Hamels Won’t Pitch Vs. Mets
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, August 21, 2008 02:02 PM
According to David Murphy, Charlie Manuel will not move Cole Hamels up a day (to Friday) so he can pitch against the Mets next week. Instead, the Mets will see Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick.
Murphy said Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee don’t want to rush Hamels, as he leads the National League in innings and he’s at a crucial mark (he was injured after 170 innings last season and is at 181.2 now).
I can see their reasoning for not pushing Hamels up, but it’s not as if he’s losing a full day of rest. Currently he has 5.5 days rest by going Saturday. If he went Friday, he’d have close to a full five days rest. Plus, didn’t Hamels say the long rest during and after the All-Star break plagued him a bit? And just to back this up with stats, unusually, Hamels has a 2.74 ERA with regular four days rest and a 4.30 ERA with five days rest.

Despite the ERA descrepicy I dont mind this move. He needs to stay healthy so the Phillies will give him the contract he deserves.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:32 pm
with all these crazy “gamenight beers” that i’ve never heard of.. what does everyone normally drink?
Me, I’m a millier lite, corona, kinda guy… Sam Adams SummerAle is good for a few, Guiness is good for a few… but Im talking drinking all day or all night, what do you little bitches drink??
August 21st, 2008 at 2:38 pm
i think the mets will have maine and perez agaisnt us
August 21st, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Amstel Light.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:44 pm
I also drink Zima.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Do you drink Smirnoff Ice too? haha I thought they killed off Zima the same year they came up with it?
August 21st, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Zima was cool for getting girls drun k in high school…
August 21st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
THE nastiest shit ever was Tequiza,.. its lead to all these Miller Chill (GROSS) and Bud Light Lime (awesome).. but that stuff was nasty. Twisted Teas are kick-ass if you are eating something with BBQ sauce
August 21st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Jaegermiester anyone? Classic, my favorite thing in high school.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:50 pm
I’ve had Chill but not yet Bud Lime, as I like to call it.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Down in Sea Isle, LaCosta had some crazy special where Rolling Rock was $.75, and shots of Jaeger and Jaeger bombs were like $2 or $3.. we had a house right across the street and used to drink that stuff like it was our job..
Then, like two years ago, O.A.R. played at Madison Square Garden, I drank 90% of a bottle (like the $20 one), before the concert.. and was NEVER so hungover as I was the next day.. so now I don’t touch that stuff anymore.
Bud Lime is good.. I don’t like Bud Light, but the lime stuff is very good (even better than Zima!!)
August 21st, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Only scotch, beer or red wine for me. I like the occasional Bloody Mary, too. They are good for Sundays. Which one I choose depends on the way the game is going. The worse the game, the harder the stuff.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I avoid any beer with citrus in it (and Corona). They never sit well in my stomach, I stick wiht IPAs, Lager(My Grandfather was and now my uncle is the Yuengling family’s Mechanic) and Coors Original.
Anyone remember when Jack Daniels attempted to make that Hard Cola crap, similar to a Smirinoff Ice or Zima. There was no Jack in it.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I’ve killed about 75% of the $20 bottle in a span of 4 hours before but never got hungover off of it. I dont get too sophisticated with drinks, just beer, usually Miller, sometimes Ill go with Killians Irish Red. I like flavored beer, Guiness, Irish Red, but havent come across many where I could drink more than a few.Is Bud Lime worth getting a 6 and watching the game tonight?
August 21st, 2008 at 3:03 pm
you have to move him up, the mets are the team you are currently chasing you go with your best out there…manual and dubee are idiots when it comes to handling the staff anyway…the comment about the innings is ridiculous, he is going to pitch the same innings over the course of time whether you move him up or not and i would rather his innings be against the mets
August 21st, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Jacks hard coke was lame as shit. there was about an eight of a shot in a whole bottle of those.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Yea.. if you like Corona with lime, you’ll like it.. you should have some chicken or burgers or something on the grill too..
last night.. burgers, with sea salt, fresh black pepper, Worchestershire (?) sauce, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper…… and i think im making them again tonight they were so good.
See how diverse we are here at PhilliesNation.. its great
August 21st, 2008 at 3:05 pm
I drink dock street mostly because I live a block from there and they have the best beer I’ve ever had. For those of you who are interested in a root beer flavor beer I highly suggest going to dock street and trying “the sass.”
August 21st, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Jack made a Tennessee Tea, that was good, but they were like $10 for 4 small bottles.. Twisted Tea took that market over.
There was a receipe for a JACK bbq sauce though, I made it for a rack of ribs on 4th of July and it was awesome.. I forgot how much of everything, but it was Whiskey, Vinegar, Worchest, Ketchup, Hot Sauce, Butter?, Brown Sugar.. it was awesome.. you cook that right into the ribs, and then pour the rest over when they’re cooked.. other than that I always use that Sweet Baby Rays
August 21st, 2008 at 3:11 pm
There should be a game where everyone from Phillies Nation tailgates, if we make the playoffs, lets do it.
Phil, Root Beer Flavored Beer sounds like a hit or miss. I’ll try it next time im near there. Corona is cool when I’m at the beach or relaxing by the pool. I guess my beer reflects my setting/ mood most of the time.
I honestly have so much coinfidence in our staff at this point, and I’m still hanging onto the little hope that our offense explodes, I think we’ll be just fine against the Mets as long as we dont make dumb pitches to Delgado.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Don, stop with the food dude, its not even 3 hours past lunch and I want one of those burgers. I’m going straight to Genardis when I get off.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Have to agree about holding Hamels back… It’s been bad karma w/ him having to pitch AND play offense… There’s no normal rationale to this, but it’s been the trend for some reason. However, please tell me kendrick is not on the roster…. Still feel Happ should get the nod.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pm
my bad… im starving now too
August 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pm
If you can manage to get your hands on it I’m a huge fan of everything made by Anderson Valley Brewing Company. They have a couple beers that are exceptional, one is Winter Solstice (seasonal) but the other I really like is called Oatmeal Stout. Their IPA is also bombass as well as the Boont Amber Ale. TRY EM!

Zima and anything with lime in it is gay…if you want to drink 18 in one night, I go with Miller Lite, if it is just a nice 6 pack, you can’t beat Newcastle!
As far as the Phils go, I agree with bull, he’s going to pitch the innings anyway, why not against the team we are trailing in the East????
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
haha love how this is a thread about Cole not moving up a day to start against the Mets and turned into a thread about alcohol…..good work men
as for me ill take a M Lite or Yuengling anyday……although i have to say i was in dewey beach last weekend and i have to agree that Bud Light Lime is outstanding
August 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
“Zima and anything with lime in it is gay”
I’m pretty sure the whole Zima thing was a joke and how is making something taste better gay? Corona with lime is gay because of the lime? Does that make french fries with ketchup gay too?
Hamels should pitch against the Mets, but I’m confident that whoever we put out there will get it done.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
I’m not a big Yuengling fan, not really a lager guy though. I haven’t touched anything Sam Adams aside from Cherry Wheat and it was average at best.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Ok, I’ll bite… Zima was great when I got out of nursing school, with a shot of Chambord… Now, stick w/ the hard and low cal…. Stoli Vanil w/ Club Soda… Only thing that is salve on my wounded phillies soul at McFadden’s!!!
August 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pm
yea, the ZIMA thing was not actually posted by me…. BUT.. in high school we used to get it for the ladies and put skittles or jolly racnhers in it.. it would change color, they’d drink more of it because it looked cool.. and then you would have drunk high school girls with you.. life was good..
August 21st, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Haha the girls I went to high school with usually split a bottle of smirnoff raspberry between 4 or five of them and drank that with wawa iced tea. By the third or fourth game of pong the girls would be gone after playing with their spiked teas. Good times..
August 21st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
I love the Corona with Lime, so I know its not gay. I’m a big Yuengling fan, but I’ve been buying Lions Head for the good beer at house parties, its so nice and affordable. My top chilling outside in the sun beers would be Sam Adams Summer Ale, Coronas, Beck’s light. I like twisted tea to, although it gives me the shits.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Man, I need to catch up on some beers. I havent heard too many good things about Becks, similar to Heineken?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I had one BECKS in my lifetime and it was pretty good… i don’t like Heineken at all either.. or Rolling Rock..
LaBatt Blue is a very underrated beer..
August 21st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
You guys with your fruity-tootie drinks. Haven’t heard of Becks? Twisted teas? Root beer flavored beer? I bet most of you guys sit down to pee.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
i dont agree at all with handling hamels with the kid gloves. let him go out there and pitch. i like what milwaukee is doing with sabatthia. let a brother pitch. mitch williams argues that most arm problems with pitchers come from actually not pitching enough. not by pitching too much.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Becks is German Beer, Twisted Tea tastes exactly like reguar iced tea, except it gets you drunk.. and I’ve never had the RootBeer flaovered beer. but all microbrews are making flavored beers and stuff since more and more people are having beer with food, not wine.. holla
i wish i had a bathroom like on Home Improvement, when tool time did the men’s bathroom and it was a recliner, and had the TV and all that would be great.
Mitch Williams also called Jimmy Rollins THE BEST shortstop in baseball.. so, you know..
August 21st, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Fred, I’ve heard of it, just not too many good things. Alcohol is alcohol, whether it taste good or not is a personal decision I guess. Twisted Tea has the same amount of alcohol as most beers. You sound like a Budweiser guy.
August 21st, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I was only joking. Honestly I don’t drink much anymore. As a single dad with three kids under 13, I don’t have much time to enliven. And at my advanced age, over 50, I don’t feel like dealing with the day after effects. But for all you young guys, have one for me.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Hamels has been hurt this year because of his location. No matter how good you are if you get the ball up their going to hurt you. I’m not sure if it’s lack of concentration, too much trust in the catchers location, or just plain arrogance on his part but he has been touched up more HRs this year than last. Then again it could be our notoriously bad scouting reports. During this 4 game set with LA take notice if they keep away from Ramirez hitting zones. Myers handled him out there and if their smart they’ll watch the tapes and pitch him accordingly. He’s a very aggressive hitter which can be used against him. If we split with LA it’ll be lucky.
