I think the owners have been cheap as a result of putting a guy in there in Gillick who's success is predicated on lesser deals having a greater impact but it rarely works that way now. Thome wasn't a bad deal and the early Wade days were crying for a bat to build around but Gillicks major moves outside Lidge have been reaches and put Lidge on a team with one of the newer breed GM's and that deal never happens, he's done fantastically well in finding small guys who have contributed but very poorly with the 'players'.

Uggla to the Mets isn't going to happen, they don't have the prospects and the Fish aren't sending him to a division rival unless their backs against the wall. Durbin I doubt as I think he stays here on a Romero type deal that might not be best for us having half a bullpen account for $20m or he heads to a team more willing to pay middle relievers. I do agree they will be very agressive with Fuentes especially as a LHP against us and I'd expect them to make serious moves on Manny who I think goes back to the Dodgers and Dunn as well as Ibanez and Orlando Hudson though aparently they want to go young and put Murphy in there at 2nd.

With Amaro I reserve judgement because we have no indication of whether he's a behind the times Bavasi or one of the new breed of young GM's willing to impliment a new system. Although it's an incredible achievement where the Phils have got themselves to through Gillick those around have had just as much influence on how that's gone and the cracks are widening. We're prepared to pay for guys in the later rounds of the draft but not up top where teams are having success at the moment and really in playing in a FA where we're not the most attractive offer resulting in paying over the odds for guys who's ceiling don't match what they've been brought in to do.

NJ also the reason I am not high on Amaro is no real experience and a company yes man, all he has done is contracts for gillick. If you are a phillies fan does this sound familar. Exactly what Wade did under giles and woodard.

Nj the phillies could be shopping if they didn't have cheap owners. and bad signing still paying thome. eaton, jenkins contracts, expect the mets to sign rod as closer, uggla to play second, dubin and lefthander from colorado can't remember his name plus trade for holiday and still have money left,

The Mets get what they truely want in the off-season and that's to play the role of the spoilt brat and go shopping and the Phils don't have that luxury financially and don't have that excuse having won consecutive divisional pennants. The Mets have become a bitter, internally warring, drama insighting franchise and I really believe winning has become secondary to the battles going on internally so their going to go get their LFer, pay top dollar to add 2 more starts (assuming Perez leaves), they'll likely be very agressive in giving one of the available closers a top money deal and they'll sure as hell be after Hudson because they go shopping and they appease the fans and ownership and who doesn't like a shopping spree in the firstplace? (We do ours just doesn't tend to work out as well with the big stakes deals)

We can't knock Amaro until he's had time in the job to see what he's all about though I am really high on Cashman because I really respect how he's put his support team together and isn't as chequebook happy as an outsider might assume.

GrrrumpyMiner Says . Your mets proabley won't win this year .but remember your team has a new stadium and more revenue. Our team is already bitching about next year's payroll. They have no intention of going out and getting a ace starter or replacing burrell with a stud, Instead it will be werth.victorino and jenkins, Golson platoon. The mets will get a stud starter, a outfielder and I guess two or three good relief pitchers they have a one hundred and sixty million dollar payroll. the marlins will lose uggla and with there payroll would be hard to complete .The Braves are not going to spend on fa they need to do it in the draft which is hard. The National stink. I can see the mets winning for a lot of years. The only hope for the phillies is ownership selling. mets need to fire there general manager too many bad signing. We will have a GM named Amaro a yes man for the owners who is going to do what the cheap bas## want. The mets will eat bad contracts not our cheap bas##owners. So things look good for the future for you team.
