Gamenight: Nationals (44-81) At Phillies (66-58)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, August 19, 2008 06:05 PM

Back home, and they need these bad. The Phillies open a three-game set against the Nationals. The Phils bring Joe Blanton to the mound, while the Nats bring the great Jason Bergmann out to play. A sweep is practically necessary and the only thing accepted.

Tale Of Two Bergs: Bergmann allowed five runs in 5.1 innings in his first start against the Phillies, then allowed no runs in 7 innings in his second start. He’s been much better in the second half of the season, but got lit up (6 ER, 3 IP) against the Mets Wednesday.

Jeer?: Tonight is Jimmy Rollins’ return home since saying we fans hate them when they lose. Will the fans harass?

Cheer?: But tonight is “Campaign Cheer” night. We Should Be GM’s want everyone to cheer everything, no matter what. Will the fans abide?

Phillies: Joe Blanton (6-12) 4.79 ERA
Nationals: Jason Bergmann (2-9) 4.51 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, cloudy
Lineup:

MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday

Your gamenight beer: Tonight we go Irish, and we go with Beamish Irish Stout, an excellent stout with little alcohol content but a bit of a chocolate taste. It’s good with anything spicy or rich, so have some Spanish rice and chicken, then wash it down with some chocolate mousse.

Go Phillies!

  1. NEPA Says:

I don’t see us getting a sweep. We’ll take 2 out of 3 is my guess, anything less than that and you might as well shut the season down.

  2. Chris C. Says:

Between living in NYC and working long hours, I rarely get to see games live or on TV, but listening over internet radio and reading blogs like this give a very good idea of how this team looks. Over the past week, between the west coast swing and other factors getting in the way, I have just been looking at box scores and you can see just in the numbers that this team needs a monster kick in the ass or a fire lit under them. Something, or anything, needs to happen. A sweep combined with the Met’s blowing at least two of three to the Braves (Wagner done indefinatly) may be the thing. Either that or the good guys lose two of three and they limp to the finish line.

  3. Mike T. Says:

csn totally fucked that one up.

  4. NJ Says:

Does Jimmy automatically swing 1-1? In that count he’s like a slugger 3-0…

  5. Georgie Says:

They did that on purpose so we couldn’t hear the boos.

  6. Chris C. Says:

I missed the first inning, what happened with the cheers/boos?

  7. Mike T. Says:

not sure chris, comcast totally showed an example of how they run our lives by playing some meaningless follow up interview of jimmy rollins in order to block out the boos.

  8. jeff Says:

people talk about how china is too fucked up to have olympics. the phillies and comcast censor jimmy getting booed?

  9. NJ Says:

In fairness Jimmy should get booed at the moment, you start disrespecting the game and you have to earn the respect of the fans back.

  10. MIKE FLO Says:

wait jeff are you really comparing the issues in china to the phillies broadcast? wow intelligence

  11. Geoff Says:

dude, america has been doing shit like that for 100 years. william randolp hearst invented that type of state/centrally-censored media pradigm.

im not suprised AT ALL that comcast did that. they at least admitted that he got booed really bad. the phillies are also PIPING in fake cheers because jimmys boos got silenced fast.

  12. Geoff Says:

blanton better tighten up here. hed better cruise the rest of the way. you cant keep gravitating back to average. his era was at 4 even until, boom, gotta get that back up there…

  13. Rob Cowie Says:

WCW did the fake cheers during the 1990s on their wrestling broadcasts.

Yeah, I’m a dork like that to know such things.

  14. NJ Says:

The Phils do too much to apease Rollins and not enough shut and play ball.

  15. Geoff Says:

i remember that actually. it was when they were losing hte monday night wars at the end. in the beginning, they actually had better programming from about 1995-1997

  16. Geoff Says:

nice job shane. very nice hit.

  17. Geoff Says:

dobbs: make fucking contact and the game is tied. idiot.

  18. jeff Says:

tom mccarthy keep it down while vic gets a hit

  19. Geoff Says:

allright, good. gob job. thats what a professional baseball player should do. work the count, make contact and get the run in, regardless of how its done.

  20. Geoff Says:

    good job*

  21. Mickey D Says:

We better not become the Nats slumpbuster!

  22. Mickey D Says:

If I land in Philly at 5:30, you guys think I can make it to a 7PM game? I know I’m cuttin it close, but…

  23. Jamie Says:

you prob could. the airport is pretty close to the stadium

  24. CT Says:

so i take it campaign cheer has been a bust so far?

  25. Mickey D Says:

    Thanks Jamie.

  26. Geoff Says:

come on joe. this is the nationals.

  27. CT Says:

i’m this close to turning off the game

  28. NEPA Says:

Jesus christ. This team is fuckin done.

  29. Geoff Says:

have they become unwatchably bad? theyre awfully close to doing that. very close.

  30. Geoff Says:

if they were farther back theyd alreayd be unwatchable.

  31. That Guy Says:

    Blanton looks really sharp tonight

  32. Geoff Says:

up, get him out of here. this fucking guy. why do you have to be SO average. after 2 good starts, NO MATTER WHAT, he HAS to have 2 bad starts. it dosnt matter who its against either way, he HAS to balance it out. unbelievable. stop throwing shit over the heart of the plate!

  33. NJ Says:

    the offense looks sharp…

  34. Geoff Says:

also, if kendrick has one more bad start hes down in AAA too. im sick of it. were trying to win games here. the clock is running….

  35. Jamie Says:

the nats offense looks better than ours. at least they put people on and get them in

  36. Phil Says:

This team is bad. I’m not even going to read anyone else’s comments because it’s not worth it.

  37. NEPA Says:

    There we go Vic.

  38. Geoff Says:

if they canot get him in here. im turning this team off for a week.

  39. Phil Says:

Oh yeah, I forgot…we have one good player. Shane Victorino.

  40. Geoff Says:

thank you. its about fucking time. it took an ERROR to get him in.

  41. Phil Says:

YAY! They made something happen. Even if he woulda caught it I think Shane woulda scored. He’s so fast and he plows over catchers.

  42. NEPA Says:

I guess even we can score when the other team is hand delivering you runs.

  43. Stan Says:

Wow he is fast!!! My boy is a mets fan and I am really starting to hate even watching this. The nats can not even catch a pop up and we are going to lose to them.

  44. NC Jason Says:

Phil – lets throw Burrell and Lidge in that mix .. but other then that they are all shit

  45. Stan Says:

Get him out of the on deck box

  46. Stan Says:

    Told you

  47. NEPA Says:

If Taguchi gets a hit here I’ll shit my pants.

  48. Jamie Says:

hey look everyone – they are looking like a real professional baseball team – almost

  49. Phil Says:

I’m not considering Lidge…he’s not a position player. Burrell has been slumping hard too other than this weekend. If you include Werth we have a consistent outfield. On paper we have the best infield in the NL, but it’s not going well this year. Well, the past 2 months.

  50. Stan Says:

I don’t know which bum is worse?

  51. That Guy Says:

BOOS WERE DEFINETLY CENSORED. I have never seen a team that is more insulated from reality. The whole thing was probably Wheeler’s idea. Everything they do is a remedial, public relations NIGHTMARE

  52. Geoff Says:

as far as im concerned anybody but burrell victorino and howard can go in terms of offensive players. rollins can go. i told myself id never say utleys tradeable, but if he keeps this up? fuck him too, get out….

  53. Phil Says:

Myers needs to go 8 innings tomorrow and save the bullpen. I have faith he’ll do it.

  54. Phil Says:

    Geoff…are you forgetting Utley?

  55. Jamie Says:

    here comes a jenkins strikeout

  56. Phil Says:

YAY Jenkins! I’m okay with a sac fly.

  57. Pat Says:

    Time to test Tim’s theory.

  58. NC Jason Says:

It is hard to believe that Vic’s BA is the highest of the regulars this late in the season… (who would have saw that coming)

  59. Geoff Says:

at least jenkins drove in a run. at least he still actually can do that onceevery 30 times up there.

  60. Phil Says:

Victorino has been incredible this year aside from April. I’m so glad they didn’t trade him. He’s going to be a premiere player next year. .300 avg 20 homers 40 stolen bases .375 OBP .500 slugging.

    Rollins is garbage.

  61. Geoff Says:

OH SHIT!!!!!!!!!!! gidp for jimmy. BUM

  62. Phil Says:

When they get rid of Rollins next year Victorino can lead off. I think he can learn plate discipline. He’s gotten better lately. If Victorino can learn to take pitchers he can be a really good lead off man.

  63. Geoff Says:

yeah i was SHOCKED at how victorino has turned his carreer around in the past few months. just totally awesome. his low point was the houston series on the road. since charlie called him out in the paper the one day hes been on point.

  64. CT Says:

did rollins just gidp on purpose?

  65. Stan Says:

    bbbboooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  66. Geoff Says:

when hes on target he blasts line drives down the line.

  67. NC Jason Says:

Phil I think the way he is playing he has made his case. Ever since Charlie ripped him in DC in mid May the guy has played some inspired baseball. I am also glad they chose to keep him (good move by Pat)

  68. Mickey D Says:

Yo Charlie, how about benching Jimmy not because he’s not hustlin’ or late… just bench him for suckin and bringing the team down.

  69. Geoff Says:

yeah it sure looked like it was intentional. i think hes telling us he doesnt want to come back next year. i am now willing to guarantee. with 100 PERCENT CERTAINTY, that he wont be here. that this will get worse. hell get traded at the winter meetings. if im wrong? oh well, im wrong, no big deal…

  70. Mickey D Says:

If nothing else, Victorino plays hard.

  71. NC Jason Says:

    Rollins = Philly’ Manny

  72. Geoff Says:

jimmy slow to react to a double play ball. no outs, durbins in trouble now too..thank jimmy. chad durbin should turn around and flip him off.

  73. Stan Says:

    This is unreal

  74. Phil Says:

I hope you’re right, I want him off this team. I’d even get rid of Howard and sign Teixera.

  75. Phil Says:

    Good play by Durbin.

  76. NC Jason Says:

    Nice Play Durbin

  77. NEPA Says:

This is huge here. Gotta get outta this inning scoreless.

  78. Mickey D Says:

He reminds me of Rolen a few years ago. I thought we had a real chance and that Rolen not only burned the club, but Bowa too. Say what you will, but Bowa IMO, is what I look for in a coach.

  79. Rob Cowie Says:

It’s bad when we can’t even take it to a Triple A team that is paraded as a major league one. I’m off to work. Enjoy the game everyone. I’l check back with you’s in the morning. This site is firewalled from my computer at work so all I really can do is read Yahoo news.

  80. Phil Says:

Anyone else really like Victorino in the 6 hole right now? He’s good for production in the bottom of the line up.

  81. NC Jason Says:

I said the same thing to my buddy the other day, but where do you bat Feliz when he is back? 7?

  82. Phil Says:

Yeah, Feliz 7 that’s more production coming back.

  83. NC Jason Says:

My hope for the off-season is that we trade Rollins but not to the West coast where he wants to be but to a team like the Bluejays that have no chance at winning and where we would be miserable.

Does Rollins have a no trade clause?

  84. NC Jason Says:

    he not we*

  85. Phil Says:

It’s so sad that the Nats offense looks better than ours tonight. And what the fuck is up with Belliard?

  86. TJ Says:

I feel a comeback win, Burrell walk, Vitorino singlr, Dobbs double.

  87. NC Jason Says:

On the radio LA is siding with the fans. He is stating that we have had 41 sellouts this year and that the fans care, regarding them booing, and how we as fans are just starving for playoff baseball. And how awsome the fans were in September last year. His comment was that winning seaon do not mean anything – it is playoffs! His last comment was if you are winning you will not be booed.

  88. TJ Says:

Atleast Belliard cant steal a bag but he is slapping the ball tonight.

  89. pissed of says...... Says:

then jroll will kill the rally boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  90. fred Says:

mlb.com is reporting wagners season could be over. Sorry if that’s already been mentioned on here.

  91. Phil Says:

    YAY FUCK WAGNER!

  92. TJ Says:

If Jimmy Rollins homers to tie it up or something big, boo or cheer?

  93. Geoff Says:

why would they ever trade rolen? he bitched his way out of here, and j-roll saw it and knows he can do it too.

  94. Mickey D Says:

Send him to the A’s, he said that’s his team. Will Billy Beane fall for it though?

  95. Phil Says:

MAn, that was a really good play.

  96. TJ Says:

Noo! We need Wagner back to blow some more games for them, no one else in that pen is more reliable for that except maybe Heilman.

  97. NC Jason Says:

If nothing else, I will take pleasure in the misery of others

  98. TJ Says:

    Too expensive for the A’s.

  99. Phil Says:

The A’s have a lot of prospects they can give up and Rollins is signed cheap. He’d play really well in his home town probably. They need a player like Rollins to come be the back bone of the team.

  100. Geoff Says:

beane wont take him, he knows better. yes, error, shane to third. awesome. shane has become dangerous. awesome!

  101. NEPA Says:

Haha, what a dumb play. They’re handing us this game and we better take it.

  102. Geoff Says:

    whaaat? get him charlie

  103. NC Jason Says:

    FUCK JOE WEST

  104. Phil Says:

    WTF IS THAT!!!

  105. NEPA Says:

    what the hell?

  106. NC Jason Says:

    Interference on Dobbs

  107. Geoff Says:

    we got hosed. dobbs GIDP.

  108. Phil Says:

    Fuck that ump.

  109. NC Jason Says:

No the Ump interfered not Dobbs

  110. Phil Says:

Woulda been 4-4 if that ump wasn’t a douche bag. Coste will GIDP.

  111. Geoff Says:

nice. shane is FAST man that was right in front of him.

  112. NEPA Says:

Screw that ump. Wow, Vic can really fly.

  113. NC Jason Says:

West could not get his fat ass out of the way – Single scored should be tied!

  114. pissed of says...... Says:

west hates the phils since dennis cook

  115. Phil Says:

The bottom end of the line up looks really good tonight.

  116. NC Jason Says:

How silly is Vic making Rollins look right now?

  117. Phil Says:

In a play like that they should have to compromise and give him 2nd.

  118. Geoff Says:

who do we have one the bench? bruntlett, ruiz, taguchi, cervenak?

shit…pinch hit hamels for coste and then plug ruiz in after the innings over for coste.

  119. fred Says:

I predict a big hit for coste. Saying that, he’ll probably smite me and GIDP. Please, please don’t.

  120. Geoff Says:

did anyone see that jealous look jimmy flashed shane right there when they cut to him?

  121. Phil Says:

Shane Victorino is slowly becoming my favorite player.

  122. Phil Says:

    They better shell, Shell haha

  123. NC Jason Says:

    Big at bat here….

  124. NEPA Says:

If they don;t get that run in from 3rd I might have to turn this off. GIDP here and I won’t watch the rest of this series.

  125. TJ Says:

He’s the only positional player that plays with intensity.

  126. Phil Says:

The fans are getting into it.

  127. Phil Says:

YEAH!!! Situational baseball is being played tonight.

  128. Geoff Says:

ok, ill take a sac fly. niiice.

  129. NC Jason Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!

  130. NEPA Says:

Haha, I love Vic. Almost took out the ump for the shitcall he just made.

  131. Geoff Says:

one quick thing here. taguchi DFA????

  132. NC Jason Says:

Three runs on three sac flies….

West could not get out of Shane’s way as he slid – West is a fat mess

  133. fred Says:

    Taguchi suuuuuuuucks

  134. pissed of says...... Says:

taguchi wow can what can you do right

  135. CT Says:

they should’ve just let Durbin take that AB

  136. TJ Says:

Jimmy Rollins, big hit. If he gets the at bat then I think he’ll come through, he has to for his well being of a Phillie.

  137. Phil Says:

The Muts are losing too. It’s probably why they don’t have trolls on here right now.

  138. TJ Says:

The Braves couldnt expand their lead with men on the corners with one out.

  139. NC Jason Says:

    Nice inning by Madson

  140. fred Says:

1,2,3 up in the order. If they don’t score now against a mediocre bullpen, they never will.

  141. TJ Says:

Here comes the best part of our lineup, rolls eyes.

  142. pissed of says...... Says:

madson is doing much better then earlier in the season

  143. TJ Says:

    He took pitches!

  144. NC Jason Says:

Rollins 2 for his last 26

  145. Phil Says:

Yeah, well Rollins is no Joe Morgan, Wheels.

  146. Phil Says:

You suck Jimmy. Stop swinging for the fences. Get on base fucker.

  147. Geoff Says:

    haha. another out from j-stroll

  148. fred Says:

    boooooooo

  149. pissed off says...... Says:

    phil i agree

  150. NC Jason Says:

He never has learned to hit the ball on the ground and to hit line drives.

0-4 tonight and the FANS are the problem…..

  151. Geoff Says:

    YES!!!! werth!!!

  152. NC Jason Says:

    WERTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  153. TJ Says:

If he keeps that ball lower with a level swing then he’s on base right now, good at bat aside from the end result.

  154. CT Says:

    OH YEAH, TOTALLY WERTH IT!

  155. pissed off says...... Says:

    yaaaaaaaaaaaaaa werth

  156. TJ Says:

Johnny Wacko! Is that old now or still usable?

  157. Geoff Says:

you know what? werth can stay too. his numbers arent bad for how much he costs..

  158. NEPA Says:

    WACKO!!!!

  159. fred Says:

    johnny wacko !

  160. TJ Says:

    Same page NEPA.

  161. TJ Says:

    and fred… hahaha

  162. NEPA Says:

    Good call by Kalas too.

  163. NC Jason Says:

Piece up on Phillie.com about Rollins booing. One of his comments is that Utley has really never been booed – I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that he is a gamer and hustles, is never late, nor has ever been benched….

  164. Mickey D Says:

    Can Werthy play SS?

  165. pissed off says...... Says:

ROLLINS HUSTLES SO MUCH DOWN THE LINE I BET BURRELL COULD OUT RUN HIM

  166. fred Says:

Great minds thing alike TJ. Utley looks really bad atm…

  167. NEPA Says:

NC Jason, if its the same interview I saw then he was just making a joke basically. He was saying how him, Burrell, Howard etc. have gotten their fair share of boos, then he laughed and said Utley hasn’t quite been touched yet and its because he continues to put up great numbers.

  168. lilgartrn Says:

Gotta say, that ball Rollins just hit should have been a homer – think it was the wind – just a touch off of what Werth hit….. He’s trying – I’d rather have them go down trying…

  169. NC Jason Says:

Ok thanks for the clarification. But even now Utley still gets a pass because he busts his ass all the time and does not do the things that Rollins has… Thanks though

  170. Mickey D Says:

Utley will be a HOF’r, Rollins looks like he’s happy winning the MVP and will just coste through the next coupla years with his trophy.

  171. NEPA Says:

Yea, agreed. Utley’s struggling but he plays the game the way it should be played, so people respect that and don’t boo him.

  172. NC Jason Says:

Something that Jimmy does not understand – above all in Philly hustle!

  173. pissed off says...... Says:

STAND UP WERE FRONT RUNNERS REMEBER

  174. NEPA Says:

    I’m on my feet.

  175. Phil Says:

Campaign cheer was awesome. Fans need to continue it. The bottom of the line up contributed and they were getting cheered on.

  176. Geoff Says:

    and brad lidge is awesome

  177. NC Jason Says:

    Lights Out

  178. NEPA Says:

Side note – bases loaded, 1 out for the Mets – Delgado batting.

  179. Jamie Says:

Braves are in some trouble in the bottom of the 8th. Bases loaded, one out.

  180. NC Jason Says:

Werth set a craeer best with his 17th HR. And this win is an answer to Tim’s post on Monday – hitting from the bottom of the order and good things happen

  181. NC Jason Says:

The Mets would be in a worse position if they did take the lead because their bullpen can not hold it – they had better win ever game in the btm of the 9th

  182. fred Says:

    bollocks

  183. NEPA Says:

    Damn, Mets took the lead.

  184. Mickey D Says:

I’ll take it! We aint no slump busters!

  185. Eli Says:

    whats with the shitty bullpens

  186. NEPA Says:

Wow, the braves really suck. We’re gonna have to sweep the Nats to keep pace.

  187. Mark Says:

Good comeback. Werth deserves to play everyday in RF. The offense is still lethargic. Blanton had a shaky outing but kept us in the game for 5 innings. The bullpen took care of the rest. Anything less than a sweep is a problem. And we better at least split with LA.

  188. Geoff Says:

They also need to sweep the mets. A split against them is disgraceful.

  189. rollinsright!! Says:

    LMAO….You philly fans are pathetic…lmao

  190. TJ Says:

Anyone watch the post game last night? Micth Williams was making some great points about Rollins’ comments and it was a pretty simple theory that Rollins doesnt quite get if he called us frontrunners. He like many pointed out that when we boo its because we know you can do better and we are a “What have you done for us lately?” type of fan base. The MVP award from last doesnt mean anything now aside from the fact that you raised your own standards and when you dont live up to the standards you have made for yourself then we tend to get on you about it. Manuel also said that Jenkins is going to start playing more because he thinks that he will get hot at some point, c’mon Manuel play Werth, he has been nothing short of spectacular this year. Feliz returns tonight, that should be good to see with Vic anchoring the bottom of the lineup, if Werth bats 2nd. Bullpen proved that they could hold up in a pressure situation, even if it was against the Nats. Overall it was a good game to watch. Kind of off topic, but do you think that our starters pitch better in closer games under pressure in the first six, because half our runs have come late when the bullpen enters the game, just throwing it out there.

  191. TJ Says:

… so why are you here?
