Gameday: Nationals (59-101) At Phillies (91-70)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, September 28, 2008 12:50 PM

Headline: Time to relax
The Major Players: Kyle Kendrick, Greg Golson, Lou Marson, Mike Cervenak
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa.

Kyle Kendrick gets a chance to redeem himself after a horrendous second half. He’ll face much of the Washington AAA squad. Meanwhile, the Phils will tote out a collection of AAAA-quality talent. Greg Golson and Lou Marson get their first starts, while Chris Coste will play first base. So Taguchi will lead off. Tadahito Iguchi gets the start at second. Mike Cervenak will man third base. Ahhh, I love it.

It’s Fan Appreciation Day at Citizens Bank Park, but it ain’t the last game. No, the Phils will be back home Wednesday to open the five-game National League Division Series.

Enjoy this beautiful Sunday as champs once again.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (11-9) 5.46 ERA
Nationals: Odalis Perez (7-11) 4.27 ERA
Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 73, showers
Lineup: Taguchi/Bruntlett/Iguchi/Jenkins/Coste/Cervenak/Golson/Marson/Kendrick

  1. CT Says:

I’m glad we have the Ashburn award image fixed! i’m glad we have a chance to see what some of these young guys can do, especially Golson and Marson.

POST SEASON 2008!!!! LET’S GO PHILS!!!!!

  2. Ryk Says:

Anyone know the schedule yet for the postseason? Thus far, since the teams haven’t been established, MLB.com doesnt have dates and times up yet. I know the Phils have a game Wednesday, but do we know what time? I’m on the west coast and missed every single game last year in the playoffs because they had the day game while I was working.

  3. Rob Cowie Says:

There are dates but no times yet since teams are decided. The tenitive schedule is on mlb.com

  4. Joe Says:

Seeing Taguchi smack that double brings back some fond memories of 2007.

  5. Rob Cowie Says:

These people at shea at jacked up for this game

  6. CT Says:

two easy innings for Kendrick so far. i guess without the pressure he can actually put together a decent start. hopefully working in the instructional league can improve his command and arsenal of pitches because i think he has the ability to be a much better pitcher than he’s been this year.

  7. SJ Mike Says:

    Shea’s pretty confident, Rob?

  8. SJ Mike Says:

Got to hand it to Kendrick. After reading all of his quotes and everything, he seems determined to be a mainstay next year.

  9. Chase Mutley Says:

There goes the KK no-hit bid ;)

  10. CT Says:

well, at least he was good for 2 innings

  11. Rob Cowie Says:

I’m glad kendrick is in mid-season form

  12. Rob Cowie Says:

It is, they are hanging on every pitch. It reminds me of last years clincher where the phils needed a win and a loss to make it.

  13. NJ Says:

And the second-coming of Lieberthal has arrived… Congrats to Lou

  14. SJ Mike Says:

It’s interesting seeing our backups get clutch hits like this.

Congrats to Marson on his first hit.

  15. Joe Says:

for the benefit of those of us watching the game on MLB Gameday, what is the injury delay following the Bruntlett double scoring Taguchi?

  16. CT Says:

wow Taguchi actually did something! amazing.

  17. SJ Mike Says:

Nats pitcher Perez taken out of the game. They didn’t say what was wrong, but he was getting hit so Acta took him out.

  18. grrrumpy miner Says:

Actually have the Cubs/Brewers choking on hot mustard and very hot mustard cherry peppers rooting on the Damn Cubs.Mets still scoreless and i’ll give my wright eye for at least tomorrow.I hope there is a champagne bath today along with the Mets greatest of all time.I hope Seaver,Strawberry,Koozman and Even Yogi and the Say Hey Kid Willie Mays can partake too,and show them how to really celebrate

  19. grrrumpy miner Says:

GO OLLIE GO! No score bot. 5th

  20. NEPA Says:

Well, Golson strikes out a lot I guess.

  21. SJ Mike Says:

I think that’s his drawback. Golson is fast, he is supposed to be great defensively, but his bat may not be good with major league pitching.

    Florida took lead 1-0.

  22. CT Says:

woah, they’re bringing in the big man! any bets? will it be #49 or #200?

  23. CT Says:

haha ok, a base hit is nice too!

  24. SJ Mike Says:

They’re having a lot of fun today. I like it.

  25. CT Says:

TAGUCHI! it’s a shame he hasn’t hit like this all season.

  26. SJ Mike Says:

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Taguchi ends the game with a cycle?

  27. CT Says:

    i’d love it!

  28. Rob Cowie Says:

    Bases loaded walk

  29. Zack Says:

Marlins have the bases loaded, 1 out, on the Mets, check it out on TBS!!! Come on Fish!!! The announcer actually said, “Here comes Joe Smith to bail out the Mets…” HA HA HA HA HA…

  30. CT Says:

    2-0 Florida! Go Fish!

part of me hopes that both the brewers and mets tie up today and play again tomorrow. the more tired they both are, the better!

  31. SJ Mike Says:

Holy crap, we do get the Mets/Marlins game on TBS! I’ve been watching on GameDay!

  32. SJ Mike Says:

I am not looking forward to TBS announcers for the postseason.

  33. Chase Mutley Says:

I dunno CT, the Rockies were “tired” last year and mopped up the field with us. The high of winning a win-and-in playoff game has to give you some fierce motivation.

  34. CT Says:

Marlins and Mets are 2-2 now

  35. grrrumpy miner Says:

LIFE! Beltran Bomb! 2-2 Bot 6th.Go Cubs Go!

  36. Tim Malcolm Says:

Boy, it would be great for the C-team to get the sweep and the 92nd win. Who closes? Let’s go with Condrey — a save would be a really cool gift to a guy who has clearly out-pitched his “long-man” status this season.

  37. CT Says:

sure hope golson can get a hit here. or show some patience and get a walk.

  38. CT Says:

haha well his speed helped him get on base there!

  39. CT Says:

    NICE FIRST HOMER FOR MARSON!

  40. NEPA Says:

    Wow, Congrats to Marson.

  41. CT Says:

HAHAHAHA NICE STAIRS! THE HIT PARADE CONTINUES!

  42. grrrumpy miner Says:

GREEN WITH ENDY! Looks great so far. 2-2 Bot 7th.

  43. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Congratulations Lou! And Stairs! Hey-oh!

  44. CT Says:

    Taguchi’s a hitting monster today :-P

  45. Geoff Says:

what a great debut by lou marson

  46. Tim Malcolm Says:

Wow. If that ain’t a fine first impression on the city, I don’t know what is.

  47. NJ Says:

it’s amazing how some players respond when the fans don’t boo thier presence in the line-up…

  48. CT Says:

Milwaukee just tied it up, 1-1

  49. Tim Malcolm Says:

Mets and Brewers both tied in the seventh in very good games. Great stuff.

  50. CT Says:

is the crowd chanting “let’s go Marlins?” haha

  51. Eli Says:

    great job marson.

  52. Zack Says:

Wes Helms against Schowenweis, come on Wes, help us out here!!! The Phils are still paying you, remember that!

  53. CT Says:

    GREAT SEASON GUYS!!!

  54. CT Says:

    3-2 Florida!

  55. Chase Mutley Says:

    Home Run Wes Helms!!!

Makes up for all the times you didn’t come through in the clutch for the Phillies.

  56. Zack Says:

    Yeah!!! Wesssss! Yesssss!!!!!

  57. CT Says:

    Uggla homers! 4-2 Marlins!

  58. Rob Cowie Says:

    Uggla

  59. NEPA Says:

Wow, Mets bullpen blowing it again. Anyone that thinks that team can win a playoff series is crazy I think.

  60. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Milwaukee up 3-1. Wow.

  61. Chase Mutley Says:

Bring on the Brewers! Lets do this!

  62. CT Says:

i like our chances against the Brewers… let’s sweep em again!

  63. NJ Says:

ha well its all kicking off now. Great showing tonight from the Phillies B team

  64. Craig Says:

The Marlins will be WS winners in the next few years.

  65. Chase Mutley Says:

    Brewers win.

  66. Craig Says:

Brewers win. At worst there’s gonna be a decider tomorrow with the Mets.

  67. Craig Says:

I wonder if Johan and CC will be wheeled out tomorrow night?

  68. SJ Mike Says:

Delgado had the chance to make or break and he broke.

3 more outs and we face the Brew Crew.

  69. grrrumpy miner Says:

It ain’t over yet.I’m sticking with my Amazins.Til the bitter end.

  70. Craig Says:

Agent Helms hit a HR in the 8th

  71. AC in NJ Says:

    Where’s RivLez???? Where’s Mets Fan #1???

    Where are the trolls now??

  72. AC in NJ Says:

3 outs left grrrumpy miner. make your golf reservations now.

  73. Craig Says:

The Mets were 3 1/2 games up with 17 to go and the Phillies win the league by 3 games.

    :O)

  74. Craig Says:

Mets down to their final out….woooooooooo

  75. grrrumpy miner Says:

Welcome to the bitter end.No finger pointing today…….THATS Tomorrow. However its a day of mourning for me not only for this season that never was,but the last time we’ll ever see the old girl Shea Stadium.I hate the Fn Marlins.Shea will live forever.

  76. AC in NJ Says:

Miner – I hate the Mets!!! The next best thing to the Phils NL East Championship is watching the Mutts go home. Enjoy the winter.

  77. grrrumpy miner Says:

AC…….I spoke of class and courtesy in this room.I can see you actually have none.Good luck vs the Dodgers.

  78. Tim Malcolm Says:

Hey miner, just to put it out there, you’re the classiest of rival fans. Thanks for your continued readership and contributions. I hope you keep coming back.

  79. SJ Mike Says:

Miner, you and I have had good convos on here. Tim is right, you are one of the classier ones.

I’ll repeat a post I made on another thread for you.

I do sincerely feel sympathy for the Mets and Shea from the standpoint of how their stadium is ending. Similar to how we closed the Vet with the Eagles and Phils. Eagles losing that NFC Championship game the way they did to the Bucs and the Phils getting eliminated several days before the the ending of the Vet.

I know there are a lot who wouldn’t agree with me on that one.

  80. grrrumpy miner Says:

Tim and SJ….I will still lurk around here. during the winter and 2009.It comes as an honor,ESP from Tim to have read what I have read,Thanx.Plus SJ……Thanx for the condolonces and good words but don’t feel sorry,Mets didn’t deserve the playoffs….end of 2008 Mets, end of story.
