Gamenight: Phillies (73-60) At Cubs (83-50)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, August 28, 2008 06:00 PM
Headline: The need for a split starts tonight
The Major Players: Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, Aramis Ramirez, Fabio Castro
The Venue: Wrigley Field, Chicago
The Number: 0.5 games behind (Mets)
The Phillies split with the Mets, so we’re back at square one. Of course. Tonight a huge four-game set with the Cubs begins. The Cubs are the best team in the National League, by record, and should prove to be an incredibly hard test for the Phightins. The Phils took two from the Cubs back in April at Citizens Bank Park.
Curious Cub: Ryan Dempster is a crazy case. Between 1998 and 2003 he started, and had a 3.66 ERA in 2000. Other than that season, he has been pretty horrible as a starter. But this year? A 2.85 ERA.
Demp Yard: A few Phillies have hit Dempster well. Jimmy Rollins is .444 in nine at bats and Eric Bruntlett has a home run in two bats against Dempster.
Cole Snap: Cole Hamels has pitched twice in Wrigley Field. His numbers: 10 IP, 5.43 ERA.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (11-8) 3.20 ERA
Cubs: Ryan Dempster (15-5) 2.85 ERA
Gametime: 8:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 76, cloudy
Lineup:
MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday
Your gamenight beer: My good friend and beer God recommended to me Creme Brulee Stout from the Southern Tier company. He said it wipes out dessert for a whole week, and goes best after chicken and fries. Clearly a dessert drink, it’s made for slow sipping, so enjoy it if you can tonight with Cole on the hill.
Go Phillies!

That beer sounds delicious. I have to get a case.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
It’s Yuengling tonight, and a lot of it.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
ewwww…. dessert beer? sounds like something a fruitcake from queens would drink while tailgating a mets game.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
It’s time for Hamels to toe the rubber.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I just got done writting the trip intinerary for Monday’s game in Washington…
…it’s going to be a great time.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
howdy guys!
August 28th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Per Jayson Stark of ESPN:
• Out like a Lamb: We’re hearing that Mike Lamb, just designated for assignment by the Twins, has told his old buddies in Houston he’d love to play in Philadelphia. And with the Phillies still hunting for a left-handed bat off the bench, they clearly would be interested. One big question is whether the Phillies (or anyone else) would try to trade for Lamb or just wait until the Twins release him. He can’t be released until next week, meaning he wouldn’t be eligible for postseason play. But because he already has cleared trade waivers, he could be dealt at any time.
What you guys think of that?
August 28th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Rob – I wish I was going to that. I was hoping Phillies Nation would do something like that the past few months, now I’m back at school out of state.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
We try to do something later in the season because it’s actually easier to get more people to attend and get everything paid off. Last year we did out trip in the begining of August I believe. But next year we will definitly look into something for around that same time, pending the schedule and all. Maybe a NY trip to check out the new stadium? If that’s even going to be possible with the already anticipated sell outs for the ‘09 Mets. But, we have MLB ticket connections all over the place so if there are tickets to be got, we will get them.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
The philies have a good chance tonight if rich dubee doesnt interfere again. he cost them last nights game. again..
mike lamb..eh. whatever. experienced bat off the bench i guess…couldnt hurt. not a geat help. but cheap veterans dont hurt down the stretch.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Yea, that would be a good time.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Rob/Tim/Brian,
You guys ever think about doing a get together or something down in Florida for Spring Training? I was down there two years ago and it was an absolute blast – I think we went to 11 games in 7 days (some day games followed by night games), and with hotels, rental cars, airfare, tickets, etc. it was like $1300 per person. Tickets were only about $160 apiece for the 11 games – very cheap.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
I’m absoloutley gutted i can’t go too, living in england sucks balls when you follow american sports. Staying up till the early hours to see the Phillies lose guarantees the next day sucks.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Big series here, let’s go Hamels!
Go Phils!
August 28th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Fred – you my friend, are the definition of fan.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I think the Cubs announcers just jinxed Dempster. They just said he hasn’t given up a home run in his last 9 starts. Oops…
August 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Oh well…..get the ULTIMATE in “Homers” tonight on the XM .Phils vs Cubs on “The Pat and Ron show” I don’t know who’s worse of a homer….Larry Anderson or Ron Santo.I do hope the Phils win tonight because I have Hamels on my fantasy team and can use wins.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
How big would like a double here be by Feliz, I can only hope.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Runners LOB will hurt us in this series, What the F*ck Feliz. Half ass swing, even if he did make contact where was that going? It was a groundout for sure.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Ron Santo for sure. Larry Anderson is sweet – he calls it like it is and lets the umps, Charlie, or anyone else that has it coming have it.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Oh Pedro why’d you swing !?! Dempster couldn’t find the zone and he let him off by not taking those last 2 pitches. Ah well a leads a lead, and Hamels has something to work with from the start.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Oh Baby, Cole is on tonight.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Strrrrrrrike 3 !
August 28th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I wish I was able to see this game tonight, it looks like King Cole’s stuff is working hard.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Good catch by Utley to end the inning, although I’m not sure what happened with the play before that where he went the wrong way
August 28th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Yeah his instinct took him the exact wrong way.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Paint them corners Cole.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Good work Cole. He’s on tonight
August 28th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
God, I hate not being able to see Hollywood on his game tonight.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Pat the Bat, clutch again. GIDP.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Burrell is really killing us, I would have given him the night off tonight.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Burrell is so, so bad at the moment.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
NEPA, get the MLB.tv or were you the one that lived too close?
August 28th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Looks like Hamels is gonna have to be pretty awesome tonight, Dempster looks like he’s settled down after a shaky start.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
No, I always get it in the beginning and end of the school year. I’m actually getting it tomorrow. I wanted to make sure that I get all the way up to the final game of the season.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
mlb.tv is amazing. Shame you can’t choose the announcers you get though
August 28th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Yea, I love mlb.tv, except for the first time I got it I didn’t realize they keep charging you. So I paid for a full summer without realizing it.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
I hate subscriptions which automatically renew. Even when you try to stop, you can’t find out how too etc., just a pain in the arse basically to have to ring up/email someone to stop sometihng
August 28th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Cole is fire right now.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Yea, they actually had a checkbox for automatic renewal and I said No, and they still did it. Who knows.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I was at that Millwood no-no… Wierd I was just talking about it.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
“ryan Says: wwww…. dessert beer? sounds like something a fruitcake from queens would drink while tailgating a mets game.”
A bit resentful, no? That’s worse than seeing Feliz swinging at first pitches.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Fairly quick game, no?
August 28th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Damn leaving runners on base.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
hey, I’m from Queens and drink while tailgating before mets games, I just happen to wear Phillies gear!
I got tix to the US open next Friday during the day, and then the Muts vs. Phils on Friday night. I’m doing the doublheader….in my Victorino jersey!!!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Tim, I have a beer recommendation, you might have already heard of this but Little Kings Cream Ale from Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Bare,PA. It comes in small 7 oz. bottles which is pretty unique, but it has a nice smooth finish. And I feel like a giant putting away the small bottles one after another. Check it out if you haven’t heard of it.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Very quick. Good thing too, because i’m knackered. Think this may be my last inning, it’s 2 a.m
Good play by Howard, who’s D has improved noticably over the last week
August 28th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
hey Fred, you catch any EPL games over there? I’m thinking of heading to London this year to catch a Spurs match at White Hart Lane.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
That’s a nice day of sports Griffin. Me and my dad are coming over for the friday and saturday game in NY then getting the train down to philly for the eagles game and the first marlins game, then it’s back to england
August 28th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Yeah i’m a big west ham fan, so usually get to about 6 or 7 games a year, including the west ham-spurs game. Usually good games since it’s quite a fierce rivalry.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Wow, you ARE a fan. Good for you. Best of luck on the trip and I hope the Phils and the Iggles make your trip worth it! Now get some sleep and hopefully you’ll get good news in the morning!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Through 4 innings. Very impressive line for Hamels right now.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
yeah, Spurs-west ham is a big game. Unfortunately I predict mid-table mediocrity for both of us…as long as Spurs beat West Ham and the Arsenal scum, then I’ll be happy…
August 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
oh, I forgot to mention Chelski…
August 28th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
tom mccarthy = inappropriate
August 28th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Lol yeah baseball tonights taping so i’ll put that on when i get up. Thanks, good luck with your quest to see a premier league game, although I can’t say I approve of your choice of team
see y’all tomorrow night
August 28th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Mie T. – What did he say, im watching Step Brothers on my laptop while having the game on mute.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
haha, night Fred! let’s go Phils!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
just calling out older fans, and then saying, “oh yeah, that’s more like it” as the camera pans to a younger blonde chick
August 28th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Sounds about right. C’mon Vic, slap a single.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
what did tmac say now
August 28th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Wow Vic, wow. Is it just me or did it look like he was taking that all the way then when the ball was at the plate he tried to hit it, just a bad sequence.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
damn
August 28th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Man, if we’re going to win this game, we need to capitalize with these RISP at least a couple of times.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Chances of the Cubs not scoring a run tonight, 0.5%. We’re gonna be looking back at our many opportunities and saying we should of pulled this one out
August 28th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Wow…that may have been the worst swing I’ve ever seen from a position player.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Yup, and now it starts. Cubs will put another on the board here, and we’ll be stuck holding our dicks in our hands because we can’t seem to get runners in. At least Dempster’s pitch count is high.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Well I’m headin out for the night. No way the Phils win tonight with this offense. Have a good night everybody.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
See ya NEPA. Have a good one.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
yeah, the Cubs are the highest scoring team in the league. Our offense is lost right now and we NEED to win this game b/c we’re not winning the last 2 of the 3 in this series.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
nice job by Cole there. “Let’s get some runs”
August 28th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
random question to everyone here. What team outside the NL East do you hate the most? For some reason, I hate the Cardinals.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Johhny Wacko.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I hate the Cardinals/Brewers. But they’re an afterthought really.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Yes, thank you Ruiz.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Rockies, Dodgers, Cardinals. Hate ‘em. Come on J-Hole!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Griffin, if the AL counts, Red Sox and Yankees. Can’t stand them.
Good Sac Fly. Much needed
August 28th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
This is good small ball.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Here we go offense, 4-1 off small ball.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
I like small ball. Now would be a good time for Burrell to snap out of the funk and put the nail in the coffin.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Can Pat keep this alive? A single to right puts Utley on 3rd, hopefully.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
This is run support that Cole starts have lacked.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
TJ, I’m more or less happy that they rebounded after giving up that run in the 5th. Answered with 3 runs.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
That was a big bounce back. I thoughts Burrell’s ball was out.
Hamels is tormenting Ramirez..
August 28th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Well Werth didnt need to dig into the wall at Wrigley for that ball, but I’m happy with the way this team is playing tnight
August 28th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I guess he just had a lapse in judgement with the ground rules as the visiting team in a stadium he rarely plays in.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
These balls are carrying alot, woudlnt be surprised to see Werth homer. Would be the icing on the cake.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Marshall has a dirty curve
August 28th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
cole is going good so far tonight
August 28th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Oh crap, get Madson out of there.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
get Madson out now…
August 28th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
God get Madson outta there now he’s so fucking horrible.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
goddamit – get him the fuck out of there now charlie
August 28th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I don’t know why Charlie pulled him so quickly.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I thought Madson was going to pull a “Myers” on Charlie.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
It’s about fucking time Charlie pulls him i would of pulled him after the home run…All Madson does is blow games these days.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
We’re heading for another 8th inning meltdown! Fuckin’ A!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Charlie Manual has been hitting all the wrong buttons the last 10 innings or so. ridiculous.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Stellar performance by Madson. I really don’t like not feeling good about our bullpen down the stretch…
August 28th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
How many times recently has the bullpen crapped the bed?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Things always turn to shit when I move over here to the computer chair. I’m going back to my recliner.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Like i said before Charlie sucks when it comes to deciding which pitchers to put in which situations…Like Lidge last night he should of never been in the game in that situation.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Twice against LA, MEts, Nationals and tonight. 5 times in 10 days the bullpen has blown the lead.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Bases loaded no outs. Wow.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
We have a bunch of long relievers and mop up guys! No set up pitchers! We’re losing this one.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Bases loaded no outs…Were fucked.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
can this guy throw a fuckin strike????
August 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
GOD FUCKING DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
HA HA HA HA HA PHILS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
OMG WTF!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Or a grand slam. hahaha. wow. this is redonkulous.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Dear Phillies fans,
Do you now feel empathetic towards us Mets fans with our shitty bullpen? It’s frustrating, right?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
And a fucking Grand Slam…Charlie you should of just left Cole in who cares how many fucking pitches he’s thrown.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
that’s fucking it. i’m so god damn done with the phillies this year. I can’t watch this shit no more.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
david go fuck yourself and die.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
How many of you guys are so tired of this fuckin pitch count shit?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Pitch counts never made sense to me. What difference does 10 more pitches make?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
NOW Charlie decides to come out. Don’t worry. You guys always “phight” back from any deficit. Calm down.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Is this the Mets comment section? Gees.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
go to hell david.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Yeah, having watched baseball for 35 years, it’s just recently that you hear about the freakin’ pitch count all the time.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
David…Go on a Mets board or get a fucking life it’s sad how the only thing you have to do is come on a Phillies board when their losing.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Madson is so rarely used in the 8th inning. Why use him there? Seriously?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Whatever happened to these guys throwing 150 pitches?!?! It’s as soon as you hit 100 pitches your out of there. Hamels DEFINITELY could’ve finished this inning.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Ya know, it is pretty lame to troll a rival team’s blog.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I’m a Mets fan but a baseball fan more than anything.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I really don’t understand why anyone on here pays attention to trolling Mets fans. Responding only adds wood to the fire. There are trolls on every team blog. The best policy is simply to ignore.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
well lets get ready for eagles season
August 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
If I were cole I’d be in the clubhouse fuming. What can you do? I mean they literally have to hope a starter goes 8, then Lidge for the 9th. Madson and Durbin are awful.
No way they make the playoffs – NO WAY.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Robin Roberts had 272 complete games. His arm is still there. It didn’t fall off. Sheesh, I hate pitch counts.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
It really didn’t used to be a big deal for a pitcher to go all 9 innings.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
durbin, romero and lidge are worn out its plain and simple charlie went to them to much but he didnt have a choice
August 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
worst loss of the year? I think it is. Cole goes 7 brilliant innings all for naught. There’s no way we’re winning 2 of the next 3, so we have to hope for 1 out of 4 which should bury us pretty good.
The bullpen was overachieving but they really made up for that the last two nights. Just disgusting.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
If this was 20 years ago Cole Hamels would’ve finished this game regardless and there wouldn’t be question about the Phillies winning.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
They are one of the least used pens in the league. Romero and Lidge are right in line with their career usages.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Also don’t forget that the Cubs are really freaking good…..
August 28th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
So Charlie please explain why you pinch hit for Cole when he is absolutely on fire where there is two outs and no one on in the top of the 8th…
To turn it over to Ryan “MadDog” Madson? Great idea Charlie real great
August 28th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
I’ve never been overly mpressed with Madson – he always follows up a good 2 inning performance with a shit one. He’s better suited for long relief or 7th inning at the latest. Durbin has been overused and is coming back down to earth. They could both use a change of scenery to a middle relief role to gain their stuff and confidence back – put Eyre in Durbin’s old role in the meantime since he’s at least pitching better – anyone for Christsakes. This was a game we could not afford to lose, and it went from 4-1 to 6-4 in less than 10 minutes thanks to that fuckhead Madson.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
but they are up every game and usually come in and its innings not apperances
August 28th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Why doesn’t Manual bring Eyre in? He’s more effective lately than Madson or Durbin???
August 28th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
look, the bullpen has gotten one out and given up 7 baserunners. I don’t want to hear about complete games, this one is on the bullpen.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
YES – LOOK AT THE INNINGS. Their bullpen has tossed the 3rd fewest in the ENTIRE LEAGUE. Lidge and Romero, in particular, have not been used nearly as much as they have for their careers. Durbin yes, but NOT Romero or Lidge.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
You know, I sort of agree with the Mets fan above. We’re bitching essentially over the same thing they bitch over when Santana pitches.
Nevertheless, at least it’s only 1/2 game tonight. 1 is better than 1.5.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
who’s hitting lead off next inning? No first pitch swings – be patient and get on base!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Yea our bullpen had to work alot in those 2 games against the Mets we needed Cole to go that 8th inning and give it to Lidge…These next 3 games are gonna be ugly because Blanton,Myers, and Moyer are likely to stuggle against an offense like the Cubs and our bullpen is outta gas.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Where is that idiot who blames these types of losses on Hamels. Surprised I haven’t hear from him.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
It’s top of the order
August 28th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Eyre has pitched the last two game i believe and two innings in each so he is most likely unavailable
August 28th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Oh ya, One T.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
this is the season this series becasue the mets have cupcakes in the marlins is beileve and we have the best team in the leauge. the rotation needs a guy to step up and give them a gem for a night to rest this pen.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
I thought JC was our set up man. Its the time of the season that these guys got to take their skirts off and step up. Why is Charlie treating these games like they don’t count. Manage these games to win instead of being afraid someboy might get tired. This is why you play all year for.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Ok, base hit. Need more.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
alright Jimmy!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Is JRoll stealing here? how is soto’s arm?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Utley never comes through in the clutch.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
joeyo manuel is stupid
August 28th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
man, phils could use somebody like kerry wood…throws strikes!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
utley is not clutch its as simple as that
August 28th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Welcome Back JRoll (You have been missed)
August 28th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Has Utley had a meaningful hit since June? I mean don’t get me wrong I would take him over any other second baseman but he hasn’t been exctly Mr. clutch for a while now.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Damnit. Gave that a good ride too.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
utley wow mvp canidate to worthless
August 28th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
What is Burrell’s BA over the last three games? .002?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
is something wrong with Utley? i’ve heard rumors he’s injured – anyone else?
now we’re really cooked, with burrell up.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
nice – first pitch, burrell sucks.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Utley’s ball would have been gone in our ballpark, but that ain’t really sayin much.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
utley is not hurt the pitchers learned to pitch to him and he has not adjusted
August 28th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Everyone loves to hate on Utley and call him not clutch yet you have no way to prove this at all. at least he hit it to the warning track much further than Howard’s got
August 28th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
they let that one get away. that was a win. they blew that one. damn it.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
utley never comes thru when it counts since april
August 28th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Yea i beginning to think it’s time to let Pat go,as long as the got a replacement in line that isn’t a “B-list”player because Pats starting to come back to life.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Ok, last night, I wasn’t really that angry. Disappointed, yes, but not heartbroken. Tonight…..I’m angry.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Oh well. As I said, still only 1 game. Of course, Chicago easily could turn it into 4, but that’s why they play them.
I wonder at what point Hamels loses it and flips on this team. He’s had a few bad games, but overall, this team has let him down far more often than he has let the team down.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
im pissed and no the phillies only replace players with b- list players
August 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
How have the pitchers adjusted to Utley? he has been around for 3+ years now? He was on fire in the beginning of the season and he has been playing with some kind of hip injury that he wont talk about
August 28th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
what an awful fucking game. 6 outs away tonite, 4 outs away last night…just when you thought maybe these guys figured it out, got last year’s mojo back – ALL FUCKING GONE NOW.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
I feel bad for Hamels.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
He went seven giving up a run, and Ryan “waste of skin” Madson can’t even record an out. He’s pathetic.
And Chases Ball would not have been a homerun in Philly. It’s 401 at CBP where he hit that.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
“b list” is going to be what Pat Gillick is most remembered for…
August 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
the pitchers jam utley in hard and then go away soft volquez of the reds pointed it out and they have been doing it to him all year. They jam him and pitch cornor to cornor
August 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
At least we only get the Cubs now. The Mets get them for 4 the last week of the season.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
by then its to late
August 28th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
the mets have a bullshit schedule though. we have the brewers and cubs left stil….
August 28th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Yeah but the last week of the season they may be resting by that point case they are so far ahead of everyone else.
Its hard to say they learned to pitch him when he was on base everytime but his last at bat. Take off your blinders he is still around or above most of his career numbers
August 28th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
chase utley is a carbon copy of scott rolen he is a streaking fielder just not a good fielder but who cares bout that he can light the world on fire for a month then go as cold as ice box
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
The Mets get the Brew Crew next week
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
the time is now to take the lead and pull away. go get a bat. give me mike labd, f it. a veteran bat. bring up some fresh youth and let them work into situations. see what happens. a fresh injection of youth coiuldnt hurt in the coming weeks.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
but again, it comes down to ownership. see how steinbrenner is spouting off on the Yankees, promising changes this summer? would that be the phils owner…oops, I mean ownerS – all 13? 14? of them…
seriously, how do you think those limited partners are feeling tonite…they don’t give a shit, they probably don’t even watch.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Yeah, I thought they signed Romero to be the setup guy, not just a lefty specialist. Just because a righty’s up Cholly doesn’t mean Romero can’t pitch to them. We get it- you know the difference between left and right. That’s about all you know.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
great we get them in 2 weeks
August 28th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
The Cubs will probably have already clinched by the time they play the Mets – a series which is at Shea, btw, where the Mets have a great record. None of this bodes well for us, especially with our bullpen looking like the 2007 bullpen.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
I tell ya….wright now as we speak,Cole Hamels has 2 things for Madsen and Durbin….a chip on his shoulder and a baseball bat in his hands. They totally imploded tonight. If this kind of stuff is going to snake bite the Phillies this weekend and the Amazins go down to Miami and get the Albatross fans to start rooting for those anchovies for next Sunday and finish them off once and for all.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I think that Pinella is too much of a gamer and has too much pride to sit back and rest them. And as we saw with the Rockies last year, layoffs can kill a baseball team’s momentum.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
You’re right Geoff! From September 9-22 they face nobody but the Braves and the Nats! FUCK IS THAT!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
the season is all up to the series at shea at the begining of the month which again hamels prob wont pitch but i think the mets starters will be sanatana fri, martinez sat and then perez sun nght
August 28th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
well, all i can say is if they dont make the playoffs they need major changes.
until then, im going sit back and relax and enjoy as much as i can…
August 28th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
This loss goes on Charlie plain and simple he knew our bullpen was outta gas,but chose to pull our ace who was pitching gem and hand it over to them.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
i want to make the playoff but if the phillies loose the series at shea put the nail in team for the year.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
The Mets and the Phils have basically the exact same schedule coming up. I dunno what everyone is complaining about. We have a comfortable stretch against the Nats and Atlanta to close out the season while they play the Cubs and Marlins. It’s sad that we’re thinking about schedules.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
thats what we face…im going to two of those last 6 games….
i have one of the brewers games, i hope its the sabathia game. its on saturday.
im going to get my tickets early next year. i didnt get in early enough to get a mets series game this year.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
i agree but the phillies are going to have play the matchup game if the mets play the brew crew and we play the braves we have to win the series or else the gap gets to big
August 28th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Other than Lidge, the bullpen is brutal. And while I don’t like Manual, what can you do if pitchers (Durbin, Madson, etc…) continue to shit the bed? And then every fifth start Kendrick goes 3 to 5 innings? It’s not like he can use Lidge for two every night.
Happ should be pitching right now, or very soon, in Kendrick’s spot. Use Romero exclusively in the 8th inning. I don’t give a flying fuck if right-handed hitters are coming up. That is all.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
And don’t discount Florida against the Mets this weekend. Florida has a chance to get right back into the race with a good series. You think they’re going to lay down?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
then we have to match them stride for stride to keep up
August 28th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Mitch Williams just said there’s no way he would have taken Hamels out of the game at that point.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
kk is not the answer and we learned that this season he is a nice guy and all but he isnt a starter in this leauge
August 28th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
trade jimmy rollins and ryan howard
August 28th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Yeah that’s right – throw Happ into the september pennant race fire. No thanks. Kendrick might be a mediocre pitcher, but at least he has been there before.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
woops, sorry about that. i liek kendrick but he needs to be remade in AAA next season and come back the following season….
August 28th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
i say go 4 man roatation
August 28th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
SJ Mike – I don’t think Florida is going to lay down, I just don’t think they are that good. And the Mets have handled them this year. Not as bad as they handled us, but close.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
If you mean going 2.2 innings in game 2 of last years NLDS, Christian, yes, Kyle Kendrick has “been there.”
August 28th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
kendrick will be ok for the stretch next year. but in the offseason ne needs to learn TWO new pitches and incease his arm strength and velocity. hell be a great 5th man if he can do that. im pulling for him, i like his style but he needs a little work
August 28th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
what happened to Geoff?
Is it depressing, living in a city that simply doesn’t win championships, at any level?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
i just watched a slow motion replay of the grand slam…WHAT A HORRIBLE PITCH BY DURBIN – anyone on the cubs would have hit that out. anyone on the hawaiian little league champs would have hit that out.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Tonight was just an awful loss. I am not sure how to describe it other than this: good teams do NOT lose a game with their ace on the mound with a 4-1 lead with six outs left. They simply don’t. I don’t care if Hamels or not. If you are a major leaguer, you should be able to get 3 outs without giving up 3 runs.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
another troll…LetsGoMets! go fuck yourself
August 28th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
um, dude. the pitchers arent CONDITIONED to go to a 4 man unit. if they were conditioned, like they were in the old days id be all for it, but you need 4 BIGTIME studs to do that nowadays. its about TRAINING AND CONDITIONING. preparation and so forth. you have to be CONDITIONED to throw more innings but pitchers now are conditioned to throw less innings.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Point taken, Kyle. It’s a tough situation. Kendrick basically blows, but at times he has been reliable. Putting happ in there is a risk. At least with Kendrick you know what you’re in for.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
robin roberts threw 13 straight CG’s. do you realize how much of a beast he was? NOONE can do that now. maybe CC or webb. maybe…
August 28th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
No, LetsGoMets!, it is depressing when you are 35 years old and attach your self-confidence to a team of players who have nothing to do with New York.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Again, if you like knowing what youre in for means getting five innings of work whereby every inning there are runners on base. No thanks.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Like Shane Victorino.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
As a Mets fan,i’m worring about this weekend vs the Marlins and i’ll worry about the Brewers come Monday. You guys should do the same vs Da Cubs.Worry about the Brewers and Mets when you face them instead of wallowing on what might happen down the road.Live the moment and stop worrying.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
It’s just night and day with this team. Regardless of outcome, at least we all knew going in that this was going to be a close fight until the end for the division. It’s just heartbreaking knowing that there are games like tonight scattered throughout the season that could have changed that theory that has remained consistent for most of the season.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Yea Kendrick needs to spend some more time in the Minors…He needs to develope a pitch so he can strikeout batters because he stuggles to strikeout batters.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
does anyone know what Hamels career high and season high in game pitch count is? i think with 108 pitches, he could have at least started the 8th and tried to get the first out…c’mon, Santana went 121 pitches game before last.
i’m really interested in knowing hamels career best number
August 28th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
he needs to show improvement, kendrick, he cant stand still otherwise carlos carrasco or JA happ will supplant him
August 28th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
If I recall, the graphic in the 7th inning said something like 125 total for a career high for Hamels.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
AC in NJ:I seen Hamels throw 120 pitches in a CG once…I dunno if thats his career high, but i’m sure it’s close.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
August 28th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
yeah, that’s right SJ Mike, and I think his avg is low 100’s.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Look the point remains: if the bullpen can’t get 3 outs, YOURE NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
thanks SJMike. so do you agree that manual fucked it up here? if the bullpen is as gassed as it appears, i can’t for the life of me see why he didn’t let Hamels at least start the 8th. he still had 10 pitches to go before 118, and it’s likely he could have gotten at least one out in that number of pitches. (and if he didn’t, then make the change then).
August 28th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Yeah, what the hell even was that pitch by Durbin? It looked slower and straighter than a batting practice pitch in a home run derby contest. You could tell it was going to be hammered before it even got to the plate.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Bullpen is just incredibly taxed after the past week, especially those Mets games. That leads to implosions like this.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
There is 30 (?) games left. You have to rely on your bullpen the rest of the way. If this is game 7 in the WS, it’s one thing, but this is game 130-something.
This is on the bullpen. They shat the bed against the Mets, the dodgers, the Nationals and now the Cubs. There are a string of shitty appearances building and it is not a good sign.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
AC in NJ, Manuel did bring in the wrong pitcher there, no doubt.
I would have brought Romero in there or Durbin to start the inning. Madson has been a 6th/7th inning guy all year and should have stayed that way.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Though Hamels should’ve pitched the 8th inning and then leave if gotten into trouble….
August 28th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
And having to pick up the pieces after the number of Kendrick 3-5 inning starts is starting to take its toll.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
so when will the bullpen become untaxed?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
They’ll be untaxed when Ryan Madson stops throwing right down the middle in the 8th inning where he doesn’t belong.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Kyle Kendrick: 145 innings – 175 (!!!) hits, 52 (!!!) walks. That is a whopping 227 baserunners in 145 innings! He is the nl version of Livan Hernandez!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Kyle – i agree in theory, but i don’t think you can characterize this as just “game 130-something”. this isn’t a nationals or braves game, although we all expect wins in those. when you’re up 4-1 on possibly the best team in baseball at their home, you’ve gotta win that. it would have been a terrific confidence booster for these guys and tied them back up in 1st after last nights debacle. Instead, we have a double dose of debacle, and now Phils gotta take 2 of 3 to get the needed split here!
i’m praying that the Marlins take 2 of 3 from the mets, but I don’t see it. and if the mets take 2 of 3, but the phils only get 1 of the next 3, they are 2 full games back at the end of it. Not the way to start September.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
SJMike hits it on the head. Madson NEVER belongs in the game in the 8th.
And Durbin – man, that pitch was just brutal awful.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Pat The Bat Burrell; 0 for 5 with five runners left on base and no offense from Pedro Feliz either. Burrell should have been rested tonight and Dobbs should have been given a start in left field with a righty starting for the Cubs. Burrell could have pinch hit if needed.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Mike B., unless it isn’t as bad as A-Rod today. He left 11 runners on base!
Tough loss for you guys, Aramis really killed that ball.
1 game lead!
Lets Go Mets!
(Retarded/useless comment from AC in NJ not needed)
August 28th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I guess we are agreeing to disagree in part. If you don’t have a pitcher, I will say it again, who can get 3 outs without giving up 3 runs – a late inning reliever no less – you don’t have a good team. And the phils HAVE NO 8TH INNING PITCHER.
Now, the Cubs are certainly favored in the remaining 3 games. And who cares if the Phils are two back at weekends end, they need worry about winning tomorrow.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Tyler – the Yankees WON the game. Isn’t THAT what matters?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Tyler – let’s go Marlins!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Is it me or is Manuel crying during his postgame interview?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
SJ Mike, is he really? I don’t live in Philly so don’t have access to the feed. What is the post-game reaction?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
I’d cry after that crap game too if I was the manager! Actually no, I’d probably just throw shit and curse!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Kyle, it was on Sports Nite on Comcast Sportsnet. The way he was talking, his eyes were glassy and he looked like he was fighting back every urge to just start bawling. I could just be imagining it because you know how Manuel gets when he mumbles and rambles.
But he looks extremely upset. No reactions from players from what I saw.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
My advice? Cut So Tagguchi, Geoff Jenkins, Adam Eaton, Ryan Madson, and Rudy Seanez and bring some prospects up! I’m sick of this stupid game we play with all these stiffs we have! The money’s gone! Fuck it! Might as well try to win a few games to save face!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
at least you can look forward to the eagles finishing 3rd, thats something to be proud about, isn’t it?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Thanks, Mike. I would be pissed too. But tears? Come on. There are 30 games left. If anything, Cole should be the one bawling. It’s like each time he pitches the team finds a way to fuck him over. Whether it’s CHarlie, the offense or the pen, it’s awful
August 28th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
Kyle, it seemed very much like he was lost. Like still in shock from the grand slam. Almost like a “I really don’t know what the hell else to do.”
And very glassy eyed and seemed to look like he was about to break out.
I wanted to see if we got a reaction from Hamels. Because I wonder if he will snap sooner or later.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Pat the bat is hitting .189 in August. Charlie needs to do something with the order.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Ryan Madson is a complete asshole. By the way Muts fans, the short bus is heading to Marlinsblog. I think you kids missed it. Please leave our blog and come back after you are dead. Also, I heard they are auctioning off a “Taz” pleather jacket on mutsblog. First three hundred visitors also get the Whitesnake box set. You guys better hurry up. These items won’t last.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:02 am
HE can’t do much else. If your eighth inning set-up dude is throwing 87 down the pike to hitters 2-3-4 of the Cubs, you’re likely not winning. What I really want to know is if Cole lobbied to stay in the game. If he didn’t I don’t blame Manual a bit. If Cole did in fact lobby to stay, its a damn shame.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:05 am
I want some answers. Zolecki or someone needs to flat out ask Hamels or others in the dugout: Did Cole Hamels tell Manual he was pitching the 8th, did he demand to stay in? Or did he simply pipe down? This is the aspect I want to know about, and why I liked seeing that fire from Red Ass Myers.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:06 am
I made that last comment because most Muts fans are white trash and white trash find “Looney Toons” pleather jackets appealing.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:06 am
they need to make the sacrafices necessary. move rollins and howard for the young pieces needed to win. just do it.. build it and they will win.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:08 am
in the offseason. if they dont make the playoffs and ONLY if you get the right deals…
August 29th, 2008 at 12:15 am
I think tyler, grumpy miner, dave, rivlez, philthadelphia, and douche the mets fan all share a dorm room at Rutgers.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:20 am
Kyle, that’s just it- neither Madson or Durbin are 8th inning set-up “dudes”. Manuel looked like he was crying already before the game was over; then again, it was over after the Ramirez slam.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:25 am
phils picked up stairs from toronto
August 29th, 2008 at 12:25 am
Come on, we can all be friends!
AC, that might be the first response I got from you with any curses.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:29 am
whats stairs hitting?
August 29th, 2008 at 12:36 am
nevermind
hes hitting .250 11hr 44 rbi.. not bad for this late in the season
guess what? hes ALSO under contract, cheaply, for next season as well…inetesting…..hes s left fielder. either they think burrell will leave or theyll move howard and keep burrell to move to first.very interesting. so at elast we have a serviceable body there for next season if they want to keep him.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Who’d the Phils give up for Matt Stairs
August 29th, 2008 at 12:45 am
ptbnl
August 29th, 2008 at 12:49 am
This can’t be a player of any real value. It’s got to be some stiff like that guy who pitched a scoreless inning yesterday.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:50 am
I like Stairs better than Jenkins anyhow at this point. It’s nothing thrilling, but it’s better than the status quo, for sure.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:53 am
stairs is 40 years old. hes signed through next season, but hes 40 years old. retirement time after this year, perhaps???
August 29th, 2008 at 12:56 am
Maybe if were lucky it’s Ryan Madson…lol JK i doubt it,but yea it’s prolly someone thats not near major league ready or something.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:00 am
uh that guy…..do me a favor…..don’t DARE put me into that group of schlubs……..that said,I don’t come in here with drivel like (insert team here) sucks or HAHAHAHAHAHA.I don’t have time for that carp.I come in here with honesty and call it down the middle whichever way it goes. Now YOU on the other hand (No I don’t want milk and cookies) come in here and belittle everyone….Why? What it does is showing lack of class and it oooozes out everytime YOU post.So before you lump someone into a group, you better think befpre you blog.BTaw tough loss for the Phils.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:00 am
40 or not, he is a solid bench player. And better than Jenkins at this point, no?

Congrats on the phillies & eagles last night! Philly just can’t beat NY at anything! Well, atleast maybe they can beat the Knicks?

Oh and BTW that guy…..I have been a Mets fan for close to 40 years and Ibm pretty damn proud of it.I rooted for guys like Pat Zachray,Dave Kingman,Lee Mazzilli,88 vs the Dodgers killed me as well as “The best team money can buy” with Bonilla,Saberhagen,Anthony Young,Kevin McReynolds…..you get my point.I am not one of those “Johnny Come Lately” Mets fans who thinks its the fashionable thing to do because they aren’t gona see October.

Brutal end to a game that I thought was in the bag! Should have left Hamels in until Lidge time!

The thing that gets me is the mets and phils are fighting to win a bad division .They don’t have a chance in hell of winning against the brewers or cubs. Both teams can’t match up with the starters or bullpens of the cubs .
