Phillies Bring Up Andrew Carpenter

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, August 27, 2008 04:58 PM

In a stunning move, the Phillies have purchased the contract of prospect Andrew Carpenter. The 23-year-old right-hander was pitching in A+ Clearwater, and together with a stint in Reading, was 9-11 with a 4.68 ERA this year.

Andy Tracy was designated for assignment to make room for Carpenter on the 25-man roster, and Mike Zagurski was placed on the 60-day DL to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

No word yet on Carpenter’s role, but as of now Kyle Kendrick is starting tonight. Carpenter was scheduled to start tonight — as was Kris Benson — but the Phils could use Carpenter out of the bullpen if necessary. To me, it’s a good move for at least tonight.

Why bring up an A+ pitcher. They should throw Benson out there.

  2. ped Says:

This move seems to be done just to add to a bullpen that used everyone last night. I can see him going in if kyle doesn’t last too long. But kyle is gonna shut them down!

Happy belated birthday Kyle! Get a win tonight!

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

They’d have to pay Benson. A lot more.

  4. PhillyFriar Says:

Wow, that’s a shock. Hopefully we’ll see the good Carpenter (2007 Carpenter or mid-July 2008 onwards Carpenter) who pounds the strike zone and mixes his average pitches well. If the early 2008 (overweight) Carpenter rears his head, things could get ugly.

Congrats to Andrew. Hopefully Kendrick can go 6 or 7 tonight to take some stress off the bullpen, and we can see Carpenter make his debut another time.

its a intresting move and i saw him the 22nd at trenton and he pitched pretty well: 7.0 ip 2 H 1R 0ER 2bb-8k (win ). The Thunder lineup is pretty good and he shut them down.

  6. Scheity Says:

I heard he’s gonna take Cole’s spot in the rotation and Hamels is gonna become our everyday third baseman.

  7. TJ Says:

Well this is obviously for a long relief situation if one were to occur tonight but I hope it doesnt. Dont wanna tire the whole pen before the Cubbies because we’ll be seeing the bullpen alot there if our starters make the tiniest of mistakes. Hoprfully he works out though.

  8. Sam Says:

I’m sure they’ll option him before or near the beginning of the cubs’ series, this is probably only in case of an emergency.

  9. J-Man Says:

This is prolly just temporary because we used most of the bullpen yesterday and they desperately need the day off.

  10. KM Says:

this seems like a temporary move for tonight. i don’t expect him to be on the team long, even is he gets a chance and performs well.

  11. Mike Carpenter Says:

if the guy has been as solid for the last month or so as i’ve read, we’re lucky to have him in the minor league system. bringing him up now may present a problem, it may not, but we gotta give him his shot now, maybe he’ll do awesome and he’ll help the org make a push into october, you never know. Plus, i would just KILL for a Philadelphia Phillies Carpenter jersey!!!

  12. Jeff Says:

Walrond would have been more useful tonight to pitch to Delgado.

  13. Philly Keith Says:

Kris Benson is washed up, he wasn’t even that good before his 25 arm surgeries . I hope they don’t let him come in to ruin our playoff run.

With that being said, calling up a class A guy with so-so numbers is a bit of a head scratcher too.
