Phillies (65-57) At Padres (47-75)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, August 16, 2008 08:27 PM
Finally grabbing a win, the Phillies will look to tee off against Chad Reineke, who makes his Major League debut tonight for San Diego. Last night the Phils beat a guy pretty far from his debut, one Greg Maddux. The Phils won 1-0 against the Hall of Famer, with their starter making a small push for the Hall himself — Jamie Moyer.
Kwality Kyle: Phillies starters have thrown 14 quality starters in their last 20 games. The Phils are third in the National League in said category. Kyle Kendrick likes the QS: His 6 IP, 3 ER novelties (Kendrickian starts) are exactly what a QS is. He has 13 of them this season — his last start, however, wasn’t (3.1 IP, 7 ER).
Padre Past: Only two Padre hitters (Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Kouzmanoff) have history against Kendrick. They’re a combined 1-for-5 against him.
Pat Pushing It: With two more homers, Pat Burrell would join Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in the Phillie 30-homer club. It would be the third time the Phils would have three sluggers reach that number in one season (they did it last year [Howard, Burrell, Jimmy Rollins]).
Hobbled Hobbs: Greg Dobbs had left quad injury. He said he’s ready to go, however, and was brought in to pinch hit Friday night before being pulled with a lefty coming in to pitch.
Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (10-6) 4.74 ERA
Padres: Chad Reineke (0-0) 0.00 ERA [Debut]
Gametime: 10:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 71, sunny
Lineup:
MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday
Your gamenight beer: For this summer night, go with Vacationland Summer Ale by Gritty’s in Maine. Whether you’re on vacation or chilling at home, a summer ale is never a bad choice. Eat some fried clams or shrimp with this easy treat.
Go Phillies!

at the game…2 to 1 phillies fans
August 16th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
rollins. 0-1 pop out to left!!
August 16th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Oh no! Kyle’s dad is there tonight! I hope it doesn’t yield the same results as Nuke Lalohse’s old man showing up!
August 16th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Wow, quiet night on here. So far, Jimmy has been has been very dissappointing: 0-3 with ugly ABs. I like Shano in the 6 hole. It really distribues the speed a little bit more. Should he be moved to lead off for a few games? I don’t know, but something has to be done to motivate Jimmy. I am completely confused by his performance and attitude this year. That MVP was apparently the Kiss of Death (KOD).
August 16th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
can somebody lift kendrick now? please?????
August 16th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
oh boy, here we go!!
August 16th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
wtf kendrick
August 16th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Man they need to option Kendrick to the Minors to develop another pitch…Bring Happ back up he’s more Major League ready.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
what a joke w/kendrick tonight. totally sucks.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Kyle’s dad probably doesn’t have any fingernails left.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
All he had to do was retire the pitcher and couldn’t do it.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
condrey is another joke. this guy has to go.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
I feel bad for Kyle though because you know he’s really trying.(unlike some others on this team)
August 16th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Man, this is BAD! This is a team that doesn’t score. 2nd wose in the NL.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
I hate those singing fruit of the loom guys!
August 16th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
it’s funny how Manny leaves the red sox, then goes to LA and kills us. now Brian Giles refuses to go to red sox, stays in SD and kills us. it’s the curse of the sox on the phils.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
The Phils are just cursed, period.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Kyle needs to be optioned back to the Minors TONIGHT…He wasn’t Major League ready when he was called up last year and needs to develop another pitch…This retarded organization will keep him around and let him keep getting destroyed when we have a pitcher down in the minors in Happ whos more Major League ready and can help us out more.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
does anybody know the phils record this year against pitchers making their major league debuts/first time starts?
they are making this guy look like an all star.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
wtf howard? called out on strikes to rookie reineke??
THIS IS SUCH A DAMN JOKE.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
How about sending Howard back down?! Too many Ks!
August 16th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
REINEKE – throws 60% of his 102 pitches for strikes.
KENDRICK – threw less than 50% of his pitches for strikes, can’t get out of the fifth.
what are you gonna do?
August 16th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
strike that – can’t get out of the fourth!
August 16th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
I’m thinking with another two loses to SD, Charlie doesn’t make it back to the East Coast. The death watch is on.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
The Phillies were 16-8 prior to tonights game when Kyle started the game: a 0.667 winning percentage. I know he has been given good run support this year, but any way you slice it, he has given our team a chance to win ball games. I would love to see Happ be called back up, but not at the expense of dropping KK.
August 16th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
And who takes over for Charlie?
August 17th, 2008 at 12:02 am
they shouldn’t lose tomorrow with Hamels on the mound….(hopefully). Law of averages says he’s got to win one at some point – its been such a long time already.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:03 am
I’ll take anyone over Charlie at this point! It is totally obvious that he has lost the team! There is nothing he can do that will get them to win. I’d bring in Dallas Green to sub for the rest of the season if he’s up for it! He knows how to handle these situations!
August 17th, 2008 at 12:03 am
My guess the safe (organizational’s) move would be to Jimy Williams.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:03 am
who’s gonna fire charlie mid-season???? you mean the phils have an OWNER (singular) with the balls to do that? NO – it’s a committee of minority partners, all idiots who don’t care except that the seats get sold. c’mon, be realistic
August 17th, 2008 at 12:04 am
I think a lot of Charlie’s decisions are based on information that we don’t know about – detailed stats for one at his fingertips. I get just as frustrated as anyone, but I don’t think they are anywhere close to flush Cholly.
I for one am a huge Mitch Williams fan. Any thoughts on Mitch at the wheel?
August 17th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Lol! Wild Thing as manager? Come on now! What happend the last time we had a Phillies legend as coach? We ran him out of town!
August 17th, 2008 at 12:09 am
The owners have no say as to how this organization is operated. Dave Montgomery has complete control to the point he cannot be fired. It’s how he put the limited partnership together. Any and all moves are done through DM and him only. So any move to replace Charlie would be generated from Montgomery. Again, the partners have zero say in the day-to-day operation of this club.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:09 am
I agree that Jimmy Williams would be considered for the job. My concern would his ability to motivate our team. I really don’t think Mitch would realistically be considered for Manager, but I do believe he could motivate the Phillies.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:09 am
I agree with AC, they don’t have the balls to fire Charlie, and they sure as hell don’t want to pay more than they’re paying him.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:10 am
Dave Montgomery is a giant idiot too. The team needs to be sold to Comcast.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:12 am
I really think the motivation to win starts at the top, and Montgomery just wants his $$$.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:14 am
How about the bullpen, let’s see how they do with their tired arms next week.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:14 am
did anyone see that the Yankees released Richie Sexson? CAN THE PHILS NOW PLEASE DO THE SAME THING WITH SO TAGUCHI????
The team has paid $175,000 per RBI for each of his 6 rbis this season. Great return on investment.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:18 am
No, Charlie likes having someone to practice Japanese with. Plus, he’s a great defensive replacement for Pat… I mean, assuming he doesn’t have a play at the plate to throw to.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Is it just me, or do the Phillies kept getting dealt unfair hands? Werth was safe, yet called out. I’ve seen several other games where your team gets the sour end of the stick when it comes to close calls.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:19 am
I agree that DM is not totally committed to winning. Jimy would be the replacement because he’s on the staff and he comes cheap. As to whether he is the best man for the job, as far as the Phillies are concerned, that’s not the issue.
Net profits is the motivational factor for DM – his salary is directly tied to that. Therefore the cheapest and easiest available person would get the job. Firing Charlie would also be a face saving move allowing Montgomery to claim at least he tried to do something.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Two bad crews, no doubt abotu that.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:20 am
I called it before replay proved it; Werth was safe. Even the amateur eye can see it.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:20 am
you got that right mickey. now with the mighty les walrond coming in, i might as well pack it in for the night.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:21 am
here we go walrond…walk #1
August 17th, 2008 at 12:22 am
walrond should send a thank you card to adrian gonzalez.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Anyone think we’re going to score 4 more runs?
August 17th, 2008 at 12:24 am
I tuned out. This game sucks. This season sucks. This is without a doubt the worst season ever. You knew a lot of those lousy teams we had in the late nineties were going to blow. These guys are great players and they have been flatlining! There is nothing worse than that! Something has got to be done!
August 17th, 2008 at 12:24 am
David: Actually, I think the Phillies have gotten several favorable calls lately. Jayson was definently safe though. All in all, I think the calls even themselves out over the season.
BTW, It’s nice to see a Mets fan come on here and not talk trash.
David Wright is one of my favorite players. What a huge talent, and a hard nosed ballplayer!
August 17th, 2008 at 12:28 am
Usually the manager takes the bullet for the players.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I appreciate your recognition, Bear Mike.
David Wright is the face of the New York Mets, much like Utley embodies the Phillies; or so I believe that to be the case. My favorite Phillie was Aaron Rowand. Money ruins everything, doesn’t it?
Utley and Howard struck out, back-to-back. What is going on with your offense?!
The Mets’ bullpen issues and the Phillies’ offensive slump a
August 17th, 2008 at 12:30 am
The Mets’ bullpen and Phillies’ offensive slump are phenomena I cannot understand**
August 17th, 2008 at 12:30 am
yeah, like they say , you can’t fire the whole team.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:32 am
you have to wonder if some of these guys are blowing it intentionally, what other explanation can there be to suck this bad?
August 17th, 2008 at 12:32 am
Must we strike out so much??? At least put the ball in play.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:33 am
Money only ruins everything when you don’t have the ability (or desire) to spend it David. The Mets SPEND money – that’s why they have Santana. Next year, the Mets will be spending probably $25 million more, when they open their new stadium. It will be a license to print money, and they’ll do it.
Nobody knows how they’ll do with who they sign, but they will spend it.
Meanwhile, the phils will remain content (as Gillick, the soon to be ex-GM says) with “somebody from the B list”.
It totally sucks. But enjoy it on your end.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:34 am
Howard just K’d…….again. At what point do people begin to question Milt Thompson as hitting coach? I am not at all impressed. For example, one thing I would like to see Carlos “GIDP” Ruiz do is drop his hand at the set point in his trigger 1″. This may not be a cure all, but with every player of mine who hits a disproportionate ratio of ground outs, this typically does work at least in the short term.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:35 am
totally agree with Bear Mike – I said it 4 weeks ago – definitely Milt Thompson should be gone. When almost every players hits below their career averages, it’s a systemic problem. he’s got to go.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:36 am
They won’t question jack until they start to lose money.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:37 am
ahhhhh…charlie tempting fate again with more les walrond.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:39 am
who cares? game’s over.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Not much choice, the bullpen’s tapped out.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Vic!!!!! What a play!!
August 17th, 2008 at 12:45 am
This team lacks fundamentals. Victorino makes a great catch then misses the cutoff man. Twelve strikeouts through 8 innings.
Who’s responsible for this? The manager takes the heat.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:45 am
If we can’t score runs tomorrow,we gotta part ways with Charlie.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Well on that note, off to bed.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Goodnight guys………….this one is toast!
August 17th, 2008 at 12:47 am
fucking walrond.. fucking charlie. good nite. i wish i could say good riddance and cut the cord already.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:47 am
with the exception of davey lopes the entire coaching staff needs to go
August 17th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Howard’s K’s are like Shaq on the free throw line, not a worry to him. A shame, really.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:49 am
It’s not Charlie’s fault that these primadonna’s can’t hit, and it wasn’t to his credit that they hit like crazy in April and May.
The bottom line is that this team simply isn’t very good.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:49 am
From the look of Charlie, it looks like he knows the end is nigh.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Howard is hitting 43 points below average. don’t give him another penny more in salary. let him sit for 3 more years and then run home to st. louis.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Charlie looks so stressed out, I’m afraid he might have a coronary. NOW I’m going to bed.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:52 am
I’m not suggesting it’s Charlie’s fault but someone will eventually take the fall. This team is full of million dollar talent and ten cent heads.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:52 am
anyone know if Rowand spent any time on the DL this year? Mr. Gillicks main concern for not resigning him…
guess he was certain of the rollins/howard leadership skills (LOL)
August 17th, 2008 at 12:55 am
Don’t worry guys.
J-Roll guarantees that they’ll go 35 – 4 from here.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:56 am
ladies and gents – geoff jenkins. nice. 33 points below his career average this year. This year’s Wes Helms. Thanks Pat Gillick. (FU).
August 17th, 2008 at 12:58 am
Basically, w/this offense, Hamels needs to throw a shutout tomorrow.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:59 am
Mercifully it ends.
From the look of the dugout no one gives a damn. No fire. No cheering. No words of encouragement. Howard looks like he’s in dreamland. Utley chews on his gum and stars into space. If being paid like royalty can’t get these guys fired up, what can? Goodbye Charlie – it was nice knowing you.
August 17th, 2008 at 1:04 am
Not only will hamels have to toss a shutout, he will have to homer too
August 17th, 2008 at 1:10 am
sadly, I think Charlie’s job is safe. Things would have to get really ugly towards the end of the season before Charlie even goes on the hot seat. But as long as the Phillies are still in contention he’s not going anywhere.
August 17th, 2008 at 1:19 am
This is very hard to watch baseball right now. How this team can be so underperforming is a mystery. The apparent lack of desire is baffling. It appears – win or lose – they just don’t give two hoots. As long as the checks keep rolling in on the 15th and 30th they’re pleased. Sad.
August 17th, 2008 at 1:58 am
Until this team signs a big free agent and stops settling for the”B-list”players,we will be a fucking joke…It’s sad and they have the money to spend too.
August 17th, 2008 at 3:41 am
You guys should stop screaming at Kendrick. So he had his monthly bad game. If anyone should be sent back down, it’s Walrond. Through their 6-8 August thus far, the Phils have scored 44 runs in 14 games. That’s 3.14 runs per game. You don’t win titles with such meager offense.
August 17th, 2008 at 5:04 am
If you were a regular in the Phil’s lineup you would have to be frustrated as to what has been going on for quite awhile. Your lead-off hitter generally cannot get on, your clean-up hitter strikes out most of the time or either grounds into the infield shift and the bottom of the batting order cannot hit their way out of a paper bag. Like the old saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t score runs.
August 17th, 2008 at 7:45 am
Not looking good for the Phils.
August 17th, 2008 at 7:59 am
Great, the Phillies can’t hit or pitch, and the Mets have 8/10.
Now everyone that said that they didn’t need to do something offensively at the trade deadline are eating their words. The pitching still has the potential to be terrible, the hitting is not timely, and if they aren’t hitting the homerun, they don’t know how to score runs.
Last 3 games the Phillies have scored 5 runs, and 3 of those runs were scored in a loss. In those 3 games they have hit 1 homerun.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:05 am
One of my favorite Phillies, but I have to say it.
Time to start the “Fire Milt” thread. This team couldnt score against Jenna Jameson.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:25 am
I believe that your team’s hitting woes will disappear when your hitting coach disappears as well.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:51 am
can’t blame the hitting coach if the guys don’t try to implement what he is trying to help them with.
August 17th, 2008 at 11:53 am
where is this team’s fire! where’s the passion! DID WE QUIT WHEN THE GERMAN’S BOMBED PEARL HARBOR! NO. !!!
seriously though. its become painfully apparent that this team sorely misses Aaron Rowand. There’s no buts about it.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Does anyone know what matresses are in the dugout? Those badboys really send you to sleep easy…
Seems there is a job where you can sleep on the job and still get a hefty paycheck… I’m inspired.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Germans bombing Pearl Harbor?
August 17th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Craig…
John Belushi…
Animal House.
August 17th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
This team makes me think I have a shot at pro ball. You can do whatever you want pretty much. Swing at the first pitch, say what you please, not give a damn pretty much.
August 17th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Hey lets be real here, very few people have a shot at pro ball but you can learn little things from this Philly team. Go to work tomorrow and go to sleep at your desk and when your boss questions you (after ignoring him because of course your always right), you just say you take pride in your job like your a memeber of the Philadelphia Phillies… And if he doesn’t like it then then you just say he’s being unreasonable it’s not September…
August 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Charlies needs to go,hitting coach needs to go,and the 3rd base coach needs to go to start.
August 17th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Rob..
Way over my head that one.
February 6th, 2010 at 7:06 am
This blog is excellent. Keep up the good work, inspires me to keep building mine on the positives of resveratrol.
