Utley’s Blast Lifts Phils To Series Win
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, August 11, 2008 12:21 AM
It was a game the Phillies really needed, and they got it, thanks to their best hitter.
Chase Utley hit a two-run home run in the seventh, breaking a 3-3 tie and ultimately giving the Phils a 6-3 win over the Pirates. With the win and a Mets loss, the Phils are now in first place by two games over the Mets and 2.5 games over the Marlins.
Jamie Moyer surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings, a pretty standard outing for Moyer, who lately has been pretty unstoppable. A four-man collective patched up the win with Brad Lidge sitting out with shoulder problems — new pickup Scott Eyre got the win after getting one out.
It was also a patchwork game offensively. Carlos Ruiz had two hits and scored on a crazy, error-filled bunt by Moyer. Jimmy Rollins added an RBI sac fly, and Greg Dobbs knocked an RBI double — yet another pinch hit and pinch-hit RBI by Mr. Hobbs.
Moyer’s start is the fifth consecutive quality start for the Phillies. Suddenly a potent five-man group is building in the rotation; hopefully this stretch will continue, or at least, stay on course.

Thank god Moyer got the Ashburn. I was afraid maybe Utley or Ruiz were going to get it. Moyer deserved it simply for delivering probably the most entertaining play of the season. Seeing him shove that ump to the ground was probably the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
August 11th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Of course. Just look at that picture of Whitey running the bases. I’m sure he knocked over a few umpires in his days.
August 11th, 2008 at 1:34 am
haha that was so fun to watch. In fact, I think I’ll go find a replay of that.
August 11th, 2008 at 7:50 am
that was hilarious mainly because the umpire was twice the size of moyer ! Good win, Ruiz was brilliant and Dobbs and Chase came through in the clutch.
August 11th, 2008 at 8:04 am
happ watch: 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 hits allowed, 10ks
August 11th, 2008 at 8:15 am
Way to go Happ-y!
Good game yesterday by Carlos Ruiz! He actually won the Player of the Game award on CSN. It would be great to see more consistent production from the bottom of the order.
Moyer leveled that ump. Poor ump probably could have been standing in right-field and Moyer still would have run into him.
Let’s go Kendrick. Let’s go Phils! We know you’re good for 6-8 runs today with “The Kid” pitching.
Let’s just hope LOL’s shoulder is OK!
August 11th, 2008 at 8:23 am
can someone post a video of that play by moyer?
August 11th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Heard a dude from MLB on WIP 610am this morning saying that Moyer could be punished for bowling over the ump. WTF? The ump was in Jamie’s way. It looked to me to be incidental contact. I laughed my ass off though ;^)
August 11th, 2008 at 9:22 am
They have a copy of the Moyer video on thefightins.com. I must have watched it 10 times

I don’t think anything can happen to him.. I umpire baseball, and if you are the umpire at 1st base you are supposed to be at a 45 degree angle from 1st base, and about 12-15 feet away.. Some places list that angle at 90-degrees, but its the corner of the bag that points towards Right-Center, and you should be about 15 feet away.
he looks to be a little closer to the pitchers mound than the outfield grass, and he looks to be a little bit closer to the bag than he should be.
Sorry for boring people to death with that… great hustle by Moyer though, and another quality start by him!!
August 11th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Don, I don’t see any way he can get suspended either. It wasn’t intentional, he was watching the ball and more or less “ran into” the ump, and the ump was also watching the ball and standing in a bad spot. It was harmless, and worth a good chuckle. Okay, lots of good chuckles. The suspensions are levied for intentional contact with umpires during arguments, etc.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:03 am
The umpire did not get out of the way, and assumed Moyer was out. To suspend him for that would be a disgrace.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I was wondering how this “suspension talk” got started….. some dude on WIP called in and said the Moyer could be suspended… Gotta love those WIP callers!!!

Yo.. and I saw the Dark Knight yesterday.. definitely leaves a lot open.. definitely going to be an awesome sequel.
In the paper today, they said Johnny Depp as a possible Riddler, Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin.. Im going to start waiting in line for that to come out
August 11th, 2008 at 11:23 am
The thid movie will be awesome as long as robin isnt in it.
love taht movie, cant stop thinking about how awesome it is.
August 11th, 2008 at 11:50 am
OMG it was awesome. Heath Ledger deserves an award for his performance. I can’t wait until the next one but I wonder which villian they will cast. And Geoff, I couldn’t bear Robin being in it either.
August 11th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Unless Robin is played by some really hot chick that stays mostly naked throughout the film.. I agree, that Robin should not be part of the next movie
August 11th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
“Unless Robin is played by some really hot chick that stays mostly naked throughout the film.. I agree, that Robin should not be part of the next movie”
Well, Robin is a dude. Maybe we can have a hot naked batgirl though.
August 11th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
yea I know Robin is a dude.. but if the director feels like artistically-interpreting Robin in another way… im just saying..
August 11th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I’m not a fan of comic book hero-inspired movies although it’s an ideal summer vacation movie for the adolescents and the young at heart. However, it’s peculiar that no one here mention that it was Heath Ledger’s last film. He died tragically young (age 28) from drug overdose in his NY apartment. That’s sad.
August 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Rumor has it that he got even more whack-in-the-head after playing this role.. because he’s a “method actor”.. and lives all the roles that he will play before the movie starts, they said he stopped sleeping and just got all crazy.. and then he OD’d
August 11th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Yeha, marlon brando was one of the first well-known method actors. you can see why he went crazy through his brilliant performance.
August 11th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Does Robin have good power numbers against lefties or are you guys on the wrong site?
August 11th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Robin is hitting lots of bad guys, with 12 bombs desfused, and 17 saves.. He could do more, he’s got all the tools
August 11th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Bruce, nobody mentioned Ledger’s death because…it’s common knowledge – everyone knows he’s dead. He should still get an award for his performance, though.
As far as a naked Robin is concerned…it would be rather disturbing quite frankly. Even if you duct-taped his junk, it would still be horrendous. A hot naked Batman groupie would be more acceptable.
August 11th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
The only other way I’d be for Batman & Robin duo is if Myers plays Batman and Bruntlett shaves off his beard and dons a mask to play Robin. Both of them clothed, of course…well maybe Myers can show off his bitch tits and man-flab by going shirtless, but Bruntlett has to wearing the Robin get-up. He’d look so cute!
