Gamenight: Phillies (65-58) At Padres (48-75)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, August 17, 2008 06:21 PM
Kyle Kendrick stunk; the Phillies offense stunk as much. Put it together and you have an 8-3 loss to the Padres. Now the Phils face losing two of three to San Diego and, thus, pushing their deficit in the NL East back to three games. The Mets defeated the Pirates today, with Johan Santana pitching a three-hit shutout. Awesome, right?
Come On, Cole: The Phillies will turn to Cole Hamels to stop the skidding. He desperately needs his 10th win of the season. Last time out he got barely any run support, the bullpen blew the game, and the Phils lost to the Dodgers.
Hometown Hamels: Tonight, of course, Cole pitches on a national stage in his hometown of San Diego. There he ihas a 2.84 ERA in 12.2 innings.
Young James: Jimmy Rollins is 4-for-26 during the West Coast road trip.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (9-8) 3.32 ERA
Padres: Cha Seung Baek (4-7) 5.20 ERA
Gametime: 8:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 76, sunny
TV: ESPN
Lineup: Rollins/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Dobbs/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gamenight beer: A nationally televised game, so everyone in the country can see how horrible the Phillies offense performs. Seriously, they’re going up against some guy named Baek, so look for like a run. Drink hard tonight. Go with The Reverend by Avery Brewery in Colorado. This 10 percent alcohol content beer is one of those Quadrupels, a strong Belgian-style beer rich with malts. So eat some barbecue with it tonight — maybe some beef brisket or something of that ilk. Just drink a lot — it could be a long night.
Go Phillies!

This might be the most important game of the season. If we get embarassed on national TV no one will take us seriously
August 17th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
How long before Jon and Joe talk about Jrolls comments?
August 17th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
When is a good time for the booing to be acceptable? Jroll asked for the fans to boo poor fundamentals and lack of effort – I would consider 14 Ks all of the above along with the dismal hitting. I know there is an idea for everyone to cheer but this has been some of the most pathetic offense EVER!
August 17th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
i feel ike we get embarassed every time we’re on national tv. does anyone know our record in nationally televised games?
August 17th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Joshua-I think they’ll mention Jimmy’s comments as soon as he comes up to bat in the 1st inning.
Richie Allen- hockey sucks? Are you one of those people that can’t follow the puck?
August 17th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Georgie– and then they’re gonna continue for the rest of the game about it. they’re so annoying.
August 17th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Poor fundamentals and lack of effort……..hey that sounds like you JRoll?!?!?!?!
I will not watch the game tonight eventhough I only get to see the Phils 20 times a year. I cant take John and Joe when the Phils are going well……….
Instead I’m going to watch “The Notebook” with my wife on the Hallmark Network……why?!!……b/c it is more uplifting than watching this team and their pseudoleadership.
August 17th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
That last part was a joke BTW.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
according to joe morgan you can’t win if you can’t score runs…thanks for the info, joe.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Last time the Phils were on ESPN I watched the game on mute. I think I’ll listen tonight, might need some comic relief via Joe Morgan.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
I know he got on there but what was Jimmy swinging at??
August 17th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Joe Morgan is hilarous… Would love to hear him commentate on little league, this guy ‘knows’ baseball
August 17th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
If my team wore those uniforms I think I’d kill myself.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
The kind of run they hadn’t scored in like two months.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
BTW, Deadspin’s live blog has a Bingo card for the game. Play along.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Jon Miller just said it’s amazing Utley has his numbers, especially as he hits second most of the time.
He’s hit second in SIX games this season.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
JOn Miller is the worst play by play announcer in ALL of baseball. hes worst than some of those retard nfl announcers, and i hate the nfl so tahts pretty hard to accomplish. those are THE worst uniforms in baseball. those piss yellow alternate A’s throwbacks are better than these.
another thing, greg dobbs is horrible as an everyday player, absolutely worthless.
“you have to give them credit for not chasing pitches out of the strike zone, but hes going to need some help if hes going to get through this game.”
well, joe. the phillies are giving him help. dobbs and ruiz just swing at garbage back to back. dobbs at the first pitch. sounds like he actually is somewhat prophetic in that instance.
but joe, theyre not supposed to swing at pitches out of the strike zone. little leaguers dont even do that all too much, but the phillies do.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
theyre actually right about the speed thing. i kind of think the padres are trying to build a contact hitting speed team but they havent gotten enough pieces to be consistent. i have a speed guy that they could use….J-Roll! give me heath bell and some of their starting pitching prospects, and chase headley, and well call it even.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
What a inning in the field by Utley, the guys really stepped up his D this year.
Let’s not get down on Ruiz off the bat, his hit better in the last week.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
i think hamels also needs to grow a beard to look more “menacing” to hitters
August 17th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Wonder how many of Rollins out have been made 1-1…
August 17th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
all too many i imagine. cha seung baek is slop, they need to mash on this guy.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Joe Morgans officially lost all credibility… The Jays making it out of that division… Not gonna happen this year…
August 17th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
A Rolly Fingers beard or a Giambi?
August 17th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
HAHA, that play was awesome.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
dude, that was so funny. he tries to put it back together! hahaha
August 17th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
joe morgan must have handlers like a politician, because hes so inulated from reality.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
haha, miller is like “oh wow, and giles has fallen through the outfield door” and morgan just chirps in with “foul ball”
August 17th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
How in the name of God can Ryan Howard have a an OBP of %.321????? That’s disgusting. What happened? He swings at EVERYTHING!; can’t hit for average, can’t move a runner, can’t throw to second on a force, can’t field PERIOD, has the range of a four foot cast net. If you don’t get a pitch to hit, WALK! Burrell’s hitting right behind you. Damn, I’m angry at him.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
I think Joe Morgan’s Charles Barkelys primary political advisor.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
dude, this guy isnt even a good pitcher. hes horrible. he couldnt stay in the starting rotation of SEATTLE!
August 17th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
You look at Chase and he may not been 100% but you can see he’s seeing the ball but Howard’s not, he’s not indentifying pitches so he’s just hacking in an area of the zone.
Could be worse, Brian Bannister must be walking around with the biggest headache tonight.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
So Geoff what kind of beard should Cole grow?
August 17th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
joe morgan LOVES talking about people hips.
August 17th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
like a dan haren beard.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Those Padres uniforms are a gimmick and are basically dedicated to the Armed Services and San Diego is a MAJOR Naval base and has Navy recruit training.I’m not particularly thrilled with gimmicks with Uniforms (See the Martian Mets) but they do look good and fit the area they play in……Plus San Diego is a fine town.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Now that’s what you call seeing the pitch and going with it…
August 17th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
jon miller has the worst shirt/tie combo ive ever seen
August 17th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
so far on the bingo sheet we have at least barry bonds, the yankees being done or not, and tony gwinn. also, gotta love the audible “lets go phillies” chants in san diego.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
is his shirt as bad as Joe Morgan’s analysis? I think by that logic Jayson Werth’s headed straight into that wall because it’s only the home outfielders who know the nooks and cranies who don’t run stright into the outfield wall…
sorry to the HOF but WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT!
August 17th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Great catch by Vic, he makes that shit look so easy.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
look at jimmys numbers. theyre horrible. he dogged out another grounder there. again, jimmy, its time to go..
August 17th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Come of Geoff he’s shown up tonight even if his bat hasn’t which is a nice change…
August 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
nope, gotta go, sorry. half the shortstops in baseball are no better or worse than his defense. if youre over 95 percent fielding then it really doenst matter.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
If only we knew what was going on with Jimmy…
Hate to taint the lead but still no sustain offense again tonight and the Padres are still in the game, that’s not gonna cut it against the Mets/Dodgers/Cubs/Brewers who can turn it on if their close in a game.
How about a Sal Fasano for Cole? Nothing more intimidating than a handlebar…
August 17th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
“Luuuke, feel the force.” haha, good one jon miller
August 17th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
can someone please tell me when is Ryan Howard going to work on his swing with the change up… I know it’s not just him with these pitches, but I feel like every pitcher’s got his number with that throw…. Meanwhile, thank you Pat Burrell
August 17th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
The Bat baby.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Again lets get the re-sign Pat chants back… He’s matured so much in the past couple of years.
Howards swing is just ugly now, he’s got it in his mind where he’s swinging and he isn’t adjusting to the location of pitches, he looks thoroughly unprepared and I wonder how much time he’s spending in the film room because you can’t be that much out front or not recognise pitching paterns if your going out there schooled up.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
if their system wasnt so barren they could absorb letting burrell walk, but they really cant afford it.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Get Milt Thompson to earn his keep and get on him about the swing…. He’s got the ability, but I can’t watch another game with that 2 strike, change up, & strike out… We’ll have no post if he can’t work it out… Trying to be the supportive fan, but I can’t take the slump excuse anymore!!
August 17th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
its beyond slump. its bene like this all season.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
If the Phils had a better drafting ethic we could absorb loosing Burrell if it was necessary by shifting Werth to left, putting Vic back in right and Golson in centre but he doesn’t have the plate discipline and I don’t see him going any further than Costanzo did in this organisation.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
When your entire offense is slumping, Chase has to come up with that ball and get Hamels in the dugout.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
when you see the pattern like that, its epidemic and you need massive changes to fix it. if the players cant fix it then they cant be here. if the coach cant fix it the coach cant be here.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
then because they cant get out of it it automatically costs them a run
August 17th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Note the run support for Cole again… three RISP in 6 innings with a single sac fly and solo shot doesn’t cut the mustard in a pennant race.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
It’s more complicated, we draft more tools guys than baseball savvy prospects so their not coachable in the way a guy like Braun is. Maximising their skills is what the organisation seems to prioritise about baseball fundementals.
It’s irrelevant shaking your head at a guy like Costanzo (who should have been playing everyday 3rd base with the Phils by now) because his plate selection is so poor when you’ve drafted the guy thinking you can teach a long swinger plate discipline. They’ve failed to cultivate Howards fundemental baseball skills and they will fail with Golson as they failed with Bourn.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
above^ baseball fundementals
August 17th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Our high-water mark of the season was 36-29. Since then, we are 26-32. We are a bad team, and we’re not going to the playoffs.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Every time Manuel feels like bringing in Taguchi to pinch hit, he should use Hamels instead. He significantly improves the teams chances of getting a runner on base, while Taguchi significantly improves the chances of making an out. Tell me where I’m wrong here.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Sorry, I meant 39-26.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
exactly. its ok to draft a few guys like that. but when you draft lots of guys like that, this is what you get.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
yeah i feel like they shouldve thrown golson into the mix at the deadline and maybe they couldve come up with a nady or bay type guy. knowing them, the pirates asked for golson, bastardo, and filler and the phillies refused patently because golson is a “cant miss” prospect.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Through all of the struggles I still felt as though this team would win the East. That confidence is going fast. I keep thinking the offense will magically turn it around and we will run away with the division. August is more than half way over and it still has not happened. Why can’t this team play up to their potential?

August 17th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
If your most successful recent 1st round picks were successul college players in Burrell, Utley and Hamels doesn’t that say something especially with current draft trends…
August 17th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
yeah it says in the first round you go college. its really obvious. if you wanna take a risk later in the draft or in the first round ONCE IN A WHILE its ok. but you need at least half of your players, probably more, to be college players in any particular draft.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
but the phillies dont like doing the obvious thing
August 17th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I couldn’t believe they sold low on Cardenas instead of going with Golson who’s value will drop unless he magically finds some discipline plus we have two identical guys in A ball in Brown and Berry. the FO also destroyed Outman’s value and writers have raved about Beane picking him up.
Funny you use the words can’t miss for Golson because he can miss… Regularly with two strikes on him and that’ll stop him getting to the majors.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Wade this year has proved he’s in a world of his own and Gillick plays to the beat of his own drum and the games changed since his hayday in the 90’s.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Just remember Luis Aguayo was can’t miss too. That’s why we gave the Cubs Ryan Sandberg instead. They really wanted Aguayo but he was “untouchable” because he was a can’t miss talent. What did he hit, .220?

August 17th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
If the Pads get another run and this joke of a offense doesn’t get Cole his 10th win I might need a long break from this team. Watching them actually depresses me.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I’m in England and we rarely get Phils games here so I’m obliged to watch and I can barely stand this, almost every game it’s just waiting for the other shoe to drop…
August 17th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
yeah gillick is way outdated. my thinking with the scoutking and internal development angle is that, even if amaro is the worst GM ever, hell probably be better than gillick at drafting players because hes newer. i still dont think he should be our gm.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
even if they win, they went 2-5 on a huge road trip that they needed to go 4-3 on. its just disgraceful. 2-5 wont get it done.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
I’ve counted 4 hard hit balls tonight of of that rag arm ass starter. Either they need new players or new cocahces becuase this group has no clue. Howard swings at a ball over his head after Utley walks on 4 pitches, then he takes two FB down the middle. I mean Steve Jeltz and crew were better offensivily than this bunch. They suck.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
see, like what was that? do that at all in this situation?
August 17th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
IDK what will happen, but I’m going to go ahead and say this was a mistake to pull Cole. The guy has thrown 98 pitches? I got a bad feelin.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
I’m not so sure, Cole leaves strong and you have to believe that Lidge will close it out.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
dude, let your closer finish it. hamels has been abused more than any other starter this year. theres no reason at all to let him go another inning. if lidge cant do it then its lidges problem.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
You have the bottom of the lineup up. If you dont need your closer then you dont use your closer. In this case you dont need him. Cole was shut down tonight. I’m just saying…..I dont want to criticize after the fact.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Take your point Gavin but the way things have gone for Cole Charlie has to manage his confidence. Lidge closing it out here to give Cole the win might just be a turning point.
That slider is just as nasty as it gets…
August 17th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
you let him him finish it if he has a shut out. if he is at 98 pitches with 1 run then there kind of isnt really a reason to make him throw any more.
August 17th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Glad I was wrong.
Boy this team has a long way to go. Good night.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
That was a really good confidence builder for both Hamels and Lidge. Utleys defense really won that game and Jimmy made a couple of really good throws to keep the base runners off and keep things simple for Cole.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Well the whole country got to see how lousy our offense has become but thankfully our pitching was solid! I was rather intrigued by Hamels throwing more contact pitches tonight! Interesting performance from the man tonight.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Just like the first game of the series, its a win (and we’ll take it) but all the same problems are still there. If we’re not playing the Pads tonight, we lose this game no doubt.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
hope that helps. they need this day off tomorrow. theyd better come tuesday focused and ready to go on a rampage for the rest of the season. there really isnt anymore room for error. a few more blown games and it coul cost them the season if the mets continue winning and dont collapse.
August 18th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Reading back over NJ’s comments, I believe that he has nailed the problem. They draft and sign the same kind of player. The long ball looks great on highlight films and Baseball tonight, but if you watch a team for an entire season you can see the missed opportunites to win games is not the inablility to hit homers but the number of times the Phils fail to put the ball in play. In addition to the strikeouts, their lack of bat control to advance runners or to score men from third with less than two outs.
We are witnessing the consequences of a personel policy that tried to match the player to the ball park. (Notice that the Phillies offensive numbers are better away from Citizens. Could it be that everyone is trying to hit it out?) As a result, we have clones of the same type of player. Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Werth, Ruiz? and Rollins when he is bad (and he is really bad this year). Look at the Angels for a model of how a team with a mixed offense and good pitching can thrive. We have the good pitching but unfortunately our mix is very, very bad.
