Gameday: Phillies (77-64) At Mets (79-62)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, September 07, 2008 12:25 PM
Headline: In game one, Phils must focus on the task
The Major Players: Jamie Moyer, Jimmy Rollins, Jayson Werth, Chad Durbin, Pedro Martinez, Fernando Tatis, David Wright, Brian Stokes
The Venue: Shea Stadium, Queens, N.Y.
The Number: 2 games behind (Mets)
In the biggest day of the season, the Phillies have two tussles with the Mets. First, it’s a Sunday matinee with Pedro Martinez, then it’s primetime on the national stage, Cole Hamels and Johan Santana. Two wins means a tie at the NL East leaderboard. Two losses means a heavy, heavy blow. A split? Not the end of the world.
Pay-Dro: This season the Phillies have hit Pedro Martinez well. In 10.1 innings the Phillies have 12 hits and seven runs off Martinez, but he has struck out 14 hitters.
Big Day Jamie: Jamie Moyer knows something about day games. He has pitched in 11 of them, for a 4.29 ERA.
Tattooed: Out of nowhere this year, Fernando Tatis has murdered the Phillies in 2008. The guy who has played 81 major league games between 2003 and 2008 is hitting .471 with two homers and six RBI against the stripes.
Dipped: This is the Phillies first doubleheader in 2008.
Lefty Loosey: Lefty lineup to open the doubleheader, with Matt Stairs in at left field and Greg Dobbs in at third base.
Phillies: Jamie Moyer (12-7) 3.80 ERA
Mets: Pedro Martinez (5-3) 5.07 ERA
Gametime: 2:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Werth/Dobbs/Stairs/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gameday beer: For game one of this epic two-game Sunday, you’ll want something that is light, refreshing and sunny. Go with St. Bernardus’ Witbier. A favorite Belgian brewery of mine, Bernardus makes some fine beers. And this is no exception. Laced with coriander and hops, this beer has a fruity aroma and taste without being a fruit. Be light for lunchtime — maybe cheddar or Jack cheese and crackers, something small.
Go Phillies!

PHILLIES SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
How original.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I hope they can pull out this first game, that’ll put all Phils fans at least a little more at ease for the primetime game.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Hmm-m, Tim, your selection of “major players” for this afternoon’s game leaves a lot to be desired. As this moment, the hitter the Phillies have the most concern with is the MVP candidate, Carlos Delgado. They also must keep Reyes off the basepaths. The key player for the Phillies is Utley who must take his play to another level.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
One of the nice by-products of a Phillies win is we don’t see Carlos or Mr. Met.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Tatis has hit Moyer very well this year, as has Wright. Of course the Phils need to watch Delgado and Reyes, too.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
I still think it would be better to throw Hamels in the first game. Winning the first game is crucial.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
But don’t the Phils hit better in night games? Lack of run production for Hamels this year has been a big problem, so I think it’s best to give him that advantage.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Let’s go EAGLES!
September 7th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
I like going for the jugular in the first game. Out the pressure on the Mets. If the Phils truly hit better at night then that would help a lesser quality pitcher.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
What will the players do between games? I figure they should have about 3 hours to kill, do they leave the park or stay there? I imagine Jimmy will take a little drive.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I would think they probably have something to eat then just kill some time by either watching TV or playing cards or something. But what do I know.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Jimmy will be out cruise’n the chicks.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Cruise’n the chicks and smokin’ the doobs.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Are you saying Jimmy has those dope smoking eyes?
September 7th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
In all seriousness, yes, I’ve noticed that for months now, he looks fairly stoned most games.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I think quite a few of the fellas enjoy the blunts. Ever check out Werth’s eyes? How about Victorino with the Maui Wowie?
September 7th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
I totally agree, and it’s a rather harmless habit, but don’t think I’d want to play ball on the Maui Wowie, but that’s just me.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Even Utley has the stoner eyes although that could be the oxycotins.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Oh yeah, Utley definitely has the stoner eyes, but I agree that it’s probably painkillers, especally the way he squints then opens them real wide, like “oh, am I up to bat now?”
September 7th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Is this first game on TV in Philly? I can’t find it!
September 7th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
What’s up with Moyer and the home plate ump?
September 7th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Ch 57
September 7th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
This sucks, this game was supposed to be on FOX and now I’m not able to see it. Thank god for tonight’s game at least.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
If you’re in the Philly area it’s on Ch 57.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Well, the hubbys a huge Rams fan, and they are losing to the Eagles 21-0 at half, so I’m going upstairs to watch the Phils. Besides, the air is getting very ripe down here. Check back when the football game is over(hopefully the TV will still be intact).
September 7th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
situational hitting by a classy, intelligent veteran player.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
That sac fly justifies his acquiring.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Phils 1-0
September 7th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Great job by Ruiz
September 7th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Usually I’m in PA, but I’m at school in CT. And I have MLB.tv but Met’s games are blacked out (even though we don’t get SNY).
September 7th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
1st time this dude rolls the lineup over all year. Good timing.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Pedro is vulnerable today.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
GIDP!!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Chooch, baby. Chooch.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
My channel 57 is Animal Planet??
September 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Most people must be watching the football game.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Great manufacturing of those 2 runs there. Eagles up 21-0 at halftime. Got 2 TVs running. It’s a happy lazy Sunday for me!
September 7th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
NFL = the worst.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
CW Philly Ch 57 – the actual channel would depend on your cable provider.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Ever since I lived overseas I’ve lost interest in the NFL.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Mike T, would you say the NFL is just not a good league?
September 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I love the NFL and college football. But I lose interest in college football pretty quickly once my team loses a game or 2 because there goes any shot at a BCS game. A 16 team playoff for college FB would be ridic.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Would T-Mac please put a cork in it.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
absolutely tim, the nfl and all of its marketing/media attachments are just filled with trash. i can’t stand this countries infatuation with it.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
i also can’t stand how fernando tatis is getting away using HGH.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Baseball is comprised, for the most part, of normal sized guys playing a game that most of us played in some form in our youth. Football on the other hand is comprised behemoths doing their best to inflict physical harm on their opponent. Baseball is an art – football is a collision.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I will say as a passionate Philadelphia sports fan I am a huge Eagles fan and am rooting and checking all day here. But, obviously, the Phils are always No. 1 in my heart.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Fred, that’s an extremely ignorant view of football. The work ethic and athleticism required in that sport is incredible. Watching an incredible football play unfold is art to me.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
And if you haven’t noticed, the last thing a lot of players on the field (RB’s, WR’s, QB’s etc.) want is physical pain or a collision.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Anyone with 3 brain cells knows that the baseball game is far more important today than the first of a 16 game schedule. However the phillies will be the 2nd fiddle on all sports coverage. This is a major part of the reason I am beginning to serioulsy hate the nfl.
September 7th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
The Mets should be nailing this guy… but never seem to be able to…
September 7th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Big, big pitches by Jamie. Way to do it.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
NEPA, just because my opinion of football is different from yours doesn’t make my opinion ignorant. I could easily say your opinion is ignorant, but I won’t. Personally, I just like baseball better – I can relate to it much better than football.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
That was a tough inning. He certainly worked out of that jam. Hats off to him…
September 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
By the way kids, big game going on at Shea.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
And a big two-bagger by the big man.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I don’t think PM is going to make it to the 6th
September 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Need to get this run in. I am concerned about Moyers pitch count.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Additionally, baseball players have been shown to have a much higher IQ than their counterparts in football.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Would be interesting to see the tv numbers, who is still watching a 28-0 football game with this game going on?
September 7th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Still need to get this run in
September 7th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Nice job by Moyer, I love how frustrating he is. And Fred, I also like baseball more than football, Phillies are my number one team by far. But just to call every football player a behemoth and to call the sport just one big collision is overlooking the skill involved, and clearly ignorant.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
This ain’t lookin good
September 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Now I’m done talking football.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Dobbs!!!!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
WOOOOOO! DOBBSIE!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
GAWD
September 7th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
This is going to be a long day
September 7th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Holy shit yes, Dobbs. I’m watching it one Gameday, can someone describe the HR.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Looked like a sac fly off the bat, but kept carrying
September 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
if that stays in play ruiz is on 3rd.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Chooch man! Yes!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
NEPA one of my good friends caught Steve Young’s first NFL touchdown pass so I am familiar with football and the players that comprise that sport. All I’m saying is I prefer baseball.
Great inning for the Phils. Let’s pour it on!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Fred, that’s far from the only thing you said in your first post, thats all I’m saying.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Hahahahaha!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I have to check my calendar… is this 2007????
September 7th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Nice, these are some really big hits.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Great inning! Let’s go phils
September 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
That was absolutely piss poor… It just goes to prove, the season ain’t over till its over… and I think it will be decided by the 4 game homestand against the Cubs during the last week…
September 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
What happened that was so funny?
September 7th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
rollins hit down lf line dropped between ss and lf
September 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
NEPA, Reyes and Evans had a massive brain fart and let a shallow popup drop from Rollins that allowed us to score our 6th run.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
A ball hit to shallow left…. nobody got too it
and for those that will read the posting here later…
Bottom of the 4th
Phillies 6 METS 0
(and they announcers said that the largest deficit the Mets have overcome this year is 3 runs
September 7th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
nice play ryan!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Shea stadium is a bandbox!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
thank you
September 7th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Gotta take the kids to a church picnic – drats! Guess I’ll be sitting in the Jeep listening to the game on the radio. Go Phils!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Jamie got out of that inning quickly!
September 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Have a good one Fred
September 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
god damn my team sucksz it moyer for crying out loudddd
September 7th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
See ya at the night game.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Willie Would have sent PM back out there for the 5….
September 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
as of right now this is a great day in philly sports
September 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
And let’s pray that doesn’t change.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
viva the crafty lefty
September 7th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
and Dobbs is killing the Mets all by himself
September 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Great day for sports watching in general – NFL opening day, Phillies double header, final round of Golf playoff tourney and I think a tennis major too. A little something something for everyone.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Wow, thoroughly impressed all around by the Phils so far.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
NEPA: and World Cup Qualifying matches, too. I think the USA played Cuba.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Yep, and we won 1-0 I believe.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Well… I hope the Phils waste it all this game… still, even taking 2 out of 3 is bad (for the Mets)
Top of 7
Phillies 6 Mets 0
September 7th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Jamie Moyer = unbelievable.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
I hate not being able to watch this game, Jamie Moyer on his game is an incredible thing to watch.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Myers, when on his game, strikes out guys and pitches his way through everything. Moyer, when on his game, locates, is very patient, and makes guys beat themselves. Both have been splendid in this series.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Jamie Moyer 7 two-hit shutout innings. Unreal. Ageless wonder. I hope he comes back. Winning the first two games is the only way I would throw Hamels, and now it may very well happen. Incredible.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Yea, when that Myers curve is biting, its a beautiful thing.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Pedro stank… The Met’s Offense is stuck on a Subway somewhere, and Moyer has been lights out… who’d a thought.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Whoo Hoo!
Bottom of the 8th
Phillies 6 Mets 1
Finally, on the board
September 7th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Well 0 runs through 16.2 innings is still very impressive.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
dammit Eyre! there goes the shutout
September 7th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Oh boy, shut this down quickly. We don’t want these Mets gaining much more hope.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
No lead is safe
September 7th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
get Eyre out of there now
September 7th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
YES.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Nice Pitches on Delgado…
September 7th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
i believe there was a So Tagbuchi sighting….saw him in the dugout
September 7th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
isn’t 6-0 in the 8th a perfect time to put Carrasco in there. let him throw to major league pitchers?
September 7th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
A guy with no 8th inning experience/bull pen experience in the biggest series of the year? No, I’m not for that at all.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Whew, I had a minor freak-out in the 8th.
September 7th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
OZ: Carlos Carrasco isn’t on the team.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Haha, oh and that too.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
YES!
September 7th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Sweeeeet!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Beautiful, what a win.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Awesome win! One more. Gotta deflate those Mets some more tonight!
September 7th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
my bad – i though Carrassco was one of the call-ups. Golson, Marson, Happ, and was there a 4th??
September 7th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
would’ve been nice to shut them out and demoralize them even more, but i’ll take it. great hitting by Ruiz and Dobbs today, and Moyer probably pitched one of his best games this season. Not sure who I’d nominate for the Ashburn… probably Moyer.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Dobbs hits were great, but I’d vote the first game Ashburn to Moyer. What’s the Phillies Nation policy for awards in double headers?
September 7th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
When I came back downstairs and checked in here, I said to my husband, “Wow , we have over 100 posts now”, he just shook his head and said “What a nerd”, but he still plays D & D at age 44, so I told him he’s a geek.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
CT, I’d say Moyer, because he held them in check. And also considering how he bounced back from his last start against the Mets when he got rocked.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Def Moyer for Ashburn.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
any West Coast folks on here? if yes, hoping we can connect, off this site, as have a few question (cost of living, etc.)
September 7th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Hey Phils fans, I know you hate us Mets fans on your blog. But, I just gotta say as much as I am disappointed and would love to be up 5 games right now, I have to tip my cap to the fightin Phils. Moyer and Myers both pitched brilliantly, and you clearly deserved to win both games and have shown so far this series that you are the better team. For how much I like what I see in Evans and Murphy, I wish the Mets had someone like Dobbs. I feel every time I see him play me jacks a crucial homerun. Even if the Mets lose tonight it isnt the end of the world, and it will hopefully just make for a more exciting final strecth. Should be a great pitching dual tonight
September 7th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Greg, it’s just the asshole Mets fans we don’t like , you’re OK.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Dobbs should have his picture in the dictionary next to the word clutch. He’s been coming up big all season from April to September. Dobbs for the Ashburn.
September 7th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
I have to say, lurking on MetsBlog today, I was cringing with embarrassment over the Phillies trolls who were posting there. I appreciate your posts, Greg. I wish there was more of the same for the rest of this season.
September 7th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Yeah, Joe, I cringed too. I read over there and there is this one poster named “chokeartistsmets” who is embarassing. I hate the jerks on both sides of the ball.
