CHAMPS AGAIN! PHILS WIN EAST
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, September 27, 2008 06:40 PM

Brad Lidge was about to blow his first save of the season … but the 2007 MVP bailed him out with an incredible diving stop, starting the double play that won the National League East for the Phillies. The 2008 champs won, 4-3, over the Nationals.
Jamie Moyer picked up the win, his 16th, with a fantastic six-inning performance. He allowed one run on six hits and a walk, striking out a batter in his final pitch. The 45-year-old set it up, gave the Phils the chance to win, and pitched one of the better games of his Phillie career.
The Phils ran out to the lead with two sacrifice flies in the fourth inning. Pat Burrell knocked one in first, then Carlos Ruiz hit one. The Phils went up 3-1 on a just-enough home run by Jayson Werth.
With a 3-1 lead, Ryan Madson got into trouble in the eighth. But with the help of a spectacular play by Jimmy Rollins — who made a bunch of awesome plays in this game — the damage was only one run. For the most part, the bullpen held it together.
Luckily for the Phils, the big hit was a Pedro Feliz gapper to score Shane Victorino in the bottom of the eighth. With a two-run lead, “insurance run” never meant more. Brad Lidge gave up a run and loaded the bases in the ninth. There was one out …
Never in doubt.

September 27th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
That sounds good to me Tim.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
It wouldn’t be philly if we weren’t biting our nails! Would lidge blow his first save all year TODAY? What a ride and now its time for the playoffs!
September 27th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Myers just promised to not go three and out this time.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Holy crap I have no fingernails left!!! Go phils!!!
September 27th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Harry’s call on the radio was classic! Unreal!!!
September 27th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I read somewhere Moyer’s become only the 2nd pitcher in the history of the game to win 16 games twice after turning 40… Might be a slight variaton on that figure
September 27th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Brian – I was listening too, I think LA just going nuts was the best part. Great call by both of them.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
I just got back from the game. best game I’ve ever been to in my life.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
I’m not afraid of any of the nl playoff teams. We have a winning record against the cubs, swept the brewers in a 4 game series, and even though we got swept in 4 games by the dodgers, we came back and pulled the huge sweep on them. Oh and the mets? f_ck the mets! My dad and I both predicted a phillies cubs nlcs befor the season began, now it’s gonna happen
September 27th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
YES! I was down there today. What a great time. Place packed towels waiving. Jamie Moyer was outstanding today. Everyone contributed in the lineup getting a key hit here and there. J-Hole was great in the field. Two unbelievable plays. Shane Victorino also is just great in Center Field, he gets to everything out there. Ryan Madson managed to get out of trouble. And Brad Lidge had another Mitch Williams save. I cant believe he has gone perfect all season, thats amazing, as was the last inning.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Moyer has become the only pitcher other than Phil Niekro in MLB History to win 16 games at age 45/46. i think the record books consider that he started the season at age 45 and it counts that way. 16 wins for Moyer! Amazing.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Madson just said the crowd was the loudest he ever heard, that they helped him when he was out there, and he didn’t hear any boos!
September 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Yay Phillies!!!
Now what’s the 25-man roster for the playoffs?
Howard, Utley, Rollins, Feliz, Burrell, Victorino, Werth, Ruiz
Dobbs, Brunlett, Coste, ? ?
Hamels, Moyer, Myers, Blanton
Lidge, Madson, Romero, Durbin, Eyre, Condrey, Seanez, ?
3 other spots: Stairs? Jenkins? Taguchi? Happ? (seeing as Kendrick and Eaton have been ruled out already, but I thought he wasn’t available for postseason)
September 27th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Stairs, Jenkins and Happ
September 27th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
i’ve been watching the post game stuff the entire time. this is so great.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Yep, Stairs, jenkins Happ.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
How can stairs play in the post season? Wasn’t he picked up after the trade deadline?
September 27th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
So Happy… Go Phils!!!
September 27th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Great day for the Phils.
As for the roster: Stairs can play in the postseason, he was acquired August 30th. I think only Tad Iguchi is ineligible at this point.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
From a Mets fan….Congrats to the Phils, they earned it and deserved it.
See you in the post season (hopefully!)
September 27th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Stairs was picked up before. Iguchi isn’t and don’t believe the AAA additions are as they were called-up a couple of days into Sept although Golson and Marson should be eligable as they came up the night before the deadline.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
I am here thinking the mets lost 8 games that santana left with the lead. How many games do they win if they had a closer like lidge. So lets enjoy this win and hope that the enthusiam. that the fans show, will get ownership not to let us down in the offseason.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
yay phillies!! they are ready for it this year all the way in 08!
September 27th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
BELTRAN WAS WRONG!!!!!! THE PHILLIES R THE BEST TEAM AGAIN AHAHHAHAHAHHHAHAHH
September 27th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
In fairness the Mets personnel problems are of their own doing… Luck wasn’t on their side but they bitched and whined over a situation they created particularly in the bullpen.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Id like to know the percentage of wins that the Phils have had over the last 15 games..in both 07 and 08..It must be incredible..
We won the division in both years because we earned it,by winning games.and lots of them.
Congrats to the team..they took us on an up and down ride..but in the end..just plain JOY..
September 27th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Just got home and it was without a doubt the most amazing moment in sports I have EVER seen! I am so happy it’s not even funny!
September 27th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Nicely said Richie. On Mikes point on the flip side how many games did the Phils loose to a dormant offense in well pitched games, it evened out.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
once again, amazing day for phillies fans, great great season.
if anyone was trying to join my fantasy hockey keeper league before and couldn’t, i think i figured out the problem with the link i was posting. the link i have listed for my name here should direct you to a page to join if you’re logged into yahoo now. draft is tomorrow at 3PM, although i might push it back if the league doesn’t fill up a bit more.
tim let’s get the jeltz down already!
September 27th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
WOW!!! It’s sinking in, even from where I am — in Israel. Any idea who we play in the first round — L.A. or Cubbies?? Frankly, I wanna see our guys make Manny Ramirez look foolish again, like in the sweep!
September 27th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
We can’t change the graphics until Brian comes back . Sorry fans.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
They talked about it today on baseball show with tim k. In september its something like twenty five out of thirty three in september stretch. They talked how much under pressure in sept. they came through.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
am drafting from the UK so earlier the better with the time difference
Once again congrats to the Phils and in particular Jimmy who put his chat behind him and showed tonight how this team ‘rolls’…
September 27th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Mark depends on tomorrow (or monday) and the WC winner. If the Brewers win the WC then they come here but if the Mets win then the Dodgers come here.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
I think I had a heart attack. They did it the Philly way. They did it, thats all that counts! GO PHILLIES! World Series! =]
September 27th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
NJ Says I know its the mets problem. But I Hope we don’t become satisfy with division title. I want a world series, and I still think we don;t match up well against milaukee with there starters and chicago.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Anybody know where I can here Harry’s call? My AM radio wasn’t working I had to listen to McCarver, who was making me so mad.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Those in the clubhouse aren’t satisfied with just the division and the post-game made it clear, whether it works out our way is a different story.
Milwaukee are two starters now in CC and Gallardo with the sweep not long behind and the Dodgers have that sweep fresh in the memory, with the Cubbies unless we get put down early we have more than a fighting shot.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Mccarver is an ass I swear to god he wastrying to jinx Lidge He must have said how he was perfect in saves like 35 times you just dont do that retired met trying to screw us!!! Go PHILS!!!
September 27th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
I think the far more subdued celebration was an indication that they know there is still a long way to go….
September 27th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
I dont know why Mccarver was doing the jinx routine vs lidge..dont forget he played for the Phils too.
But Im glad I dont have to listen to him very often ..He sucks
September 27th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
All I know is that this is the greatest …I wont say any more other than…..Cant wait till the 1st game of the playoffs on wednesday…Im excited beyond beleif.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Does anybody know if MLB is going to do another one of those forced pep rallies for all of the playoff teams again this year?
September 27th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I was at the game, 12 rows behind home plate. It was absolutely amazing. It was a nail biter to the very end, but they did it. I wish I was home to see some of the clubhouse celebrations, but regardless it was amazing. Bring on any NL team, we can take them. Go Phils!
September 27th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Someone asked about where would the Mets be if they had Lidge. A couple of days ago on DNL someone from NY gave these stats, don’t know where or how they arrived at them:
If Lidge were the mets closer they would be 12.5 games in 1st place
If games were only 6 innings they would be 11.5 games in 1st.
If games were only 8 innings they would be 6.5 games ahead.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
another thing that was so great about today: what a team effort. seriously every single player that was in the game, minus maybe bruntlett, contributed in some significant way. also how great was it listening to all the post game interviews? i especially liked jimmy & dobbs, moyer, and lidge.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Tim, if you know the post seasons schedule could you post it? The Phils will be hosting the first round of the NLDS – I know the games start on Wednesday, likely Hamels pitching. I need to arrange with my boss when I am taking off as soon as possible!
Thanks

[...] are your 2008 NL East Champs: via the 700 Level. Via The Fightins. Via Phillies Nation. Via Balls, Sticks & Stuff. Via Crashburn Alley. Via The Good Phight. Via We Should Be [...]
September 27th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
when i take a step back and look…theres no way you can let jamie moyer leave. ill concede that…i have so much respect for him that he can leave when he wants to. hes that type of guy…everyone in this city admires him and he means so much to this franchise and these young players. theres so much more he has to teach them. he has to come back. theres nothing bad you can say about a 46 year old man who has a 16 win season
September 27th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Geoff, Jamie Moyer has proven himself to be a fantastic big game pitcher. Despite that loss in the post season last year, his performance in Game 3 of the NLDS was stunning.
His game clincher last year was amazing.
His game against the Mets for that double header was brilliant.
And today, 2 years in a row, he delivered us the game clinching performance.
Jamie Moyer is an inspiring pitcher who just flat out gets it.
September 27th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
here is a link to Harry’s call
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/attytood/J-Roll_Utley_and_Howard_will_walk_together_through_history.html
“..the pitch to Zimmerman… ground ball up the middle. JRoll dives, he flips to Utley, ONE, the RELAY TO FIRST, DOUBLE PLAY! THE PHILLIES ARE THE NATIONAL LEAGUE EASTERN DIVISION CHAMPIONS ON A SPECTACULAR DOUBLE PLAY! JROLL TO UTLEY TO HOWARD! WHAT A PLAY BY JROLL!”
September 27th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
I just want to simply add my heartfelt congratulations to the Phillies. It’s feels good to say the team are the NL EAST CHAMPS AGAIN!! I’m certainly looking forward to the playoffs Wednesday vs Brewers or Dodgers.
September 27th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
Got back from the game a little while ago. We stayed until 8:15ish. I got my NL East champion shirt and wore it around NY a bit tonight and got 3 “congrats” from random people. Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.
Go Phils!
September 28th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Excellent night – NL East Champs 2008! Congrats Fightin Phils! Awesome.
For tomorrow: rest all regulars and more important: GO BREWERS, GO MARLINS!!!
Where’s RivLez, and all the other Mutt trolls now?????
September 28th, 2008 at 12:59 am
What a great game! So good to see this team playing well and winning games they are capable of. I can’t wait to see them put together a spectacular playoff run.
September 28th, 2008 at 1:17 am
Second year in a row I had the privilege of being there in person for the division winning game. That last inning was brutal to witness and worth every penny.
Pics up here if you care: http://flickr.com/photos/30887162@N02/sets/72157607549166771/
September 28th, 2008 at 1:29 am
Chase Mutley, too many of us had the game blacked out today. Not that listening to the radio feed over the internet was that bad, but being able to see those images is fantastic. Thanks.
September 28th, 2008 at 4:35 am
BTW, Kendrick to start tomorrow.
September 28th, 2008 at 5:54 am
Just fantastic – it is thundering now – perhaps this game would be cancelled today? No big deal…
How about Brad Lidge for CY this year?
September 28th, 2008 at 8:00 am
So where are all those cry babies who said that they couldnt do it, that they should have traded Jimmy cause he basically said philly fans can be pricks (who knew), who cry and whined about the GM and said that the only good thing Ryan Howard was good for was a wind machine with his strike outs.
there partying out on cottman and frankford telling us that they knew it all along
go phillies
September 28th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Burrell said it nicely and Jimmy said the right things, after having those premadonner moments he’s manned up, kept quiet and let his game do the talking. The team said the right things last night and whichever way it goes from here it won’t be for lack of focus.
Any thoughts on why Kendrick will make tonights start? I really like the kid although if he’s headed to the AFL surely we need more evidence Happ can get it done.
September 28th, 2008 at 8:53 am
Can anyone post the video from the last inning on here? More than what they give on phillies.com?
September 28th, 2008 at 10:08 am
Great Picture . . . Great defensive performance by Jimmy Rollins. As a baseball player myself, I was most impressed by his handling of that high hop shot he took up around his head – I have almost come to expect plays like the last one of the game from him.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Any reason you guys are rooting against the Mets? Come on, how awesome would be a Mets/Phillis NLCS be?
September 28th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Sad to say, but I’m pulling for the Mets to knock the Brewers out of the wildcard. I’d rather face the Dodgers, than the Brew Crew in the first round. The Cubbies will spank the Mets so black & blue, that they will look like their still wearing their warm up uniforms…Than we’ll return the favor for the Mets, and do the same to the Cubs! Lets go Phils!
September 28th, 2008 at 10:36 am
After looking a little at it I think we stand a better chance if the Brewers get in which send them here with Sabathia in game 2 at the earliest and a longshot for game 5 with a weak bullpen only Gallardo pitching well in the rotation and a line-up with a lot of slumping guys. The Dodgers on the otherhand would send Lowe, Billinsley and Kuroda with a top bullpen and hotter line-up.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:38 am
I dunno man, I want the Brewers. Sheets is done and CC won’t be available for the first game. The Dodgers will be well rested and Manny at the Bank would be a nightmare.
Mets have owned us this year and don’t think I could take that sort of anxiety if we had to face them in the playoffs. We’ve clobbered all of the other potential opponents this year. I don’t want the Muts to even have the satisfaction of making the playoffs at all. I want them at home in October.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Dude, I don’t know…At this point, I don’t think ”Nothing” scares the Phils. If anything ”We” scare the whole National leauge. I hope I’m right, but I don’t think nothing is going to get in our way right now…Not Sabathia, Not Manny, Not the Mets. This is the first time since 93′ we had over 90 wins, and look what happened that year.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:54 am
AC in NJ I’m right here. Did you think I was going to go away?!? Congrats to the Phils for a ridiculously good September again. Lets see how they will do in the playoffs this year.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Chris.I I thought nothing scared you guys last year??
September 28th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I saw this posted somewhere and thought it’d be interesting to share.
These are the days in first place by team. For those who say the Phils don’t deserve it, they’ve had first for nearly half the season and double that of any of the other teams. That to me constitutes “deserving the division.”
Phils: 79
Marlins: 42
Mets: 39
Nationals or Braves: 2
September 28th, 2008 at 11:03 am
That is why I don’t even call this a collapse, IMO if the Phils didn’t win it would’ve been a collapse. You guys were 7 1/2 ahead.
September 28th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Rivlez,
Last year has nothing to do with this year. That’s behind us. Our bullpen stunk it up last year. This year is a whole diffrent ballgame (literally). Let me give you a clear example…The 2008 Mets team is equivalent to the 2007 Phillies…Awesome offense, but horrible bullpen.
SJ Mike thanks for posting…Hopefully Mets fans will stop their bitching, and come to grip with reality.
September 28th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Rivlez, I’ve been saying that for awhile. The Mets just aren’t as good as the Phils in my honest opinion. They didn’t collapse to lose the divison, we won it.
September 28th, 2008 at 11:10 am
RiVLez, that’s why when the Mets were up 3 games, a 3 game loss in the standings is hardly a collapse, especially with over a month left to play.
Tim said in some earlier post that the argument that the Phils needed the Mets to collapse to win anything, he said something to the tune of “It takes two to tango.” Someone has got to win it and someone has got to lose it.
I think we all universally said at the beginning of this season with the acquisition of Santana for the Mets and Lidge for the Phils that would be a dogfight and come down all the way to the end. Nobody was running away with the division this year and that has shown.
I just get sick of the “you guys don’t deserve the division” talk. The person who ends up winning it deserves it because they obviously won the right number of games to get to that point.
September 28th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Way to get that Ashburn award up and running.
September 28th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Well said SJ Mike. Couldn’t have said it better myself. You know what though? We don’t have to explain ourselves…We won the division. The Mets fans can cry all they want! Right now at this point of the season it’s about us facing our next opponent . We’ll worry about spanking the Mets when, and ”if” we face them again, and finally put an end to all this ”who’s better” sh*t. They just need to get off our di*ks, and concentrate on todays game, and tomorrows game if there is one. There just jealous, thats all.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I was there and im still elated from the experience! I was at Game 5 in 1997 when the Flyers beat the Rangers for the Eastern Conference Finals. This was every bit as amazing.
I would like to see Golson on the post season roster to have an extra righty and his speed to produce runs but i know hes too untested and they wont do it.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Congrats to all. I was there as well and it was truly a special night. I will never forget it.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Haha, should be an interesting game.
Lineup:
S Taguchi LF
E Bruntlett SS
T Iguchi 2B
G Jenkins RF
C Coste 1B
M Cervenak 3B
G Golson CF
L Marson C
K Kendrick P
September 28th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Nepa, I am totally in love with that lineup for today.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
As am I, can’t wait to see Golson and Marson get a start.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
i was tailgating at PSU when they won. Mad car horns started blasting and a lets go phillies chant broke out
September 28th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
it’s great to see Chase Utley smiling in that pic! go all the way PHILLIES!!!!!
September 28th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Does anyone have any decently large sized pictures to use as a computer background – either from the actual game or, better yet, the celebration on field or in the locker room? If you come across one, post it in this comment thread!!!
September 28th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Back to Back! Damn it feels good! Especially since the Mutts are OUT! These guys deserve as well as the Phans! I love the fact that we’re practically getting no press about our winning the division. I kinda like that we’re being played as some kind of underdog. I’m hopeful we’re going to do well this time around. Reminds me of the 1980 team when everyone thought the ‘Stros would beat us.
March 2nd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
I really liked the way they came off
