.” How can you POSSIBLY think this one is in the bag in late August? Why is this year different? See? I’m getting to you already. That whisper in the back of your mind is getting louder.
And Truth, I’m not fickle. I was not one of the “giving up” posters you reference, so I’m entitled to make the “breathing” comment.
The Mets face Randy Wolf today. In the parlance of our METS guest, I believe he “owns” the Amazins. We wish him good luck.
August 24th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
the amazins currently own randy wolf 3-0 at the moment, thank you very much joe.
August 24th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
nevermind 3-3 haha
August 24th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Astros just beat the Mets 6-4. You were right that Randy Wolf didn’t excercise any ownership today. I suspect you were wrong about everything else, though.
Visit us again.
August 24th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
i shall visit again 2nd place phills, at least you guys are 4-9 vs us this year, goood job guys
August 25th, 2008 at 12:19 am
hey — once again, Phils win and Mets lose. GO PHILS!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 pm
hahaha where’s that ahole Mets fan now? Mets get BLOWN AWAY by the Cubs tnight, Phillies rock the Braves (no surprise), and oh, what’s this, deja vu? No, just another year watching the better team win and the Mets fans whine about what happened. lol. Over rated from the start. Hey, maybe you should go get some more washed-up players that cost too much in the off season. Oh wait, you did that already. hahaha!
