Gamenight: Nationals (59-99) At Phillies (89-70)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, September 26, 2008 06:15 PM
Headline: With a win, postseason in reach
The Major Players: Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Joe Blanton, Shane Victorino, JC Romero
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa.
The Number: 1 game ahead, NL East
Joe Blanton takes the hill. The Phillies are a game up with three to play. The Mets get the Marlins (SNY), while the Brewers play the Cubs (ESPN).
After dropping two games to the Braves, the Phillies find themselves still in first place, but with very little breathinr room. In fact, the space between them and the Mets is dangerously tight. Tonight the Nationals are in for the final three games, and just like last year, it’ll take two-of-three to get the job done.
The good guys will face Collin Balester, who has had spotty success against the Phils. He has allowed five earned runs in 13 innings against the good guys, striking out nine while walking just one. He will walk a couple batters per game, so the Phils need to be more patient against the 22-year-old right-hander.
The offense was miserable in the final two Atlanta games. They scored just four runs against Mike Hampton and Jo-Jo Reyes, among others. They seemed to press a little more, sensing the magnitude of their close accomplishments. Now is not the time to press. If they play light, smart ball as they did Friday, the big hits will come and they’ll win. Looking at last year’s triumph, this team seems to seize the moment when they need to.
Two hitters who could carry the mantle against Balester: Chase Utley (HR in six at bats) and Shane Victorino (3-for-6).
If the Phillies win, it’s win No. 90. If the Nats lose, it’s loss No. 100. We’d like both things to happen tonight.
Phillies: Joe Blanton (8-12) 4.79 ERA
Nationals: Collin Balester (3-6) 4.83 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 66, rain
Lineup: Rollins/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Dobbs/Ruiz/Blanton

Your gamenight beer: So for the final three games, we’re coming back, full-circle, and presenting the big three favorites from the Yuengling Brewery. It’s been a long, strange journey with beer this season, but it’s always nice to come back to a familiar sight. So here’s Yuengling Porter. In honor of Blanton, our own porter of a baseball player, we hand this out with a helping of beef stew. If you’re not at the park, enjoy this slow and root, root, root for your Philadelphia Phillies.
Go Phillies!

Let’s go Phils, come on Fat Joe!
September 26th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
This is a must-win in my opinion to keep up with the momentum the Muts are generating…..Yuengling Porter is God awful btw….
Go Phils
September 26th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Time to get the job done right now, don’t give the mets a chance….just sweep
September 26th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Is there any beer that someone who doesn’t like beer might like?
September 26th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
red wine!
September 26th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Griffin-lol-I thought that might be the case.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Georgie – possibly Blue Moon, or a good fruit beer. I like UFO Raspberry.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
yeah, my wife likes Blue Moon with a lemon. I guess it’s a wheat beer. I’m not sure I’m describing it well, but it’s definitely a different taste than traditional beers.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Now, NEPA, does that still taste like beer though?
September 26th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Yea it still tastes like beer, but there’s like the perfect balance of beer and fruit taste. People who aren’t big beer drinkers usually love a Blue Moon w/ an orange slice. That might be your best bet.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
I’ve just never tasted a beer that wasn’t bitter, although some dark beers seemed to have less of an aftertaste to me.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Is this going to start on time?
September 26th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
When I get nervous I tend to chatter, drives my husband nuts, so now you guys get to hear it instead-hahaha. Unless Rob starts deleting me!
September 26th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
is it raining in Philly? No rain in NY yet.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Woo boy, got butterflies galore…..excited and nervous all at the same time.
September 26th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Heh. My favorite of all time is UFO Raspberry.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Zimmerman, Flores, Belliard, and Kearns out for the Nationals. So that’s 4 regulars missing.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
ok, let’s do this.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
I LOVE anything raspberry, so maybe I’ll give it a try. Although then I’ll chatter even more.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Tim: Probably my favorite as well.
This Nats lineup is so bad. We better take care of them tonight. It feels like months since we just blew someone out.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Tim: How is the Blueberry UFO? I was thinking about picking that up next week.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Excellent first inning by Blanton.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Great start for Blanton. let’s knock in some runs quick and build some momentum
September 26th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
1-0 marlins!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Holy crap, that was a quick first run. Ramirez singles on first pitch and steals right away.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
OK phils
September 26th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
How good does it feel not to have to play the Marlins again this season? That teams scares the shit outta me. You take your eye off the TV for a minute and they hit like 6 HR’s.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Don’t know of a blueberry UFO.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Marlins are a team that is pesky offensively where the Nats are pesky pitching and defensively. So yeah, Nepa, I am very thankful that we don’t have to see the Marlins again.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
The Fish have really jumped on the Mets right off the bat and glad it’s off Pelfrey.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
OH YEAH!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
2-0 marlins
September 26th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Come on, big man. Drive this run in.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Uggla
September 26th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
YES!!!!!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
OH YES HOWARD!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
YESS, the big man
September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
yeah Howard!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Sweeeet!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Ok howard
September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Keep at ‘em guys!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
mvp
September 26th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Big Man to lead things off. Nice!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Haha, now I’m thinking they don’t make Blueberry UFO. I just tried looking it up and couldn’t find anything on it. I’m not sure what I saw then, it was from Harpoon and it was right next to the Raspberry.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Wow, great first inning. Need to keep this momentum!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Don’t know if it’s been spoken of yet but didn’t we win the division last year at CBP against the Nats on the second to last night?
September 26th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
No worries. But yeah, I’ll drink rasp UFO every day anytime. Big knock by the big man. Absolutely huge. What a September.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Howard is God
September 26th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
We beat the Nats on the last day of the season last year to win the division. And the Marlins pounded Tom Glavine for like 7 first inning runs.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
The weather looked OK via the ESPN update – what’s it look like for those of you in Philly?
September 26th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Is it sort of misting there or is that just fog?
September 26th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
It’s foggy, misty, and windy.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Memory was escaping me there and couldn’t remember if it was the second to or last night. Would have been a lovely co-incidence if it had of been and the Mets loose tonight setting up a win and it’s the division tomorrow night…
September 26th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
2-0 Fish
September 26th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
The fans are very pumped up, weather doesn’t seem to be effecting them at all.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Carlsberg don’t do first innings but if they did…….
September 26th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
dammit
September 26th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Wow Delgado just had a HUGE K.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
ok, nice tag
September 26th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Luke Montz? Really? Blanton, have some respect for yourself.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
…it would probably still taste like Danish piss!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Marlins got out of bases loaded 2 out jam.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
I heard on channel 10 sports tonite that during interviews in NY today the marlin players were saying how much they hated the Mets, that it was actually a personal thing. Sounds good to me.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Georgie, it was probably Scott Olsen, because he hates everybody and everything.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Rumor has it their not fond of us either, especially Scott Olsen.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
alright dobbsy, let’s get this going!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
No, it was a bunch of Marlins, not just Olsen. They really hate the Mets. Remember last year when Hanley Ramirez said “F*ck everybody on the Mets. I’m gonna kick their butts.”
Go fish.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
The Marlins hate the Mets more than they hate us, except for maybe Olsen.
I’ve posted this once before, but tell me this guy doesn’t look exactly like Dobbs.
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2501483264/nm0001555
September 26th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
err… he doesn’t
September 26th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Nice hussle by Werth. Utley can really blow it open here.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
NEPA, I can see that.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
well, knowing that utley isn’t very clutch, my expectations are low. i hope he surprises me though!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
UTLLLLLLLLEYYYYYYYY YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
WoooooooHoooooooo!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Huge double by Utley! Wow!
Gotta hand it to him, he’s been picking it up well as of late!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
yeah, Chase!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
WOW
September 26th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
ok, color me surprised. we just blew this thing wide open. so sweet.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
CT, the key now is to KEEP this thing wide open.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
oh man, this is fantastic!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
SJ Mike, i think tacking on another run there just helped
September 26th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
With that lineup, the Nats should not be able to score 7 more runs in this game. It just shouldn’t happen.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
No complaints on this end, CT. Also good to tack into the Washington bullpen already. Hopefully tax them rest of the weekend.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
2 on for the Muts and Reyes and Murphy popped out. Top 3 2-0 fish
September 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I’m at the stadium and I love the phillies!!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I agree SJ Mike, it’s always good to get into the bullpen this early during the 1st game of a series.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Manny, they have Wi Fi at the stadium?
September 26th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I must admit the guy from the Marlins, Volstad, looks very shaky so far.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
volstad is a good pitcher with a top notch curve. the mets are facing two tough matchups this weekend with him and nolasco.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Cubs/Brewers are on ESPN, btw for those who don’t know, so it is possible to watch that game also.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
nice job Joe.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Olsen’s not terrible either.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
three good innings from blanton, here’s hoping for 4 to 6 more!
September 26th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Something tells me Olsen will try to pick a fight with someone since it’d be the closing days at Shea and he apparently hates Shea with a passion.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Yeah I got the Phils on this machine here, the Mets on my wall TV in my room and the Brews/Cubs downstairs in my living room.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
yeah, Olsen is a d-bag. I actually met Dontrelle Willis in Hawaii, we were both honeymooning in December of ‘06. I asked him about Olsen and he said “aw man, he’s alright”, but he said it with a smile as if he knew Olsen was a duche. Anyways, a week later, they both got arrested for DUI and Olsen resisted arrest and got tasered. Quality man that Olsen.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Who can forget Olsen freaking out on Chase Utley for calling time out. Guy needs anger management.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
also, Olsen and Miguel Cabrera got into a fist fight in the dugout because Olsen thought he didn’t try hard enough for a ground ball.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Blanton is doing a great job of keeping the ball on the ground tonight.
September 26th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
great job by blanton tonight so far. hopefully he gets his fill and eats more innings.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Church just hit into a DP with 2 on. Top 4 2-0 fish
September 26th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Griffin: Funny you say that. My roommate met Dontrelle at a strip club in Tampa back in March (over Spring Training). Dude threw a load of cash toward my roommate and his buddy, and he told the dancer “take care of my boys.” My roommate offered him a beer, but he wasn’t having it. Dontrelle does it expensive, so he bought them some vodka-based drinks. Hilarious.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Dontrelle does seem like a good guy who you could sit down and have a beer with.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Danish piss lol
September 26th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Dontrelle sounds like a hell of a guy, did he know he was ‘taking care’ of Philly fans?
September 26th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
that IS funny. I was going to say that Dontrelle was one of the nicest people I had ever met. I told him to take it easy on my Phillies and he said “you know J-Roll is my boy, right?” I told him I was a huge Phillies fan from New York and he said “that’s crazy. that’s dedication”. Then I told him that I saw his grand slam at Shea Stadium that summer and he said “yeah, I got ALL of that one”. He was a cool dude and I shall never forget the time we shared in the omelette line during breakfast.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
yep Carlsberg is one of the worst beers I’ve ever tasted and the most common where I am are Carling and Fosters…
September 26th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
bwahahaha
Watching the game on MLB.TV and they’ve broken from the Phillies game coverage to show Church of the Mets hitting into a DP.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I’m kind of sad to see the D-Train go to the American League and his overall pitching decline.
Being in the AL is doing him a huge disservice, considering what a great hitting pitcher he is.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Would love to see Dontrelle end up here with Jimmy at some point in his career.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
yeah, I was a Dontrelle Willis fan after that encounter. I’m sad to see him struggle.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Jimmy and Dontrelle would probably be late for a lot of games, though.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Actually, my roommate is from Connecticut, so he’s a Sox fan. But if I was there (and I could’ve been if I didn’t leave Tampa that night), I would’ve immediately thanked him for his performance Sept. 30, 2007.

Some Carlsberg adverts….
So back to my original point
Carlsberg don’t do first innings but if they did…..
September 26th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
seeing an interview with those guys together they’ll probably be early trying to out-do eachother in batting practise
September 26th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
SJ I’m using my bb haha and I’m loving this game
September 26th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
crap. 2 unearned runs
September 26th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Ryan Howard giveth and Ryan Howard taketh away.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Well it’s nice he helps the team and our case against his arbitration number in the same game.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Blanton sort of reminds me of Chris on The Family Guy.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
haha, very true NJ
September 26th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
well, no lead is safe i guess. we just have to keep fighting.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Dobbs vs. a lefty. Doesn’t happen often
September 26th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
i kind of hope dontrelle ends up as the next ankiel and turns into an outfielder if he’s shot as a pitcher. you just can’t help but like the guy, i’ve always wanted him as a phillie although not so much after this season.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
damn, an insurance run there would’ve been nice. I wonder if Chollie thought about pinch hitting Feliz there
September 26th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
well, i think Blanton’s getting tired… and he’s done
September 26th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
review it!
September 26th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Oh, boy, an instant replay!
September 26th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
WTF is that noob fan playing at??
September 26th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
How can a guy who routinely went 115+ pitches tire constantly around the 80 mark, somethings different since the trade and it’s been brewing all year…
September 26th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
And now the idiot is on the phone.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
throw that duche over the fence
September 26th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Haha, maybe thats Manny.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Send Cholly into the stands to sort that arsehole out
September 26th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
NEPA-hahahaha
September 26th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Send this guy down to take a better seat in the house… Next to Brett Myers!
September 26th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Was it a homer? Following on the computer.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
That dude should be tossed
September 26th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Florida up 3-0 now and Brewers tied 1-1.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
NJ, was that you who said you could put a little hat on Charlie and he’d look like Winston Churchill?
September 26th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
yep
September 26th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
woooooooooo Florida 3 up now
September 26th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Nj, he could also pull off W C Fields.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
That four-eyes dude better not be a PN reader. I swear to God …
September 26th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
still a solid start from blanton. i’d have liked him to go one more inning at least but the howard error made that unlikely. plus the goof in the stands trying to catch that, and if he had, he’d have only thrown it back anyway. that guy needs a good smack upside the head.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Tim, you never know…..
September 26th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
looks like your right there Georgie
September 26th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the homerun the only earned run by Blanton. The first was from the passed ball and then the other 2 were from Howard’s error.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Yep, only 1 ER.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
I like the music choice coming into the 7th inning. Some 80s style Rocky music!
September 26th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Uh, oh, the debate starts in 2 min, what to do, what to do?
September 26th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Scott Eyre, come on please.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Not particularly impressive from Blanton again.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
I rigged up my mini portable TV that I use as a video monitor (I’m a freelancer) to the debate and have my big TV on the game.
September 26th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Mets got 1, 3-1
September 26th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I’m trying to balance all 3 baseball games, the UConn football game and now the debate. Not complaining though.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I have 4 other tv’s but they’re all in other rooms.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
My portable video monitor I use for my field shoots is only 2 inches, so that’s why baseball is on the bigger TV. The debate’s audio is more important then the video.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Well, I have the debate on so I’m relying on you guys to let me know if anything happens in the game. Thanks.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Sure could use some insurance runs…
September 26th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
NEPA: You’re a UConn fan? I’m up in UConn country.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Awesome, Marlins got another run.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Get your insurance runs anyway you can. Good job Chase.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Yea, I go to UConn. My number one team is Penn State though.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Vic is picking up his play a little bit here tonight. We really need that.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
I’m a St. John’s b-ball fan. I probably shouldn’t tell anyone that.
Give Chollie credit, by pinch running Bruntlett for Burrell, he gave the Phils a run. Bruntlett broke up the double play. So props to Charlie.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
The Mets are down 4-1 and the fish have two runners on and no out. Manuel is using his third pitcher of the inning.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Nice. You’ve been to Willimantic’s Main Street Cafe, or Willi-Brew? Right?
September 26th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Phils
September 26th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Obama-phils party is off the chain son.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I’ve been to Willi-brew before, love that place. How is the Main St. Cafe?
September 26th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
come on boys.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Muts bullpen looking stellar tonight in their so-far-limited work.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Did anybody see The Onion’s article about “Carlos Voltron.”
It’s hilarious.
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/87182
September 26th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Would you guys rather see the Brewers as the wild card winner, or the Mets? I think I already know the answer, just throwing it out there…
September 26th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Jamie, for me the Brewers, just because from our point of view, we’d match up far better against them in my opinion.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Mike, I’m on the same page as you. I think we can handle them a little better, although the Mets pitchers are a complete disaster compared to the Brewers.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I think I’d want to see the Dodgers, so maybe the Mets getting the wild card wouldn’t be too bad of a thing.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
that’s a funny article SJ mike!
marlins have the bases loaded 1 out, Uggla up. It’s 4-1 already.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
damn, Uggla hit a scorching line drive but it was right to David Wright. A few feet to the left or right, 3 runs score. Damn.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Jamie, and I know I’m thinking ahead, but as exciting as it would be, the thought of having to potentially face the Mets in the postseason scares me just because no matter how you slice it, they would play with a higher form of emotion. It’d be a series that could literally spend either team who goes to the World Series.
I just like the matchups with the Brewers better.
But don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Win tonight, win tomorrow, win Sunday, worry about all that come Monday.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Come on Willingham.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Main St. Cafe is Willi Brew. Same place, but nobody knows what the hell to call it. I live in Colchester (Rt. 66 to 85) and work in Norwich. Nothing like Willi Brew in the area, though I do like Colchester’s Cafe on Main (nice tap with about 25 beers).
September 26th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Griffin, I saw that article posted on Metsblog.com.
The ending paragraph is what made me lose it laughing, that Aaron Heilman came in to give up 618 runs.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
yes, bases loaded walk. 5-1 marlins
September 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Anybody who is watching what is going on at Shea (I’m on Gameday), what is the atmosphere like up at Shea?
September 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Here comes the 4th mets pitcher of the inning.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Yes, walk. 5-1
September 26th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Heilman looking *TIGHT* again tonight! Muts bullpen line so far:
0.2 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 2 ER.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Chooch, you ain’t that fast amigo
September 26th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Oh, I’ve always just called it Willi-Brew. I love their Certified Gold and Super Silly Saison. Great place.
Mets blow.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
What is the atmosphere like at Shea for anybody who is watching it on TV?
September 26th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Man, how nice would it have been if Sweet Lou would have played someone from above AA ball last night and beat the Muts? We could have had a chance at clinching tonight. Ugh. Oh well, hopefully the scores hold tonight and we can have a shot tomorrow instead.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
that was not a foul
September 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Love the fire.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Charlie should just let it go though. 4 run lead, he needs to calm down a bit.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
go get em Charlie
September 26th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Charlie!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Charlie
September 26th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Why was Manual ejected?
September 26th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
SJ Mike, I’m watching it on MLB.TV a little here and there. Needless to say, they’re not happy one bit.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
A strike 3 that hit the ground. 3rd base ump said it was a foul tip that hit the ground so he was still safe with 2 strikes. Charlie argued and got tossed.
Lidge is firing
September 26th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Excellent win.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Nice job, let’s go fish
September 26th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Quiet at Shea. Good times.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
George Cantu!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Another run for the Fish.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Big win, AND one can see a young Sarah Palin in a swimsuit on Youtube. Crisis-smishish, Great Freakin’ Country ladies and germs!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Sarah scares the bejesus out of me, in a swimsuit or whatever.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
I’m at a rubber chicken dinner and keeping up with the games. They had steak or chicken…..I had the lasagna.I am keeping dibs on all 3 games.Congrats on your playoff berth.Just to let you know,I just lost my dinner looking at the Mets getting their assess kicked.I now hope the Mets do NOT make it to the playoffs so that the flaws can be exposed and hopefully corrected in the greatest season in baseball……..the hot stove league.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Miner, thanks for the congrats, but we haven’t clinched anything yet. We’re just assured of a “tie” if the Mets lose. We still have to win one of these last 2, or have the Mets lose one of them, to clinch. But I hope the Mets don’t make it, too!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
I just spent a small fortune on StubHub for tomorrow. I was at the clincher last year and with Moyer on the mound, I couldn’t resist not being there if they clinch tomorrow.
LETS GO PHILLIES!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
I too am going to the game tomorrow. My record at Phils games this year is 0-11. I wish I was kidding.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
The old 6-4-3! Goin’ to the ninth!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
I was just thinking about going online for a ticket tomorrow.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Hopefully I don’t jinx it, but this Mets offense looks completely dead. No fight whatsoever.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Thanks for sharing that, Griffin.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I was originally going to go to the game tomorrow but my friends bailed on me (why is still beyond me). So never got tickets….
September 26th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Shea is a graveyard compared to Miller Park right now.
Pedro Martinez is laughing in the dugout, if I were a Mets fan I’d be puking right now.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I’ll be there in spirit, but physically I’ll be watching on the computer. Wish I was there!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Tim, totally random question: how old are you?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I’m have superbox tickets for sunday’s game. So excited.
GO PHILS!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I think there are 73 people at Shea right now, including the players.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Brewers up 5-1 now.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
I wonder how much the Mets will complain about the Cubs lineup – that would be the kettle calling the pot black.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I think on Sunday the Cubs are going to play all of their minor leaguers against Sabathia. This way they’ll say they played one game with their minor leaguers against the Mets and Brewers.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Marmol is warming up now down 5-1, yet he couldn’t throw the past two nights in close games against the Mets?!?!?!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Mets lose!!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Haha, GIDP for Reyes.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Well, good night everyone. Let’s win tomorrow, dance on the mound and save Cole for game 1 of the playoffs.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
You know I sincerely could not sleep last night because this whole thing concerned me. Tonight has eased some of my fears and I’ll be able to sleep better and relax…..until tomorrow.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Mets have honeydew season coming up….Honey do this,Honey do that.I am relieved that this campain is over, and yes its over.I will say this for the 2009 Mets,a fresh coat of paint,a new season,a new beginning and a new park;but all that will NOT take away the biterness and pain this 2007/2008 campain has shown me.Oh well…..139 more days til pitchers and catchers.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Yeah, I didn’t sleep well either last nite, SJ, feel more reassured now, will get a good night’s sleep, later everyone.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Great win . Hope the phillies don’t let burrell walk. If they intend to replace him with werth, werth isn’t a everyday player. can’t hit righthander pitching on consistant bases. But these cheap owners will probaley do it to save money.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Grumpy Miner, I know many won’t say this, but I seriously feel for you (and the other civil good Mets fans), especially with the closing of Shea Stadium.
It is bitter sweet to come down to the wire. It was the same way with us when the Vet closed in 2003. You guys are still in it though.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Miner, you have always been a decent Mets fan on here, although I’m not sorry for your team, I do feel bad for you, it’s obvious you are heavily invested in them emotionally.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
I am kind of hoping the Mets and Brewers are tied going into Sunday. I really don’t want Sabathia fresh to face us in game 1 of a possible NLDS matchup. If the brewers are one game up, they will likely not throw him Sunday (saving him for full rest in case of a one game playoff vs. the Mets or a possible game 1 start against us). Thoughts?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I wouldn’t mind a Mets/Brewers tie with a playoff game Monday. They can use CC for that game for all I care, and then give us Suppan, Parra, etc. I’d take that.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
What is the status of Ben Sheets?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Jamie…..as a Mets fan I want the Mets to lose but for different reasons.I don’t want to see a flawed team make it because it will masquerade the problem the Mets have and they don’t deserve it.Sometimes they say losing will make you stronger. Its a bitter feeling for me to know that the Mets aren’t going to see meaningful October baseball.Great thimg about not being in the playoffs is,I can get my basement cleared, paint the dining room/kitchen and start X-mas season shopping done early.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Santana starting on 3 days rest tommorow.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
SJ and george, thanx however I really don’t need the sympathy…but don’t get me wrong i do appreciate the feelings.Great thing about the Mets not making it for you guys, the hockey helmets sitting in the back of the short buses on a friday nite are not going to be back until april.Good luck in the playoffs guys, and hopefully a good rivalry with My Isles and your Flyers
September 26th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
So… The game was great.. The atmosphere was playoff-like and the offense came back to life. Charlie was amazing arguing in the ninth and throughout the game. And no, NEPA, that douchebag wasn’t me.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:03 am
Nepa I think your right that is manny. Why won’t he admit it?
September 27th, 2008 at 10:18 am
GrrrumpyMiner Says . Your mets proabley won’t win this year .but remember your team has a new stadium and more revenue. Our team is already bitching about next year’s payroll. They have no intention of going out and getting a ace starter or replacing burrell with a stud, Instead it will be werth.victorino and jenkins, Golson platoon. The mets will get a stud starter, a outfielder and I guess two or three good relief pitchers they have a one hundred and sixty million dollar payroll. the marlins will lose uggla and with there payroll would be hard to complete .The Braves are not going to spend on fa they need to do it in the draft which is hard. The National stink. I can see the mets winning for a lot of years. The only hope for the phillies is ownership selling. mets need to fire there general manager too many bad signing. We will have a GM named Amaro a yes man for the owners who is going to do what the cheap bas## want. The mets will eat bad contracts not our cheap bas##owners. So things look good for the future for you team.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:41 am
The Mets get what they truely want in the off-season and that’s to play the role of the spoilt brat and go shopping and the Phils don’t have that luxury financially and don’t have that excuse having won consecutive divisional pennants. The Mets have become a bitter, internally warring, drama insighting franchise and I really believe winning has become secondary to the battles going on internally so their going to go get their LFer, pay top dollar to add 2 more starts (assuming Perez leaves), they’ll likely be very agressive in giving one of the available closers a top money deal and they’ll sure as hell be after Hudson because they go shopping and they appease the fans and ownership and who doesn’t like a shopping spree in the firstplace? (We do ours just doesn’t tend to work out as well with the big stakes deals)
We can’t knock Amaro until he’s had time in the job to see what he’s all about though I am really high on Cashman because I really respect how he’s put his support team together and isn’t as chequebook happy as an outsider might assume.
September 27th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Nj the phillies could be shopping if they didn’t have cheap owners. and bad signing still paying thome. eaton, jenkins contracts, expect the mets to sign rod as closer, uggla to play second, dubin and lefthander from colorado can’t remember his name plus trade for holiday and still have money left,
September 27th, 2008 at 11:43 am
NJ also the reason I am not high on Amaro is no real experience and a company yes man, all he has done is contracts for gillick. If you are a phillies fan does this sound familar. Exactly what Wade did under giles and woodard.
September 27th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
I think the owners have been cheap as a result of putting a guy in there in Gillick who’s success is predicated on lesser deals having a greater impact but it rarely works that way now. Thome wasn’t a bad deal and the early Wade days were crying for a bat to build around but Gillicks major moves outside Lidge have been reaches and put Lidge on a team with one of the newer breed GM’s and that deal never happens, he’s done fantastically well in finding small guys who have contributed but very poorly with the ‘players’.
Uggla to the Mets isn’t going to happen, they don’t have the prospects and the Fish aren’t sending him to a division rival unless their backs against the wall. Durbin I doubt as I think he stays here on a Romero type deal that might not be best for us having half a bullpen account for $20m or he heads to a team more willing to pay middle relievers. I do agree they will be very agressive with Fuentes especially as a LHP against us and I’d expect them to make serious moves on Manny who I think goes back to the Dodgers and Dunn as well as Ibanez and Orlando Hudson though aparently they want to go young and put Murphy in there at 2nd.
With Amaro I reserve judgement because we have no indication of whether he’s a behind the times Bavasi or one of the new breed of young GM’s willing to impliment a new system. Although it’s an incredible achievement where the Phils have got themselves to through Gillick those around have had just as much influence on how that’s gone and the cracks are widening. We’re prepared to pay for guys in the later rounds of the draft but not up top where teams are having success at the moment and really in playing in a FA where we’re not the most attractive offer resulting in paying over the odds for guys who’s ceiling don’t match what they’ve been brought in to do.
