Gameday: Marlins (60-54) At Phillies (62-51)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, August 07, 2008 11:56 AM
Kyle Kendrick and the offense led a shutout of the Marlins, 5-0, Wednesday night. Today the Phillies wrap up the important three-gamer with the Fish with a Businessperson’s Special.
Cole Snap: Cole Hamels hasn’t won a game since early July. His last two starts are ones we’d like to write off — he gave up four runs in an inning to the Cardinals last time out (five total), losing to Kyle Lohse.
Can’t Do: Hamels should see better success against the Fish today, since the Marlins cannot hit him particularly well. Only Jorge Cantu (.375, 3 HR, 3 RBI) has hit him this season, but Cantu is hitless for the three-game series in Philly.
Another Welcoming Party: For the third straight game the Phils will face a Marlins pitcher making one of his first starts in 2008. Chris Volstad, making his fifth ever, has never faced the Phillies.
Vampires?: The Phillies are an ugly 14-20 in day games this season.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (9-7) 3.37 ERA
Marlins: Chris Volstad (2-2) 3.25 ERA
Gametime: 1:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 84, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Bruntlett/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gameday beer: As I love my raspberry beers, I present to you Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock. A German beer, it’s brewed in Michigan. So you can find it in America. It’s a nice choice for a summer day such as this. Eat a nice garden salad while enjoying this fine sipper.
Go Phillies!

August 7th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Seems like Chollie has given up on trying new lineups
August 7th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
“Drop Dead Fred(dy)”
Assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Wednesday that the Phillies aren’t interested in re-signing free agent Freddy Garcia after watching him work out in front of a dozen teams earlier this week.
“He’s got a ways to go,” Amaro said. “For us, I don’t think we believe that he’s a guy that could help us this year. He threw OK. The feeling is that he’s going to come back, but he probably couldn’t help us in September.”
August 7th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
need a big game out of Hamels today, to put some of these injury questions aside for at least the next 4 days.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Hamels better pitch well or we’ll be in trouble. I have a horrible feeling he’s going to pitch a piss poor game and then go onto the DL.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
“Vampires?: The Phillies are an ugly 14-20 in day games this season.”
Props to the brass for bringing back the blue hats. It really worked well last time…
August 7th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
anyone have mlb.tv PREMIUM? is it worth it?
August 7th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Yep, must be the hats.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Brian Giles was claimed by the Red Sox…at least it wasn’t the Muts. Where will they even find room for Giles in that stacked outfield?
August 7th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Ruiz is starting instead of Coste.
August 7th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Ruiz should start over Coste in a Hamels game. Ruiz calls a great game for Hamels, and when Hamels starts you typically don’t need as much run support.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
And so it begins…
August 7th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
True, but Cole typically gets no run support.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
he’s definitely hurt.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Hey guys have some questions for you guys?? that ok
August 7th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Yeah I didn’t replace the lineup immediately. It’s fixed now.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Hamels’ fastball has some nice zip on it today.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Goddamn MLB TV package doesnt work because I live in NJ, therefore I can only listen to the game at work
August 7th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

August 7th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
jj23, of course.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
ok thanks Mike T. any suggestions???
August 7th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
eb: first, go into your account, change your information to a different part of the country, let’s say texas. of course, leave your credit card info as it is, and tell the customer service rep that you’ve been down there for awhile and it has always worked, but for some reason today you’re blacked out. he/she will ask for the zip code, shoot some random texas zip code off, and then they should reset it for you.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Like best storep- best place to eat- to visit on are day off
We wanna go go the “ROCKY” steps thats a must and build my little niece a philly phantic
August 7th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
JJ23, I had some serious trouble making sense of that post. All I got out of it is that your fiance is a “huge baseball guy.”
August 7th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
sorry jj23, i have no idea what you’re asking, haha.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
wheelers gotta be the biggest dufus
August 7th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
interesting..the red sox claimed giles
August 7th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
sorry eb, i left out the 2nd step: call customer service.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I am going to my 1st phillies game with my fiance’ Aug. 22nd and we are staying 2 nights and may watch the game on sat. Is there anything we have to do in the bark or out of the park. I dont wanna miss anything. WE like to have fun and shes a HUGEfan and she wants to know if any players are real-close with each other. like Best Friends. Do they sell the old scholl player shirts for todays players???
Phil Says:
August 7th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Why would you want to know which players are best friends?
August 7th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Way to swing first pitch after a four-pitch walk, Ryan.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
sorry just had a minor procedure so im on a little meds.. I am just looking for things we can do when we get there. Is there something we must do or somewhere we must see??? WHo has the best stores to buy things?? I my niece wants a phily phantic, but we staying on Sat and dont know if we are going to the game yet and didn know if theres something around that will be good to see Thanks for your help
August 7th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
She wanted to get both of their shirts to wear for each game if go to both
August 7th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
You can do the build-a-phanatic right in the park, so that takes care of that.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
hahahahaha Kalas is so old.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Yeah Tim…these hitters are just not fundamentally sound at all.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
those player shirts are like 40-50 bucks, those t-shirt number things.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
alright jj23, here it goes:
in the park – i suggest getting there as early as possible, around 2 hours before the game. go in through the outfield gates to Ashburn Alley, watch batting practice, walk around the stadium, etc. get some food at tony luke’s or bulls bbq. enjoy the game.
outside the park? – um, i dunno man, there are plenty of things to do in philadephia. kinda depends on where you’re staying or where you’d like to go.
are the players close? – i am friends with zero of the philadelphia phillies. not sure why your fiance wants to know that. someone else may have those answers for you.
shirts – you can get some 70’s/80’s style jersey t-shirts in the stadium. they’ll run you 25-30 bucks.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
hahaha “i am friends with zero of the philadelphia phillies.”
August 7th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Thanks man for your ya we are staying in DOUBLE TRee..
I heard ROlins and Howard were tight and Howard lived with Jimmy b4
August 7th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Something tells me we’re losing this one. I wish Feliz was at 3B. He woudlda had that.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I hear the place is awesome and can not wati to go.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Matt Treanor? Cody Ross? Come on, Cole.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
T-Mac is killing the game because he wants to suck Kurt Angle’s dick.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I absolutely feel the sexual tension there
August 7th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
i hope english is not your primary language, because if it is, i wouldn’t call those “little meds”
August 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Tim,
I sent you email to hit me up on AIM. Just get at me on my screen name – Mistaaah Cowie. I want to go over the itinerary that I reserved for the trip and all.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
our 6, 7 and 8 hole hitters are straight junk.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I think my favorite comment on here about T-Mac was someone called T-Mac a closet Mets fan, and someone responded with “Yea, he’s a closet somethin.” I laughed out loud on that one.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
The back of this order is so hopeless. If Ruiz hits an RBI here I’ll bow down and call him god.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Ruiz is such trash.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Yeah they are. feliz is ok sometimes when hes in there. werth usually bats higher lately.
i saw hamels against the marlins in May get straight up ROCKED. he gave up like 7 runs. hes definitely not ready to be a real ace yet. hes our ace, but not brandon webb status yet.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
ground ball to shortstop… so surprising
August 7th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
cody ross and luis gonzalez went deep on him that day.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Yes Ryan lived with Jimmy for awhile I believe when he was first called up.
Go on the ballpark tour! It’s a must for any Phillies fan to do at least once. I think you might have to book a reservation ahead of time but a couple days should do.
I like going to the scoreboard porch (upstairs) Harry The K’s to have a bite and a beer while watching BP. Definitely get there 2 hours before gametime to do this. I believe Ashburn Alley opens 2.5 hours before gametime.
For merchandise, I suggest going to Modell’s or JcPenney’s. They are more reasonable than the Majestic store. Modell’s has a pretty big selection too.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Geoff, was that the game during the like 8-2 homestand? I was at that game, and he was just terrible.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
This is a sorry excuse for a bottom of the order.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Shoot the way he’s pitching lately, he’s not even KK status.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
What a play!
August 7th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Good job Chase!
August 7th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Cole Hamels will be the best pitcher in the NL in 2 years. He’s a #1 but he’s not the best #1 out there…not even close.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
That was the game. He looked like a bad AAA piece of junk on that day.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
We can dream of the day that we have a #1 to force Hamels to #2.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
if we don’t start hitting this F’ing bum…
August 7th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Can Cantu only field well against the Phillies?
August 7th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
again, good starting pitcher = lineup cant hit
August 7th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Is there a delay at the game?
August 7th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Volstad is going to take a no-no into the 6th, the Phils will score one run in the 8th after leaving 42 men stranded in scoring position, and lose 2-1. Volstad will build off his great start by giving up 24 runs in 3 innings to the Padres. Why do we make every rag-tag POS look like Pedro Martinez circa 1999?
August 7th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
The Phils really brought the lumber today! Does anyone else feel a change of the hitting coach is in order? Doesn’t seem like they ever have a plan at the plate.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
yeah, i think milt thompson has gotta go in favor of someone who can team them how to be major league hitters.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Dan Murphy has 2 more hits than the Phillies so far today.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
I just typed on here the other day that if the Phils don’t make the playoffs, I think Milt and Dubee will go.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
they both should go even if they do make the playoffs. and take ruben amaro with them.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Listen to me blab about the Phillies in 5 minutes on
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/TheRopolitans
August 7th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
What a surprise – Howard struck out.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I don’t see why Dubee would go, this is an over-achieving staff. I’d like to kick Milt in his ass, though. SOMEONE has to buy these clowns a clue at the plate.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I think they should offer the Marlins hitting coach and the Cardinals pitching coach double whatever they’re getting paid now!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Jesus Christ, this guy is gonna no hit us.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Marlins hitting coach is similar to ours. Long ball or nothing. Cantu brought his glove today…wtf.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Dubee seems to have done a good job this team and I do wonder whether the lack of hitting is really down to Milt but he’ll be made the scapegoat
August 7th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
It’s sad. We’re hitting him hard. Why do the Fish play good defense against us and only us? They’re so horrible in the field.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Do the Phillies batters look at video of the opposing pitcher before games/series? It seems like so many mediocre pitchers fool the crap out of them. Hey jj, what kind of meds are they??
August 7th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
i dont like dubee because the velocity issue always comes up with these guys’ fastballs.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
How is Samuel on the Wall of Fame?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
samuel only played a few years here. that doesnt make any sense
August 7th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
they need another world series ring. theyre running out of people to put up there.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Muts are up 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th. Santana is at 99 pitches. He can only go 1 more inning tops. Hopefully Padres can get to the pen.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I LOVE Sarge-he cracks me up!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Geoff:
Dykstra
Daulton
Kruk
Schilling
Liberthal
Morindini
Yeah…I’m out of ideas. haha
August 7th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
How about Sarge as the hitting coach? Wouldn’t work though, he’s too brutally honest and would hurt the feelings of too many players.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Yeah, makes you wonder how much longer they’ll let him call games-Phillies like homer announcers!!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Mike T…Is there a number I can call. I emailed them and i get no response
August 7th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Hamels looks a lot better today. (knocks on wood)
August 7th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I love sarge because he gives wheeler sh*t all the time
August 7th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
does anyone give a phuck this dudes dad is a dentist
August 7th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
thats what they need. they need someone brutally honest somewhere on that managerial staff to be hard on them. charlie can be charlie but someone else has to be mean to them.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Fred, are you saying today’s players are too sensitive?? I remember Kerrigan saying how Randy Wolf was offended when he yelled at him. PLEASE.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
at least ruiz can’t gidp now. i bet he still ground out to short just for old times sake.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
This is pathetic to watch. It’s like they’re not even trying. If we lose this game 1-0 and Hamels goes 8 ip 10 k’s Scot will come on and talk about how much Hamels sucks.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
3rd base, good enough.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Figures – our pitcher is the only one who can hit this guy.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
now that’s just not right-pitcher gets the first hit.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Wow…of course it was Hamels who got the 1st hit.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Wow is he serious with that 3-0 strike call.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Rarity… baserunners.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
This game is awful and Hamels sucks. He needs to pitch a shutout and he’s letting the team down. Now he’s hitting singles when he needs to be hitting home runs. He should be demoted after this game so Adam Eaton can be in the big leagues where he belongs!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Sitting on hold now…Their hold music is awful
August 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
I kind of get the impression that the rest of the team isn’t too fond of Cole. Didn’t he make some comment about the team in spring training? Or maybe it’s his hot but wacky wife.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
ADam eaton is sporting a fashionable 10 ER in Single A. I would enjoy if that prospect Tim profiled today, is listed higher in the rotation then Eaton
August 7th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Great clutch hitting.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I’m not going to get on Vic’s case at all for that. He’s been carrying this team.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Cole has every right to be angry at this team. He has lost 2 games when he has given up only one run
August 7th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
haha it’s Scot with 1 T.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Never fear…the Mets bullpen is blowing the game for Santana as we speak
August 7th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
georgie, i think you’re getting cole confused with brett myers, and cole’s wife with anna benson.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Phil, you’re obsessed with the Mets. You’re here every day reporting scores back and forth. Worry about your own team you homo.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Does SV not understand the concept of hitting down on the ball? He’s got homerun on his mind.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I think they don’t like him because he has a better B.A. than most of them.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Aw, did I offend you for posting the Mets score?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
No-Cole is married to that blonde chick from Survivor, isn’t he? I believe they were on DNL and she wants to adopt African kids, buy land in Africa in their names, and start a reserve or something-google it!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
why do the friggin gameday things always freeze. garbage programming
August 7th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Mr Met is just angry that his team is about to cough up the lead. If we reported a Met score in which they took the lead he’d be all peaches and cream.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Wheeler is such a know-it-all.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
a reserve of what? wildlife or kids
August 7th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Cole’s spouse is Heidi Strobel. I tried to post her wikipedia page but it didn’t work.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
it need to be harry – sarge, t-mac – sarge, harry – sarge.
wheeler has gotta go. i dont like baseball booth rotations. 3 guys is enough.
if youre going to force wheeler on us: harry – wheeler, t-mac sarge, harry – sarge
August 7th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
uis there some delay?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
FUCK!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Geoff-I’m not really sure, I didn’t see the show-lol!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Well at least the Pads cut the lead in half. They’ll get at least 1 in the 9th.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
hopefully a reserve of relief pitchers
August 7th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
I told you Hamels sucks! He needs to go!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
i can’t stand wheeler. he’s painful to listen to.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Rick-ROTFL!!!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
There we go Chase, please lets get something done here.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
WTF!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
You gotta be kidding me.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Ugh. Why oh why do the Marlins play better D against us? They are so bad at defense.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
A hell of a catch
August 7th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
If they leave Hamels in they are fools.
His health is already in question.
I have nothing to say about our power hitters.
I have not been listening or watching, because I have to work for a living.
I can only say we have given up more scoreless innings than I thought we ever would.
I am done ranting.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
looks like a catch our boy Rowand would make-oh, wait, that’s right, we let him go.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Doesn’t Wheeler ever shut up?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
No, he loves the sound of his own voice.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Anyone think Dobbs should pinch hit here for Bruntlett, or is he better saved for later?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
wtf was Bruntlett swinging at? This offense makes me sick.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
No. There was a lefty in the pen. Don’t waste him this early.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Georgie, get over it, I dont know who’s gonna complain more, half of this site over Rowand or Packers fans over Favre. I’m a Packers fan by the way and won’t complain at all because unlike a four year old, I know that complaining about it wont make it better, just builds excuses.
And there are the Marlins we know out in left field, terrible play on that ball hit by Jenkins.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
oh, crap, I have to leave for a hairdresser appt, a pitfall of being a girl!! Wonder if they would tune the radio to the Phils game? NOT!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
When will the Cole bashing start?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Why save Dobbs? We’re already down 2-0. That would have been a perfect time for him to pinch hit- man in scoring position. I guess Charlie’s right – leave Bruntlett in to bobble a few more balls.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Really, Hamels should be winning more of these games when the offense doesn’t score any runs.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
look at the mets bullpen, now its 3-2 with bases loaded
August 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
The Mets bullpen is such trash. hahahahahaha
August 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Jody Gerut!
August 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Geoff, that’s old news.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Hahaha Pads tied it in the 9th. It’s like god damn clockwork.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Mets bullpen just blew it – Jody Gerut HR to tie it at 3.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
my thing is slow.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Now they’re bringing in Heilman. They’re trying to lose at this point.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
and, as predicted, the Mets bullpen blew it. just like clockwork.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
every tim ei see heilman on baseball tonight he is in the process of giving up a homerun. yes, what a garbage bullpen.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Kyle, was that a serious comment or a joke? How can a pitcher win a game when the offense scores 0 runs?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
haha 1 ball and no strikes. Harry is senile.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Wow, that is bad. Contrary to popular belief, the Mets are no threat if they can’t hold a lead for two innings.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
why do the mets even bother having a bullpen if all they’re going to do is blow leads? they might as well go with 6 or 7 starters, let them all throw complete games, and fill out the rest of their roster with position players.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
wtf Howard. Your defense is worse than the Mets bullpen.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
This is a lot of pitches for someone who is “injured”
August 7th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
This game is beginning to get as frustrating at the first game of the series.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Why can Howard never make that throw? It fucking pisses me off.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
And that is why Albert doesn’t deserve Pujols money…I can’t believe he thinks he is better than Pujols. Is he dumb?
August 7th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Oh no – it’s 2 run Madson. Nice catch Bruntlett, nice throw Howard.
August 7th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
NEPA, it was a joke. As phil has pointed out a couple of weeks back some guy was trashing Cole for losing a 2-1 game to the Marlins in Florida.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
God, we suck
August 7th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Hamels goes down due to over pitching someone already injured possibly, you can kiss the playoffs goodbye.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I meant Ryan haha
August 7th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
well, i will give espn credit, their gamecast is the most realtime so far and screws up less.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Hamels is a bum! If he didn’t allow so many runners on base Ryan Howard wouldn’t be making throwing errors! Blame Hamels!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I guess if hamels goes down happ plugs the gap until they waiver-trade for some junk out there like bronson arroyo. thats such a shorrifying thought.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
My work computer is so crappy that if I go to another screen and go back to the game it is UPSIDE DOWN for a minute or two.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
ugh…this fucking sucks. Good job losing this game for us Howard. You fucking douchebag. You better hit a 3 run home run to get this back.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
blown right open.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Ryan Howard is the worst player in the field in baseball. Really, I don’t think it’s close. He is just an awful player out there. I mean he can mash, but I would seriously consider moving him in the offseason.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Cole pitched great, are you kidding? Struck out seven in 6.1 and the defense did shit to help him. He gave up some hits but they were scattered until this defenseless inning. That run should have never scored, Bruntlett is making up for a great game defensively last night with that bobble.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
That ball was not hit that deep, could the reason for the the no throw to home for the force be because Rollins struts when going for the ball, almost as though he is worried about appearance rather than effectiveness.
I could and probably am wrong.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Yeah, there is no way that the Phillies garbage offense is coming back from this.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Hamels should know the offense isn’t going to score for him so he should be throwing shutouts every start! I don’t care if he only gave up 2 runs…2 runs it too much! He’s a bum and bring up Eaton!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
With my computer upside down, maybe the play did not go to Rollins afterall.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
youre correct joe. jimmy rollins has become a worse version of willie mays hays
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Can someone who was watching the game describe Howard’s error?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
mets walked-off. as usual, the phils will lose a late season series against pittsburgh, and this nl east lead will vanish come monday.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Nah Mr. Durbin. He looked at home. It was really his only play.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
“Ryan Howard is the worst player in the field in baseball. Really, I don’t think it’s close. He is just an awful player out there. I mean he can mash, but I would seriously consider moving him in the offseason.”
Haha what are you crazy? That would be too smart. The Phillies will just let him play untill his contract runs out and not resign him.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
“mets walked-off. as usual, the phils will lose a late season series against pittsburgh, and this nl east lead will vanish come monday.”
Jesus Christ relax. They are down by three going into the 7th. Get a grip, it isn’t the end of the world.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Best of luck with the rest of the game. I have to earn my living now.
I enjoy reading the blogs.
You are my only friends!!!!
I keep forgetting that humor can be misunderstood on a blog.
Have a great day!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
It’s only a matter of time before the Mets fans start clogging up this blog. I can already hear the approaching hoofbeats.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
and the draf tpicks they get when howard walks, two first rounders probably, guess who will be making them? they wont even let amaro make them. THEY WILL FLY IN ED WADE JUST FOR THAT. because wade wotn be a GM for anyone by then.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Yo,
I just read through a few of the comments fromm earlier, what in the world was up with that jj23 guy’s comments. I was actually disturbed by some of the things he was asking. Something about his fiancee and shes a big baseball guy. Then about if any Phillies are REALLY close!! That was just creepy man. Anyway, any word on if the Mets were blowing their lead in the ninth again?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I don’t see them losing to Ian “Version 2.0 of Adam Eaton” Snell on Saturday.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Kyle, ball hit right to him past first base and being a lefty, Howard threw the ball high and left of the bag as to where J-Roll had to jump about a two feet off the base just to catch it and then tried to apply a tag but the runner was safe, barely. Oh yea, easy double play ball.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
lol, he brings in Dobbs now… Manual is such a moron
August 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Dobbs and Burrell dont even look like they are looking at the ball when they swing sometimes.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Not a bad game by Hamels, but as usual the offense falls asleep when he pitches…BTW if Burrell isn’t re-signed during the offseason, they seriouslly need to convert Howard into an out fielder because he’s just flat out horrible at 1B.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Howard: 14 errors. Next closest first baseman: 9. He is a joke.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
ian snell is better than adam eaton. he will beat the phillies on saturday. brett myers will get rocked by the pirates. if the phillies face karstens over the weekend, liek sunday, theyll lost to him too. the pirates always beat them in a series down the stretch.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
“they seriouslly need to convert Howard into an out fielder because he’s just flat out horrible at 1B”
J-Man, dumbest comment ever. Congrats
August 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
j roll should GIDP.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
The Phillies will probably sweep the Pirates. I just can’t see them not doing that. I just want the Mets and Fish to beat up on eachother bad. Doesn’t matter who wins really. Way to go Jimmy…
August 7th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Good call, Geoff.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
D Wright walk off two-run homerun! Marlins 3 – Phillies 0. What a great day! Fuck you Phillie scumbags, haha!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Did Ruiz even get halfway down the line? How slow is that guy?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Another home run for Manny by the way. haha wow he’s on a tear in LA
August 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
once again hamels gets outpitched.
good lord is this getting old.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
j-roll has become trash that can be thrown away. put him on waivers, get him out of here. mr. “im too talented to try hard.” asshole, get out of our city.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
There he is. I guess it’s never the offenses fault?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
because hamels is NOT, repeat, NOT an ace. he will be in a few years. but not now. hes a number 2 now. we do not have an ace.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
OK! Now as a Fan and not the Dad!
Our pitching has not been that bad when you only give up a couple.
Our hitting if it does not turn around is going to kill the season.
Power is great, but it appears as though if a pitcher has anything we cannot hit him.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I know Rollins is brutal this year, but Howard just kills me. If there is one thing in the game you can actually improve in a workman like way it’s your defense. And he is absolutely awful. He’s actually getting worse. At the next ARB hearing if I were the Phils I would bring in tapes of his defense and just hit play. Any more questions your honor?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
haha good one Kyle.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
TJ:I’m guessing you like howard and his 14 errors at 1B?Fucking Retard.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Why did Cole Hamels make Rollins GIDP? Stuff like that shows how terrible he really is.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
the pitching, at this stage since there are no more CC’s out there, all the phils need is a hard thowing guy who can do an inning to give madson, lidge, and chad durbin a rest so theyre not overused. theyre not getting another starter unless they know hamels is injured and they-waiver trade for paul byrd.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I am serious about this. If I were the attorney being paid by the Phillies I would directly ask Howard, “Have you ever made a throw to second base that didn’t end up badly for your team?”
August 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Ryan Howard needs to be a DH. The Phillies can’t have a DH so trade him to the Red Sox and get 14 pitchers for him. Some can be sent to Heidi’s relief pitcher reserve in Africa.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
I’m surprised Howard caught that ball.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
We can always count on the highly intelligent Mets fans to demonstrate their excellent command of the English language. Last I checked the Mets were 2 games back of the Phils.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
ill take lester, pedroia, bucholz, and ellsbury for howard and rollins. \
NO CHANCE the red sox would even entertain that idea though.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I can’t believe you’re going to say Hamels is terrible. Are you a fucking retard? No, maybe he’s not an ace, but terrible. You’re a fucking douchebag, seriously.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
although, when david ortiz is done, which might be sooner than we think, they WILL go and get ryan howard from us.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
hamels is NOT terrible. hes a number two being relied upon as an ace, but hes not reayd yet.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
I can’t figure out which Scot hates Hamels and which one has the hilarious posts like the one about Hamels making Rollins GIDP. Great stuff.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
The 1 with 1 T. The one with 2 T’s is just being sarcastic. The 1 with 1 T is a fucking asshole.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
YEAH VIC! I guarantee he doesn’t score.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
The comment about Hamels was from me. I thought the implication that Hamels used his ESP to make Rollins GIDP would have given away the snark.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Oh, okay. haha
August 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Ground out, strike out, fly out.
He’s due for a hit.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Phil you’re right. I see a leadoff double wasted.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Wow, I can’t believe how many moronic comments in here are being posted.
Hamels not an anc? lol
August 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
i think theyll get shane in, maybe howard or burrell homers. the rest of it will be left up to the 9th and the bottom of the order
August 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
wasn’t charlie a hitting coach in cleveland before he was the manager?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
are they trying to not score runs for hamels? i mean this is just getting ridiculous. if cole got kendrick’s run support he’d probably be 15-2 at this point. this is brutal
August 7th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Jesus, is Wes Helms crazy or something.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Hmm… Helms must have hated it here. He wouldn’t have ever done that in a Phillies uniform.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
What did Helms do?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Its so hard for me to understand how they can put up such a solid all around effort last night then come out and totally stink up the place today. It just does not compute.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
We better take 2of3 from the Bucs. If we lose that series, then we can talk. Losing to the Fish isn’t the end of the world. They’re a solid club.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
The Phillies got Scott Eyre for some minor leaguer schlitter or something like that. Just heard it on the WPHT broadcast.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Phillies picked up Scott Eyre for Brian Schlitter…FYI
August 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
“The Phillies got Scott Eyre …”
World Series here we come!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
J-Man Says:
August 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
TJ:I’m guessing you like howard and his 14 errors at 1B?Fucking Retard.
J-Man, take it easy. Just because your wrong for saying that Howard would be a better OF than 1B you dont get to get defensive. What makes you think that Howard can be a solid outfielder if he’s barely cutting it as a 1B? Seriously, riddle me that. The dude is 250lbs and can’t run for shit, there’s no way in hell he can be an OF. Your just a jackass.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
pat walks. ok come on now jenkins, show you belong in the major leagues still.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Scott Eyre is a Phillie
http://sportscomplex.blogs.citypaper.net/blogs/mu/2008/08/07/scott-eyre-is-a-phillie/
August 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
They already tried Howard in the OF back at Reading. Needless to say, it wasn’t successful.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
actually eyre was good down the stretch last year for the cubs. but terrible and injured this year.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
This game is making me cranky.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Seriously, to the person who suggested moving Howard to the OF — stop posting.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Yeah, 7.15 ERA, Scott Eyre. Good luck!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Mr Met.
Your team sucks. You have a horrible bullpenn. You barely managed to take the series from one of the worse teams in the league at home. You are trailing in the division.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
5-3.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
7.15. Isn’t that Billy Wagner’s ERA?
Just kidding, Mr. Met. That’s probably the ERA of your team’s setup man.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
and jenkins doesnt belong…trash
August 7th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Not even close!
Geoff Jenkins, Scott Eyre, Carlos Ruiz
August 7th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I told everyone Gillick had a blockbuster up his sleeve.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
I feel a comeback. If Bruntlett–Ruiz–Dobbs doesn’t get it done, we have .260 Rollins ready to save the game.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
don’t give mr met the attention, not worth it
August 7th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
i dont like his 2007 numbers. nor his number this year. who knows, well see what happens. but they need a SET – UP – MAN. not ANOTHER loogy. what are they thinking? they know tom gordon is done.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Wow, you know you are one big loser when you have nothing better to do than post on another teams forum.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Mr Met, your team ERA after the seventh is 4.26. Nice. The Royals and Pirates top that.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Cancel, Evans, Reyes, Murphy, Kunz, Castro, Schoenweis!
August 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
which of bruntlett ruiz dobbs is going to get on base? maybe jimmy can walk and leave it up to chase.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I think Bruntlett will BB, Ruiz GIDP, Dobbs single.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
i called that one too. as soon as eyre got DFA, i said: the phillies are going to be all over that trash..
August 7th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
5-3? There goes another Mets fan bragging about his IQ.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
how many blown saves does gregg have?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
not many, geoff
August 7th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Geoff and Mike T, Gregg has six.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
The Phillies could trade Howard to the Angels, with him being their designated hitter, and pick up Chone Figgins in return – a speedy player who can make this offense more productive – and perhaps some prospects. Burrell could be resigned for two or three more years and play first base. While he would be no defensive wizard, he would be better than what we saw today.
Again, the taking of fastballs has done them in today. They have faced good pitching, but for how much longer can that be an excuse? Manuel, Thompson and everybody else need to conjure up a more innovative offensive style before they get run out of town.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Haha, does anyone else hear the one guy in the stands just yelling HEEEYYYYYYYY! real loud over and over again?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
The fella the Phillies gave up for Eyre has decent numbers. They need a strong farm, not a weak goat.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Sorry, NEPA, my game is on mute. I’m “working”
August 7th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Wow, not even close. Nice try by Utley though.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
trade howard for chone figgins??!!!??? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Even Ed Wade wouldn’t be dumb enough to pull that one. haha. that’s un-freaking-believable.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Actually, I do not want to come down too hard on Eyre. He might be alright. But “loogies” are no help to a team whose hitting is hit or miss. And by the way, I don’t see the Marlins play this way against many other teams. What’s up with that?
August 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
aww man. so its like mike cervenak or so taguchi leading off here? damnit
August 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Alright, Ryan, I take it back.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
The Marlins are a good club. They play this way against a lot of teams.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Not even close at home I mean, good throw by Jenkins, Utley made an almost amazing play in the field.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
well three runs is too much for this garbage at the bottom of the order.
August 7th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Kyle, you are probably right. Not many teams can split series at Wrigley this year.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Which do i hate more: watching ruiz hit or howard field? I smell a survey!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
stop giving the marlins credit….the truth is the phillies just arent that good
August 7th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
I knew it, rollins will come through with a grounder to second here!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
someone forgot to tell dobbs that they need 3 runs and not 1
August 7th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Phillies grounded out 15 times..
August 7th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Ya, the Marlins, will all that young talent: Hanley, Uggla, Jacobs, Sanchez, Johnson, Nolasco. It’s a pretty awful group of talented under 30 players. They suck, everyone sucks! Boo hoo!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
hahahahahahahahaha. thais team is PATHETIC.
two shutouts in one series to the marlins. hitting coach should be IMMEDIATELY let go.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Only 7 runs scored for the entire 3 game series? WEAK!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
The Marlins are only .017 percentage points behind the Phils. If the Marlins stink, what does that say about the Phils? I say the Marlins are a pretty good team.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Now they’ll score 20 in the next three games.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
that game sukked
August 7th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
the whole NL East sucks…
August 7th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I say this game is yet another perfect example of how the starters have been one of the most consistent aspects of the Phillies squad and get spoiled by a horrendously inconsistent offense. 86-76 anyone?
August 7th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Evans, Kunz and Murphy all rookies who are succeeding in the Majors.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
At least the owners keep selling out CBP though! We should be happy for them!!!!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Mr. Met, they will have, say it with me: 0 collective all-star appearances. If you like 2 Willie Bloomquists and poor-man’s Aaron Heilman, then you will be satisfied. If you want, you know, good players, you’re going to be disappointed.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I am really surprised Cleveland didnt jump at the Kunz-Evans-Murphy for CC trade. Those prospects are HOT!
August 7th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
i wouldn’t say the NL east sucks. look at the central and they have three good teams, but their records are tremendously inflated by playing the reds, bucs, and astros 18 times a year each.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Can anyone really argue that Hamels wasn’t outpitched today? I mean seriously? Look at Voltron or whatever the hell his name is numbers vs Hamels.
Hamels just didn’t get it done. Again. In a big game, against a playoff rival.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Not so sure it’s the owners to blame. The way the limited partnership is set up it gives complete control to Montgomery. It is also not possible for them to remove Montgomery from his position. He was very smart when he helped put this ownership group together.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Sure Geoff, firing Milt Thompson is the answer.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Scot, it is terribly difficult to win games 0-0.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Milt teaches these guys what to do at the plate but what happens when they dont apply it at the plate? Its like a good teacher teaching a class that fails to do well on quizzes, do you fire the teacher, or is it the kids fault?
August 7th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
In addition, they (the owners) have no say as to the day-to-day operations such as which players to sign or deal for. About the only time they can get involved is when/if Montgomery approaches them for a cash call. To the best of my knowledge, every time they have been approached for cash, they have complied. Blame Montgomery if you want but the owners are truly silent partners.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
The thing these guys never do is just throw the bat out there and at least get some wood on the ball and put it in play. Too many strikeouts, too many fastballs being taken right down the middle, poor situational hitting. These guys are making opposing pitchers look brilliant when they are as mediocre as it gets. Granted Voltron did have a decent ERA. . .
August 7th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Kyle, I’ve seen it done.. haha. I really haven’t. Hamels didnt get outpitched, Hamels threw more strikes to pitches than Volstad. Our offense is so freeswinging that it will chase anything, like Joe Morgan puts it, in their “hit zone”, not the strike zone, “hit zone”, and some of these guys have so much coinfidence that they think that they can hit anything. Especially Howard. How do you pitch to Howard? Low and away all day.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Good pitching beats good hitting.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Kyle,
It’s also difficult to win games when you can’t slam the door and give up 2 out RBI’s on three seprate occasions like Hamels today. A more mature ace slams the door in those situations thus putting his team in a position to win. Few things are more demoralizing to teams than giving up the 2 out rbi. Hamels is a demoralizer.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
montgomery is against paying players market value. this is in line with what bud selig wants because he is trying to drive down player salaries.
now, im ok with lowering player salaries, but only if its an agreement between the union and the league. (no chance = lockout)
but, when the acting head of the clubs ownership group is against it, that means they dont want to get good players, quite simply. that means theyre going to suck before too long….again
the solution is they need competence in there who KNOWS you have to spend more, does ACTUALLY go and do it, AND knows who to get.

Rick, 2.67 ERA is good, not decent haha give credit where it is due..
August 7th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
good hitting can at least annoy good pitching. get on base and make them throw more pitches by working counts so taht you have to turn to the bullpen slop earlier than desired.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
TJ,
You’re telling me that the pitcher who allowed more hits, more baserunners, more extra base hits, and three more runs was the better pitcher today because he threw 12 more strikes over six innings?
Good point.
Hamels was outpitched by Voltron. Fact.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Montgomery gets 10% of the net profits – that’s his salary. More net profit = more salary to Montgomery. Keeping the payroll under control and filling the ballpark maximizes his salary potential.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
thats guys name is voltron from now on
August 7th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
that will be appropriately accredited as his nickname
August 7th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Hamels wasnt outperformed, the guys at the plate were. Our “explosive” offense looked at 20 of Volstad’s strikes.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
David Montgomery is to blame, and unfortunately he will continue to rake in the cash while fans leave disappointed.
I am leaning with this team jsut not being that good. A good team is consistent in all aspects, and this offense is far from being consistent. Someone said two weeks ago that if you took away the blowout wins(wins by more then 10). Then this team would have a run advantage eqaul to the D-Backs and Royals.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I was so excited when I heard this team might be for sale
August 7th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
victorino should lead off. they need to drop rollins. move Pat in the clean-up spot. drop howard down. get rid of jenkins and start werth. send ruiz down and bring up the prospect. release so taguchi. and ask the giants nicely for Rowand back cause he was the heart of the team apparently
August 7th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
You’re right TJ, our explosive offense are the guys who gave up the 2 out rbi’s instead of slamming the door.
awesome.
August 7th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
What an ugly, non-existent offensive effort that was! They couldn’t even touch that jive turkey Arthur Rhodes. Hamels deserved better for his performance in this one.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
let me guess charlie…”they just ran into good pitching today”…once again a no-name looks like a cy young against this swing-for-the-fenses offense.
and scott, i agree that hamels doesnt look like cc sabathia right now but with his numbers (3.6 era & 1.06 whip) he should not be 9-8. period. offense gives him nothing to work with.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
to that dude JJ233223 ..
Victorino and Kendrick have an apartment together.. if that’s what you mean.
August 7th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
They had 4 hits today…. Hamels had the first one!!! They suck.. they battled a couple times, with some nice at bats, but never hit the ball hard. TERRIBLE game to be at… be glad you didn’t go
August 7th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Scot, It’s not Hamels vs. Voltron. It’s Hamels vs Marlins and Voltron vs. Phillies. Comparing them is apples and oranges. Dont blame Hamels for having a quality start when our horrendously inconsistent offense scores a wopping goose-egg.
August 7th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
anybody putting any blame on hamels in today’s game is a complete fucking moron. anybody who says hamels isn’t an ace is a complete fucking moron. you can’t win a game when your team doesn’t score a single goddamned run! fact. the phillies lineup didn’t even get a hit until the 5 inning, AND THAT WAS BY COLE HAMELS! Bob Gibson, or steve carlton, or nolan ryan, or a juiced up roger clemens could not have won a game for the phillies today.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Ryan, you can’t argue with Scot. That guy is the biggest douchebag that posts on this board. I seriously think he is a Mets fan with the shit talking he does on Hamels. God himself couldn’t have beat the Marlins today because you know…the Phillies can’t score runs. He refuses to ever put blame on the Phillies offense for a loss. I explained it to him like this once. A pitcher could go 0-34 in a season with a 1.0 ERA. He could let up 1 run a game and throw 9 innings every single game but the offense not score 1 run for you, and he said then that would be a bad pitcher. The guy is on crack or a Mets fan. I asked him if Sabathia or Sheets weren’t an ace because they got beat by the Cubs, but he didn’t answer the question. If Zambrano lost that game to Sheets he is not an ace? One of them need to lose, right? Isn’t that how baseball works? Is the one that loss a shitty pitcher? Oh yeah, Hamels beat Webb earlier this season…I guess that means Webb sucks ass, right?
August 7th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Haha. I was wondering how long it would take for the Cole bashing to begin.
Scot, it’s difficult to understand how Hamels gave up “3 two out RBIs” when he only gave up 2 earned runs, and the third scored when he wasn’t even in the game.
Maybe a little of that “fuzzy Cole math” is going on in your logic.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Cole could have a 27 strike out game with 28 batters with 88 pitches thrown 88 for strikes, but just one pitch be a 1 run home run and the Phils lost because their offense couldn’t score runs, and he’d still trash Hamels. The guy is a fucking douchebag.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
This ‘powerhouse’ lineup has got to able to score more than 7 runs in a series. It we can’t get more consistent hitting it’s going to be a long couple of months ahead.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Agreed. They need to start winning games for Hamels so Scot shuts the fuck up.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Scot wants his pitchers to have a nice record. Who cares about important stats like whip, Ks, ERA, innings pitched. It’s all about the W-L. Fuck guys like Santana and Hamels, who are a couple of games over .500 combined. I’d much rather run out Adam Eaton, who sported an 11-8 record last year. Whomever has the better record, that is the *real* ace.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Obviously our ace is Kyle Kendrick. He has more wins.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Kendrick pitched a better game last night against the same team that Hamels lost to. Fact.
Hamels hasn’t won a game in over a month. Fact.
All the great WHIP in the world doesn’t mean a damn if you give up homeruns and 2 out RBI’s that cost your team the game. Fact.
August 7th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
You’re a douchebag. fact
August 7th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Kendrick had run support last night. Fact
Kendrick has run support every time he pitches. Fact
Hamels never has run support. Fact
Hamels is a MUCH better pitcher than Kendrik. Fact
You are dumb. Fact
August 7th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Phil, sweeheart, if I was a Mets fan I wouldn’t be spending hundreds of dollars a month to drive down from CT to see this team several times a month.
I’ve blamed the offense several times. I’m frustrated as hell with Utley, Rollins, and I said even several months ago jenkins is Gillicks worst signing.
I’m even more frustrated than you. I just don’t build up blameless demigods who can be excused from sub par performances.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Kendrick had some great defensive plays that saved his ass last night. Fact
Hamels had his defense making bad plays. Fact
The Phillies offense didn’t get a hit for the 1st 5 innings. Fact
Cole Hamels got the 1st hit. Fact
It’s hard to pitch in pressure situations like that. Fact
I could go on.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
If Hamels had a 15-4 record right now would you be arguing this?
August 7th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
If Hamels had a 15-4 record that would mean he has cut down on the homeruns and 2 out rbi’s. I’d be thrilled as a Phils season ticket holder. I hope he still can get to that point, but he hasn’t done the business this year.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Hamels had a decent game I thought. Unfortunately, nobody else in a Phillies uniform did.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Hamels should have a 15-4 record. He is I believe 127th in the league in run support. I’m sure it’s lower now after today’s game. If Eaton had a 19-4 record right now with a 7.00 ERA but got 9 runs a game support would that make him better than Hamels? See, this is what makes you a fucking moron. Hamels can’t help his lack of run support.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
You never answered my question though. Hamels beat Webb a few weeks ago. Does that make Webb garbage? Zambrano beat Sheets does that make Sheets garbage. You are the biggest homer on this site. Anyone who judges w/l for how good a pitcher is is fucking dumb. Nolan Ryan has one of the most horrible w % for a HOF pitcher. I guess he blows too, right?
August 7th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
i’m employed phil, sorry if that cuts into our q&a time. i’ll try to do better in the future.
zambrano beat sheets.
volton and pinero beat hamels.
look i am not saying hamels is garbage. i will say he definitely has not pitched well enough to be 15-4. it’s simple. you can twist your stats all you want, but even hamels would say he hasn’t pitched well enough to be 15-4. only fanboys would suggest that.
You want to drink kool aid and say hamels is blameless. i want to look at our ace and be confident that he can win close games when our offense isn’t at it’s best.
you want to defend your hero. i want to look at facts.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Let me put it this way Phil. It’s as if you are looking at a Hamels strat-o-matic card. That’s great. I love strat. I’m in a strat league. I’m in 3rd in my division. But the game isn’t played by rolls of dice and mathematical formulas. It’s played on the field. I agree that Hamels has pitched very well, statistically. It’s great stuff on paper.
But the game is played on the field. With real players, real human frailaities, and real emotions. Not calculators and long division. And when all that has come into play, Hamels has come up a little bit short. He has not risen to the occasion in close games. You can have a billion formulas. It doesn’t take into account a pitchers “head” after he gives up a leadoff double. Or when he has a guy on second two outs and he hasn’t got the call he wanted the pitch before.
Unfortunately, that seems to be where Hamels has fallen short this year. He can get better at that, he’s not even 25 yet. I hope he does.
I call it as I see it. You call me a douchebag, and a Mets fan. Fair play, if ya say so. But that is the sad truth of this season.
August 7th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
In 1968, Bob Gibson started 34 games with 28 complete games. He won 22 with an amazing ERA of 1.12 . Somehow he still lost 9 games.
What does this prove? Maybe nothing but I’d be willing to bet he didn’t get much run support in those 9 losses.
August 7th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Gotta love phillies fan!!
August 7th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
I’m done arguing with you. You are too incompetent to get my point. You argued that he pitched bad the 1st game this season. You know the one where he let up 1 run on 2 hits. The Phillies had 1 hit that game. So, it’s Hamels fault they lost? You judge w/l too much. The Phillies offense beat Hamels. That’s what it all boils down to. I love the posts where you say he’s terrible.
August 7th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
This is arguing? No, Phil. You’ve just presented your side of the story over and over again and never put any blame on Hamels. I’ve admitted the offense is been sub par. You’ve said when Hamels lets up a go ahead home run it’s the offense’s fault.
Believe me, Phil, there is enough blame to go to Hamels as well for SEVERAL of his starts this year. But you say the Phillies offense beat Hamels, which is, of course, a statistical impossibility in the game of baseball when they are on the same team. You of all people should know that.
