Gamenight: Braves (69-88) At Phillies (89-68)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, September 23, 2008 06:00 PM
Headline: King Cole attempts to push the Phils closer to the promised land
The Major Players: Cole Hamels, JC Romero, Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins, Mike Hampton, Brian McCann
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa.
The Number: 2.5 games ahead NL East
There are five games to go in the 2008 season, and the Phillies can pull very, very close to a playoff spot with a win tonight. Cole Hamels toes the rubber; the staff ace pitched just six innings last time out against the Braves, but is above the 220-inning level, a clear career high.
Variety Of Coles: Hamels has run the gamut against the Braves this season. His first start against them with his first career complete-game shutout. Then he was one out from the same deed his second time out. Later that month (July 26) he had his shortest start of the year against Atlanta. Then he had his six-inning win against the Braves last week. Altogether he has a 2.30 ERA and a 3-0 record against the Braves.
Lonely Lou: Lou Marson is the only rostered position player without a plate appearance.
Good Company: Chase Utley — after recording his 100th RBI last night — is one of just three second basemen to acheive such a feat four years in a row. The other two — Jeff Kent and Charlie Gehringer.
Cann Cann: Brian McCann is hitting .400 against Cole Hamels this season, and .421 for his career (19 at bats).
Ninety: With a win tonight, the Phillies would hit the 90-win mark for just the 12th time in franchise history.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (14-9) 3.10 ERA
Braves: Mike Hampton (2-3) 5.05 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 65, sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gamenight beer: Flying Dog presents Dogtoberfest, a caramel-flavored, intense journey into October. It’s not bad. I’d go with a couple others before this one, but it’s a good solo sipper. Which is what you want tonight — something to sit and enjoy as you watch the best at his craft go to work. Big start for the ace. Eat some beef ravioli with it.
Go Phillies!

For my fantasy team,I hope Hamels pitches the game of his life….however Johan, thats on the mound vs a team that can go 0 and 6 and have nothing to lose may spell success vs the Amazins.I do hope the Cubs bring their A game this week so we can see once and for all if the Mets deserve to go to the playoffs.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Oh…and by the way,LETS GO PIRATES!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:15 pm
no Aramis Ramirez or Soto for the Cubs tonight. They have to do what’s best for them, can’t get mad at them.
Let’s go Hamels!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Bad move Lou…..bring your A game vs the Mets….anything less eventho it may be a win for the Amazins,it will feel like a hollow victory to me.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Cubs have no motivations to win games against the Mets. If I were the Cubs, I’d want the Mets in the Wild Card to play them in the first round. Their bullpen is horrendous.
On an unrelated note, can someone please post a blog entry about sitting in a seat, or close to a seat, where you have the ability to catch a fair/foul ball that is close to being “in play”? I have seen on too many occasions recently at CBP “fans” acting like Steve Bartman going out of their way to catch opposing foul balls and home run balls that are “on the fence”. Leave them alone! Don’t reach over for them. Heck, try to make them appear to never leave the park by subtly batting them down. Give your team any advantage possible, especially this time of year.
….Especially if you are just going to throw it back into the park!

BREAKING NEWS: Minaya gets 4 year extension
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm
He’s leaving everything up
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm
a nicely place bloop
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Cmon Hamels! Whats wrong
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:11 pm
ok, could’ve been worse. He did throw a lot of pitches though.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:19 pm
wouldn’t the cubs play the nl west winner first round since they have a worse record than whoever wins the wild card
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:20 pm
The wild card is automatically the “4th” seed and will play the top division winner unless their in the same division, then they play the “second” best division winner
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:21 pm
“they’re” instead of “their” in that post. Bad grammar still haunts me
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:27 pm
1-0 Cubs
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 pm
damn it shane
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 pm
yeah Pete!
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Big 2 out hit there by Pete.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:39 pm
PETE HAPPY!
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 pm
That’s why I’d like to see the brewers win the wildcard
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:44 pm
i don’t care, if he took more ground balls that wouldn’t happen. saying that was a bad bounce is nonsense – he missed it by at least 3 feet. all infield hoppers have top spin, that’s why there hopping around in the infield.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Jesus, Cole is not ON tonight
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Okay, is anyone else concerned that Cole has 60 pitches by the third inning? Looks like he’s cooked.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
geoff said hamels wasn’t a big game pitcher a few times this year.
boy is he ever right.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Hamels just isn’t good with pick offs it seems.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Oh man, I thought he had that, WTF hamels
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I’m getting this negative vibe from Hamels today
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Damn the Wilpons thinking with their hearts and not their brains!Signing Minaya just gave him the green light to walk around without a clue and sit with his thumb up his ass.Unless Minaya can TOTALLY revamp the pen, build a solid bench, and bring in a couple of #2 starters, than maybe i’d reconsider.Until that day,the Wilpon’s have disappointed me as a fan.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Utley’s pretty much back to his old self…. Good timing!
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Hamels gets too emotional. If something doesn’t go his way he shows it. Hitters seem to be able to catch those vibes and take advantage of a rattled pitcher, whether it be anger or upset.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Kelly Johnson is a truly horrific fielder, or does he only do this vs. the Phils?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Howard has been conisderably better as of late at not chasing pitches. He’s generally only swinging and missing now when a pitcher blows it by him now.
Big opportunity for Pat to step up here.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Come on Pat, gotta make them pay for that mistake.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Anbody hearing the random Mets fans chanting “Let’s Go Mets” at the game?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Devil wears Prado
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
2 runs in 3 innings? Nothing to panic about. If it were 8-0 Atlanta after 2,than i’d worry.Hamels will settle down, relax.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Does anyone else think the food in Harry the K’s is pretty bad? I’ve been there twice and disliked the food both times.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Never ate at Harry The Ks. I usually get just a basic hot dog at games, although got a big kibassi at Bull’s BBQ and it was great.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:12 pm
1-2-3 for cole, maybe he’s found his rythmn
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:13 pm
However, I have avoided the Schmidter….my friend got it one time and did not feel too well after that….
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:15 pm
What’s a kibassi?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Haha, I think kielbasa.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Bulls has the best food in the Stadium. Never any line there either like there is at the overrate steak joints in the outfield.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:17 pm
hahahahahahaha thanks NEPA
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Sorry, spelled it wrong. Kielbasi (or sometimes spelled kielbasa). Sausage.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Wow, anyone just see Santana’s ridiculous broken bat single? The ball rolls into the bat right in front of second base and takes a hop off it to make sure he’s safe at first. That’s like some kinda double hit.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Wonder if Minaya’s extension includes those extra years no-one would be prepared to pay… Those Mets sure do like to tie their hands with bad deals.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:25 pm
WRIGHT ONNNNNNNNNNNNN!
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Hamels finally settled in… Now it’s time to get those runs in!
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Pirates up 3-2.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Kotchman really has Cole’s number
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Pat the Bat!
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Here we go.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Gah, bunt in that situation, get that tying run and don’t be greedy!
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I get the feeling like these guys are playing at half speed/half mind. You haven’t clinched jack shit yet, Fightins.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:57 pm
I don’t get that vibe at all. I think that’s all in your head because they’re struggling.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
NEPA:
Burrell with a mental mistake. Cole throwing it past third early on. Lack of timely hits by a fairly good hitting team. It’s not indicative of them as a whole, but they just don’t seem to have the fire right now. Perhaps Hampton’s performance flustered them. I look forward to the relievers, sort of how you want to get past Santana and to the parade of horrors.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Maybe it’s me, but I don’t really feel the intesity or fire coming from this game. Maybe it’ll change if we can get a run and get back into it.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Hahaha, did anyone else just see that kid blatantly stick his middle finger in the camera as it went through the crowd?
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Dang. Missed it.
Santana is approaching 120. I guess that’s one way to avoid using the putrid ‘pen.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Dame this offense needs to come to life we haven’t clinch a playoff spot yet and this Braves pitching sucks it’s time to score some runs.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
This appears to be another no-support-for-Hamels game. Come on, guys. Get a pair. And score a pair.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Just have to get Victorino on base….or get someone on base and put Golson in.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
time for some clutch hitting, milwaukees losing
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Vic getting on base here is huge. I don’t like our chances with 1 out nobody on with Feliz and Ruiz due up.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:42 pm
pinch hit for ruiz
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Coste already pinch hit, so the only catcher available is Marson who has yet to see action this season.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
greg golson
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
This Gonzalez is a real character. He’s flopping around out there. Here comes Golson.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
hey the story behind this wierd windup up is when he was rehabbing he was so bored that he started to use that motion.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
classic
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
oh well, bad night. Let’s get them tomorrow.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Can’t win them all. We’re still fine, a Brewers loss would be very nice.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Come back tomorrow and get on Jo-Jo Reyes tomorrow.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
the difference between the Mets game and the Phillies game tonight: Burrell bases loaded: fouls out, Reyes bases loaded: triples.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
That sucks
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Cole Hamels is so inconsistent, and over-rated…He is nowhere near our #1 guy. He’s more like our 3rd.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
This loss sucks because the offense couldn’t hit Mike Hampton who sucks and it was a 1 run game which the Braves have the worst record in,but o’well i hope Myers can rebound from his last start and the offense can bring it to Jo-Jo Reyes.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
That does suck.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Apparently Zambrano is throwing tomorrow for the Cubbies.
Zambrano vs. Perez
us is Myers vs. Reyes
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
It will be interesting to see if Myers can rebound after the worst start of his career and the first bad start since coming up from the minors.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Well Gagne is in for the Brewers. Hopefully the Pirates can score at least 47 runs off him.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Is there anyway to seperate Ruiz’s defense and insert it into Costes’ body?
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
don’t be silly, NEPA. Gagne will hold them to 37 runs.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Would be very nice to see a Brewers loss.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I still think Cholly should of just used a pinch hitter for Ruiz and if we had to go to extras just let Marson catch.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:03 pm
We have to go one at a time ..we’ll get them tomorrow.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Phillies literally took the night off tonight, especially Burrell and Hamels.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Cole’s a solid starter, but he sure does seem to get outpitched a lot for an “ace.”
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Can’t hang our heads. Just got to brush it off and come back to play tomorrow. That’s really all it comes down to. Still 1.5 games up and still in control. Can’t let this loss drag you down too much.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Cole pitched 7 innings, 2 ER. He didn’t have his best stuff but he battled. The offense scored 2 runs off of the terrible Braves, tonight was the offense’s fault.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Well Griffin, that’s being unfair with Burrell. He did get an RBI double to score 1 of our 2 runs!
This is a tough loss, especially because it’s coupled with a Mets win and our lead doesn’t seem as solid as I thought. Out of all games remaining, I thought this one was the most likely win, with Hamels on the mound and the offense having a hot September. But Hamels was good (not great) in his last (?) start of the season, and the offense never showed up big. Utley, Pat, Howard were good, but Rollins, Vic, Werth were very bad.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Cole didn’t pitch a bad game he gave us 7 solid innings and kept us in the game, the offense just took the night off because i know we can hit Hampton better then we did.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:18 pm
brewers have 1st and 3rd one out. not good.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Haha, this is awful trying to be a Pirates fan for even a few nights.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
and thats why, brew crew 4-3
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
well, Brewers took the lead, bad day all around.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Brew Crew took the lead 4-3.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I agree that the offense was partly to blame tonight but in close games like this one tonight where the offense is having trouble getting the big hits, you depend on your pitcher to keep the other team from scoring so as to keep the game close, not throw the ball past the third baseman thereby giving up an unearned run.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Cole hamels is a johan wannabe. He just can’t touch johan, much the same way aaron burr couldn’t touch alexander hamilton
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Pirates 5-4!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Guillermo Mota (’06 Met) to the rescue!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:36 pm
I meant Mota was an ‘07 Met, so he’s a choker.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
damn Jason Kendall
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Cole litteraly threw away the game when he over threw the pickoff to Feliz…I mean, he had him by a mile! Being a solid pitcher, or an ”Ace” you have to consistent, and patient (and cole is neither). How can he be considered our ace, when his last few outings, in which we needed him the most, he falls to shit? I’m not saying he’s a bad pitcher, but he’s not our ace. The guy is highly (points to the sky) over-rated.
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Chris: Cole is VERY consistent…look at his stats throughout the season.
Impatient, yes. VERY. He gets easily frustrated and needs to work on that.
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Lets remeber he doesn’t pitch in a major league baseball stadium. Citizens bank ballpark is a little league park. Its so easy to get a HR
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
He’s only consistent when we don’t need him to be. Look at last season too. He NEVER plays to his capability when its needed.
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Chris, he had a huge start right around this time of the season last year. Do some research.
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Here’s the rotations for the next couple days. What do you think?
Wednesday
Phils: Brett Myers vs. Jo-Jo Reyes
Mets: Oliver Perez vs. Carlos Zambrano
Thursday
Phils: Off
Mets: Pedro Martinez vs. Rich Harden
Friday
Phils: Jamie Moyer vs. John Lannan
Mets: Mike Pelfry vs. Chris Volstad
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:57 pm
I’m a big fan of Cole. I don’t understand how so many of you can be so against him. For the most part, he is quite good at shutting down an opposing team’s offense. If you tell a team your starter will go 7 innings, and give up 2 ER, they will gladly take it. Hamels consistently goes deep into games for this team, but when he pitches, he gets very little run support. The team had scored 11 runs in their previous 2 games, and to only manage 2 runs against Hampton is sad for how potent this lineup Should be. They can score runs at will, then on nights when Cole pitches, they forget how to swing the bats.
Maybe Cole should give up 5, 6, or 7 runs in a game. The offense seems to be able keep up when pitchers give up that amount.
To Sum Up: The offense consistently does nothing for run support when Hamels is on the mound. He does his job at keeping the opponent to maybe 2 or 3 runs, and keeping the Phillies there to win it, the offense just doesn’t come through for him.
September 24th, 2008 at 12:36 am
That’s true, Toos. (Supposed to be Tools? Or is there a play on words here?)
Anyway, we forget that he did only allow 3 runs. That really ain’t too bad for anybody.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:21 am
One phrase to sum up Cole Hamels this year: “Run Support” (or actually lack thereof)
