Gamenight: Marlins (72-71) At Phillies (78-65)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, September 08, 2008 06:08 PM
Headline: Phils hit home stretch needing wins
The Major Players: Joe Blanton, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Anibal Sanchez, Mike Jacobs, Hanley Ramirez
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa..
The Number: 2 games behind (Mets)
A successful (but not completely satisfying?) 2-of-3 from the Mets at Shea brings the Phillies to the final batch of games, starting with a crucial three-gamer at home against the Marlins. For the Phils, they could make up some ground. For the Fish, the season could be over after this week. It’s up to the Phils to vanquish the kids from Dade County.
Ani-Ball: Sanchez faced the Phils on Aug. 6, giving up three earned runs in five innings. He lost that game.
The 40 Club: Ryan Howard hit a home run off Sanchez in that win. He has 40 home runs for the third-consecutive season, the first Phillie to ever do such a thing.
Up The Stairs: Matt Stairs spells Pat Burrell again tonight. Burrell is mired in a secon-half slump, and is the worst hitter in baseball since Aug. 7.
Phillies: Joe Blanton (6-12) 4.79 ERA
Marlins: Anibal Sanchez (2-3) 5.54 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Werth/Dobbs/Stairs/Ruiz/Blanton

Your gamenight beer: Who wants a good IPA? You do? Then pick up Smuttynose IPA, or “Finest Kind.” A hell of a drink, it’ll have you hoppin’ all over Philly tonight. Hopefully the Phils have some hop in their step for this big tilt.
Go Phillies!

Big series. We need to start winning these games. 13 at home, 6 on the road. Let’s win this one –one game at a time
September 8th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
With the Mets idle, we HAVE to win this game.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
No need to even say big series – they’re all huge from here on out.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
If Jimmy can do that a lot in the last 19 games, I think we’ll be pretty successful. That is, of course, if our power hitters don’t go into huge funks.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Everyone needs to play smart. Work the counts, make the routine plays, move the runner, hit the cutoff… One play at a time.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
So far, so good.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Blanton scares the piss outta me.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I see Geoff coming on soon: “Get Blanton out right now. He’s not on his game tonight, so get him out of there before he causes too much damage.”
September 8th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Blanton is a contact pitcher. For whatever reason, he’s been walking batters like crazy lately and this is why he has been poor.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Get Blanton out right now. He’s not on his game tonight, so get him out of there before he causes too much damage.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Come on Blanton. For Christsakes, just because the offense spotted you, it doesn’t mean you have to give it back.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Geoff, was I pretty close with my prediction?
September 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Brain fart by Howard.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Recently Blanton and for that matter Kendrick just haven’t been strikes. They’ve been walking too many batters and not getting batters out when men are on base.
Blanton was supposed to be an “innings eater” but hasn’t gone very far in games recently. He did do well in August for the Phillies though.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
What the hell Howard.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
all those nice plays by howard lately….. erased. what a horrible play. idiot.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
i just turned it on, someoen please explain what he did. i saw him upset
September 8th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
guy on third and first, one out, groundball to howard, runs the batter down to tag, doesn’t throw home.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
run scores.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Runner on third breaking for home on a soft ground ball. Howard had a dead play at the plate, but he was charging the batter running up the line slowly and decided to tag him instead of throwing home.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
At least they’re jumping on Sanchez.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
The two pudgy guys get it done! Nice! Well, three pudgy guys if you count Blanton.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I hate blanton nothing personal its just he stinks and people really bought into the hype. That he didn’t get run support bull shit he stinks cheap bastard owners.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
thanks for the explanation. and lol mikemike
September 8th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Great AB by Utley – we’ll see if K-How can get something done here vs. a lefty.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
There’s always a reason most of these teams give up players like Blanton. And it’s not because they’re good.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Okay, it’s nice that Sanchez is out of the game and all, but the offense needs to keep going. I’m tired of seeing them get shut out by bullpens after the starters are lifted.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Well, Jamie, not bad basehit then for Howard to get another run there.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Could Kalas have been any less excited? I’m not sure if he was confused or thinking of his next nap, but he seemed like he couldn’t care less.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Kalas doesn’t usually get into it until 7th inning on.
Though I did get a kick out of hearing Wheeler going through the entire Florida infield to figure out which cutoff man was missed when Blanton hit the sac fly.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Haha, he did mention Uggla, Jacobs and “the first basemen” Cantu.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Yup, time for big Joe to give some runs back.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I like seeing the 2007 Phillies back, at least for this game. Getting a bunch of hits, good to see that, especially coming from Utley, Howard, Jimmy
September 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Wow, Blanton.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Okay, I’ll say it Geoff. Time to get Blanton out of here.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Blanton is NOT a playoff pitcher…I don’t know what we’re gonna do if we make it. Kendrick better get his A game back.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Low/inside fastball to Jacobs? Really, he’d be hard pressed to find a worse pitch/spot to throw the ball.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Blanton sucks. He has to know that Jacobs is a low ball hitter. WTF was that pitch. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those 20 runs total game.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
If we make it to the playoffs, I’d like to see them just go to a 3 man rotation – Hamels, Myers, and Moyer. The off-day in between games will have them pitching on 4 days rest, most likely.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
actually Jacobs likes to pull the outside pitch. classic low ball lefty.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
but yeah Blanton sucks
September 8th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
pitchers duel tonight.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Sidenote: I can’t believe that ADAM EATON makes more money that Rollins and Utley
September 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Blanton=garbage.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I wouldn’t say garbage, J-Man. He’s been decent with the Phillies so far. We would definitely be worse off with Eaton. But I do think that we needed to bring a really good pitcher to boost our rotation, not a Blanton-type guy.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Manny-Everybodys better than Eaton, but yea they need to stop getting the “B-list” players like Blanton and get someone better Blanton not a pitcher thats gonna pitch you to the playoffs.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
We agree. I’m just pointing out that “B-list” is NOT = garbage
September 8th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Is that Joe Blanton in the batter’s box?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
if blanton had a good pithcing coach hed be a serviceable 4th guy. but we have like a bunch of number 5’s. a number 2, and a number 1 that acts like a number 2 because hes a whacko
September 8th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
and a terrible pitching coach.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
a terrible pitching coach who has the Phils at 3rd best team ERA in the National League or 5th overall in the majors. Yeah, Geoff, he’s terrible.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
jamie, you are so clueless it’s unbelievably annoying.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Mike, you are such a dipshit you are annoying. How am I clueless? Please enlighten me with your brilliance, because I’m relying on actual statistics.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
I’m with Jamie on this one
September 8th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
before we discuss stats, please describe your deep relationship with rich dubee and the starting pitchers of the phillies. how many times have you sat down with them and discussed the influence of dubee? do you frequent the clubhouse? press pass? something?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Thanks Manny. It’s nice to know at least one other intelligent person is blogging tonight. By the way, love the dreds. You shouldn’t have had to trim them.
On a serious note, I don’t agree with everything Cholly, Dubee, or the front office does, but there’s a reason they’re getting paid to do their jobs are we’re not. Some people apparently don’t realize that – they think everyone else’s jobs are easy. However, there are times that I want to punch them right in the faces for some of their decisions, I must admit.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Non-troll Mets fan, why do you guys hate your pitching coach so much?
From the inside looking in, my view says you should be loving your pitching coach and hating your hitting coach. I think you guys don’t have the pitching talent to have the 5th best team ERA in baseball and your hitters are too good to NOT be a top 5 team offensively. Had you told me you guys would have a better team ERA and we would have more R/G before the season I would have slapped you.

Check this out Mike
September 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Mike, same questions could be posed to you. Neither of us have intimate knowledge of anything inside that clubhouse. We just like to think we do.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Our hitting is among the worst in the Majors. GPR is right in saying that we should be pissed at our hitting coach, who as a matter of fact, I don’t know who he is.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Time to go for a run. Be back in about an hour to continue this “Rich Dubee is shit” discussion.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Milt Thompson is the hitting coach.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Nice DP!
September 8th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Great DP there. They better hang on to this game.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
rich dubee sucks..
September 8th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
How much chaw does Jacobs have in his mouth? Dear lord.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
You know you’re going to make me cry.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Phillies’ bat cooled off… we need to hit the Marlins’ bullpen good for this series… especially when their starting pitcher didn’t even finish the 2nd inning!
September 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
I’m in the area but I have no clue where I’ll find the game to listen to. What radio station (AM or FM…I’m too cheap to have satellite) is it broadcast on? I need the frequency, too… don’t tell me WXYZ because I have no clue where that s on the dial. Thanks!
September 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
what is eric bruntlett doing out there?
September 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
1210 AM
September 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Prediction: Hanley HR off Durbin right here.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Missed it NEPA
September 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Well I was about 30 feet off, thank god.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Thanks, SJ. My cheapass radio won’t pick it up… Oh well.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Hey Geoff- this is my first time back on since last night. I see you’ve been at it all day. Can you say LOSER? Dude, get a life. Also, “chief,” where do you get off with political comments? That was out of left field. Honestly, what the hell was that? Your social skills stuggling? You’re pathetic. You can’t even come up with a real comeback. You know why? Because you sit in front of your computer all day blogging about the Phillies. What’s wrong, too fat to get a girl? Too stupid to get a real job? Too lazy to work out? Here’s a prediction- the Phillies will come close and miss the playoffs and you will be searching for someone to write to. Nice life. If only Chase Utley had tits, you would be jacking off and writing less.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Ya done Kevin? Good, get the hell out.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
An insurance run or 2 would be nice. The 8th inning scares me lately.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
This guy throws hard. Wow.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Wow, Werth. What a stroke!
September 8th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Holy shit, Wacko.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
wow, werth unloaded on that ball. that’s the most locked in i’ve seen him on a ball all season.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
And again, Kalas, not even a hint of excitement in his voice. Whats the deal?
September 8th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
WERTH!!
September 8th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
It does sound like Kalas is calling the game like anything is at stake.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Sorry, meant to say that Kalas sounds like he’s calling it like there isn’t anything at stake. Typo.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
mets have a really easy schedule cept for a 4 game series against cubs
September 8th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
I’d much rather have Madson in there right now. Throw strikes, make them hit you. Romero’s control is so bad.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
What is it with the 8th inning?
September 8th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Man Werth give us a 4 run lead and Romero has to give up more runs?Man the 8th inning has killed us anymore.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
just get someone out pelast. get to lidge.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Their brining in Scott Erye? Were done.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
nice eyre.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
The story ends with me putting the 3 phillie advertisers into the wall
September 8th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
J-Man where have you been? Eyre’s been great for us.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Jesus H Christ everytime i think its safe t go back I see myself on the tv. All year long
September 8th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Reds blow no help from them tonight
September 8th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
J-Man…the 8th inning had been the reason were behind the freakin mets…but I think were ok now…get to Lidge
September 8th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Romero should face RHB as least often as possible.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
I wish someone would torture that Warren Wallace dude
September 8th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Ok Brad….do your stuff ….signing off….just win…dont need any other commentary.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Come on Lidge nows not a good time to have your 1st blown save.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
nice. lidge is awesome.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Oh wow, thank God! Never easy, is it?
September 8th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Good job Lidge.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
YES! Thank god.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Tell the Mets we’re not going away.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
I think we need to start calling him Brad “Cardiac Arrest” Lidge.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Lidge is now 35/35
September 8th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Came back to say one thing ..
JRoll is the player of the game, has been playing good offense, good defense tonight, but…
was the crowd booing JRoll when he bobbled the ball in the 9th?….if so.
I think its a bad omen….
HOW COULD THEY BOO THIS GUY NOW?
I think the fans suck..
September 8th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I think they were more or less booing the call at third, which had the tying run on base with 1 out.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
they were either booing feliz being out of position or the call not j roll
September 8th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
WPHT gave the Star of the Game award to Ryan Howard.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Lidge works best under pressure, no doubt
September 8th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Comcast gave it to J-Roll
September 8th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Seems like when there’s no pressure on Lidge, he tries painting corners and throwing junk, but when he’s under pressure, he just goes right after and attacks hitters.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
I’d agree with that, SJ Mike. A fair assesment of Lidge. Nice observation
September 8th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
YEA REDS HAVE TAKEN THE LEAD. 5-4 vs Brewers!!
September 8th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Brewers lost! Good day yall
September 8th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
wow awesome, they won. Thanks for that update manny. would’ve given up!
September 8th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
3 Runs in the 9th inning? Man, The Brew Crew have massive bullpen problems.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Yea, that bullpen is really bad. We have to take it to them big time.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Good to see the Phillies get offensive!
September 8th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
I’ve always found the Phillies offensive.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Hardy har har.
September 9th, 2008 at 2:49 am
[...] Florida tied the game in the 2nd inning as Blanton struggled with his control walking the first 2 hitters. Josh Willingham singled to load the bases. Baker’s sacrifice fly to centerfield scored 1 run and Alfredo Amezaga’s slow ground out to first base pushed the 2nd run across. Howard opted to chase down Amezaga who was not hustling to 1st base, rather than fielding the ball and throwing home thus saving a run. Howard’s move caused a bit of controversy in blogosphere. [...]
