No. 1 Prospect Carrasco Promoted To AAA Lehigh Valley

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, August 02, 2008 01:59 PM

A Minor League promotion usually means a ripple effect throughout the system, and the lucky benefactor of that effect in AA Reading is No. 1 prospect Carlos Carrasco, who was promoted to AAA Lehigh Valley today.

Carrasco, a 21-year-old right-hander, went 7-7 with a 4.32 ERA with the Reading Phillies this season. He spent a full year with Reading.

  1. Geoff Says:

wow, it looks like theyre actually interested in his development now, instead of letting him get stale in AA they did the right thing here. let him gain his confidence in AAA and if theres an emergency they will bring him up for a start or two before seasons end.

  2. KM Says:

the numbers are not impressive in AA, but it is good that they he takes another step towards the majors, because i think all of philly wants to see what was too good to trade for sabathia.

  3. Geoff Says:

yeah, and for goodness sakes, he better be josh beckett. his problem has been mental discipline. the stuff is there.

  4. Greg V. Says:

Best of luck to Carrasco. All I have seen from him is the inning he pitched in the Futures Game this year and I liked what I saw. Hopefully, he continues to improve.

  5. PhillyFriar Says:

I wish him luck, but I would’ve liked to see him master Double-A before this promotion. The Phils have rushed Carrasco several times throughout his career, and I can’t help but feel they’re doing that again.

  6. Phil Says:

He might need a change of scenery phillyfriar and AAA is practically a demotion. The talent is better in AA.

  7. Tim Malcolm Says:

I think they’ll have to be careful with Carrasco, despite my call a month ago to call him up to Philly. You don’t want to rush his arm, and with six starters in Philly, there’s no need to fast-track him. Let him get going in AAA against experienced but poorer hitting, then, if the Phils are ailing Sept. 1, bring him up with the big roster. If not, keep him there and make him earn it in Clearwater next March.

  8. Bear Mike Says:

What’s the big deal with Carrasco? #1 prospect? AA, 7-7 W-L, 4.3 ERA. BFD! I have never seen him pitch, so there may be something I am missing. “Good stuff” normally results in a low ERA, and perhaps a good W-L record. A 4.3 ERA does not qualify in my opinion.

I have seen JA Happ pitch twice in MLB. Once in person. Happ impressed the heck out of me. If Blanton has another horrible perfomance tonight, I would go with Happ………hands down.

    GO PHILLIES!!!!

  9. Geoff Says:

He has good stuff, but hes a little loose in the dome because theye mishandled him. they mishandle everyone though. i saw the interview with arbuckle yesterday, why is he so respected? that guy was was spewing complete bullshit nonstop. total con-artist. im pretty sure he has no idea what hes doing. but i also think others intervene to keep him from screwing up the whole deal.

  10. Geoff Says:

this basically means theyll purchase his contract and put him on the 40-man roster by seasons end.

  11. philsphan Says:

Bear Mike: Carrasco is only 21 (maybe he just turned 22), give him some time. He’ll be in the big leagues next year some time, but don’t rush him.

  12. Bear Mike Says:

I totally agree with never rushing a prospect, especially a pitching prospect. The mental aspect of the game is always so underated. Prime example: Brett Myers. The guy completely lost confidence in himself because he could not locate crucial pitches. I am sure you have seen the expression on his face – total confusion – almost in tears. My point was that I would think our “#1 pitching prospect” would be dominatant and improving continuously at each level of play, especially at his current level (AA).

    GO PHILLIES!!!

  13. Fred Says:

According to this blog, the best talent is to be found in AA ball. (Not that I agree with that line of thinking.) Maybe this really a demotion by promotion?

  14. Phil Says:

Fred, the best talent is in AA. AAA is for guys that just aren’t going to be able to cut it in the majors, but they have more experience. AA is where all of the natural raw talent guys are that are just trying to develop their game. AAA is the step you usually take before going to the majors so that you can play against guys with more patience and experience but without the talent at AA/majors.

  15. Fred Says:

He’s only 21 and he’s listed at 6′3″ 178 lbs. 178 lbs??? Sounds like he needs a little meat on his bones.

  16. Fred Says:

7 out of the Top 10 minor league prospects are in AAA (Baseball America). Sounds like maybe AAA has more talent.

  17. Phil Says:

No Fred, they’re in AAA because they’re probably about to be promoted. AA is the training grounds AAA is your last step before getting there. If you’re someone projected to be an impact player in the majors you spend most of your time in AA and then very little time in AAA before the call up.

  18. Fred Says:

Huh, since when is this the chain of events? Almost all of the Phillies homegrown players past and present spend more than a cup of coffee in AAA. And that’s true for most other organizations, too.

  19. Phil Says:

Talk to Don M about it. I think it’s Don M anyway. He read a book that vastly covers the minor leagues. He can explain it better than I can. AAA is mostly for older guys without the talent to make it to the majors.

  20. Fred Says:

Then why even have AAA? Just so you can field a team of almost-cans? If you follow your logic then A ball has more raw talent than AA ball. That would put the short season Clearwater Phillies in the GCL with the most talent. I don’t buy that. Can’t help it if the Phils have little or no real major league talent at the AAA level. The PCL consistently grades out as the best minor league.

  21. Fred Says:

Just because the Phils have their only real major league prospects stuck in AA doesn’t make the Eastern League better than the International or Pacific Coast Leagues.

  22. Fred Says:

Again, then why even have AAA? Baseball clubs are anything but stupid. Why waste millions on AAA ball if it didn’t perform a valuable service?

  23. Phil Says:

Now you’re just being a dick and talking about information you don’t even know. Shut the fuck up.

  24. scot Says:

Fred, it’s really not worth having a debate with Phil. If you disagree with him you are immediately a dick. Save your time.

  25. Fred Says:

Phil, it’s nice to see you have such a command of the English language. Fact is if any of us were such experts we’d have a job with a MLB team. It’s fun discussing our different opinions but it would also be nice to be differ in opinion without expressing profanity to one another.

  26. Craig Says:

lets trade him for some lefty 2 month rental.

    wooooooooooooooooooo

  27. J-Man Says:

Trade him and Jason Donald and other prospects for Roy Halladay…This guys projected to be a #3 starter at best and the Blue Jays need a SS and we have one to give in Donald.

  28. Geoff Says:

our managment doesnt know how to project pitching, thats why we barely have any.

do you really think theyd refuse to trade carrasco for sabathia if he really projected as a 3rd starter? thats insane, if he projects to a 3 then you trade him for somehting better. OBVIOUSLY thats bullshit, he projects higher than taht. but the phillies do NOT value pitching organizationally speaking. so they undervalue what he actually CAN POTENTIALLY BE.

  29. Geoff Says:

theyre not getting roy halladya anyway, ever. you want roy hallday? shane victorino, lou marson, carlos carrasco, jason donald, fabio castro greg golson. if you dont offer that then im hanging up the phone.

  30. NJ Says:

It’s so hard to judge whether the Phils prospects are better placed in LV than Reading but the VP’s in the FO know better than we do. The kids got great stuff but is still learning to pitch, in AAA he’ll see more patient and seasoned hitters which should improve his command instead facing the usually more talented but nevertheless hackers in AA.

  31. fred Says:

Hey Fred we need a way of distinguishing between the two of us. And btw i agree with you about AAA, how can AA be stronger than AAA ? If it was stronger than why bother promoting Carrasco, you might as well demote him to A+ !
