Gameday: Pirates (53-63) at Phillies (63-53)
Posted by Brian Michael, Sun, August 10, 2008 12:53 PM
This Sunday afternoon rubber match between Philly and the ‘Burgh has the Pirates looking to win their first series in Citizens Bank since it opened in 2004. JRoll is coming off a 4-for-4 night as the Phils got it done last night without need for the long ball. A homer or two today wouldn’t hurt as the Buccos have scored 2 runs or less in their last four games.
Where’s the Beef?: Speaking of which, Pat Burrell has just two hits in his last 24 at-bats (.083), Ryan Howard is 1-for-11 (.091) since Thursday, and Chase Utley is hitless in his last 10 at-bats (.000 for those that flunked decimals).
Double Dip: The Pirates have turned 17 double plays in their last 8 games and rank first in the league by turning-two 129 times.
Off to a Good Start: In the Phillies last 15 games (9-6) the starters have posted a 2.52 ERA with 11 quality starts while holding opposing batters to a .224 average.
Phillies: Jamie Moyer (10-7) 3.78 ERA
Pirates: Jason Davis (4-8) 2.57 ERA
Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 69, cloudy with chance of t-storms
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Werth/Jenkins/Bruntlett/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: Today we’re looking for something easy – easy like a Sunday morning – so we’re going with Sunset Wheat from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company in Wisconsin. This summery brew is Belgian Wit in style, but brewed with a lager yeast strain and a top-note of blueberry added. It’s a little on the sweet-side, so you can’t drink too many. Have it with some leftover pizza.
Go Phillies!

Here we go!
August 10th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Let’s hope Jamie gets a decent strikezone!
August 10th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
At least we have a true professional on the mound today.
August 10th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Yeah, a real class act on and off the mound!
August 10th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Any sign of this game starting soon?
August 10th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Any thoughts on Moyer being resigned for the Phillies next year? I think they will, and they should resign him for a single year contract. Make it a reasonable base salary and then toss in pay for performance incentives. Jamie has more than proven himself a solid starter for the Phillies. I saw an interview with him and he credited a rigorous swimming routine for his endurance and longevity in the bigs. I find it to be very interesting that he has no agent and he personally negotiates his own contracts. Very unusual in this day and age. In the future, I bet ya’ he would make a great pitching coach.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
FWIW, I saw him working one-on-one with Condrey before the game in Phoenix, so yeah, he’ll probably make that transition with ease. He ditched school to see the 1980 parade, he’s a lifer!
August 10th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Still pouring here about 30 minutes west of Philly. I’m not sure if they’re going to get this one in.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
What’s the weather look like up there? Think they’ll get it in?
August 10th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Still pouring here, about 5 minutes east of Philly.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
also tim: the 4-beer variety pack of leinenkugels beer is highly enjoyable. summer shandy, sunset wheat, honey weiss, and berry weiss are each very good in their own ways. together they are my favorite case of beer to purchase
August 10th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
The radar doesn’t look good
August 10th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
they just took the tarp off and are saying 3:15 start. we’ll see how far we get.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
As a weatherologist, from the radar, it looks like this game could get started in about an hour.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
+/- 30 minutes.
Thanks for the update Jamie. on Mlb.tv we just get the colorful mlb graphics and 0 updates!
August 10th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Danny – MLB.TV is always the same. Zero information about when games start after rain delays.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I have a love/hate thing for the rain. I know it’s something we need to live, but I hate it when it interrupts Phillies games. I’m trying to see Pineapple Express tonight around 7, and I don’t want to miss the Phillies game.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I am home in the philly area and i have absolutely no idea how they can think about starting this game at 315, if that is true. It may just be drizzling now but the clouds overhead are absurdly dark.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Brad Lidge is unavailable today due to a “sluggish” right shoulder stemming from a mechanical flaw in his delivery. He and Rich Dubee are working it out today and he should be ready tomorrow.
Let’s play for a blowout, boys.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I live about 40 blocks from CBP and it’s not raining here anymore.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
I’m not worried Brian. Durbin can close.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Move Myers to the closer role.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
How do you guys think we’ll do out in LA and SD this week? I think it’s a good opportunity to get out the road brooms, at least in SD. Manny will be distracted by his new haircut…
August 10th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Warm-up in progress, according to MLB Gameday.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
GAME ON
August 10th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Myers is crazy as a loon.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Does anyone else think this rendition of the national anthem is horrible?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Is this game going to start?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Right now Eli.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Nice, i hate fantasy baseball, whichever player i dont start does amazing and whichever player i start instead does shitty.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Phil, Pineapple Express is very average. I was at the game last night and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the team. Jimmy Rollins showed up which was rare and Brett Myers people, incredible.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Pineapple Express is some funny shit but i could never watch it again. It amazes me how good our starting pitching has been doing compared to the slumps of 3 of our best players.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
I saw Pineapple express yesterday. It was pretty good, but not as good as I thought it would be. I’m going to see Step Brothers next week. Anyone seen both of them to determine which is better between them?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Great, Jenkins, Bruntlett, Ruiz, Moyer
We are hitting with a 5 man lineup today.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Ya stepbrothers is funnier in terms of laughing. its stupid humor but hysterical. it really depends what you like in a movie. express better for action and shit and stepbrothers is just funny as hell.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
4 man; don’t forget, Utley is playing today.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Stepbrothers was amazing, I’m going to see Pineapple Express soon.
Is the part where he tries to kick out the front window the funniest part in the movie?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
This has been a strange week, not one of the 3 teams has made considerable ground in the divison.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
No theres funnier parts, but pineapple express isnt what i thought a movie about 2 guys smoking pot would be. its a LOT diff. than i expected
August 10th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I saw that too. Uber excited about the bottom of the line-up today. Jenkins, Bruntlett, Ruiz, Moyer…I’m going to say 1-12, 6 LOB, 6 K’s.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
It’s like an action movie right?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Shouldn’t our lefties roast this scumbag pitcher?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I think Jenkins gets some hits off this dude
August 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Ya, the bottom of the lineup is utterly worthless hitting wise.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
yeah, kinda.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
I love Harry but I am sick of these Home Run calls that end up getting caught! It’s time for him to hang it up I think. Which I don’t say with any joy because I love the guy and I hate T-Mac and Wheels.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Isn’t that just the way things are going right now?! Dayum!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
So when myers actually has a good game he cant just accept it?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I would think they could rake this Davis prick. we’ll see. He can’t be any better than Ian Snell, I wouldn’t think. Mahlom is actually pretty good, but besides him (and Duke if he’s on) the rest of their rotation is garbage. There’s no excuse for our offense not to get 6-8 off these guys today.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
I’m with you Greg V, although I’m not in love with Harry K as much as the next guy.
The homerun call is the most important thing the announcer does. A false homerun call is unacceptable. Harry has had like 3 this series! Or more! Who can keep count anymore.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Yeah Jamie!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Think Phil’s management can lure Joe Rogan out of the UFC to become our play-by-play guy?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I don’t they’d they like Morgan hitting the bong on the air.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Rogan I mean
August 10th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
More disgraceful first base from Ryan Howard
August 10th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Gavin Floyd is pitching on TBS
August 10th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Here comes the all-star hitters.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Gary Matthews and Joe Rogan form the most potent pot smoking duo in broadcasting!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Did you guys watch Brock Lesner murder Heath Herring last night? When I watch UFC, I’m reminded how boring baseball truly is.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
floyds velocity has gone up since hes gone to chicago. he throws hard consistently
August 10th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
who got their new brett favre jersey? ahhah
August 10th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Lol! Quit blowing bubbles in your soda Sarge!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
whoever bought the favre jersey is a toolbag
August 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
No Burrell today, didn’t even notice that.
Yeah, this is an L.
Also, im sick of Manuel not using Dobbs as a starter. I dont care if he is great off the bench. Last night he gets 2 big hits, and a walk to go with them. This is just so stupid.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I got an Asante Samuel jersey for my birthday. I’m practical about my jerseys, so I hope Asante doesn’t turn out like Kearse did..
August 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
it was the highest selling jersey ever for one day. shows you how desperate the jets fans are.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Yeah Jenkins! Bruntlett and Ruiz will bat you home!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
The only fighting truly worth watching is when there is an nhl fight
August 10th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
WHAT A F-ING JOKE. Keep in mind I wrote that last post pre-double play.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
It’s DP time!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Unfortunately for all of us Eaton pitched respectfully in AA today. Hope the management doesn’t use these really lackluster starts in the minors as a “see, he’s somewhat serviceable” argument to bring him back up.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
just like scriptwork. brutnlett his into DP. ruiz and moyer will lead off next inning with outs, so we won’t have a chance at scoring for two more innings at least.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
i made my own blog
August 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Matt, it doesn’t matter if he throw 5 consecutive no-hitters- there’s no room for him UNTIL Hamels goes on the dl
August 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
jason david has only even been allowed to start once! and they cant hit him
August 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Hey, what were Eaton’s #s in AA out of curiosity?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
I agree, you gotta starts Dobbs
August 10th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Would someone please reassure me that they are not going to get shutout by this guy?
August 10th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I wonder the Phils offensive rankings are if you don’t include the 20 run games
August 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
This will be a short outing for moyer
August 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
They won’t Georgie. 1-4 are going to roast this dude
August 10th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Eaton’s line: 6 2/3, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K’s
August 10th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
that was insane
August 10th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Jamie is the MVP of this team!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Jamie ran over the ump!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Wow…that was straight out of the Ryan Howard “How-To-Field and Throw” guide. I’ll take it though. Poor Moyer is probably gassed after that though.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
A BREAK!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
textbook example: make people field the ball and eventually they will make two mistakes in a row that are almost impossible and run into each other, a run scores and you get sac flied in from 3rd by j-rol
August 10th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
PLAY OF THE YEAR, UMP GOES DOWN!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
thats definitely the most entertaining play of the season
August 10th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
That was amazing. Jamie Moyer.
Jamie Fucking Moyer.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Hey, I never get to watch the Phils much. What the hell is Utley doing? Swinging at soft stuff? Jumping at the ball? I mean, someone needs to put Milt in jail, because if Chase Utley cant hit with him as the hitting coach, then he’s stealing money from the organization. Tony Gwynn would probably struggle with Milt as the hitting coach.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Uh oh, it’s pouring.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
I wonder if Chase has had a complete physical lately, he just doesn’t look healthy.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Gavin, he’s either injured or high on painkillers. Those are the likely options.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
sweeeeeeeet DP
August 10th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
He might be injured and as a result is getting high on pain killers.
Danny, I posted the Phillies offensive numbers without those 2 20 run games in another thread. If you’d like me to I’ll go find it.
I can’t believe Ryan Howard made that play finally. I’ve been waiting for him to do that all season.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Utley nearly drunkenly collides with Jenkins!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Here you go Danny. I found it quite easily.
“Phils Runs/Game average WITHOUT those 20 run games = 4.62; Cubs R/G = 5.32; Cards R/G = 4.74. If you replaced those 20 run games with that average, they would have 532 runs – good for 10th in the league. Did I mention that they are in first place in their division? And the offense has been horrid for 2-1/2 months? It’s obvious that our pitching is the reason we’re in 1st place in our division. Who woulda thunk it?”
August 10th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
the radar looks like if we can make it through the next 1/2 hour or so, we should be home free. even if we can’t, it looks like the weather will clear enough to make this thing official.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
i’ve thought for well over a month now that Chase is trying to play thru an injury, and has gotten himself into trouble with painkillers. I first noticed it after their west coast trip in June, I think it was.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Ryan Howard needs to eat a bigger breakfast so he can drive these ones out.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
someone should tell Utley to swing at the middle ball when he’s at the plate. hopefully that will fix his problems.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
hahahahaha good one Jamie.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
that’s why he blinks and squints like that, he’s trying to find the middle ball.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
They’re below average, right Phil? Minus 40 runs is like 10% of their production, so I would guess they’d go from what 2nd in runs to 6th or 7th.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I’d rather him have a physical excuse rather than to think he is sucking this bad all by himself.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
sweet…Bruntlett can’t his into another DP here.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Oh.. well done Phil, thanks for the info.
Yeah, this offense is average. And nearly Nationals worthy when we can’t hit a homer.
I guess it’s time to just accept it. If Rollins isn’t playing out of his mind, we’re average offensively and we’re lucky to be in the race.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
All biases at 3B aside, why would you play a RH who is batting .220 over the LH who is batting .310?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
i don’t see him sucking this bad for no reason, something has to be wrong.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Of course Gavin. Charlie is out of his mind.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
maybe i’m dumb, but i just don’t get it. have a weak-ass sally like bruntlett play every day as a starter (with his .220 average and no power), just to keep Dobbs and his moderate power and .300 average on the bench for pinch hitting roles. mmmm….am I the only one that doesn’t get Cholly here?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Also, you ever notice that when Burrell has a cold couple of weeks he sits, yet, Howard and Utley could go 0fer August and they are still in the lineup day after day after day. Bullsit.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Gavin, I guess we were thinking the same thing
August 10th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Has to be Georgie.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Because Bruntlett is better in the field and it’s nice to have Dobbs bat off the bench. He’s a much better hitter in clutch pinch hitting situations than he is when starting. Tim made a post about it a week ago or so. It makes sense to me.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Is it me, or does Gary Matthews really hate Tom McCarthy? I’ve really noticed the friction lately.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
He’d say its because Moyer throws alot of Gb, and I understand that, but is Dobbs that fucking bad at 3B that he cant play there with Moyer pitching, Geeeeez.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Gavin, because Burrell has a competent replacement. What are we going to do, start Bruntlett at 1st and Dobbs at 3rd? How about this, when Feliz comes back start Bruntlett at 2nd and Dobbs at 1st. hahahaha
Speaking of Feliz, anyone miss him at all?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Is it me… Or…. has Chase gone from
a .315 and 55 doubles guy to a
.285 and 40 homers guy
??????
August 10th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Gavin, do you remember Nunez started every game last year for Moyer? It actually is the reason.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I miss Feliz. He’s one of my favorite players
August 10th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I’d rather Chase be a .315 55 doubles guy, but that’s just me.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I really like Feliz a lot too. His glove is incredible, and he drives in some runs from time to time. He’s not great, but he’s good for our 7th hole hitter, especially in that sad back of the batting order we have.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
The reality is that several of our role players are having shitty years.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
tom mccarthy siezes EVERY opportunity to bust sarge’s balls. he even goes out of his way to dig up old videos of sarge striking out and stuff like that.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Tom Mccarthy=Chris Wheeler
August 10th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I think Werth should be our everyday RF from here on out. He hit .400+ last August and .300+ in September. He was a monster down the stretch.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I just think that *that* is what’s wrong with Utley. I think we all prefer the doubles Utley, but I think he’s changed his game a little bit.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Ruiz OBP for the game is .1000 hahahaha
August 10th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
CARLOS RUIZ!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I know guys, but at the same time, Bruntlett could play 1B or 2B and give Utley or Howard a day off. Utley easily has a competent replacement, Howard not as much, but still……
My point being is that Burrell doesnt get the chances that Utley and Howard do, and two, that Charlie has been wrong to use a better defender at 3B the last 2+ years while sacrifing offense…….especially when the team is in a major slump. There’s not that big of a difference b/n Dobbs and Bruntlett at 3B.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I understand that’s Cholly’s bullshit logic, saying that Bruntlett is a better defensive 3B, but come on. A .300 hitter versus a .220 hitter. And Dobbs isn’t that shitty in the field. If he is/was, then play Cervenak for the love of Christ. He’s a decent fielder (at least his minor league stats suggest he doesn’t have an overabundance of errors), and his bat can’t be worse than Bruntlett’s.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
A little bit of a run and hit? WHAT?!?! Since when is it run and hit and not hit and run? Shut up Tmac.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Geoff – I agree, I remember the other night they were talking about the blood drive, and evidentally, Sarge really hates needles. So McCarthy was like “Yeah, are we going to see you down there tomorrow Sarge”.
Sarge was like “Why would you even bring that up?” He was obviously annoyed. It was uncomfortable for the viewer. Sarge had to go out of his way to say that it was a great cause, I actually felt bad for him.
They are obviously grooming Tom to be Harry’s successor, but he’s gotta learn to stop busting his partner’s balls a little.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
On that “run and hit” there anyone else notice that Jamie had a better cut there then Utley’s had in 4 games????
August 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Why did moyer not try to bunt there? Or did he??!?!!?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Jamie, please do yourself a favor and go read Tim’s post about Dobbs vs. Bruntlett before you run your mouth. Yes, Dobbs is a .300 hitter, but he’s a .220ish hitter when he starts. His high batting average comes from him as a pinch hitter.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Tom McCarthy sucks! Why would they groom him to bu the successor? Is he the best option?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I’d say Vic should bunt these guys over, but with Utley up next it might be pointless.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Danny – I think he’s pretty solid technically, but he needs to learn to stick to the game and stop trying to “fit in” on the air.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
pirates fans cannot be happy with bays replacement being a .207 hitter who isnt a sure thing as a defensive outfielder.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
T-mac does good play by play. He should just not talk about anything but play by play.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Welcome back J-Roll
August 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Is anyone else not excited about Utley coming to the plate?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Predictions for Utley here?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Phil, I read it but I don’t agree. Sorry for “running my mouth.” I thought I was just as entitled as you, but apparently not.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I knew that was coming.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Pinch hit for Utley please, PLEASE!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
davis has really pitched well up until this point. its time to knock him out of the game but OH WAIT, chase utley GIDP..thats disgusting!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
He gets a hit.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Honestly, they have to sit Utley for a while, a few games at least.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Sac Fly.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Besides, I’m so GD excited about the prospect’s of Bruntlett’s next at bat I could just shit all over myself. After all, he has just been blistering the ball lately and peppering it all over the field driving in runs nearly every time.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
greg dobbs is not good enough to be a starter and hes a bad hitter as a regular. hes a good pinch hitter, THATS ALL
August 10th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
he has no trade value to anyone, he isnt more than what he is: a role player
August 10th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Wow. This is more painful than Howards slump.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Good for the Pirates getting out of that bullshit.
Unreal by Utley. I mean, we all expected it, but still, just mind blowing.
We all expected him to make an out, but to not let Howard hit there off d-bad righty magee? Unreal.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Geoff, that doesn’t matter. You have to look at him compared to Bruntlett, not compared to the rest of the league. He’s a 100X better hitter than Bruntlett, and not that much worse of a fielder. It’s a complete joke that he doesn’t start against all RHP.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Its time for Utley to go on the DL for a while and get healthy, either that or bat him 8th.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Chase Utley about to enter uncharted .270 territory. He might not even drive in 100 this year.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Georgie – They really can’t. They have no serviceable options. They really need to get a better utility IF next year. Bruntlett (although he’s done everything in his abilities this year), just doesn’t cut it.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
what you dotn understand, seemingly, is that when he BEOMES a regular player, hit hitting BECOMES terrible.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
right, just like last night when he was terribly 2 for 3 with a walk and a key RBI. no pinch hitter becomes terrible with more at bats, they only get into a better rhythm. I know he has a better AVG as a pinch hitter but the sample size is too low this year to really put any basis into that at all. you’d have to look at total career.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
also remember last year when howard was on the DL and Dobbs played first? He was awesome.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
BTW, if Moyer bunts that last inning we get a run. Nice decision making Charlie “Slingblade” Manuel.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Did we ever pick a nickname for Howard? how about “The Statue”
August 10th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Hahaha nickname that Phillie:
Charlie: Sling Blade
Howard: The Statue
Utley: ?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
there is a reaon why hes not an everyday player and why he should NOT be an everyday player
August 10th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Dobbs had 324 plate appearances last year. Those were not all pinch-hit, as a matter of fact, he started several of them. He hit .272/20 doubles/4 triples/10 HR’s/55 RBI. He had 7 errors in 68 games in 2007 at 3B, and 1 error this year in 30 games at 3B. He’s a lifetime .274 hitter.
On the other hand, Eric Bruntlett, your guys’ savior at third apparently, is a liftime .242 hitter. He has 1 error in 17 games at 3B this year, and only has 31 big league starts at 3B in his career.
Again, since the defense appears to be close in comparison, I’ll take the guy who hits for some power and 30 points higher. You guys can have Bruntlett.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
I really don’t remember Utley w/ one clutch hit all year. Can someone prove me wrong? And the home run against St Louis last week doesn’t count.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
utley, way to get in front of it
August 10th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Remember, this is Charlie decisions here. You trust him that Bruntlett is better than Dobbs? What is Dobbs average as a starter and what is Bruntletts. I bet Dobbs is still better.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
see, again, youre thinking there are only two choices, dobbs or bruntlett. the reality of the situation is that NONE of those guys are acceptable as replacements for pedro feliz, and they need to go and pickup someone at 3b on a waiver-trade.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Why did Utley grab his ass after he missed that ball-hip hurting maybe?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Geoff, you are completely missing the point. Read Jamie’s post! Compare him to Bruntlett, not the rest of the league, not to other starting 3Bs. The only question now is should he be starting over Bruntlett. The answer is an obvious yes. Jesus, how is that hard to understand?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Thank you Geoff. I wish other people on this site understood that instead of screaming to start Dobbs every 20 seconds.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
you DONT compare him to bruntlett, you go get someone better than him in a waiver-trade.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Utley’s nickname: either “Eyelids” or “Vaseline Boy.” Eyelids because he looks like he’s ready to crash with all the pills in his system, and Vaseline Boy because he likes the way it makes his skin feel. For those of you that missed his Vaseline plug on ESPN a couple of weeks ago, it was pathetic.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
left moyer in for too long.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
This is lovely. WE lost this. Should be a 3-0 game right now.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Jamie, what vaseline plug?
August 10th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Nah Geoff, Utley shoulda made that play. If he was diving for a bottle of oxy’s he woulda caught hte ball.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
how can you not be prepared for that? moyer RARELY goes past 6. you need to have guys ready in the pen IN the 6th
August 10th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Thank you Chase Utley for losing this for us.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
rich dubee is a bad pitching coach. every guys velocity goes down unless they dont listen to him. hes gotta go. so does milt thompson.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
i read that Utley and his wife just bought a 4mil+ condo in center city-maybe he’s worried about the mortgage payments!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Wow, Utley is looking lost right now. Is he hurt?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
How come you guys give up so early? Even though I am a Met fan, it’s only the 6th inning and you guys have one of the most potent offense in the National League.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Geoff, you can compare him to Wade Boggs for all I care, but you have to deal with what you have. We have two choices (well three actually with Cervenak) right now – Dobbs or Bruntlett. That’s it. Quit your wild trade fantasies and just focus on what you have right now, today. Dobbs or Bruntlett. Start Bruntlett with less power and average, with the hopes that Dobbs can PH with someone in scoring position at a later point in the game, or use Bruntlett in a PH or PR role later in the game and let the better bat in the game more – especially against a RHP. My choice is easy.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Paul’ we have decided that Utley is on painkillers.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
What I have seen lately, I don’t think any starter on this roster should go past 90 pitches. They all were over used in the first part of the season and are showing a loss of the plate after about 85 to 90 pitches. Not one of these starters should gripe about being pulled. It is for the best of the team. However in a few weeks we will see relievers starting to get tired from too much work.
Hopefully the starters will have refreshed a little from less innings.
Of course it would be nice if our power started showing they have power too.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
because the offense ISNT that potent, its a mirage. good pitching shuts them down. the mets bullpen trash does not though, but the mets starters do
August 10th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Shut up Jamie. You have no idea what you are talking about. Once again, please go read Tim’s post.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
jamie, i will not quit ebcause what you have now is inadequate in felizs absence
August 10th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Phil, that was some funny shit. Diving for a bottle of oxy’s. Maybe he’s scared to hit the ball, because he thinks they’re pills and he doesn’t want to destroy them.
Georgie, he was interviewed on ESPN News HD the week before last on one of their off days. I thought that was pretty cool, so I was stoked to hear what he had to say. Much to my dismay, he talked about his recent love for Vaseline, and that he is now an endorser for their products because it makes his skin feel good, and as an athlete that’s important. He was reading off a cue card and seemed all hopped up on pills or something – he wasn’t his usual self. It was disgusting.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Mr. Durbin, luckily the rosters get bumped to 40 in about a week or so. That should help the pen and the starters. Also, did Eyre pitch last night?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
no, romero finished the 8th and chad durbin got his first save of the season in the 9th
August 10th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
There is no one on this team who gives a shit about anything. Its depressing. Really showing their true non-championship caliber selves on this homestand.
If they lose this, they should start Cervanek at third…it cant really be any worse than it already is.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Geoff, I agree…both of them are inadequate when compared to Feliz. However, Feliz isn’t here. And Phil, you shut up, you big dummy!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
How come Burrell isn’t playing?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
I agree, we should try Cervanek out at 3rd, but when Hamels is pitching. He doesn’t have many ground ball outs and from what I’ve heard about Cervanek he’s a poor fielder.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
He’s slumping, Tyler. He’ll be a nice bat off the bench later in the game.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Good one Jenkins…douche bag.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
I know most people think starters should be able to go 120 pitches. Maybe when we are all a twinkle in our parents eyes.
Today the average starter is headed off the mound at 90 to 100 pitches. Believe it or not it is for his health and the teams betterment. I am surprised a 6 man rotation has not become more of a norm, to give another days rest between starts.
But as we all should know if a pitcher gives up 2 or 3 runs, it is not a bad outing.
His offense should be able to score 2 or 3, but ours is making pitchers look like they are all the Aces on their team.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
WTF!!! I hate this team. They make me want to vomit.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
OOh! Here comes Bruntlett to save the day!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Big double play. That really killed that inning.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Hopefully Cervanek is at least a right handed Dobbs in terms of his defense.
Its like the team doesn’t understand the concept of the opposite field (excluding werth).
August 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Howard does when it comes to home runs.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
are you kidding with not pinch hitting for bruntlett there????
August 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Guys comon – be fair here, do you honestly believe Utley is on painkillers? Sure, he sucks right now, but to suggest that he’s on drugs just isn’t fair.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Oh, Victorino sprays hits too.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
haha even Harry and Wheels are trashing the offense.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
i agree Joe, there needs to be a 6-man rotation in MLB.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
If I ever won the citizen 7 I’d tell them I use Commerce and give them their shit back. Oh wow a stupid tee shirt you’ll never wear and an ugly bag you’ll never use.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Matt, why isn’t it fair? The guy’s in pain from a bum hip, do you think he’s not taking medication? His play has diminished significantly, so there’s something wrong with him. I’m not saying he’s got a heroin fix or anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was poppin’ oxy’s.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Maybe I should say when there is a double play situation they don’t know the concept of the opposite field, and I’m not sure that Victorino’s approach is ever to the opp. field, but I agree that him and howard do it occasionaly
August 10th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
C’mon Matt, open your eyes-It’s not that he’s just sucking, he looks like shit, check out the major baggage under his eyes, he’s too young for that.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Hey guys, I can play a little third. I’m a lifetime .194 hitter with 3 dingers, so I’m not that much worse than Bruntlett. I know I can help this team!!!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
True Eaton, can you catch too? haha
August 10th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Well, he might just be injured. The toll of a major league season would make anyone tired.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Anyone as worried about Lidge as I am? This whole story about his shoulder has me a bit concerned.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Anyone else see this game being blown wide open right here?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Yeah Jamie, it also might be why he’s been pitching like shit for a while now. I bet it has something to do with the ASG.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
here comes eyre
August 10th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
im worried because they said rich dubee is tinkering with his mechanics. im VERY concerned. if dubee is screwing with his mechanics, he WILL decline and he might even get injured worse.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
If that’s the case, the injury is hurting his play bigtime, and the organization needs to address it. That could also be having a negative effect on the rest of the team.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
if chase is injured, go to the DL. its as simple as that. deal with trying to replace him later. if they cant replace him, its their fault and they deserve to lose due to lack of depth
August 10th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
There’s always Harmon. hahaha
August 10th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Dubee tinkering with Lidge’s mechanics???That sends chills up my spine.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Anyone notice Lidge’s velocity is down a couple of MPH over the past month or so?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Lidge says his “tired arm” or whatever he called it was because of a change in mechanics, and that was the cause of his recent struggles. I don’t like the sound of it – sounds like Tom Gordon all over again. we HAVE to touch up Davis here – 4 hits and 4 walks is not good enough against him. We need more. Good thing Bruntlett caught that ball to end the inning – Dobbs couldn’t have tracked that one down.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
No, but I noticed his slider wasn’t moving as much.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
He’s been in some higher pitch-count outings lately too, right?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
exactly, phil. im telling you guys, rich dubee is BAD NEWS, he has to go IMMEDIATELY. hes a dickhead who screws with peoples mechanics and screws them up.
brett myers fixed himself BECAUSE HE WENT TO AAA to get real coaching. if he starts listening to dubee again, he will decline again.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Good thing we just locked him up for the next 3 years.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
RUIZ!!!!!!!! HOLY SHIT .1000 OBP IN A GAME!!! haha
August 10th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
its all good, we can just pitch durbin for the 7th 8th and 9th every game…we’ll still lose 3-2, 2-1, 1-0, 2-0.
its not just utley, this whole team is tired. we can’t expect them to string hits together but they are a power team who’s lost their power. too many balls to the warning track lately
August 10th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
dubee basically ended tom gordons career by screwing with his mechanics
August 10th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Jamie, this is why Dobbs doesn’t start.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
FREAKING CARLOS “THE RAKER” RUIZ!!!!!!!!!!! This is like a career day for him, no?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Nah, he had a better day against the Cards earlier this year.
Once again, aren’t you glad Dobbs didn’t start? I sure am. That would have never happened if Dobbs started.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
see? dobbs, PINCH HITTING, drives in a key run with a BASE HIT
August 10th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Will Carlos get the Ashburn?!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Phil, I agree. What the hell would we have done if Dobbs was hitting doubles like that all game? What a bum.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
dobbs is a beast
August 10th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I like that Rollins is trying to bunt. Move the runner up, let Victorino try and drive him in and get the lead. There is a reason the Angels are the best team in baseball. They are good at playing small ball.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Jamie, the numbers show he doesn’t do that when he starts. This is what we’re trying to prove to you.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Seriously, we can’t lose the series to the Pirates, can we? No, really…
August 10th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
YES!!! Score him in Rollins!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
ok. get the runner in. shane, chase. get the runner in. sac fly, base hit, ANYTHING.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
clutch
August 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
how the hell can jimmy go from being so awesome last night to be total shit again today
August 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Geoff, should you or I pull up Dobbs numbers when he starts?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
is lidge available tonight?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Keith, he did have a sac fly, and he did try to hit the ball to the right side that time to score the runner. He just hit it too far to the right side.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
go eyre!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
No Ben.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Phil, I know what you’re saying – I just don’t agree. Dobbs is simply a better hitter than Bruntlett. He may not have as high of an average while starting compared to coming off the bench, but I’m saying he’s overall a better hitter than Bruntlett and that’s why I’d rather have him in the game. Period.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
pathetic
August 10th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Yes, Jamie you are right. He’s a better hitter than Bruntlett, but when he starts he’s just as bad as Bruntlett. He’s the best pinch hitter in baseball. I want his bat on the bench, but obviously you are too dumb to realize that.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Very pathetic. Hopefully the Oxy’s wore off and he will be able to see 1 ball instead of 3.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
fucking hawaians
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Thank you god.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!! THE OXY’S WORE OFF!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
holy shit…its about f***ing time
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
bout time utley
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
YES! thank you chase.
you can phil i gotta run to the store real quick before it closes
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Now that’s the Chase of old. He must have hit the middle one!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
I hate this argument over Dobbs. Yes, it’d be great to have his bat on the bench for late game situations, but when the offense isn’t producing — and the bottom of the lineup, with Bruntlett, is a virtual black hole — then you need to have your best hitters in the lineup. Dobbs needs to start as often as possible against RHP’s until Feliz returns.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
ok will everyone get off of chases back now?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I bet you guys love Utley now. lol
August 10th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
YES HE GOT A HIT
August 10th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I hope that long ball is the slump buster for 26!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
About time
August 10th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I need to stop watching more often. I come back and whole game has changed.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Romero then Durbin?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
chase isnt out of the woods yet, he needs to hit 300. if hes goes 0 for his next 20 no on is gonna remember that home run
August 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Oh god…you people are all dumb. DOBBS IS A BLACK HOLE WHEN HE STARTS TOO!!! Let me pull up the numbers and show you.
Bruntlett as starter (142 PA): .242 AVG/.312 OBP/.352 SLG/2 HR/12 RBI
Bruntlett as substitute (33 PA): .222 AVG/.364 OBP/.222 SLG/0 HR/0 RBI
Dobbs as starter (81 PA): .237 AVG/.284 OBP/.316 SLG/1 HR/7 RBI
Dobbs as substitute (62 PA): .397 AVG/.419 OBP/.586 SLG/2 HR/7 RBI
August 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
i am still scared w/o lidge.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
What happened to Lidge?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
81 PA is not a big enough sample size, sorry Phil. Give me his career stats as a starter and maybe i’d listen.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Oh god. Okay, well let’s just start Dobbs, have his shitty glove out there, and now Bruntlett’s bat is on the bench instead of his.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
The storm is really picking up near me, about 10 miles west of the stadium. Hopefully it doesn’t go east….
August 10th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
although hopefully they would just call the game, so i guess it wouldn’t matter
August 10th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
A good bat on the bench is nice, but how about one in the starting fucking lineup? You know, the one that gets to see the pitcher 4 times a game rather than just once? And Coste and Burrell are already on the bench so you could go with one of them anyways. You call me dumb for not following your logic, but you even say that Dobbs is a better batter than Bruntlett. So you’d rather Bruntlett the double-play monster and his “ofers” sit in the 7 spot, with Ruiz and the pitcher’s spot to essentially give away three innings to save that one precious at-bat that may never happen? Our offense is then expected to score all its runs in 6 innings, but give the other team a full 9.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
wow two rightiy outs for romero, bizarre
August 10th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
HOLY SHIT!!! WHAT A FUCKING PLAY!!! GO PHILS!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Jamie, he’s not a good bat when he starts. He’s a pinch hitter. He’s a ridiculously good and clutch pinch hitter. This is the point Geoff and I are trying to make. His role is that of a pinch hitter not as a starter.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Yeah Phil, you’re basing this nonsensical bullshit on 81 plate appearances THIS YEAR by Dobbs, rather than career stats. Take a look at last year (or career) and come back to me with some numbers. Look at my previous post regarding their career numbers. Enough said.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Dobbs is one of the most invaluable players on the team. He is as important to this team as a guy like Lidge is. His value on the team is being a great pinch hitter, not a guy to start a game and be an additional black hole.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
just saw that play of jamie moyer knocking over the ump, fucking hysterical
August 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
jenkins grounds in a double play
August 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
odds on a gidp here?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
It takes a certain mentality to pinch hit. Dobbs has that mentality. Most guys do not have that mentality. Some players need to be playing regularly to be able to hit, but Dobbs doesn’t have to. If Dobbs plays then we have noone on the bench that can pinch hit. The league average for pinch hitting is in the low .200s. Dobbs is hitting in the mid .400s as a pinch hitter.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Why’s Madson getting ready to close…Whats wrong with Lidge?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
The point you and Geoff are trying to make? The same Geoff that specializes in make believe trades and rants at every player whenever they have a bad day, wanting them DFA’s, traded, or bludgeoned at the hands of Uge Urbina?
In hopes of coming to a truce on the matter, I will acknowledge that Dobbs is not an everyday starter. He is a utility player or pinch hitter. However, when your starter IS down, and your choices are Bruntlett or him, I’m going with Dobbs every time my friend. You will not, and cannot change my mind unless you show me more significant stats. 81 plate appearances THIS SEASON is not significant.
Oh, and our new friend Eyre is in line for the win today. Welcome aboard, Scott!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Ben, the odds would be the best odds ever, their is no way you can lose
August 10th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
is durbin available? cause madson and walrond is frightening
August 10th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Oh shit. “Two-Run” Madson is warming up for the 9th.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
I hope Bruntlett hits an RBI single right here to shove it back in your face.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
ha, jenkins found a way to pull a ball to 2nd base on the ground on a pitch at his eyes, good thing werth was running
August 10th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
well thank god they ran werth cuz that would have been a double play
August 10th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Ben, frightening is an understatement. AT least it’s a 2 run lead. Lidge is out with a “sluggish” shoulder that needs a couple days rest, and Durbin has pitched a lot this last week so I imagine they want to give him a day off as well.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
i will give bruntlett one thing, his blonde beard is pretty sweet
August 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
At least he can’t hit into a DP here again. Oh, and Ben, if you want more details on the Lidge situation, you’ll have to sift through the “Bruntlett is a better starter than Dobbs” horseshit that Phil and Geoff have been spewing all day.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
haha, i’m staying out of that conversation
August 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
SWEET!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
GD i wish he could hit
August 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Nice job, Eric. Way to bring ‘em home. You were saying, Phil?
August 10th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Bruntlett is a better starter than Dobbs because Dobbs is a pinch hitter not a starter.
August 10th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
And Ruiz continues his .1000 OBP!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Bruntlett isn’t a flippin starter either! He’s worse than Dobbs…he’s just a pinch runner – not even a pinch hitter! However, when he starts, he has this mystical power than elevates his game to the point that the prick should be leading off, or hitting out of the 3 hole.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
OK, boys, let’s compromise-let Dobbs start the next series and go from there??
August 10th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Where’s Abe Nunez when you need him? Tomas Perez was here yesterday, maybe he should shed some light here.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I’m okay with Bruntlett starting some games against LHP, but Dobbs has to be in there against RHP. Period.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Bruntlett isn’t a pinch hitter, he’s a utility player/defensive replacement. He’s there if there’s an injury, that’s about it. He can play any defensive position.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
this hansen guy is such a cocky douche bag
August 10th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Since when is Burrell the one who needs a mental break?
August 10th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
the arrogant ump isnt much better
August 10th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Burrell hasn’t been hitting lately and his avg has dropped significantly lately.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
yea i know but this guys demeanor on the mound he thinks he is like roger clemens or something and he has never done anything yet
August 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
its so frustrating when someone doesnt understand something thats SO SIMPLE.
if greg dobbs was a good hitter as starter he would ALREADY have been a starter for years!!! he is 30 years old. a career bench player. when he becomes a starter his numbers go down, and when bruntlett starts his numbers go up, slightly. he is not the same hitter as a starter than when he is a pinch hitter.
weve been through this argument before. hes a backup, bench/utility/role player. hes really shaky as a fielder so hes only really a pinch hitter. bruntlett is WAY better in the field than dobbs.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Damn, we could have used 3 more runs for Madson. Oh well, let’s see what happens. At least I feel a little more confident in him than Aaron Heilman or any of the Mets relievers.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Geoff, I’ll tell you what’s frustrating…someone who argues with people saying they don’t understand something when they themselves don’t even understand what the argument is about. Who’s a better hitter? Dobbs or Bruntlett. Simple. Dobbs. You are basing your senseless bullshit off of 81 at bats this season, not career. If you read the posts above, you’ll see that I never said he is a *starter*, I said when your starter is down, he makes a better starter than Bruntlett. When you say he’s a “really shaky” fielder, throw me some stats to suggest it. I’ve already looked his numbers up as compared to Bruntlett, and I didn’t see that. I just want to know where you’re getting your stuff from.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Geoff, I sometimes wonder if these people watch the same game us.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Let’s give the Ashburn to Ruiz!
August 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Great Game!
August 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
lets lead ruiz off next game (joking of course)
August 10th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
I hope Ruiz turns it around now the rest of the season. He was good last year. If he can hit .260 he’d be a good bench catcher for Marson next year.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
but dobbs is not a better hitter WHEN HE GETS MORE AT BATS. i know, phil. its insane. hes a TERRIBLE hitter when he plays everyday, TERRIBLE
August 10th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
lol…you guys are too much. But it sure is fun debating the obvious with you!
August 10th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Yeah, it’s pretty much been that way all year. I love how noone will accept it though because they can’t tell the difference between his pinch hits and the hits he gets when he starts.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
It’s not obvious at all or even debatable Jamie. Are you calling the guy who runs this board a moron too? He wrote an article about it. I guess he’s dumb. Since he’s dumb stop posting here asshole.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
what a sorry series. this team is in trouble against any team above 500 and any team with decent LH pitching.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
I like our matchups for the LA series:
Game 1: Kendrick (10-5, 4.37) v. Lowe (8-10, 4.10)
Game 2: Hamels (9-8, 3.35) v. Kershaw (2-3, 3.71)
Game 3: Blanton (6-12, 4.71; 1-0, 3.27 w/PHI) v. Penny (6-9, 5.66)
Game 4: Myers (5-9, 5.09) v. Kuroda (6-8, 4.02)
August 10th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Blunt-let and Ruiz need to get it going. Against the NL West is a good place to start.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
When does Feliz come back? Any word? He would be good to have against the NL West since he knows those pitchers so well.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Phil, my my my what harsh words. “Stop posting here asshole.” Those are intelligent grown-up words designed for Mets fans. And just because Tim posted it and runs the board, it doesn’t mean it’s gospel. It means that’s his opinion. Just like his opinion (or maybe it was Brian, I’m not sure) that said that Blanton wasn’t a good pickup. Maybe it won’t be, but he’s looked good the last two outings so we’ll see. Point is, this is America, and opinions are like assholes – everybody’s got one. Just because someone expresses theirs doesn’t mean they are one – acting like your voice is the only one that matters makes you the asshole here, my friend.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Nice to have a little discussion going on this, and sorry I stepped out for awhile.
Phil: to claim this is not even debatable is ludicrous. We all know Dobbs’ numbers aren’t as good when he starts, but Geoff is basing his argument off of a ridiculously small sample size. Dobbs is quite simply a better hitter than Bruntlett, and has been over the course of his career, so when the offense is struggling to score runs, don’t you think it’s better to have the better hitter in the lineup? Isn’t that (slightly simplified) view of things not even debatable? And there’s really no need for that kind of language; we’re all on the same side here.
And Geoff: please respond to Jamie’s point about the sample size if we’re all going to continue to debate here. If not, then no big deal, but you haven’t addressed that point yet in any of your follow-ups.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Jamie: I’m backing this up with factual information, so it’s not an opinion anymore. I disagree with things Tim says, but not something he backs up with facts. It’s not even worth arguing anymore.
Phillyfriar: asshole. Like my language? We live in the Philadelphia region of this country. If you can’t take the language then you should move to the mid west or some shit.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Its a valid arguement for both sides…..can we all agree that we all need Feliz back ASAP?
August 10th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
phillyfriar and jamie: geoff is right. no need to continue the argument. you’re both just confused or overly tired – take a nap or something.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
We need Feliz back on 3rd, no argument here! Not only is Bluntless hit and miss at the plate, his glove is over-rated.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
I knew Mike T. would agree with Geoff and I too.
Gavin: Agreed.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Gavin: haha who’d have ever thought we’d say that? But completely agreed; Feliz back would solve this entire dilemna.
Phil: take it easy there, champ. I was just pointing out that “Stop posting here asshole” isn’t really the nicest thing you can say to someone. Obviously you’re not above that sort of thing, but many of us try to be, so please consider that. Like I said: we’re all on the same side here, so let’s agree to disagree.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
me*
August 10th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
i mean, we’ve discussed this several times before, backtrack the blog if you have to. i’m done with these recurring topics.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Mike T.: all we’re asking is that you use facts and stats if you want to argue something instead of making a conclusory statement.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
we – already – went – over – this – topic – before. backtrack the blog.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
phillyfriar, I did. Maybe you missed that because you were too busy being offended by me calling someone an asshole. Also, I told him to stop posting here if he was going to think Tim was dumb.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
PhillyFriar, it’s no use. You’re going to land yourself in “Asshole Lore” with me I’m afraid. You see, to avoid this mystical land, and remain blogging here with Phil’s approval, you have to suck the knob of anyone who posts articles here and accept their viewpoint as an absolute fact or truth. I am in NO WAY SUGGESTING that Tim, Brian, or anyone else who actually runs Phillies Nation is doing anything wrong or anything, I’m just saying that some of the others here feel like we have to slurp the phalluses of “The Man” in order to remain here. I digress, saying that each of us has a voice, and when it comes to Dobbs v. Bruntlett, mine is Dobbs. Apparently I have struck a nerve with Phil and Geoff (mainly Phil), and he feels like because I do not share the same viewpoint as “The Man” of the website, I am not welcome.
I would like to hear from Tim or Brian in this regard. Are we required to share the same viewpoints as them to remain here, or are we free to engage in debates regarding the Phils? Last I checked, that was what was listed as appropriate on the website. Hmm….
August 10th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Did you guys see Charlie’s reaction when asked about Utley’s physical condition? “I don’t want him to be hurt”. Weird responses, even for Charlie.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
you guys are really lost in so many ways.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Phighting in the red corner…. regardless of the line-up, let’s carry some momentum to the west coast and put a whoop on the Doyers and Friars!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I never said Tim was dumb either. Quite the contrary actually. I just think Dobbs is a better bat than Bruntlett.
All this aside, I can agree that we need Feliz back ASAP. Or maybe Geoff can whip up one of his Les Walrond & Clay Condrey to Tampa for Evan Longoria trades or something.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
I meant the SD Friars, not PhillyFriar!!! haha!
August 10th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Yeah, we need to kick the dogsnot out of the Fathers! Right after giving a little what for and how to to the Dodgers.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Tim and Brian say relax.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
lol…I knew that would be the response. Phil, we just all need to sit back and kick back to a few of Chase’s oxy’s. It’s all good…
August 10th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Pour a cold one and enjoy the fact that the Phils are in First Phriggin place in August!
August 10th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Mickey, you’re right. We’re up 2 on the Mets and 2 1/2 on the Fish. Great outlook, and some big series coming up – first on the road, then back home. We have a tough month of August left that we need to stay focused on. And, in the spirit of today, I will pour a cold one in fact. A little “Anger Management” from Angry Hank’s Brewery is in order.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Yeah, it aint that bad. We’re still sitting pretty, even though the big boys are slumpin. It’s hard to hit the Doyers at home, but by the time we get to San Diego things should be looking real good.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
We really struggled to win 2 of 3 against the pirates, but I will take the 2 wins.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
The Bucs are one of the best bad teams. They’re tough. The Dodgers have only won 5 more games than them.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
theres no need to go over all that again, just read the blog and look at his career statistics youself, lazy.
go seek out information instead of relying on recieving it from others.
the bottom line is they luckily beat the pirates today and ian snell was horrible last night. thye struggled to beat a bad team that is rebuilding again. they cant defeat even average starting pitching. the reality is that a bunch of people had a career year last year. theyre way overrated and they need a large influx of new talent in the offseason in all areas of the game. pitching, defense, hitting.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
if they split the dodgers ill feel a little bit better
August 10th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Lowe, Kurshow, Penny (with less velocity), and Kuroda all having losing records. If Blanton and Myers can bring it, we’ll be fine.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
they wont hit kershaw. hell shut them out. could be wrong but hes the type of pithcing they cant hit.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I’m more worried about the Pads than the Dodgers. We should beat up on all of their pitchers aside from Kurshow. If Hamels can keep us in the game maybe we can get to their bullpen. I don’t know what Padres pitchers we’ll be facing, but I am very worried about facing Peavy, Maddux(he’s a beast at home), and Young.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
That being said, I’d like a 4-3 road trip at the least. 5-2 would be ideal though.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
We should be gettin Maddux, Young, and Baek.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
That’s not so bad. We can beat Baek. We’ve already beat Young this year, correct?
August 10th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
We beat Maddux 7-3, Lost to Young 4-2 (Moyer), and beat Wolf 3-2.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
The Phils were very fortunate to emerge from this homestand 2 games and 2 1/2 games ahead of the Mets and the Marlins respectively. They were offensively tentative on their home turf going 3-3 for the stand.
Offensively, they better gear up if the expect a stretch drive reminiscent of last season. No complaints about starting pitching or the ‘pen.
August 11th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Hilarious stuff, guys. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Hey, I’m wrong at times too (not many, though).
Jury is still out on Blanton, but I’m impressed with him right now (still, it’s been Pittsburgh and Washington he’s dominated).
Anywho, I stand by my point that Brunt is good to start because his fielding is much better than Dobbs, while Dobbs is much better in a pinch. (The old Brunt/Ruiz/Jenkins lineup should NEVER happen, however.)
When all is said and done, the fact that everyone has their own opinions to bring here is the best part of the site. That it’s an open forum. So keep it that way, and if anyone is “slurping” me … well, sucks to be them. Ha.
August 11th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Tim, Blanton dominated the Cards, not the Nats. You’re thinking of Myers.
August 11th, 2008 at 2:32 am
Nice to take 2/3 against the Pirates because the trip out West is gonna be tough…It’d be nice to see em come outta there with at least 2 wins in each series.
August 11th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Ahh, right Phil. Thanks. Well, that’s definitely more impressive.
