Gameday: Phillies (87-68) At Marlins (81-73)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, September 21, 2008 03:15 PM

Headline: With series on line and playoff possibilities brimming, it’s Moyer’s turn
The Major Players: Jamie Moyer, Scott Eyre, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Chris Volstad, Mike Jacobs, Cody Ross
The Venue: Dolpin Stadium, Miami, Fla.
The Number: 0.5 games ahead NL East

In this topsy-turvy NL East race, the Phillies gained the upper hand Saturday night with a grind-out win over the Marlins. The Mets dropped one to the Braves, pushing the Phils back ahead. For the moment. As of this writing the Mets are beating the Braves, 4-2, behind Mike Pelfrey. Meanwhile in the Wild Card race, the Brewers are defeating the Reds, 6-1.

The Jake: Despite being a lefty, Mike Jacobs has encountered success against Jamie Moyer. He is hitting .273 with two home runs in 2008 against Moyer.

Regular At The Fishing Hole: But Moyer has performed well against Florida this season. He now has pitched 26 innings against the Fish, posting a 3.12 ERA and earning a decision each time out (3-1).

Plumbers? No. Men: The Frontrunner Bros. — Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins — are hitting .338 (47-for-139) with 11 HR, 36 RBI and 32 R in September.

Put The Fish Back: Say goodbye to the Marlins. The Phillies are currently 7-10 against their Floridian rivals in 2008.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (14-7) 3.86 ERA
Marlins: Chris Volstad (5-3) 3.07 ERA
Gametime: 4:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 85, isolated storms
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Dobbs/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gameday beer: We’re goin’ to the farmhouse. This is V-Saison from the Victory Brewing Co., a Pennsylvania favorite. I’m huge on farmhouse beers — brews that are bitter like pales, but have a real homegrown taste, usually a bit aged. This one is filled with hops. And you know how much I love my hops. Anyway, Moyer is a bit aged, so this makes sense to me. Grab a farmhouse, sit down with a roast beef sandwich, pop on the Phils and cheer your butt off.

Go Phillies!

    Very nice. That’s why he’s a pro. :)

  14. Manny Says:

And there goes Cody Ross’ error-free season…

  30. Scheity Says:

Oh no. We can’t lose Dobbs.

  31. CT Says:

we need some insurance runs here

  32. Kyle Says:

What happened with Dobbs? I am following on my computer.

  33. CT Says:

dove for a ball hit hard up the third baseline. looks like he hurt his ankle or knee but i’m not sure.

  34. CT Says:

    PETE HAPPY, YEAH!!!

  35. NEPA Says:

Didn’t see that HR coming. Huge.

  36. Harpo42 Says:

I missed what happened to Dobbs too (why do people call me when there is a game on?), but it seems like Feliz coming in was just meant to be.

  37. tcbphd Says:

Dobbs injured, eh? If anyone can update that’d be great. I’m on Gameday and all I see is “Injury delay” and then they never say what happened.

  38. Georgie Says:

And now, cue “Jaws” music, the dreaded 8th inning.

  39. tcbphd Says:

    Easy 8th? Wow!

  40. Georgie Says:

    What the hell was that?

  41. ataraxite Says:

Do you agree that Feliz dropped the ball on purpose?

  42. Georgie Says:

I was watching the “other” game and missed how that unfolded.

  43. CT Says:

    dammit, Lidge is wild again

  44. Harpo42 Says:

Oh, thank God. I can’t take this stress.

  45. CT Says:

WOOOOO! that was another nail biter. Lidge really knows how to keep it exciting.

  46. NEPA Says:

20 games over .500 since the last game of the 1993 season.

  47. Harpo42 Says:

Are they going to give us an update on Dobbs or what?

  48. Eli Says:

how many games til we clinch playoff spot

  49. Kyle Says:

    Any word on Dobbs?

  50. Tim Leary (the guru, not the met) Says:

Which won first? after the Phils win i changed the channel and saw the Eagles just won.

  51. R.Mac Says:

Phils win. Birds win. It’s a good day to be a Philly fan.

  52. Georgie Says:

It was really close, but the Phils won 1st I think.

  53. Richie Allen Says:

    magic # is 3

  54. Harpo42 Says:

Post show says they don’t know what happened to Dobbs and won’t know “until later”.

  55. Tyler Says:

Richie Allen, 3 for a spot in the playoffs…

  56. Dave Says:

Thank god thats it for the Marlins until April….

  57. Chris.I Says:

Hopefully Dobbs will be fine, but like I been telling everyone..The Mets are going to fold. Don’t be surprised if the Brew Crew wins the wild card. The Mets have a VERY tough schedule coming up, and the way their bullpens been playing, there in a wind full of trouble.

  58. mike m Says:

The people on this site if you think Werth is everyday player. He can’t hit right hand pitching.I worry the phillies will let Burrell go. And try a outfield of Werth,Victorino, jenkins and golson god forbid .

  59. Manny Says:

What’s the earliest date the Phillies could win the division?

  60. KM Says:

I am glad the Marlins are in the rear-view mirror.

I agree with you mike m. Werth is probably not an everyday player, but I think if he could get his average up to a respectable number against righties(maybe .255), and mash lefties, then he could be a decent everyday guy.

As far as Jenkins goes, they can not go into next season with him in the starting lineup. The need to get someone else in there, and fast.

I would like to see Golson get a shot to make the MLB club next year, but in no way would I start him. I would love to have him off the bench as a pinch runner, and an occasional spot starter. Our bench has basically no speed, and he would be an asset to the club.

  61. Matt Says:

If you’re looking to get tickets to an upcoming game, I’m saying Friday night is the night they clinch the division.

  62. GOOSEBUMPS Says:

    DO YOU HAVE ME YET?!?!

  63. Matt Says:

Anyone else watching the Yankees play their final game in Yankee Stadium tonight? I’m not a Yankees fan at all, but it’s a shame that it’s being closed. Corporate greed wins again! I wonder how long Fenway has?

  64. Bigbob Says:

A nailbiter, a great win, nearly ruined by Wheeler’s “color” commentary and his constant kissing up to the Fish. Everyone knows they can hit. Enough!

  65. NEPA Says:

Update from ESPN: “Dobbs said he’ll be available to play Monday” and Dobbs also said about his getting injured and Feliz coming in for a 2 run HR, “My timing was impeccable.”

  66. Phil Says:

    That is classy by Dobbs.

  67. Phil Says:

Is anyone else watching the last game at Yankees stadium ever?

  68. Matt Says:

Phil, I am.. even though I’m not a Yankees fan, I can appreciate their rich history. It’s a shame they are knocking this monument down just to add a few luxury boxes and obtain some PSL revenue.

  69. Rob Cowie Says:

I know brian is there, lucky bastard.

  70. NEPA Says:

I’m switching back and forth between that and the football game. I’d be watching the baseball game more if either of these 2 teams had a playoff chance left. Shame they didn’t have Boston @ New York for the final series of the year.
