Gamenight: Dodgers (65-65) At Phillies (71-59)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, August 25, 2008 06:36 PM
Tonight is a big night. The Phillies can sweep the Dodgers, delicious revenge of a four-gamer two weeks ago. They can also land back in first place if the Mets lose tonight. The Phils are 3-0 since putting Pat Burrell in the No. 3 hole. He is 5-for-13 with a homer and five RBI in those games (though the homer and RBI all came in one game). Brett Myers toes the rubber for the Phils. He has pitched very well since returning from the minor leagues. His last start was a complete game-shutout, his first since 2004.
Night Moves: The Phillies lead the National League in night game victories. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are No. 1 and 2 in the majors in home runs during darkness.
Sweep Stuff: The Phils’ other four-game sweep this year was in Atlanta.
This Day In History: Great stuff. Thirteen years ago the Phils and Dodgers met at the Vet — the first time the Phils would face Hideo Nomo, who had been reeling off the wins at that point. The Phils crushed Nomo for six runs in three innings, en route to a 17-4 victory. Gregg Jeffries hit for the cycle, Jeff Juden hit a grand slam and it was Darren Daulton’s last game as a catcher, injuring his knee during the game.
Phillies: Brett Myers (6-10) 4.71 ERA
Dodgers: Chad Billinglsey (12-9) 3.10 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 84, mostly cloudy
TV: ESPN2
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Burrell/Howard/Victorino/Werth/Feliz/Coste/Myers

MLB Gameday Audio

Your gamenight beer: The Phillies can completely execute revenge from the four-game sweep in Los Angeles with a win tonight against the Dodgers. Time to reel ‘em in. So, reel ‘em in with a Harpoon Ale. This Massachusetts beer is clean and pale. Great stuff. I love it. Eat some Thai-style noodles with this.
Go Phillies!

Lovin’ the line-up and lovin’ the matchup tonight. I would rather see Vic leading off and Rollins 6 or 7 hole, but Charlie has been adamant that he’s going to see Rollins through. Oh well, maybe tonight is the night he snaps out of his funk. He’s going to sooner or later.
August 25th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
how about rollins or victorino in the 9 hole to get 2,3, and 4 more abs with runners on base
August 25th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Jeff Juden?!? There’s a name I thought I’d never hear again
August 25th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
oh no, Steve Phillips on the ESPN broadcast, not a good start…
August 25th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Wicked bender there by Myers. This offense tonight is the best one to have – none of them are easy outs like Ruiz and Bruntlett.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Hey, Steve Phillips is the schiznitz compared to Joe Morgan and John Miller.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
true.
Morgan actually said that Howard “has good speed” right before he got picked off last night. Classic Morgan.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Well, that’s one way for J-Roll to get on base.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Yeah, I didn’t hear that, but my ears would have perked up with a quizzical “WTF?” if I would have.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
How about batting Rollins in the 8 hole. That way he could swing at whatever the hell he wants and no one would care how many times he hit infield popups.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
For crying out loud, when did ESPN become a rinky dink operation that couldn’t even keep their chords plugged in. Christ.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Well its blacked out because we have it locally, if it isnt on ESPN. Its on ESPN2 for everyone who isnt local.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
I was at that Jeff Juden-Greg Jefferies-Nomo when I was 9 years old. I attended it with my grandparents who had the half-season package, when it was available.
Those were the days…
August 25th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Well, I live in Portland, Oregon so I should be good.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
The game is having technical difficulties, can someone explain how Utley was able to tag from 1st to 2nd but Rollins wasn’t able to tag from 3rd to home??
August 25th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
looks like its gonna be a long night from brett
August 25th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Rollins “bluffed” the run home, which Manny threw errantly but was backed up (he would have scored). Chase being a smart base runner advanced on the throw, knowing that they would have to throw home.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Oh-oh Jimmy better get a hit now
August 25th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
HIT BY J-HOLE!
CLAP CLAP
(FINALLY)
2 runs in!
August 25th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
I’d like for Myers to keep getting a little more efficient over the next couple of innings so we could get at least 7 out of him. He’s going to need a couple of 10-12 pitch innings, though.
August 25th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Howard = weak ground out to 1st. Prove me wrong, Ryan
August 25th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
good start to the game, myers is starting to locate his fastball and getting early runs against billingsley is big. now let’s hope the astros get their bats going!
August 25th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Well then…he showed me.
August 25th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
dude, hes turned into a beast over the past few starts
August 25th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
J-Roll’s comeback?
August 25th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
On 6/27/08, Myers had his last start for the Phils before going to the minors. His ERA at that time was 5.84. He’s had six starts since (not including tonight), and his ERA is now 4.55. If he keeps this up for 5 more starts, he could be sub 4.00 by the time the season ends. I know it’s a lot to ask, but it’s certainly possible and we could sure use it.
August 25th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
When a player gets a double-play and gets a run in… do they give him the RBI? (What Burrell just did)
August 25th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
no they don’t, which i think is bogus.
August 25th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Yes, they get an RBI for fielder’s choices and double plays, just not on errors.
August 25th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I stand corrected…they do not on force double plays. For non-force ones they do. My bad.
August 25th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
So..what’s the deal..yes, no? haha
August 25th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Got it:
“(b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in
(1) when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play;”
August 25th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Thanks though to christopher and Jamie
August 25th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Pete, we sure could use some more here…
August 25th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Jimmy FUCKING Rollins!
August 25th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
I’ll probably catch some flak for this, but Jimmy’s probably the “frontrunner” for the Ashburn tonight. (pun intended)
August 25th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Rollins going for the cycle!
August 25th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
I can’t wait for the upcoming two-game series in Philly. Our offenses finally have woken up! It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Manny, 2 outs, bases loaded – scary.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
The BEAST returns! 7 scoreless for brett
August 25th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
david, shut your dirty queens face.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
You know, Mike, David didn’t say anything disrespectful. He complimented both teams and said the series would be fun to watch. A far cry from that douche tyler that’s usually around here.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
J-Roll is going 3-3 so far tonight? Be still my heart…
August 25th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I guess everyone loves J-Ro tonight.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
F the Muts and their fans. Too late in the season. Not really interested in people who defend them either. I really don’t care what they have to say. They can all eat shit.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
J-Hole for the cycle here
August 25th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
i still dont like him. im just not realy mad at him right now. he can never redeem himself fully. but he can earn one additional year if he keeps playing well. he still needs to be traded out of here in the offseason though. punk ass californian
also..can they please stop it with clay condrey? realy hes about to make it a close game out tehre.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Well that’s mighty nice of you to give JRo one more year. Did you ever think Jimmy doesn’t give two hoots what you or I think?
August 25th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
yes! condrey strikes out manny
August 25th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
who cares what he thinks? hes going to be playikng for the LA dodgers next year anyway.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
I’d imagine you or I don’t even enter into his mind.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
of course not hes insulated.
hell be a dodger next year and howard will be a yankee
August 25th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
And you’ll be the new Phillies GM…
August 25th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
ruben amaro gets the job and he will do what hes told: which is basically to intentionally fail
August 25th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Carlos Delgado = Juiced by Fernando Tatis’ “pharmacist”
August 25th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

I have enjoyed the sweep, am convinced all women are nuts, and am wishing for peace on Earth.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
That guy – you are the reason people hate phillies fans.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
geoff, that lineup and rotation is never going to happen.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Geoff can’t be serious. Joba Chamberlain? Ha! If we trade Howard away, we better get a lot more than an unproven starting pitcher. It will never happen, so I’ll just leave it at that.
On another note, to the Mets fan David…I agree, the series will be interesting. A lot at stake, but with this many games left, these two games may end up not meaning much considering it’s only 2 games.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
geoff-what are you smokin?
OZ-all women are nuts? You got the gender wrong on that one, dude!
August 25th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
not syaing thats all well get. but its a piece. maybe they get kennedy too. who knows.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
must trade. must demand immediate in offseason
August 25th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Or maybe the Yankees give us Cano, Kennedy, Chamberlain, and three top level prospects for Howard. Hell, I’d even throw in Bruntlett. God, I thought your stupid trades were over with.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
the Yankees would NEVER trade Joba for Howard. Joba isn’t close to arbitration eligibility. They’re going to go out and sign Texeira with the money they were paying Giambi. Joba is a cult hero and will be on the Yanks for the next 15 years.
Nice win by the Phils, I hope they win tomorrow, b/c they have NO shot at the 2nd game (kendrick vs. santana). Let’s see if pushing Hamels last start back a day works out…
August 25th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Like I said Christian. At this point in the season you are either for us or against us. Extending an olive branch to them and engaging in diplomacy is nice in theory, but in practice it just isn’t feasible. Muts fans are generally a sleazy circus folk and they cannot participate in meaningful social exchanges. They try to draw you in with empty compliments and then they start needling you with Howard strikeout references. I will not tolerate them for the remainder of the season and I strongly advise you to do the same. Honestly, the Muts and their fans can go to hell on a red-eye.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
hey i want to win and im trying to be creative and put some ideas out there man…this team isnt going to win shit with their approach…EVER. you got that!
maybe some miracle happens and they get on a run. thats the only way i can see it without them getting off their ass in the offseason and seriously reshuffling their hand
August 25th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Sweet win tonight. With Jimmy hitting the ball, the Phillies can and will anywhere, that is how important he is to this team. Utley and Howard will both come out of their funks if Jimmy starts hitting the ball like he did tonight. We were pulling for the cycle tonight, it was sweet.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
pelf is a beast
August 25th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
great fucking series for the phils! nice to see j-roll with 3 hits and on base all 5 times. if he heats up, we’ll walk away with this division.
phils gettin hot at just the right time. let’s keep this going through the rest of the season.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I’m a punk ass California Geoff!
August 25th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Geez, we’re winning, Myers is pitching awesome, the bullpen is stronger again, the offense is coming to life, Rollins gained some stroke back, Vic is leading the charge, and some of you kids STILL harp on about what to get for Ryan Howard in a trade? I love us Phillies fans.
Also, less than one week from the big Labor Day bus trip!
Also also, I went to the game where the Phils beat Hideki Irabu and Schill struck out 16 (first IL game against the Yanks). So that’s close to the Nomo game.
Also also also, C-Span is covering the DNC, is some chick named Leslie Bradshaw in “new media strategies” is talking. Smoking hot.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:07 am
griffin… i went to a game earlier this year when J.A. Happ was going against santana, and supposedly there was no shot. it turned out to be the only one they won in that four-game series. If kendrick gets the win, he has a better record than santana… how’s that for crazy.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Tim,
My brother and I were actually at that Yankees games when Schilling was ridiculous that night as well.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:41 am
Nate, I hear ya, but i’m just being realistic. Kendrick has close to a 5 ERA and santana is santana, bullpen blown wins or not.
I strongly advise the Phils to win tonight…
August 26th, 2008 at 9:42 am
also, I remember a Phils-Yanks game at Yankee stadium where the Phillies were winning, only to have Jeff Brantley blow the save, then the Phils take the lead in extra innings, only to blow another save. That was a long subway ride home.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
great, great series for the phils. they came in looking for revenge and got it. so many positive things for the team coming out of this, now they just need to keep it going into two of the most important games of the season.
