Gamenight: Phillies (59-49) At Cardinals (61-50)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, August 01, 2008 05:59 PM
With a sweep of the Nationals done, the Phillies will take it to Saint Louis to play a three-gamer with the Cardinals. They’ll be looking for their sixth-straight win and 60th win overall.
Number Nine …: Cole Hamels is gunning for his 10th win of the season again tonight. He’s been stuck on nine wins for almost a month (July 3).
Hey Kyle, Part II: The Phillies will face old teammate Kyle Lohse, who dominated them the last time out (2 ER, 8 IP).
Friday Night Rules: The Phillies are not only great on Fridays, but last time they played in Busch Stadium II on a Friday night, they pounded 20 runs against the Cardinals.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (9-6) 3.27 ERA
Cardinals: Kyle Lohse (12-3) 3.68 ERA
Gametime: 8:15 p.m. EST
Weather: 89, partly cloudy
Lineup:
MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday
Your gamenight beer: This is Bender, by Surly in Minnesota. I wish it was named after the beer-drinking robot of “Futurama” fame, but alas, it’s not. Still, this is an easy-driniking brown ale that comes in can or weird-looking ice-tea jug, evidently. Wow. Eat penne pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and pesto sauce with this..
Go Phillies!

Are you going to run out of beers sooner or later? Jeez.
I’m predicting a nice game from Rollins. 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R
I hope Cole can go the distance tonight and hit double digit K’s. I want that 10th win in fashion.
August 1st, 2008 at 6:48 pm
There are way more than 162 beers in this world.
August 1st, 2008 at 7:21 pm
my beer of choice tonight will have to be budweiser. Made a major detour in my vacation to see them [win] at busch stadium tonight. Go, Phils!
August 1st, 2008 at 7:25 pm
I hope Kyle Lohse doesn’t piss in Gillicks metamucil again.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:02 pm
My beer of choice is Newport Storm from Newport, RI brewed by my friends Derrick and Brent! Great session beer! Also a great brewery tour in Middletown, RI. Check it out if you ever make it to RI! It’ll be worth your while!
I like Chase Utley tonight against the righty Lohse! I predict Chase goes 2-3 with a walk, a single, a double, 1 run, and 2 rbi’s.

August 1st, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Anyone else think batting the pitcher 8th is an awesome move? Tony L is the man.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:32 pm
danny yes it is but its a insult to the 9 hitter
August 1st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
I guess you could look at it that way. On my slow pitch team I will bat my worst hitter second to last too.
I don’t think there’s any question that Schumaker is a better hitter than Lohse. I can’t imagine Schumaker gets his feelings hurt. It’s just a strategic move.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I can’t believe Kyle Lohse became an “ace”. Just an f-ed up situation.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I was thinking the same thing where is Harry?
I must say one of the best things about having XM is NOT hearing Wheeler every game. He sucks.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Anyone else’s mlb.tv acting like an asshole?
August 1st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
They just said Harry cant travel because of his eye surgery
August 1st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
and i agree, wheels is trash
August 1st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Yup I can’t get mlb.tv to work either.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:43 pm
thanks i hate wheels

Cole’s stats are unreal. He’s gonna win a couple Cys.. I hope he sticks around.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Jeff, the radio is working…
August 1st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Dempster/Zambrano are 1-2 in run support; Cole is 4th to last. That’s include the 10 spot they put up last time against Atlanta.
Yeah, I’m pretty bored without mlb.tv.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Thanks, I guess I’ll have to live with the radio for now.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Its back working for me @ the low bandwidth
August 1st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
yes Danny! It totally keeps just stopping on me! I just reset my router and restarted my PC because it kept stopping on me. Obviously for no f’in reason everytime. Their website drives me crazy at times!
Ditto! Wheels sux!
August 1st, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Yup back to working here too and I don’t think my reset and reboot has s*?% to do with it either.
August 1st, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Kyle Lohse gonna not hit us tonight or what?
August 1st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Hamels doesn’t look like himself out there. Not trying to jump on the rumor mill, but he isn’t as sharp.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:01 pm
yeah cole is gettin knocked around tonight. send myers out to the mound to talk to him
August 1st, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Haha, not bad Asphincter.
On that note, maybe the Old Professor should take over Doobs job next year. Keep Moyer in Philly (if he doesn’t come back as our #4 or #5)
August 1st, 2008 at 9:03 pm
What’s the rumor BDuns? He’s injured? Is that what Eskin said?
August 1st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
not good
August 1st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Yeah, Eskin said something about his throwing arm. Then again, it’s Eskin.
Then again, Hamels just gave up a 3 rum bomb. who knows.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I get the impression God is a Cardinals fan.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:06 pm
The problem is, we’re not playing a AAA ball club anymore.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Hamels does not seem to have anything tonight. velocity seems down
August 1st, 2008 at 9:08 pm
velocity, control, can’t hit his spots…..
August 1st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
yup…I’m getting the distinct impression that the Eskin ‘rumor’ of a fracture in the throwing arm elbow may be true. After seeing this inning alone (and it’s the only one i’ve seen since last Saturday when i was at the bank against the Braves). Cole’s not right!
If it is true, their done and they might as well trade away the expendable pieces and build for next year.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Is Howard hands down the worst fielding first baseman?
August 1st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
I hate to talk about the trade deadline again guys, but tonight is a great example of why we NEEDED TO GET A STARTER. I love Hamels, but he isn’t going to do it everytime.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
*Not Joe Blanton either, they guy will eat innings. I mean an Ace.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Hamels is on his way to his yearly visit on the shelf.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
I’m no Orthopedic Surgeon, but I’d think a fracture in your elbow would prevent Hamels from even picking up a ball.
What gives?
August 1st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
There was no one to get BDuns. The time to get shit done was in the off season. This team is flawed and we’ll be lucky to stay in it until the end.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
The more I watch, and the more I post, the more I realize I’m becoming Mike T. Hah.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Did you guys know that Burrell is also leading the league in total mass of dip stuffed into his mouth at once?
August 1st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Phils are really tearing the cover off the ball tonight!
August 1st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
There wasn’t much out there, your right.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
The Phils may be flawed but the good news is its going to be a competition of flaws between the entire division. I don’t think its all that wrong to say the Mets and Marlins aren’t even more flawed. Ed Wade’s boys are getting to Pedro.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Hamels hit 92 there…no idea whats goin on…
August 1st, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I will eat my previous post, he seems to be settling in.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Looks like it will be up to the bats tonight to bail him out again
August 1st, 2008 at 9:25 pm
No way he has a fractured anything. Google it and look up the symptoms. Severe swelling. Severe pain. Decreased range of motion. Lump or visible deformity around site of break. Numbness. You think Cholly or the teammates and trainers wouldn’t notice that? Treatment needed: anesthesia to put in screws or metal plate, or in non-severe cases, splints or casts. NO way he throws 90+ mph fastballs and breaking balls without being in EXTREME pain. He is just having another off night – happens to the best of them.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:27 pm
‘Good news is its going to be a competition of flaws’. How is that good news? A competition of flaws doesn’t win a WS.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Hamles gets the first hit. Love it. Lohse should have taken our deal.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
*especially for snaring a liner like that
August 1st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Hamels = head case
August 1st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
i fucking said they needed an elite pitcher and an elite hitter.
this cardinals team isnt going to make the playoffs and theyre blanking us. we gotta get it together here. hamels is NOT invinceable and you cant rely on him if hes the only elite guy youve got out there. he cant do everything himself.
dave duncan is the best pithcing coach ever. kyle lohse is a total machine. that must mean rich dubee isnt very good. lohses velocity is up and his command is pinpoint. hes different man
August 1st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
there wasnt much out there, i think the failure has been in place for a long time. theyre just not as good as theyre hyped up to be. even if they make the playoffs theyre still overhyped.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Sarge got up early today and did a little shopping today. Just in case anyone cared.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
At this point you play with the hand you are dealt. We can sit here and bitch and moan all we want about ‘they should have done this’ or ‘why did they do that’ but this is the team we have. I don’t know about eeryone else but I take a certain amount of comfort in the fact that we know there are no perfect teams in this division. I’m a realist and therefore I know a WS is probably not in the cards but make the playoffs on a hot streak and you never know.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Just in case anyone was counting on our buddy J.D. (don’t call me Chad) Durbin to make a triumphant return to the bigs – AAA, 1.0 IP, 7H, 8R, 7ER, 2BB, 1K
He certainly is the Real Deal…
August 1st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Similar to how the Rockies got on hot streak last year. Unfortunately talent always wins out and the Rocks got rolled in the WS.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
AHAHAHAHHAHA. you fucking arrogant assholes deserve every bit of this. we dont need a number 2 starter, we dont need an elite hitter, we dont need a setupman. HAHAHHA
now youre only great starter has been TERRIBLE his last two times out. get fucking hamels out of there right now. terrible. maybe he is hurt. and if hes hurt their season is alreayd over. assholes. thats why you go get shit done. because you cant rely on one or two guys all year. if there wasnt anyone to get then rebuild. trade some of your own big major league assets in areas you have great depth in.
i hope they at least make the playoffs, but good luck assholes. time to start playing baseball, major leage baseball
August 1st, 2008 at 9:40 pm
because this cardinals team isnt going near the playoffs and theyre owning our asses
August 1st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
meanwhile, my beer tonight: leinenkugels wheat beer variety pack…AWESOME
August 1st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
CZ: I remember when JD said that. I thought “man this kid thinks he’s great”. he threw that CG against the Padres and got us a good win against the Mets but thats about it. He struggled hard, saw him in Clearwater this year in Spring Training and he looked awful.
Geoff: well said. Don’t put it all on one starter as I said earlier. What can Gillick do now since he is a big Waiver guy. Good luck. I love this team but they make no moves!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 1st, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Geoff try the Leinekugel Summer Shandy, it’s awesome.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:47 pm

August 1st, 2008 at 9:47 pm

August 1st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
the variety pack has honey weiss, berry weiss, summer shandy and something else.
PLEASE RESIGN PAT BURRELL, thank you pat for listening, thank you for being a professional….
August 1st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
I kept pushing the idea of Manny and Harden but found very few with like thoughts. Most called me an idiot. Sure Manny’s a pain and Harden’s hurt a lot but why not shoot for the stars. If it didn’t work the Phils will be no worse than where they’ll be in October – out on the back nine.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Ok, so I guess they hit the snooze before the game or something because it appears an alarm has gone off now…
August 1st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Fred I would have loved Harden. True he’s hurt but that’s nothing new to the Phils. Kid is awesome and they will enjoy the WS because of him. Not saying they will win it, but I predict they will be there.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:53 pm
i hope the phils come back from this one. It would be a huge win.
But I know I can’t be the only one here that wasn’t shocked that once again, against a playoff contender, Cole can’t keep the ball in the park and has shit the bed. God, it’s getting old watching this.
Pitch like an ace, and win a big game at some point this year, Cole? Please?
August 1st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Scot Cold has pitched like an ace several times this year. I posted before that he does look off tonight, and he is prone to giving up homers but without him we are not in first.
August 1st, 2008 at 9:55 pm
*Cole, not Cold.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I have a curious question to you Phillies fans…
How many of you watch the Phillies outside of Philadelphia? If you do, do you use MLB.TV / MLB Audio, MLB Extra Innings, you bought the Comcast Channel on your Satelite service, or use phillies.com?
August 1st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Where’s Joe Cowley when you need him?
August 1st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
This game blows. The offense is so maddening.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
The Mets game isn’t much better.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Not looking too good.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Who cares about the fucking Mets? How about one nice showing from the offense against Lohse? How many men are they going to leave on base?
August 1st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Your big guns didn’t capitalize. That’s it.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
That piece of shit Burrell’s two-run shot doesn’t count I suppose.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Look at what Howard did today. I won’t get on your case because my Mets left the bases loaded with no outs in the 7th. I think all three NL East leading teams will lose tonight.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Heilman choked again! Let’s go Cards!
August 1st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
2 run Madson is at it again.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Looks like youre right, david. All three teams are so incredibly flawed sometimes it is hard to know what to think.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Yea, the Phils didn’t need to make a trade.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Kyle,
An NL Central team will make it to the World Series; Cubs? Your bullpen is solid, though! Our bullpen is disgusting; truly atrocious! The only flaw I see with your team is its lack of clutch hitting and pitching. It’s a mental flaw, and not a form of incompetence like the Mets’ bullpen.
I’m watching the Dodgers game to see how Manny, wearing the number 99, does in his L.A. debut.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
David,
Look at the Cubs rotation:
Zambrano, Dempster, Harden and Lilly.
I would take Harden and Zambrano over any of our pitchers. SO yes, I think the Cubs are clearly the best team in the national league.
The Phillies’ offense is too inconsistent. Sure the pitching is mediocre, yes the bullpen is fantastic, but too many strikeouts and not enough productive outs which has been pointed out on this sight many times.
August 1st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Coste back to AAA
August 1st, 2008 at 11:00 pm
The upside is that we play the Nationals 9 more times! That, I like. In the end, though, we still need to beat good teams. Right now, we just aren’t doing enough of that.
The Mets and the Marlins have enough talent and flaws which is why the three teams are so bunched together. Each team gives you flashes of brilliance and then maddening failure.
August 1st, 2008 at 11:28 pm
i hope everything is alright with hamels, he hasen’t looked good in the last couple starts.
August 1st, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Hey David, I noticed in your question about who’s watching/listening to the Phillies game and where, you asked if anyone bought the comcast channel on their satellite. We have DirecTV satellite, but also have to carry our local Blue Ridge cable up here in Lancaster county just to get Comcast for Phillies, Flyers, Eagles postgame, etc. Didn’t think it was possible to get this channel on satellite. If it is , we could save 45 bucks or so a month, so if you know please post.
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:16 am
KM,
One thing I noticed with Hamels, if he has a bad start he ususally has another one. Then he’s his old self again. It’s a little more worrisome because they were both extra piss poor starts from him these past two. I’m not worried really. When it’s hot and humid, it’s really not pitching weather. As good as Lohse was, it was getting the better of him too. Sometimes you just have to suck these outings up.
My thoughts are, he’ll be fine. He is without a doubt the ace of our staff. I just hope Moyer stays healthy and the the rest of the rotation keeps us in the game.
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:17 am
Btw, I’m giving the Jeltz Award to Madson.
August 2nd, 2008 at 1:38 am
if hamels is injured for any significant length of time then the phillies deserved it because of the bad karma they generated by arrogantly failing to get the elite SP they needed. yes, thats karma coming back to bite them in the ass.
i hope hamels is healthy otherwise theyre going to waiver-trade for bronson arroyo, just watch.
August 2nd, 2008 at 9:48 am
greg v,
hot and humid weather is what you get all summer, just about everywhere you go. hopefully cole can snap out of the funk, because it looks like the last few outings have been mental with him. i don’t think he is injured, but you never know.
i agree with you about the rest of the pitching staff thought. moyer has to stay healthy and productive, and the rest of the guys just have to keep it to less than 5 runs per start. i wouldnt mind locking up moyer for another year or two if possible.
August 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 am
i’d like to see the phillies take care of moyer until social security kicks in.
