The Sad Truth About We Philadelphia Fans

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, August 21, 2008 12:55 PM

Scott Lauber had some interesting words from Jimmy Rollins – following front-runner-gate – about free agents and Philadelphia. In this report Wednesday, Lauber wrote Rollins tries to recruit free agents for the Phillies, but some are turned off too much by the fans. According to Rollins, players don’t want to put their families in danger.

It’s pretty easy to get heated from this stuff. Not to Rollins, but to how Philadelphia fans are perceived. I’d like to just throw it down and say “enough!” but my voice isn’t large enough. Not when major media outlets are spewing old stories as if they define us today. But the stories are recycled for every national telecast, every major story, every draft pick, etc., etc.:

  • Fact: We booed Santa Claus.
  • Get over it: It was over 30 years ago. The guy was drunk. He was a bad Santa, and the Eagles were a bad team.

  • Fact: We threw batteries at JD Drew.
  • Get over it: I won’t defend drunken idiot catholic high school kids. Drew (and Scott Boras) screwed us.

  • Fact: We cheered after Michael Irvin’s career-ending injury.
  • Get over it: A minority of idiots cheered. Most cheered way after, when Irvin was being carted off, as if to show respect.

  • Fact: We don’t always support our team.
  • Get over it: Yeah, when they aren’t playing well. Most cities are like this.

And that’s what bugs me most. Most cities are hostile toward opposing players, opposing teams and yes, their own teams. Go to a Sox game sometime and listen to “Yankees suck” chants … when they’re playing the Orioles! Or read their shirts (we have the decency to asterisk our vulgarity). Go to Yankee Stadium and hear them spit fury at A-Rod, the best player of our time! Go to Chicago (not all Cubbie fans are cuddly, cute apologists) and Detroit and see the same thing. The Phillies are in a big market east of the Mississippi, with big-market fans. We fans are no worse than those in Boston, New York, Chicago or Detroit.

The difference?

Let’s see. Boston has Fenway Park and a couple recent world championships. New York has Yankee Stadium, a flood of tradition and a couple recent world championships for both teams. Chicago has Wrigley Field and some ridiculous “lovable loser” quality (Why are the Phillies immune to this?). Detroit has recent world championships and loads of tradition. And God help me if someone compares us to Saint Louis again – they have world titles, tradition, and an entirely different view of good and bad.

Oh, and Philadelphia had Veterans Stadium for years, plus one championship and a whole bunch of bad teams.

For some reason Philadelphia – and mainly the Phillies – has been stomped on by the mainstream media. We ain’t New York or Boston, meccas of the northeast and the two major cities on either side of ESPN headquarters. We ain’t Chicago, a market the mainstream media needs to show everyone else they’re not simply hugging Boston and New York all the time. We’re Philadelphia, caught in the middle, pushed to the bottom of the barrel. And because of that analysts, “experts” and talking heads don’t do their research, don’t talk about us. Instead of real-time talk and intelligent information, we’re given the “these are the guys who booed Santa Claus” crap.

And because every baseball player this side of Jamie Moyer grew up with the mainstream media feeding them “information,” every player believes very honestly that Philadelphia is the rung right above Hell. What they don’t believe, and don’t know, is that we’re passionate, intelligent, real fans. We appreciate hard play. We’ll cheer you if you run out a play, if you dive for the ball, and yeah, if you get a hit once in a while. Yeah, sometimes we’re goombas, but every city has their goombas. The problem is everybody else is too ignorant to look at anything else.

I just wish we could change the perception.

I hate that perception. Thats why I hate ESPN TV with a passion. the flyers are a good example of non-negativity. that team can do no wrong sometimes when they shouldve been crucified for many of the bad decisions bob clarke made. perfect example of over-leniency by our fans, not over-negativity.

the eagles are a failed, loser, gutless, heartless, brainless franchise and they always have been. theres NOTHING to cheer about there really and there never really has been.

the sixers…more to cheer about than the eagles, sitll a lot of pain for their fans though
the phillies…more to cheer about than the eagles, still losingest franchise ever in baseball with over 10,000 losses.

If J-hole doesnt want to play here, than he can get out. i want people here who want to play baseball and who appreciate the fans for the passion they bring.

  2. President of Mets Nation Says:

You also cheered when Jose Reyes got drilled by eric bruntlet in the head, and couldn’t move for a minute, get over it…. Na never, it’s fact you guys are the most classless city in sports, a bunch of drunk frat boys getting hammered in the parking lots 8 hours before the game. I’ve been to the Bank enough times to know not to bring kids, girls etc.
It was only this year when my brother and I had to knock some fat drunk slob the fuck out in front of the Mike Schmidt monument. When you guys come to Shea, we leave you alone, the worst you get is the occasional ASSHOLE chant, but hey what can you expect from the team with the most losses in sports history, hey at least you got Rocky! Lets Go Mets, ps Lets go Giants!

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

El Presidente, I’ve been to games at Shea, and no, you don’t leave us alone.

  4. President of Mets Nation's friend Says:

Come back to bed and this time we’ll pretend we’re Chelsea Boys instead of Grenwhich Village Queens… Then we’ll discuss politics and greek mythology…

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

I don’t know what that means. Especially the “Grenwhich” part.

  6. Richie Says:

Honestly, mets fans, how do you even call that place you play in a stadium. It is not Shea Stadium, I don’t care if you are getting a new one or not. It is Shea’s Sewer to me pal, because I would much rather watch a game from the sewer than go in there. Same thing with Yankee Stadium(complete dump). Who’s idea was it to build a new one across the street, forget about getting your occasional rough up at CBP, what about getting killed outside of your NY stadiums(glorified Sewers). The NY fans have no clue, no class, and no heart. They boo because someone in the media tells them to, they chant things because someone in the media tells them one of their players is messing around with Madonna. Nothing but a bunch of puppets you are. Look at you pal, on a Phillies blog site putting in your two cents…Why??..because you have a choke team in a dirty city and a sewer for a stadium…that is why you come to CBP…to get away from the rats in your stadium(sewer)..

  7. Geoff Says:

um, new york is a trashpit man. i was there not too long ago. police tasing people for no reason, beating down kids for no reason. trash everywhere. scum, lowlifes all over the place. everythings expensive. the pizza is unbeatable and unequaled, dont get me wrong, but that was THE only good thing about new york. the rest of new york is garbage. the fans of new york are ALWAYS negative and theyre way MORE negative than any other fans in american sports.

  8. Geoff Says:

you people sit there and take all that from your cops? who are the worst, most crooked, corrupt, criminal police in america and you call yourselves americans?

  9. NJ Says:

Is it possible to get an agreement between Phils and Mets thans that we don’t like them and they don’t like us? Quiet mutual hatred and occasional fact based debate is so much pleasant.

    Boo? Fuck you!

  10. Richie Says:

NYC……..The Armpit of America……..Proceed with Caution……Was there last week…..I got pickpocketed and haggled for money by the bums on the street………and I didn’t wear any Phillies stuff…………..but hey I guess that is the New York way of living.

  11. Geoff Says:

i actually enjoy talking to smart new york fans about stuff, but there arent many. theres like 3 on here.

  12. PhillyFriar Says:

Leave it to a Mets fan to hijack a sincerely-written thread.

Well said, Tim. I don’t know if a way exists to change the perception of Philadelphia, but I know one thing that will make everybody a little happier: a championship. In any sport. I think a ton of the frustration is directly linked to this title drought, and while a Super Bowl or a World Series title won’t magically transform us into St. Louis fans, it would help to dull the frustration we’ve felt over the past 25 years.

So come on, J-Roll and the gang: just win the World Series and everything will be fine!

  13. Greg B Says:

Good post. I absolutely agree that the negative stimulus is over-played. I think it is mostly attributable to an overzealous few that embrace that negative persona and do all that they can to propagate it. Kind of a chicken or the egg issue.

So maybe the answer is self-policing. I had to holler at some kid acting like he was newly purchased at the jerkstore during a 12-2 drubbing of the Nationals while we were up 8. The only reason he listened to my “Stop being a jerk” request was probably my Phillies hat, but I was surprised at its effectiveness.

Mets fan…please…get over yourself, I’ve seen as many or more ig’nant boorish A-holes on your end as over here.

  14. Krall Says:

The most overlooked fact about Philly fans, and something that drives us to react unfavorably in some situations is WE UNDERSTAND THE GAME. You don’t hear it enough from ESPN or other sports talking heads but Philly fans, Phillies fans in particular, understand the game and react to things that a lot of fans in other stadiums wouldn’t. I know I wasn’t the only one checking in on the Mets score at the game the other night. Hell I’ve had full conversations with complete strangers about every aspect of the game in the stands. We are passionate (and yeah, disgruntled) but our attitudes in the stands come from our desire to win and our understanding of what it is going to take to win. I’m a phillies fan from birth and I’ve never been ashamed to say it. I’m not a drunk a-hole from Jersey who bought a Yankees hat to match my popped collar, I’m a kid who fell asleep listening to Harry K as soon as I had my first radio.

  15. Greg B Says:

Hmmm…I’m a Phils Fan. Philly is a great city. It’s pretty dumb to rag on NYC just cause of a sports rivalry. I love to hate on their sports teams just as much as the next Phils fan, but NYC is an awesome place.

  16. Geoff Says:

I would NEVER want to live in NY….

  17. J-Man Says:

The reason free agents don’t come here is because this team doesn’t spend money on free agents, thats why this teams only won one World Series…If this teams front office was commited to winning a World Series,Aaron Rowand would still be a Phillie…Rollins is just begging to get out of town and i hope we trade him during the off season,as long as it doesn’t end up like what we got in return for Bobby Abreu.

  18. Geoff Says:

j-roll to kansas city for a centerpiece of zach grienke…

thatll teach him to run his mouth..you wanna talk your way out of town? guess what? youre going to KC now.

  19. Don M Says:

Comparing cities.. and stadiums is gay.. the Vet was worse than Shea, and nobody has any control over which stadium their team plays in..

    and..

Good post Tim.. the problem is that, as Anthony Gargano said before.. Its LAZY JOURNALISM.. anytime they can write something about Philadelphia fans, they can and do, because its an easy way for a journalist to meet their deadline..

When J-Rolls comments started last week, I was listening to ESPN950 that night.. the LockerRoom. guys were on were talking about how Philly fans have this reputation as a “tough town – tough fans”, and how Philly fans love going places and being considered “tough fans”… I think thats so old.. “passionate” is probably the best way to describe Philly fans, this stuff about being “tough” has got to stop. its just stupid

  20. Don M Says:

Again, we didn’t “trade” Bobby Abreu.. we dumped him instead of paying him $16 Million the next year.

Rowand isn’t having as good a year as Shane Victorino. so thats not really a big issue either.

  21. Brian Michael Says:

Yea, well it’s pretty easy for J-Roll to claim he tried to lure free-agents and they didn’t come since it supports his argument nicely. I’d rather ask the free agents what they think, but like J-Man said, you’re naive to think they care about anything as much as the money.

Seriously, I don’t know what J-Roll’s beef is. It is severely unprofessional to bag on your fans. Even though Derek Jeter is a douche, he’s always grovelling to fans…and that’s why he’s now the Prince of New York.

    Have some class, Jimmy.

  22. Georgie Says:

If a player’s family wants to come to a game, do they have to sit with the rest of the fans? Isn’t there some box or something to isolate them from the drunks and stuff? Don’t get me wrong, it’s not acceptable to bust on a player’s family, but what Jimmy said just doesn’t make sense to me.

  23. Richie Says:

What Jimmy is doing right now is being flat out stubborn. While digging himself a deeper hole. When he has had any flash of good play the last two days, the fans are dying to applaud him, he got his point across, there is no reason to continue on this rant and be hard-headed and stubborn and bring up asinine comments about free agents not wanting their family to be hurt by our fans like we are neandrithals or wild animals wandering around in field and attacking people. Wise up and Grow up Jimmy!!

  24. TJ Says:

How do most threads come down to Philly vs. New York? New York is a great place, the only downfall is the scent. What do you expect from the most populated city in America?

The bottom line is we aren’t little league parents, we aren’t gonna get you ice cream after you pick your ass at shortstop. If you don’t perform we aren’t gonna be satisfied but in the end we’ll still be there, ….well some of us will.

There are a bunch of senseless assholes that show up at both Shea and Citizens Bank Park, the worst I’ve heard was “F*ck New York, I hope 9-11 happens again.” That douchebag proceeded to get the shit beat out of him by some firefighter volunteers.

  25. John Cena Says:

    Five knuckle shuffle

  26. Runshouse Says:

It’s pretty whiny in here. Obviously it is the entire sports community from every major sport that has the wrong idea…

“I’m not wrong…. it’s everyone else in the world that is clueless.”

That’s a whole lot of arrogance for 1 championship in over 100 years.

Deflecting anger of J-Rolls insanely dumb comments about the people who come to see him play every day some spending a good portion of their income to do so is silly. Don’t blame the media or rivals and not Jimmy himself… it is pretty childlike.

  27. Phil Says:

Mets nation don’t act like your fans are so great. A bunch of college frat boys called my friend in Phillies gear a word I’d rather not say but it starts with an N. Then there was a fight because they were black Phillies fans. That is the most despicable thing I’ve ever heard of happening at a baseball game, so don’t act like the Mets fans are so great.

  28. Don M Says:

I’m glad that dude that said something about 9/11 got his ass kicked though

  29. stephanie Says:

ok im sorry but im a girl and a pretty small one, and i go to citizens bank at least 15 games a year, and while i’ve seen some fights and some stupid people, but i mean come on “I’ve been to the Bank enough times to know not to bring kids, girls etc.”. seriously? i’ve been to many mets/phillies game and ive seen phillies fans bother mets fans, and mets fans do it right back. So don’t go around acting like poor little mets fans get picked on, thats pretty pathetic

  30. Tommy Says:

Let us keep something in mind here as we discuss the Phillies and the Muts.
It was not to long ago when this rivalry we know barely was discussed. When the Phils were 15 games out of 1st and are nowhere near the playoffs (and Mets the same) the rivalry is less tense.

I recently moved to NY and I have attended a few Mets/Phils at Shea. (Most recently July 22. The 6 run 9th inning versus Johan. I left Shea very happy). Mets fans not so much.

Mets fans are nearly the same specimen as Phillies fans. We both hate each other.
The way I was treated for being red clad was revolting. After the game on fan yelled at my buddies and I “your city is famous from a movie about AIDS!” Which then I replied “Rocky had AIDS?” We got a kick out of it and the fan responded with a reaction similar to Tom Callahan in TommyBoy.

My point is both Philly and Mets fans are the same. We have a great sense of pride and despise losing to one another. However, I must say the Mets fans out number us when it comes to Goombas.

As far as JHole is concerned, Jason Donald is doing a terrific job in the Olympics right now and is waiting in the wings. It is only a matter of time. Unless Jimmy has the best September in the history of baseball, I wouldn’t mind clearing some salary room.

  31. TJ Says:

Bottom line is its a 2 way street. I agree that us Phillies fans aren’t exactly the model fans but what PASSIONATE sports fans are?

  32. ffff Says:

A phillies fan making fun of a ballpark? the park you play in is an absolute joke. Who the fuck likes playing in a bandbox? Yeah, your hitters so they can pat their stats but nobody else likes that POS stadium. GFYS

  33. TJ Says:

Right because when the Mets come here, every other ball is over the fence right? Our fence is like eight feet shorter than Shea. Why does the stadium only go 3/4 around the field anyway?

  34. Don M Says:

they had to leave a wind-tunnel for the smell of “too much cologne” to get out…

  35. Kennedy Says:

Theres no point in rehashing the New York vs. Philadelphia argument, it always comes down to the fact that you can’t get a cheese steak in New York. End of Story.

As for the New York vs. Philly fans, I am of two minds. Nobody can defend Yankees fans because they are the second biggest D-Bags in the sports fan world (next to Bhastin fans that keep popping up like poison ivy, if Red Sox nation was a real country it would be Canada, overly full of itself and mostly important because of the nation to the south). Back to Yankees fans, if you see someone wearing a Yankees cap, its quite likely they can tell you the name of less than 10 players in all of baseball, most of whom would play on the Yankees. They win the ignorance gold metal. Furthermore, in addition to being ignorant of baseball, the average Yankees fan is a douche. He is either a guido from Long Island, or a Guido from Jersey, or a Guido from some other locale, or some wannabe ghetto dbag who has never been to a game, or a jewish guy with a blowout and a beater trying desperately to look like a guido (minus the big gold star of david chain), or some other variety of generic NYC douche. I can’t even believe I hate Boston fans more than Yankees fans, if you had told me that 5 years ago I wouldn’t have believed you.

Mets fans, especially younger ones, have a few things going for them that make them less annoying then the average big market baseball fan. #1 (this is the biggest point), most of them have made the conscious choice not to be Yankees fans. Think about this for a second, most baseball fans will either be a fan of the team who plays in their area, or a fan of one of the teams they could watch on TV, or a fan of a team they jumped on the bandwagon of back when they were good. I went to high school in the early 2000’s in a Philly suburb, but we had a bunch of Yankees fans there because the Yankees won in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and were in the playoffs every damn year. We also had a lot of Braves fans. Mets fans have chosen not to be Yankees fans. Their team hasn’t won a championship since 1986, which is longer then most of the Mets fans I know have been alive. #2 The average Mets fan is not a rich New Yorker, they are from Queens or Brooklyn. They have a blue collar base, like the Phillies. They have their share of Guidos, but not to the exclusion of other types. For that matter, a lot of Philly fans are Guidos to, though not as large a percentage of them as Mets fans. #3 is that the average Mets fan has an average baseball IQ. He doesn’t follow the team as obsessively as a Phillies fan (nobody does), and this makes him prone to over-optimism when his team is doing well (case in point, all the idiot mets fans posting about how great their team is ignoring the extremely weak pitching they are going to see down the stretch from every pitcher not named Schoeneweis, Santana, Perez, or Pelfrey.) On the other hand, the average Mets fan does not have ignorance equivalent to the average Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Giants, or Braves fan. Also, he exists and is not as rare as the ivory billed woodpecker (Rays, Marlins, Pirates, Nationals, Royals, Orioles, A’s, etc.) I would say the tolerability and annoyingness of the Mets fan rank right in the middle between Cleveland and the White Sox.

  36. Runshouse Says:

“the average Mets fan has an average baseball IQ. He doesn’t follow the team as obsessively as a Phillies fan (nobody does), and this makes him prone to over-optimism when his team is doing well”

Really, wasn’t it Philly that gave the team the key to the city before they won a single playoff game?

This whole higher baseball IQ thing is arbitrary and obnoxious, not necessarily in that order.

  37. ChrisB Says:

Enough of this constant bickering and stereotyping of the NY fans. This thread is complaining about how philly fans are stereotyped and then we go right ahead and refer to the mets as racists, and guidos. Let’s chill out a bit here.

Back to the thread itself, I completely agree. Honestly, Philly fans are very passionate, and they aren’t like St. Louis, but I’ve been to several yankees games, and I’ll tell you, the similarity is staggering. In fact, every different baseball game I’ve gone to has seem just like a game at CBP. The whole “tough philly” thing is extremely fabricated in my mind.

To be honest, I don’t even know where this came from. J-Roll was a fan favorite, even this year, where he hasn’t been nearly as good. What’s his problem? It seems to me for every idiot fan booing a player, there’s a wolf pack guy, or one of the Howard Phans. What about everyone on this board? Are we frontrunners? We live and die by this team. I spend so much time surfing these philly sports boards. How can J-Roll expect to call me a fairweather fan and me NOT to get angry at him for it? It trivializes every time I sit down to watch a game.

It pisses me off because last year I loved this team. Now J-Roll is giving me every reason to hate it.

  38. TJ Says:

Its even funnier that J-Roll says this mid-sucking ass. He’s hitting .222 this month, with a staggering 2 RBI. MVP! MVP! MVP! Dont expect him to come up big against the Mets because he’s been terrible against our rivals this year as well. .229 average with a .250 OBP

  39. TJ Says:

“It pisses me off because last year I loved this team. Now J-Roll is giving me every reason to hate it.”

    Frontrunner? Half-joking.

  40. TJ Says:

“Look, Philadelphia is a different place,” Dawkins said. “I’ve said it a thousand times: Everybody can’t play in Philadelphia. There has to be something about you to be able to survive here. And the cats who can — may not want to.”

By no means am I an Eagles fan, Go Pack (without Favre unfortuneatley), but Dawkins is right,

  41. Don M Says:

We even BOO THE BEST… McNabb is the best QB ever in Philly… Rollins is the best SS ever in Philly…. Schmidt was the best 3b ever in Philly.. . we just BOO whoever, whenever, wherever because fans feel like they are supposed to do it

  42. ryan Says:

if you aren’t mentally strong enough to handle philly fans then good riddance. i don’t want you anyways if you are that much of a mentally fragile pussy. i wonder about these kids, when they brought home a report kid as a kid, did their parents yell at them and “boo” them so to speak, if so, did they move in with a new family because they couldn’t take the pressure. gimme a fuckin break.

  43. Richie Allen Says:

At first I favored the approach that we boo too much and have that bad Philly reputation and that we should lighten up.
But you know what ,these guys make about a gazillion times in income vs the average guy.and they are entertainment for us masses.
So now my opinion is …..if you cant handle it when we boo because you are not playing up to snuff…hit the road.
Go play in Kansas City where it’s real hell and theres no chance of winning and the fans are in a coma.

  44. ryan Says:

how come we always get criticized more than anywhere else? we pack the fuckin park every goddamn night. we should be hailed as some of the best fans in all of sports. but then again, we all know its just the media and ESPN trying to create a story and create some drama because that’s what they’re all about. they don’t give two shits about games. they promote soap operas with a general sports theme.

why doesn’t somebody criticize tampa? best record in baseball and for a crucial series with the angels they don’t attract as many fans in the whole series as the phillies do in any regular game.

  45. Bruce Says:

Brian Michael~ says..”Have some class, Jimmy.” I thought that was Jimmy’s request of the tough…er..passionate Phillies fans. (chuckle)

  46. Mike D Says:

Don M. Phillies fans aren’t the only ones to boo the best, for example Yankees fans boo A-Rod, who has been THE BEST player in baseball for the past decade. Fact is when you when you play poorly or don’t hustle you deserve to get booed whether it is Philly, NY, Boston, Chicago, or even Florida.

  47. Richie Allen Says:

Come to think of it Pittsburgh would be great for JRoll..They never pay for a good player, never support baseball ,nobody in the stands,so theres no one to boo him.
Maybe he doesnt deserve US….ever think about it that way?

  48. Jesse Says:

Rollins has never been an exceptionally great player. He’s got speed and recent power. He’s usually a Shane Victorino type numbers guy with 10-15 HR and 40 SB .270 AVG. However, last year he played out of his mind hitting 30 HR (though he did hit 25 the year before) and slugging a ridiculous .530, way above his normal numbers. He’s also on pace for 200 less at-bats this season. I think we just have to accept that J Rol isn’t the god like figure we saw last year, and just let him be.

  49. Bonezy Says:

The fact of the matter is the Mets will NEVER live up to the Yankees and they have to look for some way to vent. So they come onto this blog and TRY to get under our skin. Mets are the biggest bunch of pansies this side of the Mississippi.

Tim, very well said. We do get the ribbing a lil more than every other city in sports.

  50. ChrisB Says:

Hah Tj, I guess it sounds like I’m frontrunning, but actually the phillies were in a much worse position this year last year. I still loved them. They all seemed like terrific characters.

Nowadays, J-Roll has insulted me and pissed me off a bit. It doesn’t have anything to do with winning, just my perception as a fan.

Personally, I’ve chilled out a bit more about this whole mess, and instead think Rollins should follow the footsteps of Chase. Just shut the hell up and play. Do your talking on the field, not on “Best Damn Sports Show Period.”

  51. NJ Says:

    http://www.sportsline.com/columns/story/10941787

The truth about Phillies fans… Too many give us a bad name.

  52. Steve Says:

Everyone rags on Eagles fans for booing Donovan McNabb, what about Jets fans who show up to the NFL Draft every year and boo their draft pick regardless of who it is? Phillies fans started booing Jimmy Rollins, but what about the Red Sox fans who arbitrarily decided a few weeks ago that Manny-being-Manny was no longer a justifiable excuse for his actions? Philadelphia fans have called for the head of a coach now and then, but what about Mets fans who ran Willie Randolph out of town just two years removed from taking them within a game of the World Series? There was an incident a few months ago where a Yankees fan KILLED a Red Sox fan intentionally, there has never been such an incident that I’m aware of involving a Philadelphia fan doing such a thing to any Penguins, Cowboys, or Mets fan. What about Cubs fans, who ruined Steve Bartman’s life based on the unforgivable crime of making a split-second decision to catch a foul ball, something that any fan would have instinctively done? It is beyond ridiculous that Philly fans get such a terrible reputation when other fans are the same if not worse.

  53. NJ Says:

The Cubs can do no wrong this year, the Mets seem to have some pedostol not even the Yankees are on. It’s tough or Yankees fans as there so much of a legacy with that team and their so use to success and expectation which came from Steinbrenner.

Phils fans are unappreciatives sure but we demand a blue collar team and those guys becomes heroes, those who showboat should be prepared to take constant hounding by the fans. Cards fans have been hailed as the benchmark for good fans and you know what… You look down that line-up and you have guys who work for their success on the diamond, even Pujols who has as much talent as anyone in the game. The Phils roster isn’t stocked with guys giving their all to be ball players, their ballplayers expecting success without putting in the work.

  54. Mark T Says:

I’ve been a Phillies fan since I was 8 years old, and this is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. To claim Philly fans are frontrunners is simply ridiculous. If that were the case, we would stop showing up and expecting so much from the city that provides so much underperformance and heartbreak. The worst part of it is, that thanks to his comments I find myself wanting Rollins to fail while still rooting on my team. I wish we could ship him back to California, where the fans can do the wave every time he grounds out on the first pitch of the game and he can be comfortable.
