Gamenight: Phillies (76-64) At Mets (79-61)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, September 05, 2008 05:38 PM
Headline: It’s the big show, and Phils must conquer
The Major Players: Brett Myers, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, JC Romero, Mike Pelfrey, Duaner Sanchez, Luis Ayala
The Venue: Shea Stadium, Queens, N.Y.
The Number: 3 games behind (Mets)
Here we go. After the Phillies dropped two of three to the lowly Nationals, they find themselves in need of at least two wins against the Mets in the biggest series of the year. Brett Myers toes the rubber for the Phils; Mike Pelfrey gets the call for New York.
Big Pelf: Mike Pelfrey has been fantastic as of late for the Metropolitians. In his last four starts, he has given up just six runs while going into the seventh each time.
Be The Ace: Since returning from the minors, Brett Myers has been the third best pitcher in baseball (behind CC Sabathia and Rich Harden). He gave up three runs in five innings against the Mets his first game back.
Victor-Not: Since August 26, Shane Victorino has lost eight points in his average. He wasn’t in the starting lineup Wednesday.
Futile Play: The Phillies are just 5-10 against the Mets this season.
Phillies: Brett Myers (8-10) 4.40 ERA
Mets: Mike Pelfrey (13-8) 3.66 ERA
Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 78, mostly cloudy
Lineup:
MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday
Your gamenight beer: Okay — let’s get down to business with good beer. Dogfish Head presents Indian Brown Ale. Yeah, delicious stuff. Nutty, coffee-like, hearty, real strong, deep stuff. You’ll like it once, have a second, and be all set. What to eat? Have some Chinese food tonight — maybe some pork fried rice or something. Something that’ll fill you up and get you going for the biggest weekend of the season.
Go Phillies!

Watch Myers shut down the Mets
September 5th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
^^^ Is that a Dark Knight reference? Hope so.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I was just fooling around with some data, and came up with this for anyone who’s interested.. Myers’ last time out:
http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/ljump12/?action=view¤t=Myers830Big.jpg
I plan on doing a lot more data analysis including strike zone location.. but i’m just getting started on this, so give me some time.

Looks like a good game tonight, however the Phils if need be can empty out their bullpen because without a shadow of a doubt, tomorrows game will be rained out because of Hanna and be well rested. But Sunday will be looming and looking at a Day/Knight twin bill.Hope y’all in Philly fare well with Hanna as well.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Oh and can’t forget my bitter rivals in South Jersey……Be safe tomorrow.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
We could use the rain here, my garden is parched, but hope it doesn’t interfere with the game. I am about to put on my lucky 1980 pink Phillies Fever t-shirt, haven’t worn it since the 80’s, has a few holes, but I will try anything. My dad taught me superstition, particularly with the Phils, at an early age. During the 1980 playoffs and ws, if the Phils were ahead I wouldn’t move for an entire game for fear of changing their luck. Strange but harmless. PHILLIES FEVER!!!!
September 5th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Man, feeling anxious. Just get this game started already!
September 5th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
why so serious?
we still got the division
September 5th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
I’m nervous to watch this game. I don’t know what I’m gonna do with myself if they start losing these games.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
NEPA, I’ve been nervous since I got over my initial anger after Wednesday’s loss.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
By the way, I love this extreme overconfidence by Mets fans.
From Metsblog
“This series is so more important for the phillies. We have no pressure on us at all. I have no doubt we will win 2 out of 3 cause we have seen no different this year.”
September 5th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Yep it’s textbook, in the heads of blogging Mets fans reality doesn’t exist. The Angels storming the AL West feel pressured to not get complacent but the Mets fans with just a 3 game lead are already inquiring about WS tickets becuase there’s ‘no pressure on them at all’…
September 5th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Seriously when did the Yankees become the respectable team in NYC?
September 5th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
NJ, I’ve been thinking the same thing.
I honestly think the Yankees and their fans have been humbled as of lately realizing that you have to earn success and the postseason. They have dramatically quieted down as of late. I have a lot of friends who are Yankees fans and we get along when it comes to baseball a hell of a lot better as of late.
I met Tom McCarthy in December and I asked him at what point did he think Mets fans became more obnoxious then Yankees fans and he started laughing.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Awesome, using the running game. Gotta get this run in.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
So far, so good
September 5th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
nice… Loving the unintentional smallball
September 5th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
HAHAHAHA, funniest thing i’ve seen since Moyer rail down that ump.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Lets just give Pat the gold glove right now
September 5th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Strike three on wright, bullshit call.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Dare I say it, but don’t they look like they brought some swagger to Queens?
September 5th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Good effort by Pat the Glove
And very nice double play… Lets go PHILS
September 5th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
wierd I have that exact play on my mind before the pitch… Suck on that Mets fans
September 5th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
anyone else laugh their ass off when pat flopped?
September 5th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
I was quite amused when Pat flopped, yes.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
That was my favorite play of the year. That was something special. Sure, there’s been some Utley take out slides, The Burrell extra inning walker offer, the Taguchi opposite field double, the Bruntlett 2 out double, etc.
But that Burrell play was… wow.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
danny, see my above post.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
You know Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight will be playing that over and over again tonight…
September 5th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Shit, i missed it, what did Burrell do?
September 5th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Burrell tried to belly flop a diving catch and knocked the ball down. When he tried to get up, he tripped and flopped down again, losing his glove.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Haha A la Manny
September 5th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Good curverball for the K there.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Ah man, I can’t believe I missed that, I could use a good laugh today.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Don’t worry Georgie, it’s going to be all over Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight this evening.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Yea, that Manny play immediately came to mind for me. But Manny’s was just being a lazy asshole, Burrell is just really slow and stiff out there.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I noticed Pat has a Victo-beard going.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Apparently the chin beards are annoying Mets fans. If so, keep it up.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
yers already through 42 pitches through 2. how far do you think he will go?
September 5th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Good job getting out of that lead off double.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Why in god’s name do you intentionally walk a 260 hitter to help the muts turn their lineup over
September 5th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
to get to the pitcher when the tying run is in scoring position…
September 5th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I like the call to walk him – take it inning by inning. Don’t worry about the next inning til the current one is over.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
wow, that was a nice catch from Howard!
September 5th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
OH MY GOD!
September 5th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
I cant stand SNY!
September 5th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
How skin tight are Daniel Murphy’s pants? They might as well be leather.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Good short inning for Myers.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Pat’s play wasn’t THAT bad… he tried and he almost got it.. It’s not as funny as you guys think
September 5th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
NEPA, that’s one of the best things about the NFL, love those tight pants.
September 5th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Manny’s right. Pat did almost get it. It looked like a couple inches too short from a sure glove grab. And honestly, he did what he’s at least supposed to do there; keep the ball in front of him.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
My heart stopped for a second when Delgado swung at that pitch.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I’m so relieved that Myers is back on track. He’ll be crucial for the playoffs
September 5th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Great 4th inning there by Myers. Man, his breaking pitches look nasty tonight.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
ya sny sucks….burrell keep the ball in front and they were all like laughing at it
September 5th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Apparently, from the comments I’ve read over at Beerleaguer, SNY has been very forthcoming and all around nasty about the Phillies tonight.
What has SNY been saying exactly?
September 5th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
I watching the game on Comcast (Phillies broadcast) and they didn’t even talk about it, just showed the replay. Pat did what he was supposed to do, as SJ Mike says.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
They have NOT been nasty, well they laughed at burrell and that’s really about it. they have complemented Myers on his resurgence, Howard on that nice catch off Reyes bat, etc.
Philly fans reacting are just being overly sensitive I think.
Oh, and Ron Darling was insulted by Mike Schmidt telling the phillies that “that the mets know the you’re [phillies] better then them..” saying that mike was just talking to be heard, not becasue he was trying to be constructive.
but really, thats not a knock on the phillies, thats a knock on mike schmidt
September 5th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
8th strikeout??!! Is that right? Wow
September 5th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Man, another great play by Howard.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
This game is going way too fast! Phillies need to get some runs for Myers
September 5th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Good, crisp, quick game wright now…….hate the score, but good game thus far
September 5th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
I can’t believe it’s the 6th inning already now before 8:30
September 5th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Amazing pitching by Myers. His curve looks just filthy. I really hate the strike zone of this ump.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Alright lets get a rally going!
September 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Call me crazy, but I think Victorino should drag bunt here.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Mets are on the CW11 not SNY
September 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
or not
September 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
oh Jesus, you serious? Rollins picked off?
September 5th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Nice try J-Roll.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
ok, now with the top of the mets order, lets try for at LEAST 1 run here.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
or just take batters box and strike out in order…
September 5th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Umpires really need to check their ego at the door when they show up. Seriously.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Don’t think the Ump crew like our coaches anymore… Go Rich! Way to show some hustle out of the dugout…
September 5th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
How did Dubee get tossed?
September 5th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
The umpire flinched on what would’ve been a strike 3, like he was about to ring Murphy up. Murphy then hit a double, so Dubee came out to talk to Myers. And apparently he said something about that pitch on his way back to the dugout, and he got tossed.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
To the people that aren’t laughing at Burrell attempt – we’re not saying it wasn’t close. He made a nice attempt, if he had popped up and thrown it to second it would’ve been fine, but he got up, flopped back down and lost his glove. If you didn’t at least smirk at that you have zero sense of humor.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Ha.. I also saw the ump flinch too on that play… BOOO
September 5th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
That’s great! Well done Rich!
That should get the team fired up.
And kudos to Myers, man that guy has REALLY turned it around.
Go Phils!
September 5th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I laughed at Burrell’s attempt and applauded his effort at the same time. It’s one of the plays that is easy to laugh at since nothing became of it. Burrell was even laughing about it. He played it right, kept the ball in front of him, etc.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Missed the play but even the explanation and mental image made me laugh.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
The funny thing about Dubee’s ejection was that he didn’t even know he was ejected until he got in the dugout. He turned around with a very confused look on his face.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
NEPA: It wasn’t funny, that’s the point. The commentators didn’t think it was funny either. I thought it was awkward (when he loses his glove), but at first you guys were making such a big deal about it, as if it was Manny Ramirez on top of the baseball or something like that.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Sabathia seems to be cruising so far against the Padres….
September 5th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Bottomline is that Pat is having a great season defensively…pointing at things like this simply reinforces the stereotypical image that he’s bad (when he really isn’t)
September 5th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Maybe I am going crazy and my wildest dream became a reality, but did the Phillies manufacture a run in the first inning without a homerun? Who cares if Schneider threw the ball into center field . . .
September 5th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Manny, I’ve always been a big supporter of Burrell’s defense. I think it’s stupid how often he’s taken out as a “defensive replacement.” He isn’t fast, that’s true, but his arm and glove is relatively solid.
And I did find the play humorous, however, I still think that he played it correctly and did all you could ask of him which was to keep the ball in front of him.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Manny – are you kidding me? It was hysterical. Awkwardness is funny to me, maybe we just have different senses of humor. Everyone I’m watching it with (mix of mets and phils fans) thought it was hilarious, and so will everyone tonight whens its played on sportscenter over and over again.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Pat seems to have that perplexed look again at the plate.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
That’s perfectly fine, SJ Mike. I agree with you… I was originally referring to how there were like 10 comments in a row poking fun at Burrell and making it sound as if he made a mistake or was being Manny-like.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
HOME RUN!!!!!!!
September 5th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
yes dobbs
September 5th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Shea? Chez Philly more like! Go ‘The Natural’
September 5th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Yeah, I didn’t think Burrell looked stupid or anything. Nothing came of it and Burrell was even smiling about it.
And boy did Dobbs deliver big right there! Church ALMOST had it.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Manny, check my above post. The Manny play came to mind, but we all know Manny is lazy and irritating, Burrell is very fundamental, just really stiff out there. Never would I compare the playing styles of Burrell and Manny.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
That’s pretty cruel by Charlie, thanks for the homer now sit down and shut up!
September 5th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I love watchin brett when he’s got his swagger. He looks like a big hardass out there, just mowing people down.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Now see, Dobb’s homerun were in Philly like that, just over the wall and such, it’d immediately be called a “cheap homerun” by the Mets, their fans, and broadcast crew.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Did anyone notice Charlie sort of rub Pat on the arm in the dugout after he was out, those are the intangibles that we don’t usually see or hear about, that’s why the players like him.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Alright, we’re good
September 5th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Georgie, I saw that too. Almost as if saying “Don’t beat yourself up, Pat.”
September 5th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
I noticed that too, Georgie
MYERS: 9 strikeouts!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Dobbs could hit an opposite field shot out of PETCO and the Mets drones would still pull the CBP card…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Well, does Myers get the 8th inning now?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
MYERS!!! Well done!!!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Who would’ve thought that Myers would have the opportunity to bounce back this season and become a 10 game winner?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
On the basis of how he looked on his first start back against the Mets don’t think either he thought it.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Myers goes the 8th.
Yeah SJ, I am so impressed that Myers has turned it around. And it took guts for him to admit he was struggling and accept the demotion. He looks so solid right now.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
the pitcher spots up now so Myers will be lifted.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Maybe not go Brett!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Man that homerun was huge…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Paul, that’s the one thing I’ve always loved about Myers. He’s a gamer. He will own up to his performance, whether he’s good or he sucks. If he had a bad game, he’d be the first up there saying “I sucked.”
He’s a team player/cheerleader. He is a hothead sometimes, but his fire and passion is what drives his game.
He has given us what we sorely needed….a solid number 2.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Does Jimmy party when he’s in NY? Just before he got picked off the other inning I thought he looked either hung over or a little stoned.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Myers = amazing pitching…
Howard has two nice plays at first, too.
Good game… but would be better if the Mets were winning. (Sorry… couldn’t resist!!)
September 5th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
San Diego got a run off of Sabathia. Tied 1-1 in the 4th.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Wait… Does anyone know if Jimmy drove or got the bus today…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
I think Jimmy drives to the games in NY, wonder why?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
I’m a Mets fan an I think its been a great game… Props to the Phils tonight. *shrug*
September 5th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
I really want Myers to get a complete game…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
I have now noticed 2 Mets fans picking their noses.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Runshouse, it is a great game. And honestly, don’t sell Pelfrey short. The first run was unearned and Church almost robbed Dobbs’ homerun.
So Pelfrey did pitch very well also.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
I wondered the same thing about Jimmy in NY. I figure the only reason you wouldn’t take the bus on time with everyone else is to do something shady when no one else is around…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
TEN STRIKEOUTS!!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Ugh.. stop being friendly with each other
jk
September 5th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Now if the pitchers spot doesn’t bat this inning does Charlie let him start the 9th and finish it himself?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
What would you guys do…leave Myers or put Lidge?
I’d go with Myers. Shut those Mets dowN!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I think Lidge comes in.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Lol 125 responses since the beginning of the game. lol. myers is dealin leave him in
September 5th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Manny, my girlfriend lives in North Jersey. She has become a Phillies fan, but all of her friends and such are Mets, Yankees, Devils, Giants, and Rangers fans, so I’ve learned how to be friendly with them.
Plus, I have a lot of respect for good mature fans who love the overall game more then they love their team.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Jimmy took the Cash Cab.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I think if he doesn’t have to bat you let him go at murphy and make a statement, warm lidge up though.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Myers and the Phillies deserve all the credit tonight. They are certainly coming to Shea with a purpose and sending a message. If Myers pitches like this for the rest of September it’s hard to imagine the Phils not making the playoffs.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
SJ Mike, you missed the “jk” part in my message
September 5th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Manny, I saw saw it. Just more or less justifying.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Leave Myers in. Pull him if he puts a runner on.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Plus, Myers was a closer last season… let’s put that to work and let him finish the game
September 5th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
That Mets fan with the creepy Halloween baseball mask looked like the Mr. Hyde version of Mr. Met’s Dr. Jekyll.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
what up bitches
September 5th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Hey, has anyone here bought the “Boo?” shirt?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Mets, but I can totally respect being beat instead of losing. Myers hook was the shit tonight.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Yo are you guys all just sitting with the computer watching the game? Cause I am. Haha
September 5th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Oh man, I hate the suspense when Lidge comes out… He’s been perfect so far, and I can’t stop thinking if/when he will blow a save. It’s scary
September 5th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
I know, I hold my breath every time he comes in now.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Has Ruiz become Lidge’s cabana boy…?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Lidge is due for a heartbreak. Could it be tonight? I sure hope so.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Man that Murphy kid gave Lidge quite an at bat. One down.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Not tonight my friend… Not tonight
September 5th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I hate it when my hands start to sweat.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Suddenly I don’t like Hillary Swank anymore
September 5th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Oh man. Charrrrrlie…. You should’ve let Myers in!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Always gotta be interesting.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
hold your breath boys and girls
September 5th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
i had my hair dyed that color last year, looked like crap.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
There is too much on the line..
It’s either being 2 games behind or FOUR!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Lidge is not hitting the spots… I’m freaking out a bit
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
PHEW…. cmon Phils one more out!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
dang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bruntlett almost killed me
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Whew
September 5th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Oh sheesh, Bruntlett, almost gave me a heart attack there. 2 down. One more.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
WTF Lidge! there goes the shutout
September 5th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
YEA PHILLIES!!!! Good game! Lidge is killing me
September 5th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
dagg. i almost died
September 5th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
A shaky save
September 5th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Yeaaaaa!!!!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Now, sorry for being cocky, but let me quote myself:
# Manny Says:
September 5th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Watch Myers shut down the Mets
September 5th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Thank God. I can breath again…..until the next game.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Now Jimmy can have a nice relaxing drive back to the hotel.

Turning point…Dobbs 2 run shot.Oh well….I tip my Mets cap to Brett Myers for a good game.BTW….Is this the Same Brett Myers you wished dead and wanted released?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Dobbs sounds pretty smart.. for real
September 5th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
OOO YEAH!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Great win, but I feel it is just prolonging the inevitable misery. Myers was fantastic and the reason they won.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
whew… i seriously thought Brad was going to give up a run. what a nail biter
September 5th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Can’t see game. Someone help: describe bruntlett catch, and vic catch.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Where’s Mr Met?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
p.s. – Myers for the Ashburn!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
I love it. Shutout vs. the Mets? Are you kidding me? What a game. So boring to watch, but loved very second of it.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Great game. Jesus if Myers pitches like that all the time, he’s an easy Cy Young winner every year.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
to Grrrumpy Miner… this is NOT the same Brett Myers that we wanted hung. this is a new and improved Myers who is a dominating pitching monster. a totally different guy came back from the minors.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Kyle-Bruntlett was playing deep and had to run in hard and made a basket catch, Vic had to backpeddle and crashed into the wall.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
I love seeing Vic go nuts for Dobb’s HR. Vic s a huge piece to this team.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
This Brett Myers is pitching the best he has ever pitched in his career, which is what i dont understand. I knew that he was a good pitcher and wasnt as bad as he was in the 1st half. but damn 6-1 in the 2nd half with an era in the 1.50s
September 5th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
It’s really amazing to see someone turn it around like Myers has, and I loved that he was hugging all the other guys in the dugout after the 8th, show us the love, baby!
September 5th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
I have to admit, I said I never wanted to see Myers in a Phillies uniform ever again, thank god I’m an asshole.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
CT…believe it or else,It was the VERY SAME Brett Myers who pitched tonight.Just learned his lesson down in the minors that if you can’t cut it….down you go.I do tip my Mets cap to the Phils for a good game.I am glad the short, yellow bus, hockey helmet so called loudmouth Mets fans are in hiding.MAYBE some intellectual observations in here with fans who can make some common sense.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
It takes a big person to admit that, NEPA.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Thanks, Georgie. Hot damn Brett Myers! Is he pitching again tomorrow?
September 5th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Haha – I don’t want to see Adam Eaton in a Phils uniform again either, that’s probably a safer bet.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
You should be OK with that one.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Yeah, NEPA, you’re far better off with that wish.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
How boring was the game tonight? Tense, but boring.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
And Gagne comes in for the Brewers and gives up a run and is putting people on base.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I told you guys not to worry about the Mets…2 more to go baby! Anyone catch the note that Schmidt left on the Phillies clubhouse door? Good job, Lets go Phils
September 5th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Schimdt is an asshole, but whatever gets the Phils going I’m all all for.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Man, Mets fans are angry, angry people.

somebody should stab Victorino to death and hide his body behind the Left Field fence.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
My roommate is a diehard Met’s fan, and he hates Vic more than anyone. A.K.A, I love Vic more than anything.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Yeah, they’ve come to really hate him recently. Reading these comments on Metsblog though is somewhat amusing, but mostly disturbing. Like, on the Phils blogs, the fans’ negative comments tend to be more on the sarcastic and pessimistic side. The comments from these posters on Metsblog in regards to the Phillies players and us fans are just downright sedistic, disturbing, and full of violent anger.
And Phillies fans are supposed to the obnoxious ones?
September 5th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
This win was so big. God forbid if we win tomorrow. Eagles season opener and Phils going for the sweep, I’m getting nothing done Sunday if it happens.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
AWESOME WIN. outstanding performance by brett myers. outstanding.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
This game was boring in a good way, at no point did I think the Mets had a chance at winning, loved it.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
what a great statement win for the phils..but we cant forget what happened the last two series where phils won the first game but lost the last two. Moyer’s start tomorrow will be the definitive point in this phillies season. Also if we are to have a realistic shot at getting back in the playoffs, J-roll has got to get on base! Lets go phils!
September 5th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
I think the good thing with this win as opposed to the others was that the first win of all the past series’ were relatively dramatic and intense.
This was just an outright win from beginning to end. No daring come back. No walk off hit. No using half the bullpen.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Yea, I noticed that. We usually win the first game of the series very dramtaically then drop a few games . Not this time.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
myers can be their ace when he wants to be.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
Nice to see a win like this. But this team has a long way to go. Nothing less than a sweep is acceptable. If we split the next two games, advantage Mets.
Honestly, I don’t think this is the year. The Mets are better, as their standing in the division and their 10-6 record against us shows.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:06 am
It’s not “the year” for either of these teams. I’m just hoping they make the playoffs and get very hot, cuz then you never know what happens.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Smith, just want to point something out to you. IF, and i understand it’s an if, we win the next two games our record against the NL east would be identical to the Mets.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:08 am
That’s true. The playoffs is a crapshoot, as much as all the “experts” like to talk about post season this and post season that. ANYTHING can happen in the post season. But getting there is going to be tough. The problem is the immediate schedule after this series. If we leave still down 2 games, the mets play shitty teams for 12 days and we play good teams. Not good. And by the time the cubs go to shea, they will have already clinched and pinella will rest people.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:09 am
Pat – you make a good point. It’s a huge IF, but a good point. Interleague really killed us didnt it.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:10 am
NEPA~says..”How boring was the game tonight?” Huh? A pitchers’ duel is boring? As a fan of baseball, I enjoy all aspects of a game; a dominant performance of one or both pitchers where one mistake can proved costly or a hitting/fielding clinic displayed by both clubs. If tonight’s game of a most crucial series bores you, perhaps it’s best for you to stick with football and the “Eagles” this Sunday (chuckles).
September 6th, 2008 at 12:12 am
Smith, this whole season has been weird though. The Phils and the Mets have been so inconsistent. Nobody would have predicted we lose 2 games to the Nats while the Mets sweep the Brewers. After this series is over, the Phils need to focus on themselves only, just win games.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:14 am
I agree to some extent, NEPA, but the Mets have actually not been inconsistent lately. I mean, I just checked this – they are 48-28 over their last 76 games. That’s half a season of division-winning baseball.
We, on the other hand, are .500 since early June.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:17 am
Bruce, I said the whole time it was boring (in a sense), but in a good way.Very tense and riveting. Are you trying to start an argument or something?
September 6th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Agreed Smith, since Manuel has come on board they’ve been pretty impressive. But still, that bullpen is so weak I really can’t see them pulling away.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:21 am
THeir bullpen is messed up, that’s for damn sure. Although they are throwing names out there now that I’ve never seen before, which is probably a good thing for them.
In any case, it should be interesting.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:29 am
i cant believe im agreeing with bruce. a pitchers duel is THE best game to watch. from a psychological standpoint. to know that BOTH starterss are on top of their game is AWESOME to watch. especially on HDTV.
also, THIS is the type of pitching im talking about. BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR. of all people, with his HORRENDOUS first half of the season, brett myers shows up and throws down the gauntlet with 8 scoreless AND he has been an absolute BEAST since coming back. comeback player of the year, anybody? I think so.
whatever the AAA pitching coach told him, keep doing it brett.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:32 am
48-28… wow!
Now does anyone know how many of those losses were directly attributable to them blowing it for them? Could you imagine if they at least one competent reliever? That’s scary.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:33 am
NEPA~ No argument intended but your choice of the word “boring” conflicts with your other choices..”tense” and “riveting”. What “bores” you about tonight’s game?
September 6th, 2008 at 12:34 am
Geoff/Bruce, I said the whole night that it was boring but in a good way. There was no real action in the game, but I still loved every second of it (see my above post).
September 6th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Geoff, I know how negative you are at all times but did you really not think Myers would bring his A game? The guy thrived last year as a closer. Some guys just like being in this kind of situation and being clutch. He’s one of them.
September 6th, 2008 at 1:45 am
he wasnt bringing his A game ALL year until they sent him down. then somehting clicked, i suspect, he got away from rich dubee….its a remarkable change, it really is if he can hold it. he was worthless by the texas game, basically done. when that guy is on hes the ace, not hamels. but can he do that enough to be the ace? when we saw him come up all those years ago as a kid and light it up at wrigley field we thought hed be our ace for 15 years. now, hes struggled with the mental aspects of being consistently on top. it looks like, as a starter, hes started to figure it out finally. i hope he can be consistent. hes really special when hes on his game.
September 6th, 2008 at 1:46 am
By boring I meant no action. I was with a bunch of people tonight and most of them wanted to turn the game off because nothing was happening. I was hanging on every single pitch, but compared to other Phils/Mets games, this one was not as memorable.
September 6th, 2008 at 1:48 am
also, i think hamels will blow his arm out in two years. hell miss a year and a half when he does it. theyd better be prepared to deal with that when it happens. if they want to avoid that theyd work on his stamina in the offseason. he whimps out when he should train harder, and because of that, hamels isnt prepared to throw as many innings as someone like myers or even joe blanton (if he, you know, keeps that WHIP under control) over the course of a season. i think hes shown improved durability this year. however, he isnt getting a contract until he shows a full healthy year or TWO.
September 6th, 2008 at 1:54 am
To back up my point, how many people came in here tonight and called this the game of the year like the last Mets series? Zero. We all love a pitcher’s duel because there’s a lot of tension, but as far as the really classic games, this wasn’t one of them. Side note – go Moyer tomorrow, or Sunday.
September 6th, 2008 at 7:41 am
Can anyone find anywhere to see highlights of that ‘play’ in the field by Burrell?
September 6th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Geoff I thought you were kidding when you said you couldn’t stop typing. But after your stupid remarks about hamel I really think you just will say anything just to type. Get a life learn about the game then come on and talk sports. I figure you are very young maybe high school freshman fat losing your hair no girls and need a outlet. But try to learn something about sports so you don’t make a ass of yourself.
September 6th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Geoff. Hamels trains harder than maybe anybody in baseball from what i’ve heard. he does 500 sit ups every morning.
