Gamenight: Phillies (75-63) At Nationals (53-85)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, September 02, 2008 06:36 PM
Headline: Hamels set to step up against Nats
The Major Players: Cole Hamels, John Lannan, Chase Utley, Ryan Zimmerman
The Venue: Nationals Park, Washington D.C.
The Number: 2 games behind (Mets)
It was not the result we at Phillies Nation were seeking yesterday, as the Nats beat on Kyle Kendrick and took game one, 7-4. The loss dropped the Phils to two games behind the Mets with 24 left to play. Tonight Cole Hamels sets up vs. John Lannan. The Nats have a seven-game winning streak going.
Eleven Up: Jimmy Rollins has Lannan in his book this season with a homer. He’s hitting .500 against the guy who nicked Utley with a pitch last year.
Lights Out: Hamels has a 2.89 ERA in 18 night starts this season.
Invader Zim: Zimmerman has a seven-game hitting streak (coinciding with the Nats’ winning streak). In that time he’s hitting .428.
Burr-ied: Responding to Pat Burrell’s poor play in the 3-hole (and better play from Werth), Charlie Manuel has slotted Jayson Werth into that spot, moving Burrell back to the five-hole.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (11-8) 3.13 ERA
Nationals: Tim Redding (8-12) 3.92 ERA
Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 90, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Nice to see Werth getting a shot in the 3 hole. Actually love the line-up, very strong 6 deep.
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:53 pm
This or any lineup will only be strong when they start to hit on a regular basis.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Hamels needs to go out there and pitch a gem vs a team that has nothing to lose like the Nats.A loss for your “ACE” can hurt them even more.Oh and glad to see the Mets get Hamels this weekend; another reason he needs this game tonight.Might be Hamels/Niese this Sunday IF Niese cam beat the Brew Crew.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:06 pm
How people get on Hamels back and declare he’s not an ace is a mystery to me. He put’s up great ERA numbers and strikeout numbers, yet just because he gets hardly any run support and thus dosn’t win 20 games people say he isn’t an ace ? I’d take Cole over almost any pitcher in the national league on any given day, maybe with the exception of Sabathia and Santana.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I agree fred. He doesn’t win 20 games because the Phillies offense didn’t support him enough.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Hey… 5 posts and no reference to the Mets in 2007. I need you guys to stay on pace so I can win the pool. Please bring up last year more often.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Hamels has been unlucky this year, but certain games we’ve needed him to come out and pitch lights out and he hasn’t. We know he has gotten very unlucky this year with run support, and those things happen. But I can recall like 3-4 games where he gave up like 3 runs when we could only give up 2 or 4 runs when he needed to only give up 3.
I don’t know if that makes him an ace or not. Who cares? That’s just a title. I also would take him over anyone else except Zito, Sabathia, or Nomo.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Wow shane, nice.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm
It’s like, EARTH TO COLE, you need to give up 0 runs this game because our offense is anemic if it is not hitting homers…
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Elijah Dukes: crappy baserunner
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Wow, really Harry? Man, you’ve really gotta go.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Who are the only four Phillies to hit a home run in five straight games?
Anyone know this?
Im thinking Thome was one of them. Maybe Howard. Abreu?
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Ruiz is a scrub at the plate, surprised he beat that out.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm
i say charlie starts the marson era
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:41 pm
That was respectable baseball. Hamels bunts over and Rollins singles Ruiz in from second, good hustle from Ruiz on the basepaths. Utley then singles J-Roll in from second.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Singles! I love it. Come Howard, its the thing to do!
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm
LOL Chase Utley is CRAZY!
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Chase is the man. That’s payback for breaking his wrist !
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm
yea that was nuts but why send him when you have your “best player” up with a guy on third. This guy needs to get up
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Cheap shot by Utley.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Next time, don’t block the plate.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
that wasn’t a cheap shot, he blocked the plate
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
They broke his wrist but that was an extremly hard slide. Some could classify that as a tackle attempt there was no sliding involved there just a straight dive.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Foolish play – looks like Utley tweaked his shoulder with the flying body block.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Wonder if anything comes of this.. if the Nats had any balls (which they don’t) they’d go after someone on the Phils.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Matt – I dont think the Nationals have that fire in them.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
He was clearly out but decided to spear him. Wonder of he went on his own or did Smith send him?
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm
TJ – I agree. that’s why they continually are a sub .500 team. I mean seriously, if the pitcher doesn’t stick up for his catcher, I don’t know who else will.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Great hard playing by Chase. Thats what, the 3rd catcher Utley’s knocked out?
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Chase is something else. You’d think they’d nail him when he comes up again..
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
The nats announcers seem to think it was a perfectly legit play lol.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
danny – as long as they dont hurt him whatever.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Nice throw by Milledge there, almost had him. The Phils announcers loved it.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
At what point does Utley get the reputation as a dirty player? My money is on Linda Cohn doing highlights tonight with her typical mets snarl talking about the play and then highlighting other similar plays by Chase.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
He just plays hard, there’s nothing wrong with diving in if the plate is being blocked. Come on the brew crew, need a win from those boys tonight
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
I remember Mark Grace saying a lot of players don’t like Utley, He ( MArk Grace) says he’s known as a dirty player. I remember when Utley burried Russell Martin a few years ago. Same reaction. non Phillies Phans called it dirty. but it was just hard playing. Pete Rose like.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:17 pm
If a catcher isn’t blocking the plare, they aren’t their job.I remember a few years back when Todd Hundley did the same thing,he said that if the runner was gonna score,he’d have to break his leg.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Utley just does what it takes to win, he’s not a dirty player. He’s a gamer
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Since when does flying head first into a guy’s ribs constitute a clean play? He never made any play for the plate. I like Utley but that wasn’t a clean play.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:47 pm
He was trying to knock the ball loose because he was blocking the plate. If he slid, he’d have been out.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:50 pm
So when did mlb turn into the nfl? Knock the ball loose by putting your shoulder into the guy’s rib cage?
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
5-1 Mets – this game just turned into an absolute must win.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Nice job Jimmy. Let’s get at least 1 more.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Lol that’t hardly the NFL Fred.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:58 pm
This is definitely a must win.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Agree – definitely a must win…these Mets just wont roll over and die this year…
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Good base running by Jimmy there.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
i think sadley this is a dirty play that will rear its ugly head during the end of the year series and prob cost the phils the playoffs by them wanting to start a fight and to get back for utley stupid dive into the catcher
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Big double play there. Cole not an ace? I’m not so sure about that.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Bush League Bush League…..The Philthies play dirty…. Karma
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Haha, Niese made it threw 3+ innings pitched tonight. That’s a lot of Mets bullpen to look forward to.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:18 pm
exactly – already a one run game – go brewers! (for now)
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:25 pm
tied up
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:25 pm
God, this inning is making me nervous.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:28 pm
romero always kinda makes me nervous – definitely earns his strikes…but the Brewers tied it up – so this night could end well all around
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Guess our ace threw too many pitches tonight to face the Mets on Sunday.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
trade jimmy rollins
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:33 pm
If we pull this one out it will be a very fun hour or so being able to watch the Mets knowing we can’t lose any ground.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
A Mets win against hte Brewers isn’t the end of the world honestly. If the Mets sweep the Brew Crew and we get 3 out of 4 from them then we can be in the wild card and division hunt. It doesn’t hurt to have 2 options honestly.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Wow, that Marlins/Braves game is insane. 14-13
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Does anyone else feel like me that felix is a good fielder, but can’t hit to save his life. If he doesn’t get a fastball he is toast.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
and ryan howard
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
And this whole team.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Good win, I’ll take a combined shutout any day.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Ryan Howard is a good fielder who can’t hit to save his life? Uh…
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
no no. trade jimmy rollins…and ryan howard while their value is still good
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
He was saying he can’t hit off-speed pitches. Only fastballs.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
and is that Nationals#1 as in the #1 pick in next years draft?
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
and they can only hit fastballs
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Where are all the Mets fans at?
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Fred….wright here listening to a good game at work.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Hamels gutted it out today, plus the bullpen didn’t implode.I guess Hamels is salivating at facing Santana (after Niese showed he’s not ready for prime time yet) this Sunday. Two More Games Vs the Blue Crew and Phillies/Mets can commence again.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Grrrumpy Miner is here and I highly respect him for that, the rest are busy shitting their pants knowing that bullpen still has to get at least 9 outs.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:28 pm
I’m here…. listening to the same good game.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
NEPA……now its hopefully 6 more outs to go.BTW thanx
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I’m kind of hoping that the Mets/Brewers match goes way longer than the remaining two innings. After the big drama win of last Tuesday night following the big Sunday night win just before, the Phillies Pen was exhausted. It could happen to any team.
So let’s hope go to bed and check the Internet tomorrow to see that the Brewers beat the Mets at 5:00 am.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm
No problem.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm
LOL brewers just brought in gagne to face wright beltran and delgado
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Haha – Gagne will give up 5 runs, no doubt.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Only took Gagne 10 pitches to take care of business.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Wow, scoreless inning for Gagne, God just wasted a miracle on that I guess.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:34 pm
I dunno if a loooong game would make the Mets pen any worse than it is… Plus, with the September call-ups, there are 13 people in the pen.
With players getting sleep if it goes real long, I imagine the bullpen could carry them through Thursday if they go REEEEAAAAAAL long. lol
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
If the Mets can bring this to the 10th inning with the heart of the Brewers order up I’ll have to give them a lot of credit. This is a big game, especially now that the Phils have won, and they’ve stepped up a lot after the rookie had a rough outing. I’ll give credit where credit is due.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Corey Hart Bucky Dent
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Time to give them that credit.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Nicely done, Mets bullpen.
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:59 pm
(Previous comment rendered less clever after the posting engine stripped the symbols out.)
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:00 pm
that’s very gracious of you NEPA
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:01 pm
haha, they deserve it.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Maybe now I’ll move on to ripping apart that Mets offense that’s been absent for 7 straight innings.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:03 pm
looks like you spoke too soon, NEPA…1st and 3rd, none out
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Well… if its not the bullpen, then it HAS to be the offense that deserves some ripping….
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:04 pm
it;s like god damn clockwork.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:13 pm
go mets!!!
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:14 pm
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO METSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:16 pm
QUIET IN HERE! I QUESS THATS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR SEASON IS COMING TO AN END! BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR!
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
2 on for Rickie Weeks, still hope I guess.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Mets win!
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Great win by the Mets, much props.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
“Put it in the books!”Amazins win again. So with this win…..six bucks and my wright eye tells me that the Mets get a good old fashioned ass kicking tomorrow
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
If the mets win the east. This is the series that will decide it to go to brewers park and win is big .
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm
you guys should be happy we won. atleast we’re giving you a shot at the wildcard
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:33 pm
I am by far the best starting pitcher on this team.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:35 pm
The Brewers are overrated…The get 2 men on against the worst bullpen in baseball and can’t come up…thats sad.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:37 pm
the bullpen is usually only bad on the games the mets lose. and thats not often of late.
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:39 pm
That really makes no sense Z. I pray that was like a joke or something.
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:08 am
Should be a great month. Looking forward to this weekend. As much as we all “hate” each other, you have to admit it’s fun. A true rivalry. I’d say good luck but it would not be genuine.
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:35 am
F*ck the mets! Today at the Nats stadium people were like “It’s OK if the Phillies win… as long as they beat the Mets and win the division” haha Nobody likes them
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:38 am
the mets are getting the sweep tommorow, sorry ladies. and then we can cruise on by when we play you guys. cant wait. and then it only gets easier.
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:40 am
(her her her lets insert a 2007 joke here, pretty clever man)
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:41 am
last i checked the 2nd half 2007 mets were not nearly as good as the 2nd half 2008 mets. jerry manuel is a good man.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:14 am
Great game by Hamels. I saw a comment above that Hamels wins 20 if he gets consistent offensive support. Nice try at stealing home by Utley and I liked Rollins’ hustle in getting into rundown allowing the run to score despite the doubleplay. Go Phillies. Tonight is another MUST WIN to take into Shea.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:21 am
good win for the phils, especially at a time when hamels needed to go out and look dominant. now just win tomorrow, take the series, and get ready to sweep the mets.
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:18 am
That wasn’t what you call a “good win” . You have to expect the phillies to beat up on the Nationals especially with Hamels on the mound. Anyway, Brewers who?!?!?
September 3rd, 2008 at 9:20 am
every win in September is a GREAT WIN. . . I dont care if you are playing the Little Sisters of the Poor.. you still need that win and should be pumped when you get it
