Gamenight: Phillies (64-57) At Padres (47-74)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, August 15, 2008 08:01 PM

In what has become an absolute nightmare, the Phillies are on a boat without a paddle, in a car without brakes, on a plane without oxygen masks. The point is, the Phils are really in trouble. Tonight they begin a three-game set with the Padres. This blogger has/is taking today to step back from the Phils (as I think many of us really devoted to covering this team have done lately). You can find me sipping on a margarita in Mystic, Conn, tonight.

Splits and storylines don’t matter. What matters is a win.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (10-7) 3.81 ERA
Padres: Greg Maddux (6-8) 4.12 ERA

Gametime: 10:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 71, fair
Lineup:

MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday

Your gamenight beer: While I’m drinking margaritas, you can have Girardin Faro 1882. This rare German specialty bubbles. What else is rare? A Phillies win, lately. They’ll need it tonight, so seek this one out and enjoy it with some hot dogs and kraut. Mmm, grill food.

Go Phillies!

  1. Greg V. Says:

I love the old school pitchers duels. Moyer vs. Maddux should be a fun game. A fun game is what we need, but even more so, we need a win.

  2. NEPA Says:

I’m taking a nice night away from the Phils tonight. Going to see Step Brothers, I’ve heard some good things. Hopefully I’ll be back in time to catch the end of the game, if its even worth it. Go Phils.

  3. Fred Says:

    Quiet tonight.

  4. Kyle Says:

I love me some Jaimie Moyer. What a story.

  5. Fred Says:

Also another quiet night for the Phils’ bats.

  6. Kyle Says:

Ya, I am breaking my own rule, but I hope there are no posts until the Phillies score multiple runs. Boycott. It’s pathetic.

  7. Mickey D Says:

    Ghost town.

  8. nate Says:

“Meanwhile, Carrasco (1-1) threw 113 pitches in his six innings, allowing two runs (including the first earned run in his three Triple-A starts) on five hits.

He struck out eight but walked four, and hit a batter, committed a balk and uncorked a wild pitch.”

  9. CT Says:

    thank you Pat!

  10. Matt Says:

Jamie Moyer needs to be the anchor in this rotation next year. I love watching him pitch, he is the Phillies. He is what they should be.

  11. Geoff Says:

very nice outing by jamie. im sittin back enjoying a magic hat # 9 enjoying this good pitching performance. hitting: not so good

  12. Geoff Says:

that was some good old school old man pitching for a while. nothing like it.

  13. MA Phanatic Says:

just came home from a cookout, expecting to see the Phils with a nice lead on Maddux. Boy was I sorely mistaking…

  14. Geoff Says:

are they scared to use lidge again? i knew something was screwy as soon as they said “rich dubee fixed his mechanics.”

  15. Geoff Says:

theyd better break him out in the 9th

  16. That Guy Says:

Moyer always rises to the occasion. He has a good awareness of the total team storyline. He always pitches a gem when we need it the most. He is sort of like Geoff Jenkins except that Moyer is a below average hitter and Jenkins is a far below average hitter.

  17. MA Phanatic Says:

    wow…so that’s what it takes to get a win nowadays? a 1-0 shutout..yikes.

thank god though we got a win.

  18. NEPA Says:

Looks like I didn’t miss much on here or with the game. At least it’s a win, but all the same problems are still there.

  19. MA Phanatic Says:

yeah NEPA you said it. Offense seems to have left their game on the East coast.

  20. Geoff Says:

i feel better now that lidge looked fine.

  21. Phil Says:

I took another night off from the Phillies. This time I just went to go see a show nothing stupid like last night haha. Tomorrow night I have a double at work, so I’ll be missing the game again. Sunday, I’ll probably miss the game too cause of work. I’ll get home in time for the 7th or so, but regardless I just want to take a long break from this team. To those of you who doubted me when I said Moyer is our best big game pitcher, do you believe me yet?

  22. Geoff Says:

well yeah, the guy has like 250 wins. theres no way that you can be a fraud or a choker if you have that many wins. if he wins a championship or gets to 300 hed be a good case for the hall of fame.

  23. Phil Says:

He probably won’t get to 300 unless he pitches till he’s 50 and wins 12+ games a year. I want him in a Phillies uniform next year as a starting pitcher.

  24. Geoff Says:

yeah he wouldnt be bad. they still need an insanely awesome dude at the top of the rotation. cole wont be that guy for 2 more years so we need one of those now. or…they could rebuild for when cole is ready, assuming hes locked up then. by then i hope theyve rebuilt the offense.

  25. Phil Says:

Honestly, I think we should listen to Rollins and stop booing Ruiz and Bruntlett before they come to the plate. They aren’t Utley, Howard, Burrell, etc. They are a utility guy and a poor hitting catcher. Now they have added pressure because they’re getting booed and they know if they don’t get a hit they’re fucked. This is a tough town to play in if you’re not an all-star type player. It’s not like they’re going up there and not trying. Jimmy, he should be booed for not trying. I hope he means what he said in his rebuttle. It’ll show he is a team leader and maybe he has been playing with an injury or some shit. I hope that maybe the statement can be built on by the fans and the team and we can turn this season around for the better. Our underachieving is killing us. We should be the 2nd best team in the nL.

  26. Geoff Says:

heres the thing. there is something to the negative energy thing. however, if you cant handle that then dont play pro sports. are they that mentally feeble that they cant get over it? they have to overcome the negative energy with their own positive confident energy. when they do that and perform well they will have overcome those problems.

  27. Geoff Says:

i saw a little bit difference tonight. charlie called them all out and challenged their manhood in the media last night. good job by him, i thought it was appropriate. i mean, what else is there left to try? im suire hes already flipped tables over.

  28. Phil Says:

Geoff, do me a favor. Look at the teams road/home splits. Only our star players hit better at home. I’m pretty sure there’s a reason for that. We shouldn’t be getting all over our good defensive 8 hole hitting catcher before he even comes to the plate. I do say get all over Rollins for not running out a ground ball and Utley for looking like a deer in head lights at the plate. You know what they’re capable of. When this team was putting up 6 runs a game last year, were we bashing Nunez? No…we’d say he was a great defensive 3B. FYI Ruiz has been hitting a little better lately. As for Bruntlett, he’s a utility guy. Does he deserved to get booed for filling in for an injured reigning MVP. Obviously Bruntlett is no Rollins, so don’t expect his production.

  29. Geoff Says:

i understand all that but when do they run out of excuses? this seasons theme is no excuses, and yet, from top to bottom the organization has failed to do the things it needs to to win a championship. at each juncture, there has been an excuse. even if its a good excuses. we didnt get this guy, we couldnt get that guy we wanted to do this, the play didnt work out the way it was supposed to, etc. but, all along the way, failure to live up to expectations has been the theme. that has to stop now or else the season will have been a failure, and one giant excuse.

  30. sean Says:

I’m not in the philly area this week, I’m on vacation in the carolinas and the media here has picked up on Manuel saying that this padres series is a serious test. If we do not step up now, “we are not champions or men.” I love hearing that from Charlie. I know some people get on him, like myself – I’ll never figure out why he pulls Burell in close games – but this team needs a kick in the ass and that was a start.

  31. GM-Carson Says:

Please help me spread the word on Campaign Cheer.

  32. KM Says:

    1 run . . . really?

  33. Ryan Says:

A win is a win KM

  34. KM Says:

yea, a win is a win, but this pitching is not good enough to win on 1 run a night. they were lucky last night, with moyer pitching so well, but tonight kendrick goes at it, and i can guarantee 1 run, 2 runs or even 3 runs won’t do it.

  35. Phil Says:

Kendrick is going to have a field day pitching in San Diego.

  36. Jamie Says:

Phil, I agree…as long as he can keep the ball down (and have an ump who actually has a “normal” and fair strike zone).

  37. Phil Says:

Hamels should have more of a field day too. It’ll be tough for him to let up the long ball in San Diego.
