Braves Bushwhack Myers; Lead Remains
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, September 25, 2008 06:13 AM
Brett Myers didn’t step up in his biggest start of the year; instead, Brett Myers is looking eerily like the pitcher who failed to the point of a minor league demotion. The Phillies lost, 10-4, to the Braves, but remained 1.5 games ahead of the Mets in the NL East, as they lost an extra-inning contest to the Cubs.
Myers was hit hard in the first inning, then in the third. In the fifth he allowed four more runs before being pulled for Chad Durbin, who let another two score. Myers was missing with his curveball and throwing soft fastballs. The game echoed Myers’ last start. Suddenly, the starter who was mowing down offenses regularly is almost gone from sight. This is not good news for now, and for what could occur soon.
Of course, the Phillies pulled the game to a tie, thanks to a Ryan Howard home run, his league-leading 47th. Chase Utley also hit a homer, his 33rd. But the rest of the offense was absent. Jayson Werth had another 0-fer; Jimmy Rollins had no hits despite getting on base twice; Chris Coste left three on base. The latter is coming up tremendously short when he’s playing — not only is his offense suffering, but Coste, as Myers’ personal catcher, is part of two horrendous consecutive starts.
There’s not too much to say about this game other than what’s been said. The Braves railed Myers, the offense couldn’t catch up, too many parts shriveled in the spotlight. That’s the Phils’ Achilles heel: They can’t build a big lead in the standings; once they grab the lead, they die. Luckily for them, the Mets couldn’t seize the light. The rivals have a game in hand tomorrow, and will turn to their Myers — Pedro Martinez — to give his best start of the season. He’ll face Rich Harden. It is possible, with three games to play, the Phils could have a two-game lead in the NL East.

I went to the game last night. Had to leave after the 5th because I just couldn’t take the stress, but mostly couldn’t take the fans booing the phils coming off the field. I know it was a backbreaking game, and Myers was not even close to pitching an adequate game, and there were a few defensive missteps. But, come on – We need to cheer them on, through the good and the bad – no excuses. This roller-coaster ride is what baseball is all about, and I can’t accept fans that are going to boo them obnoxiously when they lose, and act like a super fan when they win. So, for the last homestand – GO PHILS!!!!!!!!!
September 25th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Did I mention David Wright is the biggest piece of garbage known to man kind?
September 25th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Lucky… If the Mets loose tonight it’s pretty much in the bag go Rich Harden!
Too many Phils fans give the best of us a bad name… Damn shame
September 25th, 2008 at 8:42 am
aren’t you a Mets fan RiVLez?
September 25th, 2008 at 8:50 am
Yea, hes a Mets fan but Wright struck out in the 9th with a guy on third, no one out.
September 25th, 2008 at 8:56 am
Sorry lilgartrn but thats Bullshit! The whole team wasn’t getting BOOed it was the pitchers who came up very small last night….it was the stupid double switches by our poor excuse for a manager….it was the fact that this team doesn’t seem to want to take control of this division. This is it! 3 games to play and now is not the time to take a dip on the roller coaster. They need to wake up, take care of their own business, and not have to rely on the god damn Mets losing every night! We are playing the worst team in baseball this weekend. No excuses, no ifs, ands, or buts, JUST WIN!!!
September 25th, 2008 at 8:57 am
I saw the game to its futile end – Myer’d in muck. Later, my hearing was acute trying to listen to the static of 660 AM and the Mets who only got one in the eighth and wanting the Cubs to break the tie in the top of the ninth. I arrived home in time to watch the fireworks with the Met fans on TV going nuts while Murphy sat on third base in the bottom of the ninth, then the Cubs two-out pounding of the ball in the 10th. At least their game was interesting but I’ll take the loss. I just hate to move along in the season with no movement by the Phils in their standings other then the default loss by the Mets. Let’s shut down the Nats on Friday!
September 25th, 2008 at 9:11 am
That was totally disgraceful. I cant deal with this guy anymore. Seriously, I dont care if hes hot sometimes because when he isnt hes not even a 5th starter. That was terrible last night. Lets see how he does in teh playoffs if they even get there. If they cant beat the nats and win this division, I dont want to see like half these guys back here again. Disgraceful. Real teams put it away, seal the deal. The phillies always waiver until the last day or two. They better get it done on saturday when i go to the game. PERIOD. Clinch on saturday, rest hamels on sunday. no excuses. you have to win tomorrow and saturday and hope the mets lose tongiht.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:11 am
I think the Muts and Phils have a daily coin-flip to see who wants the division less. On nights like last night the coin actually lands on its side and both teams lose.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Come on Dennis thats pure front runner talk! Yes there were times in the year they needed to take care of business and were failing putting the season in jepordy but they’ve one 3/4 of the games in Sept when it looked all but over. No player on that team should be booed tonight and its ridiculous its a regular occurance.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:14 am
anyone else worried about the possibility of a double header on sunday? or do you think they’d push the game to monday… or if (somehow) the game is meaningless will they just let us skip it? (fingers crossed)…
a quote from the players ball (chappelle show) comes to mind here…
“what can i say about the [phillies] that hasn’t already been said about afghanistan? [they] look bombed out and depleted”
i’ll take the muts collapsing again but if FO thinks this can happen every year then they need to be replaced ASAP. we wont make it out of the first round if we cant get wins with our 1-2 pitchers…
September 25th, 2008 at 9:18 am
We all feel they should seal the deal and it’s tough especially when you’ve one so many games recently losses are innevitable. Geoff man what your saying is disgraceful, sure Myers has been lit up in his last two starts but prior to that he was the third most dominant pitcher in the NL after the all-star break.
I swear some of you guys are so stuck in your own opinions you forget what the games about. No team has the right to win and we’re lucky the Phils are so close to it.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Utley being my favorite Philly in a long time has been getting a break all year from me and alot of other people.
Last night in the 7th with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd he made a very stupid and costly mistake when we needed runs the most. On that shot down the 1st base line that Kotchman made a great play for Utley did not get out of the box until Kotchman dove for it, I guess he thought it was foul but this time of year he has to be huslting to 1st. Then we have bases loaded one out for Werth.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:23 am
This weather can cause big problems this weekend. The Phils should have wrapped it up by Saturday but I do not think that will be the case now. Monday is the day designated for the 1 game playoff. (if necessary)
September 25th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Looking at the boxscore after the game, I noticed Durbin’s 2 runs allowed in the 5th were unearned due to the error but Eyre’s 1 run charged to him on that 3-run homer he gave up was earned?
Wouldn’t all of them be unearned because Durbin got a ground ball (oooopppsss…. Ryan..) and a then a strikeout which would have ended the innning? Just curious… That inning just killed them.
Tomorrow’s another day. A better day
September 25th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Did anyone catch the Interview with Davey Lopes during last nights game. He said something I thought was interesting. When asked about the off season..
He said they can pick up a center fielder they would like to move Vic to right and Werth to left. It sounds like there’s a good chance Pat the Bat isn’t coming back.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:29 am
How about both of our teams suck so bad and have so many holes that we should just give the division to the Marlins. We both suck, seriously.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Dennis, I’m not arguing that they didn’t play on their A-game last night, but find me a great team in any AL/NL division that hasn’t lost a few tough ones in the last few weeks (even the Cubs got rocked with Zambrano against the Cards 2 wks ago, and I’m sure the Wrigley fans didn’t give him the caustic reception Myers received). He truly pitched a bad game, and the pen was not stellar, but I have to support them in good and bad and have confidence in their ability to reach the post, which I think we can do!
September 25th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Come on NJ! I’m a front-runner? Stop drinking the Kool-Aid buddy and wake the f*ck up!
September 25th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Both the Mets and the Phillies don’t deserve to even go to the playoffs. The Phillies offense is so terrible at times and then the Mets bullpen is absolutely horrendous and blew 29 saves this year. We both are garbage. We sit here and argue over which piece of garbage is better than the other. In the end we are all just garbage.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:35 am
And enough with comparing us to other fans(Wrigley…). This is Philadelphia, that’s the way it is, What are we suppose to do stand up and cheer when we let up 6 runs in an inning to a team that is dead in the water in the biggest game of the year. We pay good money to watch pampered million dollar athletes perform and we expect them to play their absolute best.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:37 am
And shut up RiVLez! We are going to surpass 90 wins, we have more of a right to be in the playoffs then the Dodgers in that poor excuse for a division and the Brewers with their 7-15 September record.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:38 am
RiVLez, speak for your own team. I don’t find the Phillies garbage at all. Do I think they’re a championship teamm? No. But definitely not garbage. I’ve seen garbage baseball from the Phils in the 90’s, that was garbage.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:38 am
shane woulda kicked some ass last night given the chance
September 25th, 2008 at 9:39 am
And yes, I used the word garbage 4 times in that post.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:41 am
Geezzz….such whining…. look at the White Sox and their incredibly weak division. My other team, the Tigers, just solidifyed last place in it last night. (Bet no one wants Leyland now..)
The Phils and, em, Mets are both solid teams compared to most in MLB.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Am awake dude, sure would like to win every game and it’s tough when the top of the rotation isn’t dominating but you have to live with it, this team has won 10 out of the last 13 so cut them a break. On a 10 game loosing streak maybe you boo but I don’t get why there’s this kneejerk boo every time a players on a cold streak or a pitcher gives up a run and for some Phills fans it seems 162 wins wouldn’t be enough.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:46 am
nicely put NEPA yet still so many fans here expect nothing short of what is not the best team in baseball dominating.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:49 am
yeah idk why everyone is bitching, were gonna win 90 games this year. since when is that bad?
September 25th, 2008 at 9:54 am
10 out of 13 is very good, of course it was 10 out of 11 but thats a different story. Look it’s my right to Boo, I’m also one of the loudest people cheering during good times too. I don’t wanna argue with other Phils fans but I just can’t stand when people get angry at booing….It happens everywhere, GET OVER IT!
September 25th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Hey, if your ass is in the stadium seats, your fan enough for me. Boo all you want.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Thank you NEPA! And my ass has been in them stadium seats for more than 30 games this year. I’ve seen some great times and some not so great times and it’s been fun. NOW LET’S WIN THIS THING!!!
September 25th, 2008 at 10:01 am
Yea, I don’t make a big deal out of the booing. If players are playing bad they get booed. If they hit a big HR they’re met with 40,000 people cheering and going crazy with their rally towels. A season with 162 games has a ton of ups and downs, this season has had more ups.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:02 am
You guys who complain about the booing are ridiculous. Were you not watching the same game as everyone else? In a situation where you need to win and you lose that is not called championship baseball and anything short of a championship just isn’t gonna cut it in this town these days. Most Phillies fans are so desperate for the team to win a championship. We all see how other teams win championships and know that is not how the Phillies like to do it. We are all still excited to see the Phillies in the position they are now and of course would rather be a team like this than a bad team, but the eye of most fans is on that ultimate prize.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Crowds boo. Theyve booed and heckled LONG before there ever were sports for the general public to watch.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:07 am
instead of commenting on all these other posts.. im just throwing this out there… two weeks ago we were trailing and did’t know if we’d make the playoffs, we just won like 10 of 11 or something before this recent two game slide… everyone CHILL out.. obviously the team wants to make the playoffs.. and yes we can all question Manuel’s moves when they dont work, but its the players on the field that make him look good or not.. when he pinch-runs for Burrell and people complain… but then you see what Golson can do on the bases, … its way too easy to bitch and complain about the Phillies.. lets try to be positive for the remaining 3 games.. I’m a HUGE Cubs fan for the next few days!!
I think Myers is gone after this season, same with Burrell.. these guys can’t be counted on, and they seem to have the biggest peaks and valleys on the entire roster…meanwhile, they are suppossed to be the leaders of this team..
I like Vic in center, but they don’t get to use his arm strength enough out there, if they can add a legit CF, we would have a GREAT defensive outfield, cutting off extra-base hits, keeping runners from going 1st-to-3rd, etc.. but lets wait for the offseason for all that talk
September 25th, 2008 at 10:07 am
No. 1 priority for 2009: A TOP STARTING PITCHER
September 25th, 2008 at 10:09 am
My point is there’s too much booing, the players are critisized for pressing but the fans are pressing for a championship. Who knows what effect the fans really have on the players but the level and regularity of booing at CBP just seems to much for the teams good and at the end of the day a more confident teams more likely to go deep.
I’m not saying don’t boo just make sure it’s for the right reasons at the right time.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:10 am
I have been to 6 games so far this year including last night. The Phillies are 1-5 in those games. The teams I saw them play this year were garbage. The Nats on Opening Day, Giants, Reds, Braves. The only game they won was the Pirates and that was an ugly game. I’ve gone to many Opening Days including the last 3 years and have yet to see them win one. Went to the Division Game 1 last year. I swear I am one of the most cursed fans. All I want when I go to a game is to cheer my team on and see them win a good game. I know it can’t happen all the time, but man I’d like to see it happen in person every once and a while. I got tickets to Division Game 1 this year if they go to the playoffs. Should I even show up?
September 25th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Yea, it doesn’t feel right talking about the offseason right now, but Davey Lopes made it sound last night like the Phils are definitely not bringing Burrell back. He almost blatantly said it.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:11 am
I think complaining about the guys that complain about everyone else booing is a joke..
Hamels, Victorino, Werth, Durbin, etc. . these guys that we all want them to keep here for a while.. you think they like playing on pins-and-needles every inning not wanting to hear 40,000+ people BOOOOO if they make an error..
Was last night a “MUST WIN GAME” ?? NO… It would have been awesome if they won, but they didn’t and we got lucky that the Muts lost too…
If you want to BOO, to a haunted house or hayride or something, cause they need a homefield advantage down there for these next three games.. not a bunch of half-fans… somebody made a great call “fans boo obnoxiously when they lose, and act like super-fan when they win” … it doesn’t get any more true than that
September 25th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Ben… sell them on StubHUb.. and make a small fortune.. you can make enough money to buy yourself an big screen HDTV to watch the game on, if you don’t have one already.. Last year my buddy got 3 nosebleed seats in 3b-LF area, sold them for like $200 each
September 25th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Ladies and Gentlemen! Don M!!! Surprisingly no relation to Amaro, Giles, or Gillick….
September 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Damn 200 bucks, that does sound tempting, but yeah I can’t do that I’m too much of a fan not to go to the game. I wanna be there when they win. I don’t care if I could be a curse.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Nicely said Don
September 25th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Boy I thought our starting pitching problems were over(at least as far as the top 2)
….but the last 2 starts by Myers have me wondering..Whats really wrong with this guy?..Wild Thing says he’s opening up too soon and letting the hitter see the ball too good..
But I have to thing its between the ears..Man what a dissapointment.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Well we care Ben, sit your ass home.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I think we can al agree Myers is never going to sustain his potential, with 1 year left on his deal and no-one really on the market worth throwing more money than someone else will offer with Myers around we can wait to see what’s going to be on the market next year or via trade.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I think we got extremely lucky that Myers responded the way he did coming back from the minors.. boosted his value a TON.. and helped get this team where we are right now.. but seriously with Myers, Burrell.. we’ve counted on these guys to be All-Star, MVP, 20-game winner, Cy Young types.. and I just dont see that ever happening in a Phillies uniform.
Hamels needs to have the ball in any big game, whether it be this Sunday, or after that…. Moyer should get the #2… Myers, Blanton, Happ somehow make up the rest of the rotation.
That MYERS OPENING UP TOO SOON is the problem he had before he was sent down.. last night, he had 12 baserunners, and recorded 13 outs… that is horrible.. 10 hits from the Braves doesn’t usually happen in 14 innings, let alone 4.1
September 25th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Nobody thinks Myers is a CY-Young candidate. But he has the capability to keep this team in games and his last two starts he hasn’t. We are not asking him to be the ace, just not let up 10 runs a game.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Doesn’t everyone think that the ACE of your staff for the past 3 seasons should be in contention for a CY YOUNG ..?? Everyone on here at some point in the past thought Myers had 20-win potential, with a 3.5-4.0 ERA.. and he always had a lot of K’s … which would get him Cy Young votes.. point is, he’ll never be as good as we want him to be while he’s with this team.. Lets see if he can turn it around again before they start making tee-times at some point in the future
September 25th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Don keep the comments coming your on the money.
Sounds like the off-sesaon plan is to find a stop-gap to Golson like the Braves tried with Kotsay for Anderson.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Thats my problem with the Phillies. You can’t let last nights game become a blowout, especially after losing the way they did the night before. Extremely disappointed in Myers. Doing all the wrong things at a time when you need to be figuring out how to do all the right things. By the way Howards attempt to turn 2 in the 5th was just atrocious. What was he thinking? Just take the out.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:41 am
NJ how do you find time to type while swinging from Don M’s b-….nevernmind! I guess you gottta agree with the only person here who agress with you….
September 25th, 2008 at 10:44 am
alright.. dennis is so wise, but has yet to say anything meaningful, so what exactly im a wrong about, or missing the point on.. you want to BOO.. great, have fun..
But realize that it really does make players not want to stay here, or come here as a free agent.. “If they can’t handle it too bad…” …. yea, too bad for us that we miss out on free agents in every sport except Hockey
September 25th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Well discussing the booing problem on Phillies Nation is not going to change anything. So it’s really sort of pointless.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:51 am
And our prospects come up with the attitude they have to star otherwise their trash, no wonder guys like Gavin Floyd end up on the scrap-heap when so many wanted him to fail as a reason for the teams ‘failure’.
Many Phils fans don’t want to support they just want to boo at every opportunity and cheer for the guys who swing for the fences instead of putting the ball in play or fan instead of keeping runners off.
September 25th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Here’s a q… Would a guy like Lowrie suceed in Philly? The reining WS champion Sox and Red Sox nations are giving the guy every opportunity to become a part of their future, would Phils Nation…? Think we know the answer there
September 25th, 2008 at 10:59 am
NJ, I don’t think there are that many Phils fans who just enjoy booing the team, but when you go to a game at this point in the season with the playoffs on the line, you don’t expect to see what we did last nite. Myers is supposed to be our #2, for Christ’s sake. Your #2 pitcher CAN’T be losing it like that in such an important game. And you CAN’T have mental errors when games mean this much. I don’t expect perfection, but pretty damned close to it down the stretch like this.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:01 am
We lose free agents cause of Boo-ing? I’m pretty sure we don’t get any big names in free agency cause our 134 owners are cheap as can be.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:03 am
They make all kinds of excuses, but you’re right Dennis, in the long run they’re just too cheap.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:04 am
they miss out on free agents because they dont want to pay them..do you honestly believe that crap that they wont come here because of the fans? pat burrell loves it here and he should hate us…players play for money unless theyve made so much already that they dont care but by then theyre like 35. when are you going to understand that everyone boos in every city. even the toolbags in st louis boo the blues because they suck. it has NOTHING to do with the free agency decisions of the vast majority of players. the fact that jimmy rollins said that makes him a piece of shit. thats GARBAGE pushed on you by the ownership to get you to accept the fact that they are NOT going to sign CC sabathia. PERIOD.
they can afford to have a 150mm payroll next season..that means pay raises for arb players, an extension or two to the worthy, and two free agents (top line pitcher, top line bat). its COMPLETE bullshit to accept anything less than that. but i already know theyre not going to do that. money should be no issue with this team now after this season. this is it, this is their time to spend. how much longer are you going to wait to spend money? for what? ANOTHER new stadium?
you get the point yet? do you understand? they HAVE the money to spend, this year theres plenty of top talent in free agency to spend it on..now go do it…no excuses anymore. 50 sellouts means BIG payroll increase….except here when they sucker you and steal your money and dont invest it back into the team.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:05 am
youre probably one of those people that thinks the bailout is a good idea…
September 25th, 2008 at 11:05 am
I know it’s a little different with the Cubs having pretty much wrapped the division up then but did their fans boo Zambrano like the world was coming to an end the game after his no hitter when he got mauled?
Booing Myers uncontrollably isn’t going to change what comes next for him, he knows he screwed up and the bullpen guys probably know what went wrong for them but many fans in the stands seemed to act like the teams done and out of contention.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Geoff- werd.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:08 am
or the most recent example.. Mike Lowell.. who would have helped this team greatly from the RH side of the plate, addings lots of power… we offered him more than the RedSox and he decided to stay there instead because its baseball paradise..
Everyone’s favorite last year, jimmy rollins has said multiple times that he’s heard players said they would never play here
September 25th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Sorry, NJ, but when my team plays like that in a game of that magnitude, I’m starting to question things, ok?
September 25th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Spending money for the sake of it isn’t going to win championships, ask uncle George over in NYC (sorry Tampa)
They do need to lock-up Cole and address the Howard situation but they have to stop making reaches Garica, Eaton, Jenkins, Bell, Helms, Rhodes expecting throwing money to make these guys all-stars or contribute above their skillset. We have no relief depth, infield and corner outfield depth because of narrowmindedness to satisfy trying to find the all-star starter or CFer. Some here want to throw money at Sheets instead of the idea of drafting an developing someone with his ability or to find a SU guy on the market instead of wondering why the situation can’t be addressed internally. We start playing the game again throwing money around needlessly and we become the Mets so crippled and brittle by putting those extra years on for short-term success.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:17 am
when are you going to learn?
they didnt offer him anything….they probably never even called him…its called lying and its not exclusive to politicians. besides, lowell was comfortable in boston…why would he leave? it doesnt mean he didnt come here because of the evil philly fans.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Georgie 1 game maybe you could say two but what about winning 10 of 11 before that to get into a position they had control when they looked dead in the water? It’s like win every game or nothing sometimes here and some disagree with that statement yet put on their boo bird suit at the first sign of a single loss.
We lost so many games in the middle of the year because it was all about that ‘1 game’ night after night and not sustaining form that would translate into a winning record.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Geoff it wasn’t spin coming out of the Philly camp that they offered a deal to Lowell, they were embaressed he didn’t take the deal after reportingly saying he wanted to play in Philly months before.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Friday I’m going to the game…and I’ll BOO at bad umpire calls and if I don’t see our players hustling and giving their best effort.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Geoff, i forgot that you visit the clubhouse all the time, and sit-in on meetings where they do or don’t offer players money in Free Agency.. so you know firsthand that the Phillies didn’t actually offer Lowell money eventhough, them, Lowell himself, and the RedSox all said there was an offer for more money on the table.. but I’ll take your werd for it .
you guys are bashing a team for what the haven’t done yet in the upcoming offseason.. they’ve openly stated that they’re looking to add more pieces, something they haven’t publicly admitted before..
and look at the Muts.. having a big payroll doesn’t mean jackshit.. the NY teams spend more than almost every team in baseball and there is a chance that neither of them make it past this weekend
September 25th, 2008 at 11:24 am
there is NOONE internally to get called up next year who we know can setup well. that means free agency…
WHEN burrell leaves we will need a corner outfielder…we cannot rely on golson alone and assume hell be able to START when he cant get on base barely. golson and stairs are your bench outfielders next year…
jenkins and taguchi are gone…
so you need a STARTING corner outfielder. you probably also need to upgrade the infield bench (seya bruntlett…). many other teams bring up these position prosects and let them take PT away from the veteran, tahts usually how it works unless its obvious (braun). thats how it should work here. instead the phillies let them rot down in hte minors until they are 26. thats bad management of personnel.
so…SP, SU Man, Corner OF, IF Bench Player, Extra Bullpen Depth Arms and…getting rid of j-roll.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:27 am
I boo when players don’t hustle.. or boo Manuel leaving Rheal Cormier in with the bases loaded, two outs in the bottom 7th before, with the Phillies up by 3 in a game… I booed louder than I ever have before that game.. in like 2005…
But Myers is one of the top reasons that the Phillies still have a chance at the playoffs, and 10 days ago people were saying that he’s better than Hamels, he’s definitely the ACE of the staff, etc… now you’re all saying its OK to Boo him, cause that won’t mess with his head more at all..
September 25th, 2008 at 11:28 am
right but now if you want to even keep your own players long term EXCLUDING burrell youre going to push the payroll to 120-130 mm…im not even sure theyll do that.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I guess what ticks me off the most is that they shouldn’t even BE in this position, they did lose all those games earlier, and now they have to fight and claw their way in. Let’s face it, this team is VERY inconsistent, especially hitting and fielding. Sometimes they look like they’re busting their asses, other times they look like they’re not even there.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Bruntlett has been pretty valuable to this team… and now is the part of the day when you start your random complaining.. and telling us that Moyer should retire and the trainers should be fired..
Let me know when you’re done with that upcoming rant, and i’ll pay attention to what you post again
The 2008 Phillies might be the only team in history with 90 wins, but their own fans think that they SUCK… (unless of course they win, and then they’re the greatest thing since sliced-bread again)
September 25th, 2008 at 11:33 am
If this team wins anything less than 130 games, you guys would still find faults in their game..
If you were told before the season that the Phillies would win 90 games, you’d take it, but now that we’re close, its not good enough..
September 25th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Geoff don’t I remember you critisizing the lack of prospects a while back and now your calling for type A free agents and bring in more type B guys for the bench when Bruntlett does the job fine.
We can’t address the bullpen issue internally because we draft and groom starters without creating any hard throwing potential relivers and have a yearly signingfest of free agent relivers or trading for guys like Rhodes to cover up holes hoping they’ll get lucky with a Santana, Hernandez, Sanches. During the year the answer is to fill with guys like Rick White. You talk about spending money, how did the Cubs get Sarmadzja or the Yanks Chamerberlin… Money and that’s where it needs to go!
September 25th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Anyway…I’m in DC right now and I can tell that rain is coming… it’s going up north, hitting Philly and New York later today… Can’t they move the NY game a couple of hours earlier?
Friday and Saturday also look like a mess for the Phillies and the Mets… what are they gonna do?
September 25th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Seriously, where are you folks hammering hamels and lauding myers just one week ago? Come out of the woodworks and step up. You really want myers in game 1 if we make the playoffs, really?!?
September 25th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Kyle, “I never said that” …. is what everyone on here will say … no accountability from anyone on here, but I guess that is what happens with posting things over the internet… I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE DUDE, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN (No, no you don’t..)
September 25th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I ALWAYS criticize the lack of prospects. I mean, there are like 3/4 guys who might be ML ready sometime in a year or so. Happ I consider already on the team next year. If myers cant hack it in the playoffs I wouldnt mind moving him along teither because who wants a guy that inconsistent?
i think they should bring in AT LEAST ONE free agent starter but id rather see them bring in two if myers isnt going to be reliable. and yesm if it comes down to signing cc sabathia for 20mm or jamie moyer for 10mm then id be all about sabathia. or whoever. id even pay derek lowe 15-18mm for 3 years just because you know what youre going to get from him time in and time out. AND id take him OVER jamie moyer. jamie moyer had a GREAT year, GREAT. but enough is enough. let him ride off into the sunset coming off one of his best seasons in ages.
WHAT BETTER WAY TO DO THAT THEN TO MAKE A GOOD PLAYOFF RUN, HUH?
September 25th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Happ’s by no means on this team already and nor is Kendrick, both have their work cut out for them in the off-season and in ST. You can’t call for a FA starter yet you admit you critisize the lack of prospects which is as a result of signing FA’s… It doesn’t make sense.
Signing Sabathia for $20m… Do you pay no attention to what is going on in baseball? the Yanks can offer $30 and it’s far from a guarantee he’ll take it as he’s stated his preference to play in California and to play on a team where he can enjoy his baseball, there is a 0% chance of him landing in Philly.
We have to go back to the draft and look at some accelerated players to fill holes that are going to become great issue again if they are not addressed. You continue to trend of reaching for players or overpaying and you land yourself in an even bigger hole.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
victorino for the jeltz again?? i don’t understand that at all. he didn’t have his best game but he did have a nice hit, a stolen base, and played very well defensively as always.
even if he went 0 for 5, i still wouldn’t give it to him just for the fact that he didn’t back down from that nut job tavarez. seeing the team rush the field like that, burrell taking command of the situation, victorino standing up for himself, that was by far the most positive thing to take away from the game. it shows this team still has life and just lost a rough series.
i expected them to drop 2 to the marlins and win 2 against the braves. well it was reversed, but this is still where i thought they’d be coming into this final series. time to play each of these 3 games like they’re the last, because they very well could be. take it to the nats, and take it to them hard! take that division two years straight!
September 25th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
i hate to break it to you, but the lack of prospects does not come from signing FA’s, though you do soemtimes have to give up a pick. the lack of propsects is beacuse they are wholly incompetent, or have been for the past decade. sure you get a few hits, but how many busts? how many?
of course, if you dont want to sign FA’s and you dont have prospects to trade, then you could of course rebuild….that would get you some prospects. free agents should at least keep you at or better than where you are now in the NL.
I know sabathia wont come…then yoru backup is burnett or lowe. i cant trust brett myers, im sorry. he had me there and then he tanks again. i cant trust jamie moyer again as great as he has been, sorry.
i KNOW kendrick wont be in this rotation next year, you might as well just trade him off…seriously what good is he if he doesnt improve?
you want to rebuild? ok fine, say goodbye to brett myers jimmy rollins, ryan howard AT THE LEAST.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
but heres the thing…WHY REBUILD NOW? they have the money to spend to get over the top, so spend it…do it, get the players. they have ryan howard, they have chse utley, they have hamels and a decent core. you need a few final pieces to the puzzle. you will NOT get them from your farm system.
dont you know how free agency works?
you draft and trade to get the core of yoor team, you sign free agents to plug the holes in the foundation.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
WHY REBUILD NOW….. WHY TRADE JIMMY ROLLINS FOR PROSPECTS IF YOUR TRYING TO WIN SOON???????????????
September 25th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I’m not talking about re-building and the lack of prospects do come from signing FA’s and it well voiced that that’s what has crippled the Yanks. There are prospects early in the draft that are accelerated in their development and can be major league ready within 2 years but you start playing the FA market or not investing in prospects as we have done and you land yourself in a hole. For example if we loose Durbin, Eyre, Seanez, Gordon all without contracts for next year we’ll all call for ‘quality’ replacements and that means signing type B FA’s so bye bye more opportunites to draft accelerated prospects
I’m a fan of Derek Lowe but not as anything more than a type B FA but Burnett… Please the guys going to rake in money far exceeding his value.
Pure and simple we have to spend more in the early rounds of the draft and international recruitment otherwise were going to keep having these conversations over guys like Eaton and Jenkins or Garcia who shouldn’t have been here in the first place.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Don Geoff seems to be trying to make the point that signing reaches in FA doesn’t cripple your farm, and if we were to not throw the chequebook around town in the off-season and instead put the money into the draft and players already well developed in the early round then that would be ‘re-building’ which would mean we might as well trade Rollins, Howard.
Can we make Geoff our next GM so at least there’s a reason we’d end up failing with a sky high payroll and a barron farm…
September 25th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
yes they do have to do that, spend more in the early ruonds for higher graded people…not this hweitt project 5 year trash. that gets you nowhere. seriously, why should i rely on that guy?
if lowes a type b what harm is there in taht really? he will stabilize a portion of your rotation until your young pitching, wherever it is, is ready.
but rebuild…to what end? you go through cycles, the great teams know how to keep the stock filled and replinished each year. otehr than that…NOW is the time for the phillies to get it done, spend what you need to win and lock up the guys you need.
the yankees made bad decisions because their owner was an insane physchopath. they overpaid for the WRONG people. you have to overpay in FA anyway, but you have to get the right man.
the bottom line is if you want a farm sytem again, then you have to completely rebuild and suck for a while AGAIN. ENOUGH OF THAT! spend the money, lock up howard and hamels…suck it up.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
you want to buy out hamels arb years and some of his fa years…
September 25th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
because i hate jimmy rollins. we could send the phanatic out there to play shortstop..if the pitchings good enough it wont matter.
i wonder if the phanatic is still a huge drug dealer?
September 25th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
so are you trying to have the phillies win, just trying to trade Rollins cause you don’t like him, trying too hard to be funny, or some combination of the 3 ?
September 25th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
rollins is obviously not going anywhere, ok? i just cANT STAND HIM so im going to talk trash about him all the time and call for his trade at every opportunity.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
WE GET IT…. just be normal for a while though, try to let it go.. you don’t even know the dude so you can’t hate him that much… LET IT GO
September 25th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Lock up Howard… not going to happen. Best FA’s on the market are Sabathia (not coming here) and Teixeria (not coming here) so who on the market would you overpay for? A Sheets that everyones questioning, Burnett who’s an injury prone run giver or maybe Milton Bradley who’s a headcase on crutches…
Sure you have to overpay but you do it for the right guys and most of those don’t make it to FA which is why you have put the money into the draft. Do you know why so many of these prospects are coming up aged 24/25? Their being drafted at 21/22 not 18 and in a short time are filling out and contributing to major league rosters and we’ve taken 1… Just 1 at a time everyones scrambling for them.
So Geoff who are the right people? Who do we’ve sign and trade for now in this masterplan of your and still have a farm.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
lowes the guy you get….im not for sheets..
ok but im just letting you know..im OK with drafting those guys and having them ready soon and overpaying for them…but still thats two years to three years off assuming you implement this with the new GM…what are you going to do until then? there arent many guys close to being ready. if you dont want to sign FA’s to fill the gaps you are going to SUCK for 3 years until your kids are ready…ASSUMING THEY PAN OUT!!!!
im saying…do that, AND go into free agncy…get someone to play RF, get some starters in here, a setup man, and youll be fine until youre ready to go younger again….
you act like they cant afford to do both. theyve got an assload of money right now..use it. with Americans its always one extreme or the other…
why cant you rebuild your farm system WHILE keeping your top squad competitive through trades and FA? whats so damn wrong with that? seriously?
September 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
why do that when you have a core in place to supplement with established players while you wait for your farm to rebuild?
it is INEXCUSEABLE to rebuild again if you are the LOSINGEST FRANCHISE IN MLB HISTORY and you are FINALLY good enough again to draw fan support. thats what LOSERS AND LOSING FAILING FRANCHISES DO!!!!!
September 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Because this isn’t neverneverland geoff, the economics of the game don’t work that way… You may find more satisfaction being a harlem globetrotters fan you know.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Nothing is wrong with it… its just a lot easier said than done.. thats the problem. If all GMs made trades and aquisitions like we do in fantasy baseball, and could “create players” like we all do in video games, we’d have 5 Championships in the past year… but in REALITY… they try to do what they can with what they’ve got..
they took chances on guys like David Bell and Tom Gordon… more recently on Feliz and Lidge.. so they are going in the right direction
September 25th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Nobody on this team has anything to do with 8,500 of the 10,000+ losses…. most of them happened before our great-grandparents were born
September 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
It’s not re-building, did the Cubs re-build when they drafted Samarjdza or the Yanks when they paid for Chamberlin instead of scurrying around FA hoping for a guy like Durbin who’s a FA all over again?
IT’S NOT RE-BUILDING! Anyway so if you were GM and after all the we need this and that your shopping list is Derek Lowe, thats hardly the fills the vacancies you’ve spouted on about. It sounds like to want the best of all world without compromise.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
but they can spend as much money as the red sox and they lie to you and say they dont have any money and you believe them and wonder why they dont sign cc sabathia because I ALREADY KNOW THEY WONT DO THAT
September 25th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
its restocking…i know….
MY POINT IS THERE ARE GOING TO BE GAPS BETWEEN NOW AND WHEN YOUR PROSPECTS ARE READY. your next generation…what are you going to do until then? suck?
September 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
GEOFF THEY CAN’T SIGN SABATHIA! THEY HAVE AS MUCH CHANCE AT HIM AS THEY DO CY YOUNG!? no amount of money short of something eclipsing A-Rod money would do it!!!
September 25th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
ok fine..then you go down the line, thats what you do….gap in your rotation?
sabathia? cant afford, wont come here, excuse C, etc? ok
sheets? injured too much big mistake
burnett? can dominate, not worth what he thinks he is, going to stay in toronto anyway
lowe? bingo, perfect…so what if he costs 18mm
garland? overrated, overpriced
perez? if hes affordable why not risk it?
thats the best of the free agent pitching i think…you try to fill the hole with the best guy out there that you can get…you dotn just accept that you wont get him and then SUCK because you didnt fill a hole.
also, who says that you cant sign him? why not? seriously? what kind of bottom feeding loser attitutde is that?
they sold out like 50 games this year, they can afford to splurge on someone. they SHOULD get him…but we know they wont even try and then lie to us again and act like they were right in there…
September 25th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
they dont do any of that, dont fill the gap with a stable pitcher at least then youre going NOWHERE…you think jamie moyer can repeat this performance? i GUARANTEE he wont be THIS good next year. you think brett myers can be consistent? joe blanton?
there are too many question marks for my liking there…way too many. they got lucky with their rotation this year…
September 25th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Is Perez any better than Blanton, who we got for free, but who everyone hates??
Geoff, you are without a doubt, the most annoying “Phillies fan” of all time….. you’ve called this team DONE, and tried to trade everyone for prospects all season long, then shouted about DEMANDING A CHAMPIONSHIP NOW.. then you tell us we can’t sign CC Sabathia, then someone agrees with you.. and you call them out for having a “BOTTOM FEEDING LOSER ATTITUDE”
…you have issues…
September 25th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
nobody takes any of your roster “suggestions” seriously, because you have 12 new ideas every day.. you’ve wanted Rollins, Howard, Victorino, Myers, and Madson all traded already this year..
now you’re telling us you’d be fine with spending $18 Million on Lowe, and going after Perez ….
you. are. a. clown. PERIOD.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Jamie Moyer will probably not repeat his performance next year… BUT.. he was better this year than he was last year, so maybe there is no gaurantee that he won’t stay “hot” for another year or two..
if you had your way and we traded everyone or released them, just because they’ve already had their “best” season.. we’d be without Rollins, Howard, Moyer, Coste, Burrell, etc… all those guys that makeup the team..
just because a guy probably won’t duplicate his CAREER year, doesn’t mean its time for him to go
September 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Don lets not rain on Geoff’s parade we will sign Sabathia and my tip for Geoff Cy Young, think the old A-Rod to Philly deal back before Abreu was traded is back on too…
September 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Same dudes that were PISSED we didn’t “get anything in return” for Abreu, and failed to see the logic in letting him go instead of paying him $15 Million, and then a $16 Million option after that… what you got in return for that deal was your money freed-up so you can sign players like Utley and Lidge to extensions
September 25th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
you know what? when they win a championship, then someof this stuff can be justified…but they have failed to produce anything. this ownership group took over and they destroyed the team until 1993 then destroyed them again until recently. what kind of a piss poor record is that?
they hire people like gillick and wade who will do what theyre told to do and keep their mouths shut. you guys are the exceptions. the sucker fans. youre not involved in this, do you understand?
a real general manager has all phases of the team development and personnel system working in conjunction with each other and in unison. they put the pieces on teh field and they have their roster projected years in advance. but the phillies dont do business that way..maybe they will sometime soon liek when they hire a new GM not named amaro or arbuckle. maybe if a real owner buys the team.
until then you know what you get? you get adam eaton, rod barajas, rudy seanez, david bell, wes helms, geoff jenkins, etc etc etc etc. THATS WHAT YOU GET, DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
DO YOU UNDERSTAND? winning is about having a well laid plan that is researched, well-prepared, and sound. if you have to adjust on the fly you do it based on trying to achieve your goal in the shortest amount of time.
but if your goal is not to win soon or at all, then youre not going to make decisions conducive to that are you? these owners are not trying to win, they want to be competetive enough to suck money out of you.
if they happen to stumble upon a championship along the way, like fall into one (cardinals in 06, total bullshit luck), HEY, great!!! ill take it…but dont think itll become a trend with these clowns.
September 25th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
DO YOU UNDERSTAND??… that you contradict yourself more and more with each post… if we haven’t been planning for the future, then how did we improve each of the past 3 seasons with homegrown talent at the helm… and how are Jason Donald and Lou Marson going to be the All-Stars that you project them to be ??
DO YOU UNDERSTAND? No GM is stupid enough to DEMAND shit from their owners and complain about them to the public.. cause then they’ll lose their job and no other owners would ever hire them.. its not that hard a concept to grasp.. I’d rather not have Amaro be named the next GM, but I wouldn’t have any problem at all with Arbuckle, who is raved about by the rest of baseball year in and year out..
September 26th, 2008 at 11:10 am
lets see if you can understand this…brett myers to the tigers for whatever they got in the cabinet. sign derek lowe, sign oliver perez, trade j-hole for mark buehrle..sign casey blake to play a corner outfield spot…sign juan cruz to add another arm to the mix…keep howard utley werth victorino goldon marson donald ruiz lidge durbin romero eyre madson hamels blanton happ. they can afford all that…but they dont want to win so they wont to half of that.
really…MIKE ARBUCKLE? what the F has he done to show any value at all..hes one of the main problems and reasons why we dont have a good farm system. bad farm system = bad farm director. hes the FIRST guy thats gotta go EVEN BEFORE AMARO..owners that want to win dont care if they GM is vocal…
February 18th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Hey there! Excellent thought, but will this actually operate?
