Would You Participate In Campaign Cheer?
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, August 19, 2008 01:07 PM
So We Should Be GM’s launched “Campaign Cheer” a few days back. Remember? Jimmy Rollins called us “front-runners,” then said we don’t support our team fully? Then there was a backlash? Then GM Carson and Corey came up with the ingenious idea to cheer everything for the Phillies at tonight’s game?
Well the ingenious idea spread like wildfire. First we Phloggers picked it up (Hugging Harold Reynolds, Crashburn Alley, The 700 Level, The Good Phight, The Fightins’ and the Nation all featured the idea). Then the mainstream blogs started to catch it (Deadspin, Epic Carnival). Then the MSM grabbed it (Philly.com). And today Carson was on 950 AM ESPN Radio, talking about “Campaign Cheer.”
Suddenly, the campaign that started as half-sarcastic slam has morphed into a real movement.
The question is — will you cheer?
Going or not to tonight’s game against the Nationals, will you cheer everything — the strikeouts, the groundouts, the announcements, the errors, the bad pitching? Or are you still bitter from Rollins’ comments/the team’s poor play?
So how would you react? To cheer, or not to cheer?

I’d cheer everyone but Rollins. Even if he got a hit, I would boo him…just to prove I’m not a frontrunner.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
No. they went 2-5 on a critical road trip, and barely scored any runs against the padres, who are a horrible team. This team stinks right now. They really do. Whoever wins the east will get mauled in the playoffs.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I will still be cheering on Thursday night, when I go to the game. But if I’m alone in this pursuit I may give up after a few innings.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I would cheer for the entire team, because Rollins was right with all of his comments!
August 19th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Everyone but Rollins.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
I’ll cheer when the owners sell.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
i’m glad this caught on
August 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Anyone going should chant “M-V-P!, M-V-P!, M-V-P!” allll night long..
August 19th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Unfortunately, I bet only 5,000 or so of the 40,000+ fans going tonight have even heard of this campaign..
If it got started the day after Rollins made the comments, it would have picked up more steam.. but I bet he gets a standing Ovation or something if he strikesout, or Flys out to shallow left, jogging with his head down all the way to 1st as he’s done all year.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I hope he gets booed worse than philly has ever booed any of its players before. like, reaaally loud.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Booing has proven not to help. That’s why Jimmy spoke up. I don’t agree with everything he said, but he made some good points. If you claim to love this team as I do, then why not cheer your butts off for the Phils…including J-Roll. I understand all the negativity, I feel it too and vent it often on my blog, but it’s time for a change. Let’s give applause and positivity a chance and maybe we’ll be pleasantly pleased with the outcome.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Boston is negative, they boo, they won. new york has won in its history, they boo, theyre much more negative than we are. same with the white sox. actually the ONLY exception is the cardinals. its ok to Boo. i personally dont do it but its really not that big of a deal. that these guys cant handle it is REPULSIVE.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
thats a BULLSHIT excuse and a BULLSHIT argument.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
I am a big fan of the Campaign and would participate if I was able to go to the game.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Philly has a strong and rich history of booing everyone. Pro-bowl quarterbacks, all-star closers, the redcoats and tonight we will start a new chapter-booing nl mvps
August 19th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I agree with the campaign. I like the idea. Rollins was right, he just shouldn’t have used the word front runner.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Although to be fair, 10 000 loses would make anyone bitter
August 19th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
do u want me to keep rubbing it in?
August 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
haha.. people used to boooooooo Billy Wagner when he hit 99mph instead of 100..
August 19th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Phil.. how did work go the other day??
August 19th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Cheer it all – what’s the worst that could happen – we lose???? I don’t agree with what Rollins / Howard said, but something’s gotta give – can’t take the apathy from the recent level of play. So cheer away!!!
August 19th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Everyone’s favorite, Angelo Cataldi wrote about that in today’s METRO..
Rollins, when asked if he was surprised by the negative reaction to his comments said, “Yes, very surprised.”
BUT. BUT. BUT.
….If he was so surprised, why did he preface his insult with “I might catch some flak for saying this..”
I personally think that he’s just trying to draw attention away from everyone else, and onto himself.. he needs to step his game up, but he’s got all eyes on him right now.. taking all that pressure of his teamates for the next few games. Hopefully it works and they start scoring 5+ runs per game again
August 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I called out Don M. haha
August 19th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
I’ll be there tonight, cheering every warm up toss he makes. Maybe he just needs to be adored to not swing at the first pitch and ground out.
In all fairness he isn’t the only one to make the point about us as a fan-base but anything that shakes this team out of the slump (even if it is a bitterly sarcastic cheering crowd) i will gladly be a part of
August 19th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
It really seems like he didn’t mean to say ‘front-runner,’ that he meant something more like ‘demanding’. Front-runner has all the connotations of not giving a shit if your team loses, but then coming back when times are good again, and I think he knows, after years here, that that’s not the case.
That said, he’s a guy that’s given us years of service. He’s had a bad year this year, unequivocally, and it’s been underscored by an attitude that seemed like something we’d never see from him as late as May of this year. But the one thing that we as Philly fans need to learn to do is remember the past a little bit, to grant the guys who’ve brought us to where we are now (one of the best teams in the NL, even after this summerlong gag) an exception. We’re never gonna stop booing or being outright dickheads, but this you’re-only-as-good-as-your-last-at-bat attitude has got to be crushing to the players. In the end, skin thickened by $15 mil contracts or not, they’ve got to feel something.
That said, this was absolutely not the time for him to start whining. The rules about speaking in baseball are simple: when you perform on the field, you can perform in front of the mics, too.
Go Phils. Please, please stop sucking.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Who cares what JRo says or thinks. It’s not like he’s out solving world hunger or finding the cure for cancer. He’s a baseball player.
The bottom line is performance. A good performance gets cheers and a bad performance gets boos. If these guys need cheers to get them going then what are we paying them for? Their astronomical salaries should be motivation enough.
Forget the millions the likes of Burrell and Howard make, how many of us here make the major league minimum with all the perks? I venture to say not many of us. If making tons of jingle isn’t enough to get motivated then they deserve to be booed.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I hope this campaign thing actually works. It would be hilarious to watch all the fans go nuts for the usual Ruiz GIDP or Howard K. I think with the fliers being passed around combined with simple word of mouth we’ll be able to notice a significant difference in the crowd tonight.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I love the idea. CHEER AWAY
August 19th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Resorting to gimmicks is never a good sign. Good teams don’t need tricks or slight of hand. Why not just sign Chriss Angel to a contract?
August 19th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
This weekend we should have Campaign Wipe Their Noses or how about Campaign Atta Boy or maybe Campaign Warm Their Milk?
Come on, they’re paid handsomely to do a job. Stop the sniffling and get the job done.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
“resorting to gimmicks”? you mean like a manager getting thrown out of a game to excite his team. Sorry I care more about wins then acusations of gimmicks
August 19th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
off topic… anyone know anything good or bad about Self-Adhesive laminent tile flooring..
I heard its bad for bathrooms with showers because of the steam.. and the sticky sutff underneath gets moist and doesn’t stick anymore…
Im trying to do a quick-fix in my bathroom so it looks nice cause I don’t have the time or interest in tearing out the actual tile right now and replacing it all
August 19th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
DM – As a quick fix self adhesive is fine. Just make sure the sub-floor is free of water or dampness and free of any previous mastic. Also try to keep standing water off of it. Heating the bottom of the tile slightly with a heat gun (hair dryer will work) will also make the self adhesive tackier. Just make sure you have a clean, dry surface when using the new tile. Also depending on tile being used you might have a level/height issue as the original tile is installed with mastic which the new tile won’t have.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
It is time for the Phillie faithful to make home field a real advantage–If you are hung up on the dismal franchise history -there is no help for you, but this Phillie team needs very little to get over the hump–look at the Rockies last year.I do not know the answer, but I suspect that the fans have not helped in a number of years
August 19th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
We are still so very close to 1st place in the division….I dont see why most bloggers here are so negative all the time….J Roll is correct…Philly fans in all sports go too far….players success goes in cycles..teams go in short cycles.
.the mets won quite a few in a row to get into first..but look at their bullpen( talk about sucking.)
its now our turn.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
P.S. why cant CB Park become an asset to our players,a place where opposing players hate to play our team.
Instead its a place where no one wants to play for the Phillies, wake up…
August 19th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
“We are still so very close to 1st place in the division….I dont see why most bloggers here are so negative all the time….J Roll is correct…Philly fans in all sports go too far”
I completely agree, although I don’t call myself a Philly fan but rather a Phillies fan. I have a different favorite team in all major sports rather than the one in Philly.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Other than the Phillies that is. But Citizens Bank Park is too small for any pitchers to be intrigued to come here and hitters probably cant stand being criticized by fans when they dont perform.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Ill take the phillies and the flyers. i dont pay attention to the nba so rule that out. if you made me choose in the nfl id say the steelers because even though i grew up here, ive learned to hate the eagles more than any other team. Brian Westbrook: youre too good for this team, you should have left them years ago. you deserve a chance at a championship, you deserve better.
but i also dont care all that much about the nfl either.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
people like derek lowe are the only ones whod want to come here.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Tonight is the beginning of a massive offensive tear by the phillies.
personally, i’m not a big boo guy. i’m sure j roll gets killed with boos tonight at the game.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Hey Fenway isnt very large…no problem getting pitchers to go there.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
theyre going to just have to do that. just…explode for 6 weeks. demolish teams. thats the most realistic shot they have. i dont think they can treat water anymore. they have to swim…
August 19th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Hope J Roll has ear drum insurance in place
August 19th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Richie Allen…Boston pitchers are home grown or given a ton of money, hence why they are there.
Also I have been to games where the heckling (of opposing teams) is out standing but at other games everyone justs sits there quietly and doesnt get in to it.
August 19th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
i say we go with a asshole chant for jimmy and ruin his night then forget it by wednesday
August 19th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
To me the whole atmosphere at the ballpark has changed since CBP opened. Where going to the Vet was primarily for watching a game, CBP seems to be more of party central that just happens to have a ballgame going on.
Granted I’m an old gray beard and probably stuck in the past a little too much.
August 19th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
On Daily News Live few minutes ago they were questioning Jimmy about the whole booing situation and Leslie Gudel said “I think there’s a guy passing around cheer signs.” So campaign cheer is growing by the minute.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
I’ve been a Phils fan for 55 years and I have to admit Rollins is right. However when I am at the park it has been my observation that the majority of the fans are not booing at all. Yes there are always a number of big mouth Jackasses in any crowd, but it has always been that way. Unfortunately they are the ones to get noticed! I also think he is protecting an under performing team by taking the heat himself. The fans memory’s are very long in Philly and he has now opened the door for more abuse in the future.
August 19th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
campaign cheer???1? pfft. take that shit back to soft ass st. louis. that ain’t philly. and thank god
August 19th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
also, i would like to revise my brett myers prediction. he has one more year left on his deal. i think that makes it really easy to move him if the phillies eat some of his last year.
August 19th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
but, since its only one more year. its also really not such a bad idea to eat the contract and hold onto him for a year, see what he can do.
August 19th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
so if hes pitching well why not hold onto him? i dunno. they still needanother guy in there. trade jimmy to the angels for jered weaver or one of their pitchers.
August 20th, 2008 at 12:29 am
Trade Jimmy for a corner outfielder.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:54 am
Yeah hes not going to want to stay around here, you can tell from his interview yesterday. He got booed hard it seemed on TV. but they censored them although they did a terrible job censoring them.
anyone from the game last night? it sounded like he got it pretty good.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:11 am
I agree with what FRED said earlier in the post..
CBP is really just a destination for people.. instead of going to the bar and watching the Phillies.. they go get drunk at the Ballpark and watch a few minutes of baseball in between their drinking and drama.
Down in the Wachovia parking lot before the Flyers-Devils when the Orange clinched a playoff berth (best Flyers game ever).. I was saying that to my buddies, that the college crowd (im just a few years removed from it..) but that the college crowd is going to be all about the Phillies now, and the Eagles will take a back seat in terms of the tailgaiting and all that stuff… THOSE fans are frontrunners.. Just like all Mets fans
August 20th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Yeah thats basically correct. The college crowd abandoned the eagles and has shifted to the phillies. What I really like is the college crowd hasnt really infiltrated the flyers network. the flyers are different. you can tell people who havent followed them their whole lives and you do get some yuppie college people once in a while but the games are so expensive its usually limited to legit fans or businesses. Theres nothing really fake about a big-time flyers game. there is at atmosphere in that place thats just different.
i feel that half the people walking down ashburn alley dont even know where they are. rollins has to learn how to speak about such things. he cant tell that. he knows there are die-hards but he probably thinks there are less of them than there really are.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:26 am
People don’t want to pay $50 a ticket to see the Flyers unless they follow them.. they play so many home games.. its not like the NFL, 8 home games and people think its worth it to pay $200 for a standing-room-only seat, when you can get a much better view from your own couch.
The Phillies cheap seats are low enough that people can go down there as many times as they want.. my personal favorite are the people that buy tickets.. but leave in the 4th to go sit at McFadden’s drinking…
August 20th, 2008 at 10:32 am
yeah i know. or the ones that still dont get the concept that if you go to get crab fries youre going to miss 2-3 innings.
another colllege thing to do is when they stand in line for the sake of standing in a line. for instance: one conecssion sells hot dogs, chicken fingers, fries, etc. the ADJACENT concession, with a DIFFERENT sign and name, sell the SAME food. one of them has a HUGE line, the other one has no line but sells the same food. when you walk over to the empty one and get food and leave they look puzzled and upset.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:34 am
i also think its time to chekc the fastball velocity when i go on saturday. havent done that in a while.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:39 am
haha… after probably 4 years off I was at Reading a couple years ago.. little kids hitting like 45mph on the gun, so I stepped up talking smack to my fiance and her family and all that I would hit at least 70mph..
Jumped right up there.. threw my arm out on the first pitch… 48mph…( I used to throw 55-60mph when I was 12-13 years old) after that first one I couldn’t throw anymore. my arm still hurts to this day, like a never-ending case of Tendonitis..
Lesson Learned… ALWAYS STRETCH BEFORE YOU THROW ANYTHING!!
August 20th, 2008 at 10:42 am
yeah you gotta stretch it out. i need to check the fastball and the cutter. then go get in shape for the hardball season.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:42 am
that starts in march because i missed this one
August 20th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
you guys are so right about the bandwagoners and the college crowd at the phillies. that’s why when games are sold out and you see 10,000 empty seats in the 5th inning. they don’t give a shit about watching and breaking down the game. it’s a night out in town for those people. they get blind drunk and walk around all night. they probably don’t even watch most of the games on TV.
