Gameday: Phillies (73-61) At Cubs (84-50)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, August 29, 2008 01:41 PM
Headline: Former teammates face off for different teams
The Major Players: Joe Blanton, Rich Harden, JC Romero, Shane Victorino
The Venue: Wrigley Field, Chicago
The Number: 1 game behind (Mets)
Yesterday sucked. The Phillies carried a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning but lost to the Cubs, 6-4. Today Joe Blanton faces former teammate Rich Harden, who has been almost unhittable since joining Chicago.
History Lesson: Earlier in the season, Harden beat the Phillies without barely doing much work. He gave up just two hits, both to Shane Victorino. The Flyin’ Hawaiian will need to “do work” today..
Blantonator: Blanton has a 3.00 ERA in his last five starts. Sunday he pitched pretty well against the Dodgers, en route to a victory over the Blue.
Not The Light!: The Phillies are 16-21 in daytime.
Revert: Charlie Manuel is back to the old lineup, with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hitting three and four and Victorino in the two-hole.
Phillies: Joe Blanton (6-12) 4.75 ERA
Cubs: Rich Harden (9-2) 2.00 ERA
Gametime: 2:20 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Werth/Dobbs/Ruiz/Blanton

Your gameday beer: The Surly Brewing Company presents CynicAle. And why not? I’m pretty cynical about this teamoing into today’s game. Harden sports a 2.00 ERA. I mean, 2.00! And the Phils are not a good daytime team. Add that to recent bullpen woes, and this isn’t a recipe for victory. One can only hope, though! Oh, enjoy this with a chicken pesto and mozarella sandwich.
Go Phillies!

Home

August 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Good luck vs Da Cubs……..looking forward to a good game on the XM with those homers Pat Hughes and Ron Santo.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
What do you think of the Phillies trading for Matt Stairs? He is 40 but could still be able to contribute. Maybe moving to a team that is in contention will put a spring in his step and give us the left handed bat we need off the bench!
Trying to stay optimistic!

August 29th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
There’s a thread about it right below this one. I personally think it’s nice to have an added bat off the bench, especially if he came cheap enough. Still, the righty bats off the bench are Coste/Ruiz, Bruntlett and Taguchi. Not good enough, IMO.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I completely agree. No right handers. What about bullpen help as well? Don’t we need that more?
I just hope today that Blanton can give us at least 7 strong or we may face the exact same fate. Without another quality arm in the pen, September is going to be tough!
http://phightinphils.com
August 29th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
theyll need an experienced arm i think. right handed late inning releiver. older. cheap, rental.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Hey fellow phillies fans: those cub fans were booing rollins better then we were. Next homestand we gotta show them whose boss. noone out-boos us
August 29th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
why were they booing him
August 29th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
how come harry said this game is in hd and the graphic is are in hd but the picture isnt
August 29th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Harden is due to get blown up at some point, and I think this is the game… Just kidding, 8-1 Cubs and Harden barely breaks a sweat. Hopefully the Fish come through for us tonight and we can steal tomorrow or Sunday’s game.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
charlie should pull a joe torre and use a starter whos throw day it is and use them for a inning
August 29th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Stairs is a great pick up. His OPS is over .600 vs lefties.. that’s better than Jenkins .225 (!)
August 29th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Deja Vu from last night? 2 out Base Hit to score the first one in the first inning.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
PAT BURRELL!
August 29th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
blanton goes for a complete game today
August 29th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
My tv has this game in hd
August 29th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
my tv has it in widescreen
August 29th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
blanton is throwing like the strike zone is in wide screen
August 29th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Hey Tim–where did you find CynicAle in Philly? I’d like to try it.
And hey, first blood. Woohoo!
August 29th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
That was me booing Rollins for swinging at the first pich of the game.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
blanton is corey lidle
August 29th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
finally hd
August 29th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
What is the deal with J-Hole, first pitch swinging against a guy who doesn’t give up hits, but will walk some folks? Damn dude. I agree Brian. That’s boo worthy, big time.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Nice AB Ruiz.. I’m nearly going to miss you next year.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
With a runner at second and 2 outs, I’m 100% okay at swinging at the first pitch.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
hey a walk for j-hole new change
August 29th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
It’s interesting how CBP has a park factor of 1.003 (with 1.000 being neutral) which ranks in the lower half in the majors. in ‘07 it was 14th, in ‘06 it was 8th. So clearly it has become a park that does not really favor hitters.
I guess we can expect the ESPN crew to catch on in about 3 years..
August 29th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Here comes Rich Harden, oh crap. Come on Joey-B, keep throwing that sweet chin music!
August 29th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Feliz is not in the lineup today and looked like he was going through the motions last night at the plate, does anybody know what’s up with him?
August 29th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Sarge is singing “Take me out to the ballgame” during today’s 7th inning stretch.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
yeah i cant wait to see that
August 29th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Just tuned in, did I miss any notes aside from the Burrell single?
August 29th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Great hustle by Utley there as well, and that was a rope by Howard. Howard didnt do anything but try to get back to the base.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
What helped sell that for Howard was that his back was to the throw the whole time.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
is it me or does the pic on top the person with the bag over their face is creepy?
August 29th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Derosa was out. Bad call.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Wow he was out, blown call by the 2nd base ump. Now this.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
If we traded Castro for Stairs Ill be pretty upset with that deal.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
What a way to give up an unearned run.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Oh my fucking god J-Roll, no need to fuckin rush that.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
pardon my language but that was extremely bad, like little league bad.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Boo Jimmy Boo.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
What happened?
August 29th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
We need more runs. Blanton’s luck won’t last much longer.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Blanton is pitching well, too. Botched call with Jimmy’s error gift wrapped that run for the Cubs, which makes me uneasy against this Cubs team.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
NEPA, Jimmy overthrew Ryan Howard on a routine 4, 6, 3 double play, allowing a run to score.
The run that scored was a deadduck out on a stolen base that the umpire missed the call.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
if they gave up castro for stairs then they better make that old man play out his contract and get an extra year out of him. its a bad free agent year for outfielders. unless hes going to be backup at first base next season.
but its all ok as long as they trade jimmy rollins.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
NEPA - Let me set the scene for you. Man on first (Blanco - not a great runner by any means) and a man on third with one out. Its a grounder to Utley, he flips it to J-Roll at second and gets the out and J-Roll throws it about 2 feet over Howard, mind you he had about another two seconds to get his feet set, allowing the run to score.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
castro was so highly coveted the phillies nixed the holliday/fuesntes deal because they wouldnt give up fabio castro (bullshit, lying bastards) but theyll give him up now for matt stairs.
does that compute with anybody?
August 29th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Nice going, J-Roll. He had better atone for that next at bat.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
they didn’t give up castro! are you guys drunk? he was DFA, they probably traded a single A ball boy.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Jesus Christ what a dumb play. No error because you can’t assume the double play right?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
honestly, the best way jimmy can atone for that is getting waiver-traded or released. just get out of our city.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
actually, watch, il lbet they did give up castro
August 29th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Geoff, doesnt compute with me.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Yeah, I guess it was scored a hit then, becaue the run was considered earned.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Danny - Are you watching AND listening to the game? They said that the buzz is that they gave up Castro.
That GIDP by Ruiz was unexpected. ( Sarcasm )
August 29th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
There’s the Ruiz I know and love.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
SJ Mike - It wasnt considered an error because it was a fielders choice and they had already gotten one out on the live ball.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Of course the run was earned. You can’t assume a double play.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
And it must have been scored a fielder’s choice, not a hit.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Yeah, my first reaction was unearned probably out of sheer frustration on a dumb rushed play.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
they really need to trade jimmy rollins today, pull him, waive him (itll still count) and just see what you get for him.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
i would be totally ok with getting a few PTBNL for him and seeing if they can fit in next year. im completely fine with that.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
No way we win this game today, I just don’t see it.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Geoff - We arent trading Rollins this season, maybe the offseason.
NEPA - Love the optimism.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Carlos Ruiz grounds into a double play again. His poor offense does not justify keeping him around next year for his good handling of pitchers and defense. If he was hitting .250 or higher, it would be a different story.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I loved that Cubs fan screaming at Welke on the close up of Ramirez for the first pitch strike.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I love Jimmy Rollins.
Blanton, we need for than 5+ outta you, today. Bear down.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
This spells bad news.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Ok, if you need to lift Blanton in the 6th, who in the bullpen is permitted/ready/whatever to come in now?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
SJ Mike - he did call that a tad late, I think thats why they got on him. The Cubs are about to jump on Blanton, get him out soon.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
blanton got lucky there
August 29th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
TJ, I’m not disagreeing with the reaction. I just loved the reaction. It was quite humorous to see him screaming and gesturing “low ball.”
August 29th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Condrey I would guess.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Blanton is scheduled to lead off the 7th, right?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Its always a bit entertaining when the crowd reacts to pitches, like that near chin music right there.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Fukudome stinks. Should walk Derosa and bring in Eyre for Fukudome here.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
why not bean derosa and save 3 pitches?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
That was REALLY lucky on that wild pitch there.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Wow, thank god.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Or how the crowd reacts to every mound conference.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
This loss is gonna hurt.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Bring on Fukudome. Good Double switch.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
hardens a guy taht really doesnt seem to be trained to throw many innings. theyre SO scared of him getting injured
August 29th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Coste to catch now I take it?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
SJ Mike - correct. Stays away from the pitchers spot for a while, Coste leads off the seventh in the 9 hole.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Karmically, we gotta get out of this and win this game.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I don’t think I can watch.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I like the double switch, Eyre has been a beast since coming over. He needs to say fuck the Cubs and sit this guy down.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reported the Phillies will send the Blue Jays left-handed minor league pitcher Fabio Castro in return for Stairs. He’s 8-4 with a 4.71 ERA overall this season.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Eyre vs. his old team. Interesting. Get Fukudome out!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
One thing about the Cubs I’ve noticed. They are really disciplined at taking bad pitches. Man are they good at running deep counts.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Damn , it was was Castro - and Eyre’s about to blow this.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Wow- what do you guys think about that?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
they didn’t give up castro! are you guys drunk? he was DFA, they probably traded a single A ball boy.
That was a strike.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Wow. This team just does not have what it takes.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
This is irritating to watch
August 29th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
You only ask one thing from umpires. Consistent strike zone.
Then again, you only ask one thing to pitchers in this situation. DON’T WALK THE BATTER!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
but, they did give up castro, the question is: are they drunk?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
But the damage was done, lets go O!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080829&content_id=3385336&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi
WHY WOULD THEY SEND CASTRO????????????
August 29th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Haha, then 3 straight strikes to Blanco. This team really knows how to irritate the shit out of its fans.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Coste, Rollins, Victorino. Gotta get some baserunners here before Gary Matthews hurts us with his tone deaf singing.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Geoff - I was quoting danny from earlier in the thread.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I’m pretty sure Gillick’s drunk most of the time.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
NOBODY should be surprised here. NOBODY. of COURSE they gave up fabio castro for matt stairs.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
All I hear about on here is how good Castro is and we trade him for an average lefty who’ll get 50 ABs.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
does anyone else think the 2nd to last pitch to Fuku was a strike? Thats why there was all that confusion after ball four. Regardless, we need runs, and I don’t like our chances against Smarzj/Marmol/wood
August 29th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I’m watching the mlb.tv thread, they didn’t say anything about the trade. I stand by what I said though! I’m sorry to offend those of you who are not drunk.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
right, its ok to trade for stairs. for some NOBODY who will NEVER amount to anything.
but, castro could be a decent bullpen arm in the future, why waste him on that?
its like intentional failure…if theyre going to do that then just trade jimmy rollins already.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Fabio Castro isn’t any good, what’s the big deal with trading him?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I really liked Castro too. This is a dumb trade.
Lets get something going here J-Roll. Prove your worth.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
As a Penn State fan, these hitters better tear Jeff Samardzija a new one here.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Good point Geoff!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
psu student right here. i hate samardzija
August 29th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
How much do these announcers love Jose Reyes and Derek Lee?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Actually, the Castro for Stairs trade should encourage drunkenness from the entire fanbase today.
Seriously, what do we know? We’re fanboy-nerds who follow millionaires on a sports blog in our spare time. But for real, how can this trade by reasonable? Can someone just defend it?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Now would be a good time for a big clutch hit.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
if Fabio was so great, he would’ve been called up instead of going after Scott Eyre. I know everyone loves young pitching, but what good is it if stinks?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
The Cubs announcers are PMS’ing about the strike zone. Awesome.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Come on, Ryan. Poke a base hit in the hole.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Howard puts one in the seats
August 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
You’re right Griffin, and that leads me to think that he does stink. He has to. That’s it. I can’t believe the management is that crazy.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
The strike zone has stunk for both teams.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
So are the Phillies announcers.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
BULLSHIT
August 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
He was safe.
Man this umpire crew is just getting all of them wrong today, aren’t they?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
nice hustle by howard…he got robbed
August 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
how safe was he? LA didnt seem to like it. But then again, he never does.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
did they show any replays on the Phils broadcast? These cubs homers are terrible
August 29th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Srage was my favorite until just now
August 29th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Put it this way. Utley was out. Howard was safe.
They called Utley safe and Howard out.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
umps legit blew it for us
August 29th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
It looked like Howard beat it or was tie, ump making up for bad Utley call.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Runners on the 1st and 2nd with your best hitters up in the seventh inning against a righty. What-re-ya-gonna-do?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
At least we can always count on our 3-4 guys to come through. Nice to have that confidence in our lineup.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Way to try and pull everything guys. They should just shift the entire infield to the right side of second base for our 3/4 hitters
August 29th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
These umps blow
August 29th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Crap, now I got the Sarge on the Cubs broadcast!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
why cant they use instant replay it means something the game is tied up in the 7th
August 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
my point about Castro is that he’s been in the organization for what, 3 years? and he still can’t get onto the team.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Does anyone relize we have no shot at anything this year!!!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
yeah, Sarge on the Cubs broadcast is an unwelcome kick in the balls.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
You miss two calls in a row in a game like this how are you an ump? And this strike zone? I know its tied but we’re getting fucked.
Scratch that, not tied because our bullpen has been blown to pieces the last week.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
dude. our pen is REELING
August 29th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
well, I’m going to drink now. Have a good weekend everyone.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
crap just jinxed
August 29th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
This is it man. The Cubs primetime players come through when it matters, and ours don’t.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Yea, I might pour some Admiral Nelson a little earlier than I thought tonight.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Stan, I realize that we have NO shot at anything. I predicted we’d go 0-4 this series and I’ve seen nothing to dispute that. Late in the year, we’ll sweep the braves and the nats and finish 3 or 4 games behind the Muts and make it look like a race, but we’ve been kidding ourselves all along about this mediocre team.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
So the Umps took at least one run away from us on that last bad call. Gave the Cubs a run (with the help of Jimmy Rollins) on that botched stolen base call.
Just a bad crew today.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Is the easiest call for any umpire the play at first? Damn that call hurts. At the same time, 2 weak groundballs to the right by our highest paid players gets us what we deserve.
Ryan Howard trying to leg out an error by the first baseman in a pennant race to get the third run across… come on.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
I wonder how people have become alcoholics because of tthe Phillies? I’ll bet no one has THAT stat!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Anybody find it funny that Davely Lopes likes to hang around first when there are botched calls?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Tagutchi… really?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
This is great! Go METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
So the count to Werth was something like 5-4, right? Because I can’t make sense of Welke’s strike zone.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Now it the umps? Always having excuses!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Just heard a great quote from Dave Sparado on ESPNNEWS.
“Philly fans dont go away when you lose, they just get louder.”
Of course he was referring to the Eagles fan but I think it refers to the whole fan base.
Get one across now Phils, 2 men on no out. This is the game.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Close SJ Mike- I think he called pitch 5 a half strike, something he invented earlier today.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
That is a good quote. D-E-S-E-A-N! DeSean!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
why are we not bunting!?!?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Good one Georgie……I have known quite a few who had a booze problem because of them..
.I need to go and tip one right now.. ..
Phils are super stress givers this year…I might take a few games off just to calm my nerves..
August 29th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
My gf got me an Asante Samuel jersey for my b-day. Man, it looks good.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
TJ Says “Philly fans dont go away when you lose, they just get louder.”
Then you better cover your ears the rest of the year!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
im so angry right now
August 29th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Hhehehehehhehehehehhehehehe Phillies Suck
August 29th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Nice fake SO! Wow!
August 29th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Harry and Wheels are starting to sound disgusted, it’s almost time for harry’s cocktail.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Man you are just a riot today, “Phillies suck”
Is this how you spend your free time? Coming here everytime the Phils are behind. You just cannot wait to sign on when you see that score huh?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
What is everyone so pissed off about in the last 10 minutes?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Can Pedro rescue this team again.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
NEPA, the awful umpire crew in this game.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
DOBBS NOT GETTING THE RUNNERS OVER
August 29th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Why do we suck in the clutch?
August 29th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Man, generally umpires change the corner strikes at least in different innings. Welke likes to change it every batter.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
wow, we suck.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Dobbs should have bunted.
Marmol has a dirty slider. Feliz and Coste made him look like a Cy Young right there.
August 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Uh, NEPA, the Phils are losing again, and now it’s time for our favorite inning.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
I know, but I can’t see the game so I had no clue the umps we’re screwing us that bad.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Griffin: “Stan, I realize that we have NO shot at anything. I predicted we’d go 0-4 this series and I’ve seen nothing to dispute that. Late in the year, we’ll sweep the braves and the nats and finish 3 or 4 games behind the Muts and make it look like a race, but we’ve been kidding ourselves all along about this mediocre team.”
Spot on. Yeah, we had a comeback against the Mets. But we gave it back the next night, then gave another one back the night after and look to be offering up another punchless game the next day. Good teams don’t do that. Teams that burn to win don’t do that.
We want to win…and that just ain’t enough.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Why didn’t Dobbs bunt? Not like it matters with back to back K’s afterwards.
Feels like another crushing defeat coming…
August 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
“Pitcher Change: Rudy Seanez replaces Clay Condrey.” That just screams LOSS.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
NEPA - catch the replay at 7 or 130 am if you wanna see for yourself. I suggest you take our word for it and celebrate the weekend.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I think we can rally in the ninth against Marmol if we can get out of this inning with only 11 more Cubs runs.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Castro warming up in bullpen!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
NEPA, the umps are screwing both sides so bad. It has been an incredibly enigmatic strike zone that changes and evolves every batter. There’s been no consistency.
Earlier in the game, Jimmy Rollins tagged a runner stealing second but it was called safe. Then Rollins overthrew on a double play ball that allowed a run to score.
Then Blanton gave up 3 walks and Eyre 1 walk to walk in a run. The strike zone was questionable there.
Utley was called safe on a ground ball he was out on. With that break, the Phils could’ve scored, but Howard was called out on a ground ball he was clearly safe on.
And then again, the strike zone just changes, for both sides. It’s an awful, awful game from an umpire’s standpoint for both sides.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
because charlie sweats dobbs’ fucking nuts and figures he’ll just bop one out with the wind blowing dead in. Such bullshit. that was a poorly managed inning. We needed ONE RUN. MANUFACTURE IT. FUCK
August 29th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Saenez sucks.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
TJ look who’s warming up!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
First time Buster Olney’s ever been wrong.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Maybe it won’t be a crushing loss, the Phils might just get crushed. 2 on already and no outs.
SWEET!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
@ TJ - I wish I could, but the Phils aren’t on TV where I am. I’m getting mlb.tv starting tomorrow.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
If I were hitting against Rudy Seanez, I wouldn’t give up outs by bunting. Swing away!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Howdy guys
August 29th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
How come the Cubs can do all the little things like sacrafice and the Phils can’t?
That probably explains why they have the best record in baseball.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
hey, how you doing?
August 29th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Why is it that the Phils offense is only unstoppable when we already have 5+ run leads?
August 29th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
haha
August 29th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
LOL @ Griffin
August 29th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Great since the Phillies are losing!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
am fine yourself?
August 29th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
not bad, thanks
August 29th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Danny - Its not like I reported it, it was what the announcers said and Buster Olney. Again, no announcement has been made either.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
TJ!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Terrible, since we are out by 6.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Haha, yes danny?
August 29th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
You ready to strand the tying run in scoring position to end the game?!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Marmol is gonna own us again.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

August 29th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Go Marlins, why do your fans suck so bad at showing up? No cash? What’s the deal with Miami/TB? Spend all your monies at the club? At the tanning booth?
August 29th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Is Jimmy serious? Now hes starting to piss me off, he swings at the worst pitch during that at bat.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Game over.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Marmol has a ridiculous slider.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
take care everyone, enjoy your weekend. Just disgusting.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Tyler - thats the truth.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Im speechless, terrible baseball.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

August 29th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Yea, I think this series might end up being the end of the Phils.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Great song they are playing at the stadium!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They’re singing …
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field
We’re singing now …
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp you feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.
You’re singing now …
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
2 down, 2 to go
August 29th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
See you guys. I’m taking the next 2 off.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
If the Phillies losing proves anything, its that some people who show up here clearly need to get themselves a girlfriend that isn’t inflatable.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Weres Lidge when you need him?
August 29th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Bullpen is back to reality! go METS!!!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
The only thing it proves is that they S*CK!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

August 29th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

August 29th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Well this quickly turned into a Mets board.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I love coming here to watch Philadephians wallow in their own crapulence when the Phillies provide them another heaping pile of sports misery. I love it when the dummies here whine about it, too. Only thing better is when they stomp off in a cloud of disgust because they’ve gotten their quota of ass and can’t suck any more.
Thanks for providing so much entertainment all in one place. If y’all would have pictures of hit chicks in bikinis, I might never log off.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Cubs: 1908 and counting. And guess what? They AIN’T winning this year, either.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
We should call this site METS NATION NOW!!!!!! What do you think. Sounds great!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Another tough loss for the Phils…I didn’t watch the game because i don’t get it,but i seen replays and the umps made some bad calls in the game…God i can’t wait until the day replay makes it’s way into the infield because it will someday.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Phillies Suck:I think you should change you name to Cock Sucker,it suites you better.
August 29th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
I’m a Mets fan too, but come on guys get off the website. If Phillies fans were to get on metsblog after every loss, we’d all be throwing huge bitch fits.
August 29th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Cole Hamels didnt talk to media after yesterday’s game, but later gave a statement to the effect “Going 105-110 pitches is pushing the envelope, especially this time of year. His body is taking a toll from so many innings pitched this season, and in that game he threw 20+ pitches in the 7th inning, which also took a toll on him. He completely trusts the bullpen, it just didn’t work out that time.” Not exact quote, but that’s about it.
August 29th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
This edition of drivel and “So called” Mets fans are making LEGITIMATE Mets fans look bad. “Phillies $v(#” has insulted himself for basically singing the cubs praises in the blog with THEIR theme song. What kind of a Met fan are you? Old school Mets fans HATED THE cubs for a long time.Worry about the Marlins and not the Phillies this weekend because the Marlins are not a team to take lightly and a sweep puts the Marlins back in it.
August 29th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Anyone for bringing Mitch Williams back? Was better known as Wild Thing.
Phillies ownership wants us to support an inferior product because they were too tight to sign Rowand and Lohse last winter and failed to get any help for the team before the end of the recent trade deadline.
August 29th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Joe Carter is retired, so I’m all for bringing Mitchie back. I was 6 years old when he gave up that home run, and my dad still tells me how I went over to the garbage and threw my maroon Phillies hat into it, balling my eyes out. I would definitely do that today if something like that happened again, no doubt.
