Gameday: Brewers (83-64) At Phillies (80-67)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, September 13, 2008 02:55 PM
Headline: Hamels must prove ace-worthy against Brewers
The Major Players: Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, Brad Lidge, Manny Parra, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa.
The Number: 3 games behind (Mets) NL East; 3 games behind (Brewers) Wild Card
Thursday the Phillies took Ben Sheets to task, hitting him for five runs in a 6-3 win. Ryan Howard agains proved mighty, hitting his 43rd home run of the season. After a rainout Friday, Cole Hamels tries to rebound from a rough start against the Mets. Rain is again in the forecast.
Never Fails With Tails: Whatever the Phillies called, they called right. The Phils won every coin toss in which they participated, meaning they’d host any one-game playoff if tied for the NL East division lead or NL Wild Card lead.
Brew Baker: Many of the Phillies have never faced Manny Parra. But the Brew Crew has faced Hamels. This season, Prince Fielder is hitting .500 with two homers and four RBI off Hamels.
Road Cole: Hamels has thrown exactly 104 innings home and away, but has 22 less strikeouts at home.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (12-9) 3.12 ERA
Brewers: Manny Parra (10-7) 4.03 ERA
Gametime: 3:55 p.m. EST
TV: Fox
Weather: 81, rain
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gameday beer: On this rainy night (scratch that — day), go with Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale. A red will keep you bitter, but still light enough to enjoy this pitching matchup, if it happens. Let’s wear our red in style tonight (day), and do so eating some grilled salmon. Delicious.
Go Phillies!

September 13th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Woohoooo, runs for Cole.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I’m happy that Utley got that nice, compact swing he had during the first-half
September 13th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
what the fu@@ is wrong with burrell
September 13th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Pat seems to get really down on himself when he’s not hitting.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
No lead is safe with this team
September 13th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Where has this team been all season?
September 13th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Awrighty!
September 13th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
That’s what I say, Phil.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
If they play like this the rest of the way down the stretch the division/wild card is ours.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I’m blacked out from watching this game, so disappointing.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
The Brewers pen is trash. We should be able to score 10 runs this game.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Way to kill a rally Pat.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
bye bye pat hate to see you go. love to get a clutch outfielder with some speed
September 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Why does the stadium look so empty?
September 13th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Does anyone thing the phillies will take pat’s 14 million and spend it on a top free agent outfielder. Or will they give a little more to werth and put him in left. jenkins in right.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Like that guy just said, I hope they don’t think they’re done for the day, gotta keep hitting.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Yikes, Jenkins in right full time?
September 13th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Well do you really think they are going to eat jenkins contract?
September 13th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
I guess not, I just saw he’s making 5mm, a little overpaid?
September 13th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
nice play pat
September 13th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
The Phillies might be able to salary dump Jenkins.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Brewers and Mets scored simultaneously. God is conspiring against us.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
That was a disgusting play, Pat.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I will drive jenkins to the airport. Free of charge and carry his luggage. Go to the post office for him to do change of address. Try to get someone to buy his house. Get the moving company to not charge him.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
I dont care about next year yet…..Just want us to win today .we need to tack on some more runs….I think the mets are winning right now.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Mets up 2-0 going into the 6th…
September 13th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Looks like Fielder has the flu…man’s coughing like crazy
September 13th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Cole Hamels is looking like an ace today…what do you guys and girls think?
September 13th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
He’s throwing a little too many balls, but those 2 runs at least were on a misjudged play by Burrell.
I say Hamels should get the 7th.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
The Offense Is Back!!
September 13th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
YahooooooJROLL
September 13th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
In-sure-ance.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Richie: Cole is looking like an ace. Doesn’t have his best stuff, but using moxie extreme.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
He would be winning 7-0 if it weren’t ‘t for Pat’s mistake
September 13th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
C’mon Braves!!! help us out
September 13th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
If I run the Phillies, it looks to me that Burrell has played himself out of a contract offer this winter. Within the last month or so, he has committed a handful of errors, as well as hitting a dreadful percentage at the dish.
Does anyone else think that the Phillies will resign Burrell? I hope they don’t bring him back, but I think they will bring him back because he won’t command a huge deal, and they would rather spend 12-15 million/year over 2-4 years on an average player, than spend around 20 million on a front-line starter.
This team seriously needs to add another contact bat to this lineup, preferably in LF.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Congrats Phils on not giving your season away just yet!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
In response to whether they will keep/let go and use Burrell’s money there really aren’t any worthwhile outfielders in the free agent market this offseason. There’s Manny Ramierez, but he’ll want 25 and someone will give it to him, and the next name on the list is Adam Dunn who is really just a poor man’s Howard, so that won’t do. It’s something ridiculous like only 2 of the outfield free agents are under the age of 30. So you keep him because you can’t replace him.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I agree Tim..he was good today
September 13th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Tom mccarthy is a logologist
September 13th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Santana is out of the Mets game…
Go Braves
September 13th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Logologist-interesting hobby….
September 13th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Bases loaded, 0 outs for the Braves!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Scott Schoeneweis in for the Mets now. I feel dirty, but Go Braves.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Now Brian Stokes coming in with loaded, 0 outs.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Bases loaded no one out for the Braves…with a nice little cameo from the Mets bullpen. If they won’t let me watch the Phillies today I better get to see the Mets implode another solid Santana start.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Let’s all do that stupid tomahawk chop !
September 13th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
GAME TIED!!!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Yeah Franceour, nice shot. Lets get a lead now.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Manny, correction, Game tied with 2 on and no outs still!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
francour !
September 13th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
TIE GAME!!!!!! I love the Mets bullpen. First pitch swinging. The Mets had the bases loaded with no one out two innings ago and hit into a double play (force at home) and then a strike out. This is awesome.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
We gave up 1 run…and the Braves got 1 too…DEAL
September 13th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Braves take lead, 3-2
September 13th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Shit, it’s our 8th inning….
September 13th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
*tomahawk chop*
September 13th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
I’m pressing the “Jump” button on my remote every 5 seconds ha
September 13th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
It’s kinda funny, but sad also that we all collectively hold our breaths and stop posting during every 8th inning now.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
OK…one more inning to go in NY!
And the scary 8th is over
September 13th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Hey, if we win this game, we’ll be 1 game over .500 since June 9th.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Smith, I don’t really care. We could be 2 from the Wild Card AND NL East. That’s not bad at all. September is our month!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
With the nightcap, the Phils could potentially be 1.5 behind in the division.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Manny, and everyone else – you’re on crack. Sure, maybe the Mets will lose this game today. Hell, maybe they’ll lose tonight too. But you’re all kidding yourselves if you think they will collapse and at the same time we’re gonna go on some kind of run.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Smith, 3 games with over 15 games left is hardly a collapse. It is extremely doable.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
I’m not a fan of Lidge in this type of situation
September 13th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Smith, its baseball. They play the games for a reason.
I don’t think the Mets are gonna get through the night game. It gonna rain. They just lost the day game though!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Mets lose.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Mets lose!!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Phillies win!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Mets fans are calling it the “Curse of the Magic Number” on Metsblog.com.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Who else do you put in this situation Manny?
September 13th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
3 in the loss collumn. Maybe there’s a chance. But like Tim, I ended the season 3 days ago.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Always try and keep that glimmer of hope, smith.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Niese is throwing tonight for the mets.
I think that makes Jo-Jo Reyes the favorite.
I wish people like Smith would go troll on the message boards at Mets.com, we need some positive energy here.
September 13th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
If you ended the season 3 days ago, ,why are you wasting your time watching the games and posting on the site then?!?!
September 13th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
I was looking for next years free agents. When i saw that the phillies are the oldest team in baseball. wow? All that experience and we are struggling to make the playoff.
September 13th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Nice job FIGHTINS!!!
It ain’t over til its over.. so lets get on a little run here boys!
Phillies are the “oldest” team in baseball because they have guys like Moyer, Eaton, Jenkins, Eyre, Coste, etc…
Most of their core is 28 or so.. They are still “young” where it matters most
September 13th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
the kinda shit that REALLY pisses me off about this team… is knowing using up the better guys in your bullpen with a 5 run, then a 4 run lead… when you have two games to play tomrw..
Why not use Condrey in there.. unless you know for a fact that you can’t use Lidge twice tomrw if need be.. I know it would be a stress on his arm, but both of those games count just as much, if not more, than this one did.
…Hamels picks up WIN #13.. he should/could have 22 wins right now if you look at his season.
April 2nd, 8 IP, 1 ER = LOSS
May 30th, 7 IP, 0 ER = No Decision
June 11th, 8 IP, 2 ER = ND
July 13th, 7 IP, 2 ER = ND
July 20th, 8 IP, 2 ER = ND
Aug 12th, 7 IP, 2 ER = ND
Aug 28th, 7 IP, 1 ER = ND
Thats 20 wins right there…
And others included:
Aug 7th, 6.1 IP, 2 ER = LOSS
July 8th, 7 IP, 2 ER = LOSS
So anyone that doesn’t think he’s an “ACE” needs to follow baseball more closely cause this kid is going to be great for a long time
September 13th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
He might be great starter but it won’t be with the phillies.I would bet he leaves when he gets the chance. He is already mad about this years contract which was automatially renew. He could have sign for a little more but refused. The phillies tried get him to sign for I guess public relation. But he wouldn’t
September 13th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
fun game to be there live for. hamels delivered in a clutch situation, not his best outing but definitely good enough to get the job done. the bullpen was solid and brad lidge continues his mvp season for this team. now go for the throat and take two more tomorrow!
September 13th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
And everyone of those players will be here next year. and they still will be the oldest,
September 13th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
ill be down there for both games tomorrow
September 13th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
I wonder how much the mets will offer rodriquez. He will get more than lidge, wagner and its got to be in the fifteen million range. That’s why the phillies really need another starter a number one. It would help offset a closer if you have better starters. help keep him out of games if your starters don’t give up a lot of runs. with there offense the phillies would be okay
September 13th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Jon Niese throwing a beauty out there tonight
September 13th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Haha – niese throws 8 shutout innings. Just another, and one of the many indications that this is not last year. last year, the Mets lose this game 10-3
September 13th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Niese was amazing tonight. That’s why he’s the top rated SP in the Mets minors.
September 13th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
METS WIN! PUT IT THE BOOKS!!!
September 13th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Niese’s curveball is a thing of beauty. No Uncle Charlie here, this is Lord Charles! This kid has real potential.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
how could you end their season while only a couple games back? i personally am not even counting the marlins out of it yet.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
2 down 2 to go . . .
I think Burrell must go. We are lucky those 2 runs he let score tonight didn’t come back to bite us in the ass.
I know the free agent market doesn’t look promising, but that’s where you make a trade. There are a few guys that might be available in the winter that won’t cost the farm: Juan Pierre, Gary Matthews Jr, Juan Rivera, Jay Payton, Emil Brown, David DeJesus, and Chris Duncan just to name some. Out of all the guys listed I like Juan Pierre the most, but none of the guys is a long-term fix, but they would come cheap and would be able to hold down the fort until someone is ready to come up in the minors. We just need someone we can trust to not go months on end without touching the ball, even if we take a hit in power and rbis. Also, a defensive upgrade with some speed would be nice.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
my money is on the Brewers taking both games of the doubleheader and putting everyone back at status quo. all of the ass dragging phillies played over their heads in the first 2 games.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Glad to know you think about baseball with such a rational and logical mind (please note sarcasm).
September 13th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Nice to take the first 2 games of this series now lets go get the next 2…Were gonna need to score all the runs we can for Blanton because he’s sucked lately and will prolly stuggle tomorrow…It’s gonna be tough to see how Myers does on 3 days rest,as long as he give us a chance to win the game it’ll be good.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
J-Man, although I do think it is overrated, the majority of the Brewers’ lineup are righties with the exception of Prince Fielder, so the righty on righty matchups should favor us to an extent.
Just got to jump on the Brewers’ starters and get to their bullpen early.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
KM:I agree it’s time for Pat the Bat to go because he wants another 4 or 5 year contract and we don’t wanna be stuck with him sucking for another 5 years…Vladimir Guerrero’s a free agent maybe they can make a run at him,he always kills the Phils when ever we face him.
September 14th, 2008 at 12:07 am
thanks for the compliment but I didn’t have to do too much more than to read this blog. everyone was saying how flat and dead the phillies are…. a .500 team (which, by definition, means that if they won 2, they’re due to lose 2). do you mean that after they won 2 games, everyone’s suddenly saying they’re gonna win the next 2? that would make you all a bunch of frontrunners!
oh yeah… never mind.
September 14th, 2008 at 1:08 am
Hey, remember me from my show Man Vs. Wild on Discovery Channel? Well, I just heard the news that Jamie Moyer is retiring from baseball next year and will be my new stunt double. I couldn’t be more thrilled, we found my perfect look-alike! Good talking to you guys, but I gotta jump on a flight to the thick jungles of Vietnam. Later!
Bear Grylls
September 14th, 2008 at 1:10 am
Sorry you had to find out like that guys but to me, there’s more to life than baseball.
…Ah, who am I kidding? I’m playing til I’m 90!
GO PHILS!
September 14th, 2008 at 1:28 am

September 14th, 2008 at 1:30 am
HA HA ha ha …ha……ha ……..ha ….. (me laughing in the distance)
September 14th, 2008 at 1:50 am
Good game guys. But this offense; Outside of 3 in the first, 2 in the 2nd and Rollin’s 2 run shot in the sixth, the offense was flatter than Israel Lafah in the other 5 innings. No offense at all in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th. 3 Phils reached in those 5 innings — all on walks. Where is the Burrell of May?
September 14th, 2008 at 2:39 am
gplad, wth are you smoking lol?
September 14th, 2008 at 7:23 am
Mark you are a IDIOT if you score seven runs it’s a good offense game. What difference does it make if it’s in seven innings or three it’s seven runs.Average runs per game.do they list the innings you score in. Can’t understand how you can post thinking you know anything about this game.
September 14th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Dave Bush is beatable, but unfortunately we have Blanton on the mound. The bullpen should be primed and ready to go by the 3rd or 4th. Hopefully we can get 5-6 out of Blanton and hope for less than a 3 run deficit.
September 14th, 2008 at 9:16 am
I would have the bullpen up in the first so we don’t give up more than five get him out fast so we have a chance.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:41 am
I hate Blanton. A lot of people said that he got little run support. I still am trying to figure out how that makes sense. He wasn’t losing one run games. He was giving up ton’s of hits lots of runs. Unless he was on the 27 yankees who scored over ten runs a game. maybe with that team he could have been ten and ten instead of five and twelve. Who was the scout who saw him and gave that report.
September 14th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
phillies in blanton starts are 6-4 whether you like him or not. he’s been a positive addition to the team and i think he’ll come up with one of his best performances of the season today.
October 19th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
