Gameday: Brewers (83-65) At Phillies (81-67)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, September 14, 2008 12:40 PM

Headline: All eyes on Blanton in game one
The Major Players: Joe Blanton, Greg Dobbs, Pat Burrell, Ryan Madson, Dave Bush, Ray Durham, JJ Hardy, David Riske
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa.
The Number: 2.5 games behind (Mets) NL East; 2 games behind (Brewers) Wild Card

It’s Sunday, Sept. 14, and the Phillies stand two games behind the Brewers, with a shot at tying them up for the Wild Card lead at the end of the night. The focus will be Joe Blanton, who has struggled mightly lately. He’ll need to go deep to give the Phils a chance to grab the win.

No Right Way: To Blanton’s advantage, the Brewers are hitting just .247 against right-handed pitching, with a .738 OPS. And today is the first time Blanton will have ever faced Milwaukee.

Brew Baker: Phillies left-handed batters are hitting .263 this season, all the reason to stack the lineup with them.

The Bat Returneth?: Then again, Pat Burrell could lift himself from his slump today. He’s hitting .400 with three homers and five RBI against Dave Bush for his career.

Century Mark: With a home run today, the Phils will have hit 100 homers at Citizens Bank Park this season.

Phillies: Joe Blanton (7-12) 4.86 ERA
Brewers: Dave Bush (9-10) 4.23 ERA
Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 88, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Dobbs/Ruiz/Blanton

Your gameday beer: As summer departs and we get one beautiful Sunday of hot weather, crack open a hefeweizen. We go to Widmer, which isn’t a bad alternative to your Blue Moons or whatever basic white/wheat/hef you enjoy. On tap at a good lot of bars, it’s served with a lemon. So if you’re a fruiter, this one works. Have some mini quesadillas with this.

Go Phillies!

  1. Choke Utley Says:

why do we keep strolling pat burell out there?

And who believes this guy could get over 10 mil in free agentcy? (only if he has Ahole Boras representing him) I could care less if we have him back, he goes hot for a little while but he always has a half of season every year where he cant hit.

  2. Craig Says:

    CUE bURRELL GOING 3 – 5 3RBI’s and a HR.

  3. SJ Mike Says:

    From CWPhilly.com

“Friday’s Phillies-Brewers Game rescheduled for Sunday Night (Sept. 14) WILL be televised on The CW Philly at 7:30 PM.”

  4. Craig Says:

    Damn caps.

  5. Durbinator Says:

I am guessing that Stairs will start for Burrell in the second game?

  6. mikemike Says:

I didn’t see the lineup. dont tell me. Burrell is in left. Cheap Bastard owners. They want there money worth. will throw him out there nomatter what.

  7. mikemike Says:

no more blanton where is don m he likes blanton. I know he is really montgomery . But he has to omit blanton stinks.

  8. Johnny Says:

How is a fastball over the middle of the plate a good pitch to throw 0-2 or 2-2? Oh wait Blanton, it isn’t.

  9. mikemike Says:

So in our pennant drive we pick up Joe blanton, matt stairs, igucho, eyre. way to go gillick that a way to strength the team

  10. Durbinator Says:

Eyre has been a good pick-up and Stairs has been good in his limited playing time. We didn’t give up anything for Iguchi.

The Blanton trade was bad at the time and still is now though.

  11. Johnny Says:

Yeah pat …. keep that ball in play

  12. mikemike Says:

point is we needed a top starter not blanton. It the same with the off season instead of going out and getting either a top pitcher or third basemen for fifteen million we spend it on three cheap players.

  13. Durbinator Says:

I agree. I am just saying that generally the Front Office does better with in-season deals than in the off-season. We should have been going after Sabathia or even Harden but apparently did not have the prospects because our farm system is so weak. The Blanton trade got rid of two of our better prospects for another 4th starter while we needed a 1 or 2 starter.

  14. mikemike Says:

So we give up our number one rated prospect[cardenas] outman[seventh rated] and spencer[fourteen ] doesn’t make any sense. When the cubs got harden for less. Our general manager couldn’t sell oakland on our prospect for harden, and raped us for blanton.

  15. Durbinator Says:

mikemike: I am agreeing with you. I’m just saying that the other in-season deals besides Blanton were good or at least not bad. Even last year (Romero) and the year before (Moyer).

  16. Evan Says:

Way to get things started Chase!

  17. NJ Says:

Nicely put mikemike, Beane new exactly what he wanted from Philly and he got it. It’s tough to say we should have been in the mix for Harden but given the deal we should have been able to offer a competitive package without denting the system. Cardenas was treated with fear and Outman with distain and the incoming FO needs to change the way players are drafted/recruited.

Blanton’s a decent pick-up and Cincy were almost going to give up much more than we did prior to the season but it’s tough to see where he fits in with his salary escalating through arbitration and the Moyer/Kendrick back-end. He doesn’t have the quality of pitches to be a number 2 and going into the next season as a 3 your relying on Myers to be the 2 with an aweful lot of time on his hands to regress again.

  18. Johnny Says:

thats because Oakland wasn’t going to give Harden to phlly for anyone other than Carrasco … but i totally agree … going after CC this offseason is not a good idea. the money he is going to command is better spent on developing our farm boys and getting carrasco and jamillio …who knows maybe even that egomaniacal savery up to the big league club.

  19. NJ Says:

Gillicks made a few good support moves (Moyer, Bruntlett, Eyre) but he’s had an aweful lot of luck with waiver/off the radar pick-ups (Dobbs, Durbin, Romero, Werth) but Lidge could have easily gone the other way and the other major deals have been poor and he let a few guys go he shouldn’t have. There was no way in hell Gio Gonzalez should have been made available in any deal barring a blockbuster for one.

  20. NJ Says:

I think Jayson Werth might have made a deal for Harden an option, a lot of wise baseball minds say trade strength for need.

  21. Johnny Says:

Whats up Dobbs!!! way to bring that glove.

  22. Evan Says:

some good defense to get outta a bad start to the inning

  23. NJ Says:

They have to start jumping on bad pitching… You can’t chase Manny Parra and then make Dave Bush hold you to 4 baserunners

  24. ataraxite Says:

Is it just me or does Greg Dobbs=Ben Affleck?

  25. Evan Says:

    wow good catch

  26. NEPA Says:

No, THIS is Greg Dobbs – http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2501483264/nm0001555.

  27. Johnny Says:

haha duder’s a dead ringer … add the soul patch minus the glasses and it IS Dobbs.

  28. SJ Mike Says:

Boo ya Ryan Howard! Way to get back into it!

  29. Johnny Says:

Ryan Howard has done it again!!!!

  30. NJ Says:

Well Howards pretty much back now… Lucky there’s still a lot of baseball left…….

  31. Jason Says:

NJ no theres not you could say that if 2 months of baseball left

  32. NEPA Says:

Yea, I honestly think they might be twin brothers.

  33. NJ Says:

sarcasm fully intended, Howards stats show up nicely for arbitration don’t they and were suppose to believe he’s a gamer?

  34. Durbinator Says:

Trading Werth would have made this outfield offense awful, especially with Burrell’s recent slump.

  35. Brian Says:

    Great job Ruiz.

  36. Brian Says:

Is there anyone watching this game it’s really quiet in here

  37. SJ Mike Says:

8th inning jitters I think, Brian. It gets very quiet every 8th inning recently.

  38. Johnny Says:

luckily the arbitrator will be looking at at .244 avg … and an inability to throw from 1st … not just the 44+ home runs

  39. Brian Says:

I know 8th inning has been a killer, werth great job. Lets get him in

  40. SJ Mike Says:

But yes, to agree with you, Ruiz did a great job getting his glove on the ground so that there wasn’t a shred of doubt for the first base umpire.

  41. NEPA Says:

I feel like Sunday day games are always really quiet in here. Tonight should be much more entertaining.

  42. Joe Says:

Bullpen is in for the Mets, and the Braves have two on with one out.

  43. Brian Says:

Never see chase bunt. Not sure I agree with that of course they walk howard.

  44. NEPA Says:

Interesting idea there, I think I like it.

  45. Brian Says:

Joe smith has been good for them about the only one in that pen that has been

  46. NEPA Says:

Haha, they’re bringing in Gagne. We better take the lead off this garbage.

  47. Evan Says:

This isn’t a bad situation for the Phils to be in. Lets see if Burell can start doing something to redeem himself.

  48. SJ Mike Says:

Ned Yost looked in absolute pain!

  49. NEPA Says:

YES. What a slide by Werth.

  50. Johnny Says:

yeah holy diver!!!! way to drive in werth!!

  51. Brian Says:

Wow! I would have held him.

  52. NEPA Says:

    Wow. Huge.

  53. Johnny Says:

    Shaneohmy !!!!!

  54. SJ Mike Says:

    Can the Brewers say “deflating?”

  55. Johnny Says:

    god bless humidity

  56. Evan Says:

    VIC VIC VIC VIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Brian Says:

That is home field advantage….fly out in at least 12 other nl parks!

  58. NEPA Says:

Brian, was it home field advantage when Ray Durham’s pop fly went out? Or Manny Ramirez hit a shallow pop out for a Grand Slam a few years ago? Both teams are playing in the same ballpark.

  59. Phils Phan Says:

Feliz always brings that extra hustle.

    /rollseyes

  60. Evan Says:

Yeah, home field advantage is about the crowd not the ballpark. Although I think you can attribute some of Howard’s numbers to Citizen’s Bank Park. Not that he can’t hit em out in any ballpark, but he picks up a bunch of HRs from that short left field.

Get outta here Feliz. Shit, how do you get the majors and still make mistakes like that.

  61. NEPA Says:

1, the number of outs there were or the number of brain cells Feliz has?

  62. Brian Says:

Well it’s homefield advantage when it helps us….it does kill us a lot too but I’ll take it.

Shit Feliz where are you going

  63. Manny Says:

Howard, Pat, Vic: ALL HUGE TODAY!
    Let’s go Phils!!

  64. Brian Says:

    Lets get a sweep tonight!

  65. SJ Mike Says:

2 on, no outs in the 9th for the Braves.

  66. NEPA Says:

Braves have 2 on, no out. How great would that be if they can pull something off here.

  67. Chris.I Says:

Anyone know what channel game 2 is aired on tonight?

  68. SJ Mike Says:

Chris, according to the Inquirer and CWPhilly.com, CW Philly 57.

  69. christopher Says:

what a win! hot damn, i was skeptical about that one with all the problems they were having with bush. but a brilliant 8th inning, forcing shouse to throw to righties for fear of bringing in gagne, and then ROCKING him. oh and for all the trash people were talking about blanton in the other post, it looks like my last comment was the most accurate: “phillies in blanton starts are 6-4 whether you like him or not. he’s been a positive addition to the team and i think he’ll come up with one of his best performances of the season today.”

bring it home for the sweep tonight!

  70. Chris.I Says:

Thank God..I was scared it wasn’t going to be aired. Thanks alot Mike

  71. NEPA Says:

    Holy Shit Layne Norton!!

  72. NEPA Says:

    Holy Shit Greg Norton!!

  73. SJ Mike Says:

No problem. As of yesterday it was a blackout, but I guess they renegotiated the contracts given the importance of the game.

  74. SJ Mike Says:

    Atlanta takes the lead 5-4!

  75. NEPA Says:

lol layne norton is a bodybuilder, don’t know why that popped into my head.

  76. Craig Says:

Atlanta just hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th to go 5-4 up against the Mets.

  77. Evan Says:

The Mets bullpen looks like they are back to form

  78. amazins Says:

oh man this is getting interesting again!!

  79. NEPA Says:

    yep, 6-4 Braves now.

  80. jeff Says:

The time machine worked. I’ve successfully traveled back in time to 2007.

  81. amazins Says:

i can’t believe what this team is putting us through. =/

  82. R.Mac Says:

    LETS GO BRAVES!!!!!

  83. SJ Mike Says:

Question for everyone and be honest. What would you rather have?

    1) Division
    2) Wild Card
    3) Who cares, playoffs are playoffs.

  84. jeff Says:

Division. There is no way the Mets are capable of winning it.

  85. Georgie Says:

I think it’s kind of cool to win your division, but I’ll take either.

  86. amazins Says:

how can you say that jeff? it’s up in the air right now

  87. R.Mac Says:

wow homeboy on post game live just about lost his mind doing the highlights of the game

  88. Evan Says:

    Mike,

I’ll take number 3. The division would be very nice but the way I see it we just have to get in.

  89. Craig Says:

    7-4 now

  90. SJ Mike Says:

So pretty much getting in is good enough, either way? I’m in the “who cares” category because just got to get to the playoffs and make it happen from there.

  91. jeff Says:

Up in the air? Are we watching the same games amazins? The Mets can’t beat even the crummiest of teams, and they haven’t exactly proven a whole lot of stability. Sorry, no division for New York. Even if they get the Wild Card (they won’t) its still a kick in the groin.

  92. Mark Says:

Great Day! Phils win game 1, the Mets are getting their ears pinned back and Myers goes in game 2. Get out the brooms. Hopefully, by morning 1/2 game back of mets and tied with Brewers! WOW! Let’s go Phils.

  93. jeff Says:

I don’t even get worried when the Mets load the bases with 0 out… because they still won’t score.

  94. SJ Mike Says:

Mark, at most, we’d only be able to be 1 game behind the Mets with a win and tied with the wildcard. Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet though. Still a game to play tonight.

  95. Evan Says:

Jeff, what if Delgado is up? I’d be yelling and throwing batteries at the TV if that happened, especially if it was Kendrick or Blanton pitching.

I don’t think you’re giving the Mets enough credit.

  96. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

jeff, this is baseball teams go up and down. Did you forget about the Phils losing 2 of 3 from the WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL last week? And now we could sweep the wild card leader in the Brewers. The Mets will not roll over for us just yet I don’t think.

  97. jeff Says:

It’s as good as ours. I will accept apologies in October. :)

  98. SJ Mike Says:

This guy on the Phillies postgame on CW is…..eccentric.

  99. Eli Says:

    god exists

  100. Evan Says:

    Woo, Mets lose!

  101. NC Jason Says:

How do you spell blown save? M…E…T…S

  102. SJ Mike Says:

Yes, the Mets lost, but don’t get ahead of ourselves just yet. We still have the nightcap and even if we win that, we’d still be 1 behind in the division. Concentrate on only what we can control right now, which is the Wild Card and the Brewers, who we can tie with a win tonight.

  103. Rob Cowie Says:

There is still way too much season left to debate if you’d take the wild card or division. Especially since we are talking in respects to the Phillies making the playoffs. They are still in 2nd place in both division and wild card standings.

So, I think it absurd to debate topics which do not even apply to them at this current time.

And also, it feels good to take 3 or 4 hopefully from the brewers. But, I’m still not confident in a team who gets shalacked by the nationals.

  104. jeff Says:

Oh shut up. The Mets will implode. All the Phil’s gotta do is play .500 baseball (if that)

  105. MikeB Says:

Yeh, hard to understand why the Phillies did so poorly against the Nationals in that last series in Washington D.C.. Perhaps the Phils do not take the Nats seriously enough as the Nats give them a hard time in general but Washington is an improving ball club as their recent play indicates and the month of September brings out the spoiler role in some teams. They had some players returning from injuries and Ryan Zimmerman stated that he finally felt like he was back 100 percent from an earlier injury.

If everything is on the line during the last series of the year against Washington, the Phillies are going to have to find a way to beat these guys and that means you do not throw Kyle Kendrick against Tim Redding. You throw your best pitcher up against Redding.

  106. Richie Allen Says:

I dont care about 1)next Year 2)next years trades
All I know is we are in it and its fun,
Just like last year…every game is exciting..This is great
    Cant wait till tonight…Go Phils
