Myers Goes All 9, Shuts Out Nats

The Brett Myers comeback is really taking shape. The right-hander threw 82 strikes in 119 pitches, striking out nine while scattering (honestly) nine hits in his complete-game shutout of the Nationals. The Phillies won 4-0.
This game was about Myers completely reclaiming both his pitches and his swagger. His curveball was nailing the spots, his fastball was generating enough speed and staying in or near the strike zone, his tertiary pitches did their job. He let up a couple hits (almost one in each inning), but nothing was hit very hard. Only Lastings Milledge knocked an extra-base hit. And he received some nice defense, including a “Die Hard”-quality double play from Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley in the eighth inning.
After running through the meat of the order unscathed, Collin Balester ran into trouble, walking Greg Dobbs and hitting Chris Coste. Jimmy Rollins got Dobbs home with a ground out that wasn’t. Dobbs added to the lead with an empirical two-run blast, and Jayson Werth doubled Coste home later in the inning. Rollins collected a single in that inning and was rewarded with a healthy dose of cheers. He proceeded to get thrown out oversliding his steal of second.
To add, it was nice to see Utley grab a couple hits, and what else can be said about Shane Victorino? He had two hits and a run. He continues to be the team’s offensive MVP in the second half.
Back to Myers. Yes, it was Washington he dominated, but what a confidence boost. Since returning from the minor leagues, Myers has been almost unrelenting, scoring an ERA under 2.00 and showing absolute composure on the hill. Yeah his fire has returned, but his focus is back, too. Baserunner? Whatever, just throw the damn ball. And the proof is in the pudding. If Myers can do close to this kind of stuff down the stretch, the starting rotation will be all set.

Boy if we can get the middle of the order on track(Iknow Utley had 2 opposite field hits),we have a good chance at this division.
All you want is a chance. Then, see what happens.
If & when the mets stop hitting ,their pen will not carry them.
And about Rollins, even if he doesnt hit,he still has to be one of the top 3 defensive shortstops in the bigs, that has to be worth a lot to the pitching.

Nice job Brett…that one tonight makes me feel good about this team again. And how about that insane double play at the end there thanks to a great defensive play by Rollins and the bare handed grab by Utley!! Keep at it Phils!

I was at the game tonight and was thrilled to be among those cheering on Myers. I think back to the dreadful game vs. the Ranger this year and the look of absolute defeat and then I look at him today and I do not see the same pitcher. True, the Rangers and the Nationals are as different as night and day when it comes to offense, but there is no arguing his performance level lately. He is not throwing slop. This is a man I’ve been hoping to see improve from his rought start this season and I am glad that he has been performing to this level. He’ll have his work cut out for him against the Dodgers again. Tonight, I think he’s reaady for them.

he was awesome tonight. that was a solid win. nats or not, they needed that BADLY

I was at the game tonight. The offense stilled looked pretty bad. Burrell, Howard, and Rollins are all in a hard slump. The bottom of the order looks really good. It’s nice to see the bottom carrying the top in a slump. When the top of the order slumped last year the bottom carried them. This season we didn’t have that until now. Myers was incredible and aside from the 1st inning he looked ridiculous. If the Nats got a hit it was either a little blooper that the defense couldn’t handle or the hitter got lucky to get his bat on the ball. Everything was looking nasty by him tonight. It was a great win.

Gotta love the fans cheering for Rollins. Campaign Cheer or not, it’s good to see and can hopefully get this team rolling. Let’s do what we can to help make things happen, since it obviously has an effect on at least one of them.

listen to all of you frontrunners singing myers praises… hahaha

I love how the Mets troll came onto the board to tell us that Pelfrey pitched a complete 3 run game. Big fucking deal. Our pitcher threw a complete game shut out.

Another very nice outing by Myers. The rotation isn’t great. But if Myers can keep it up, they are looking pretty good with Hamels / Myers / Moyer. Plus Kendrick and Blantont are inconsistent, but very capable at times.
Now… if this team could only start scoring more than 4 runs…

Phillies put up seven tomorrow

Right on! Missed the game.

Memo to Myers. Season starts in April not August.

Myers pitched well. If only we got consistency from the middle of the Phils’ batting order.
August 21st, 2008 at 7:05 am
brett pitched well against a minor league team. do this against a solid offensive major league team and we’ll talk. not that impressed.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:18 am
Yes, but Brett didn’t just pitch good. He pitched a complete game shutout, which usually qualifies as ‘dominant.’
If any of our AAA pitchers pitched a complete game shut-out, you’d better believe that half the people on the website would be demanding that guy up here.
Finally, ever since he’s been back he’s been going between “good” and “dominant.” I’d say that deserves some accolades.

gotta love it. Yesterday everyone was saying our rotation was in ruins, our offense was terrible, and we had no chance at the playoffs. A win against the Nationals, who have now lost I believe 12 in a row, and everyone is back on board. Could Jimmy have been right all along?

[...] Phillies Nation’s Tim Malcolm provided these comments on Myers’ performance since returning from the stint in the minors; This game was about Myers completely reclaiming both his pitches and his swagger. His curveball was nailing the spots, his fastball was generating enough speed and staying in or near the strike zone, his tertiary pitches did their job. He let up a couple hits (almost one in each inning), but nothing was hit very hard. [...]

Rollins is still a bum, that was a text book inning killing double play ball, he got lucky, his single was the weakest hit of the game, and he still got thrown out. Can’t argue with that defense though, but I don’t think he’s going to win another gold glove this year. It was good to see Utley get the bat on the ball, but it’s amazing how I feel now when he’s at the plate compared to a few months ago. Just think how good we’d be if he didn’t go into this two month abyss of a slump. Lastly, great game for the pitcher that looks strikingly(get it??) similar to the guy the phils used to have, Brett Myers, who is currently being held hostage is a basement in Reading somewhere.

Since being recalled from the minors, Myers is 3-1 with a 1.94 ERA.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:28 am
Well I know he has made progress, because he couldnt even do well against a bad team before…the nationals, though, are one of the worst teams ive ever seen.

MA Phanatic, I’ve been here all year, and been a Phils fan for over 20 years.
So I’m not one of them… but I am sure there are some. I do remember seeing a lot more Phillies shirts in 1993.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:02 am
im pretty sure that anyone who writes on Phillies blogs is a legit fan.. we aren’t the guys going down there in groups ofo 10 just to get drunk and BOOOO every chance we get.
AND.. knowing that there are plenty of fans like, I don’t think Rollins has be wrong in anything he said. HE SHOULDN’T HAVE SAID ANY OF IT… but he wasn’t wrong in what he actually said..
Im so ready for this team to start hitting and put that west coast trip behind them

that was supposed to have arrows pointing at the McDonald’s chicken biscuit on the left side of this page, and say how its making me hungry..

he wasnt too far off in his assessment initially, but since then hes added to it and it seems like he wants out. i just think if he really wanted to stay here hed have rectified his inital comment and backed off. but there are tons of PHONY, bogus fans down there. the types taht dont post on here but own one of those irish green phillies t-shirts and spent the whole game moving between mcfaddens and the chickies and petes stand and never set their eyes on the field more than accidentally. theres some people down there, guys and girls, that just plain dont even know what continent theyre on.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:20 am
hmmm good point there on Rollins. It’s not that he was wrong, it’s that he shouldn’t have said it. It’ll be interesting to see what happens from here. This is a similar tactic to perhaps Jim Fassel several years ago, saying “the giants are making the playoffs”. He took all the pressure off that team and put it on himself. Maybe this is Rollins way of doing the same thing? I don’t know that it is, but I think it is a possibility.
And Phil not meaning to call you out, just saying it’s remarkable how much the comments change from day-to-day on this blog.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:21 am
I agree with you.. and maybe he does want out… but its not worth trading him because it won’t make the team any better. If you want to win, you need Rollins to play better, not to play for someone else..
Even in a bad year, he’s still better than most shortstops in baseball..
August 21st, 2008 at 10:22 am
yeah. but think of someone of his value, signed for 3 more years. thatd bring a LOT in return. but then again, were talking about the phillies. you know theyd screw up the deal…
August 21st, 2008 at 10:25 am
the same people, minus ed wade, that traded placido polanco for ugeuth urbina instead of moving him over to third base.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:26 am
polanco was the type of guy that if you trade, you trade for elite prospects that take you over the hump a few years from then
August 21st, 2008 at 10:27 am
Yea i said that the other day, that Rollins creating a stir has made it a non-issue if Howard, Burrell whoever else struggle a little longer, the spotlight is on Rollins. so hopefully they all snap out of this soon.. and Rollins will look smart for taking so much pressure off of his teammates..
I think most of the guys on here are pretty consistent in their views, either steadily positive, or steadily negative.. day-to-day.. we all just want to see them win
August 21st, 2008 at 10:33 am
Polanco, at that time, was a utility infielder.. who didn’t want to play 3b, and made it known that he didn’t want to play 3b,
he was always a pretty good hitter, but not somebody that was going to get you ELITE PROSPECTS in return..
AND Urbina was a back-end bullpen guy with lots of experience. I just looked up his numbers, career 3.45 ERA, 237 Saves… thats pretty good, it just didn’t work out
August 21st, 2008 at 10:35 am
yeah. it was highly gratifying to see myers go the distance. he needed that. the phillies needed that. its a trash team hes shutting out, but earlier in the season he couldnt get ANYONE out not even the a team as bad as the ants. i know he can bea frontline starter if he chooses to dedicate himself to it. i think hes finally realizing theres no reason to go be a closer somewehre else. he has one year 12mm left on his deal, just play it out and see what happens. still, go get ANOTHER top line starter in teh offseason, and if myers is on target then you really have a nice rotation next year.
but for now, just keep churning out good starts and i think hell be fine. i wonder if hell stay here when his contract isup??? cant get a read on him. i think hell want to stay actually.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:39 am
He’s said before he doesn’t want to go anywhere else.. If they can add a top-starter in the offseason, and Myers is your #3 next year, Blanton your #4, Moyer #5.. that would be awesome.. Carrasco, Kendrick, Happ there if anyone goes down, or maybe fish Happ around and see what you can get for him in the offseason.. Happ and Jenkins could get you something, right?
August 21st, 2008 at 11:13 am
yeah it could get you a decent young outfielder on a team with lots of depth. IF you eat part of all of the rest of jenkins contract.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:15 am
yeah a “fixed” myers as your 3. now we’re talkin…
August 21st, 2008 at 11:15 am
because blanton is a 4 masquerading as a 2
August 21st, 2008 at 11:42 am
Wow, Jimmy Rollins was right. Half of this site wanted Myers out of here not too long ago now you want him to stay because he has heated up. Is it too hard for you guys too not change how you feel about a player nightly? Support the team and all its players through and through and not act like you’ve been with them the whole time when they do well. Throw them under the bus when they’re slumping and stand by their side when they have a good game. Really? There are only a handful of people that post on here that dont flip flop on here week after week and I consider myself one of them. Geoff, no plan to blow up the team today? Or maybe that’s because we won last night.
