The Phillies have traded minor leaguer Brian Schlitter for left-handed reliever Scott Eyre.

Eyre, designated by the Cubs a few days back, was 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA for Chicago this season.

  1. Chase Mutley Says:

    A 7.15 ERA sounds promising.

  2. Matt Says:

Could be a nice surprise though. He broke the Cubs record with 33 straight scoreless appearances spanning 23 2/3 innings which went from Aug ‘07 to June ‘08. He basically just got lost in the shuffle of all those cubbie arms. As a lefty specialist I think it could be a nice pickup. Don’t focus on the overall numbers. I’ll take him. Better than nothing.

  3. Adam Says:

he better never see a righty. they are hitting over .400 off him. he has a whip of 1.68. this guy is used to pitch to one hitter. he should never go more than two-thirds of an inning. if used appropriately he could be better than a sack of potatoes but ill bet the phils dont use him correctly and his era explodes.

  4. Geoff Says:

romero is the loogy, romero is the loogy, romero is the loogy.

why dont they understand that? now they have two loogys. they need a bonafide setup man.

  5. Geoff Says:

we can hope all we want, and i could be wrong, but im pretty sure this guy is trash and will be cut by september.

  6. Griffin Says:

    can he hit?

  7. Greg V. Says:

I just picked up some play off tickets on stubhub, I don’t know about you guys.

  8. Phil Says:

Geoff, I don’t see anything wrong with having 2 loogys. He can be the early in the game loogy and Romero can be the late in the game loogy, but we do need a set up man.

  9. Nick Says:

Let’s try not to forget that in 2006 J.C. Romero had an ERA over six. It’s the nature of relief pitching, you can’t really predict success or failure. Gillick has picked more than one guy off the scrap heap in his day.

Oh, and if you guys haven’t heard, Brett Favre got traded to the Jets. I get all the inside info …

  10. that guy Says:

With that many appearances, do you know how bad you have to be to have a 7.15era

  11. Phil Says:

that guy he had 18 appearances and 16 of the 18 were scoreless appearances. He got shelled for 9 runs on 1 and 1/3 inning or some shit like that and his ERA skyrocketed. He was also just come back from surgery on those outings too.

  12. Kennedy Says:

no risk high possible reward, can’t argue with this

  13. Brett Farvre Says:

I hear the Phillies are looking for a guy with a good arm to be their No.2 starter. Well, I’m one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, so I’m obviously a No. 1, but if this thing with the Jets doesn’t work out and you guys are willing to make me THE starter, I’m game.

Wait, what? What do you mean there are five starters on every baseball team? Well, can I at least be the guy at the top of the depth chart?

  14. Eli Says:

Gotta love picking up minor leaguers

  15. Geoff Says:

Now they need an outfielder who does not suck to come off the bench. giles was hitting close to .300. but tahts too good for the phillies (WHO PASSED) so they are waiting for someone worse.

  16. philsphan Says:

I would have rather had Chad Bradford or Brian Giles, but Scott Eyre can help this team more than his ERA would suggest. He is better than Les Walrond, and certainly better than Mesa and Alfonseca were last year, although that’s not saying much.

  17. KM Says:

Great, another re-tread player, another arm in the bullpen that we cant quite trust. You know it is August, because the Phillies start scouring the trash heap for the re-treads this time ever year, that will “put us over the top.” God forbid we make a deal for a starting pitcher that is worth his paycheck like Sabathia. No way! let’s wait until these bum players clear waivers and then we will make a trade for a pitcher that no other team wanted.

I am so fed up with the philosophy of the Phillies organization Let’s not better ourselves where we have glaring holes, let’s just pick up these worthless re-treads, because it won’t cost us anything.

The only way to get to this organization would be to stop going to the games, stop watching on tv, and stop buying merchandise, but nobody would do that, and to be honest with u, i wouldn’t either. This organization has us by the balls, because they could easily go all out and win this year, but instead we will stay where we are, while our main world series competitors, who were better then us beforehand, have upgraded their rosters.

  18. Eli Says:

Who knows maybe he can be the next condery, madson…castro, alfonshita, luke cockrund.. the list goes on on amazing bullpen players

  19. Fred Says:

Eyre, age 36, has only pitched 11 innings this year. He’s got 14 SO against only 4 BB. A lifetime ERA of 4.42 . The last three years he’s pitched in 86, 75 and 55 games. ERA’s 2.63, 3.38 and 4.13 in those years.

A good veteran pickup or an old tired arm? Guess time will tell but usually good pitching talent doesn’t get buried in the pen or sent to the minors.

  20. Gavin Says:

This is a typical Phillies shit move. Claim that his was the best thing they could do at this point. Eyre blows ass. He’s Dennis Cook’s younger long lost brother.

Phuck this shit. I’m tired of this fucking team. They’re not very likeable this year. I know its the same guys for the most part, but I just dont really like them.

  21. Geoff Says:

    Theyre all douchebags this year…

eyre might be allright for a while, but comeon.. another scrap heap guy you have to hope will be ok.

  22. todd Says:

some of u guys clearly dont know the business of baseball. omg he has a 7 era, he sucks, hes not an allstar y did we get him! y didnt we get giles hes hitting almost 300. please geoff u dont know shit if the guy is over 30 u think the guy blows. eyre has been a steady lefty specialist throughout his career. this way we dont have to throw jc out there every damn nite n tire him out. also u wana know y we pass on giles? cus hes making 9 mil this yr and 11 mil next yr if he is traded 4 werth numbers. no thanx

  23. Bruce Says:

When Eyre joins the team, the next move would seem to be for Happ to go back to Lehigh Valley. It makes sense since Happ needs to be active as starter.

  24. todd Says:

and km u wanted cc but would he really had been worth our number 1 2 and 4 prospects 4 half a yr? our farm would b non existant and every1 knows hes testing fa this yr to make the most money. sry id rather c us compete 4 yrs to come then risk it all on 1 yr

  25. todd Says:

while its not great having happ keep sitting in our bullpen id hate 4 us to keep wasting his options. so its prob Les Walrond goin down

  26. that guy Says:

Todd: Are you sending text messages or posting comments? Please use words. It takes too damn long to figure out what the hell you are saying. As far as this team goes, we still need a #2 starter and a contact hitter. This is not a newsbreak but its hard for me to get excited about acquiring a mediocre (at best) bullpen piece. Especially since the bullpen is not our major malfunction.

  27. Bruce Says:

I’m wondering if the Phillies are require to pick up the remainder of
Eyre’s $3.8 million contract (about $1.5 million still owed to him).

  28. NJ Says:

I think from what I read we are picking up the contract and it’ll be Happ going down before Walrond.

Gillick has made a habbit of picking up relievers well into their mid thirties and we’ve paid dearly for it with sub-par relievers and having to re-model our pen every year to replace departing free agents not under team control. Eyre’s K/BB rate is promising and it makes sense he suffered from a lack of work but when and how is he going to be used here?

If it means drating elite college relievers high we better start doing it because we have not had one minor league starter transition into a major-league calibre reliever since Madson who’s creeping towards his walk year.
