Gamenight: Phillies (83-67) At Braves (67-83)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, September 16, 2008 06:00 PM
Headline: Phils look to keep momentum strong
The Major Players: Jamie Moyer, Chase Utley, Chad Durbin, James Parr, Chipper Jones, Blaine Boyer
The Venue: Turner Field, Atlanta, Ga.
The Number: 0.5 games behind (Mets) NL East; Tied in first (Brewers) Wild Card
After a tremendous four-game sweep of the Brewers, the Phillies will focus on the final 12 games of the year. Now everything is practically mapped out, and the goal is simple: Win more than the others. Jamie Moyer starts the work tonight against rookie James Parr.
The Parr Side: Parr has thrown 12 scoreless innings to begin his major league career. He carries a slider and chanegup with a pretty normal fastball; in other words, he’s the kind of pitcher the Phils struggle against.
Chopped: The Phillies have won their first six games in Atlanta this season. They’re the first team since the 1989 Padres to win six games in a row in Atlanta during one season. And this season the Phils are 10-2 against the Braves — two more wins will tie a franchise record for season wins.
Take The Lead: The Phillies are 57-20 when they score first. So it’s important to do that.
Ocho … Cinco: Small sample size be damned: Jayson Werth is a .345 hitter with a 1.231 OPS when hitting fifth. (He hit sixth during his three- and two-homer games this season.)
Phillies: Jamie Moyer (14-7) 3.68 ERA
Braves: James Parr (1-0) 0.00 ERA
Gametime: 7 p.m. EST
Weather: 73, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: Smuttynose Robust Porter is exactly that — robust. Good in easy sips, it’ll tingle your fancy and have you dreaming of spaceships. Or something. Whatever the case, it’s a good beer for tonight. Jamie Moyer needs to go deep and do his thing. The offense needs to hit the ball well and get some timely runs. Together, we can make a difference.
Go Phillies!

what’s the lineup?
September 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
The areas pretty much forgot Philly even has a baseball team since football season started…No wonder J-Roll calls everyone frontrunners.
September 16th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
This I thought was interesting:
September 16, 2008 W L GB Strk
Mets 83 66 – Lost 2
Phils 83 67 0.5 Won 4
September 16, 2007 W L GB Strk
Mets 83 65 – Lost 3
Phils 80 69 3.5 Won 4
It’s crazy how similar they are!!!
Go phils!
September 16th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
It’s true. I’m actually glad the Eagles lost last night. Perhaps people will forget about them for another week. Doubt it.
September 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Lineup has been up: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Moyer
September 16th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Jack, you don’t really mean that.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
How does that young pitcher from Atlanta look? Heard he’s pretty good.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
I am just glad baseball is still in the forefront in town. Philadelphia is such a great baseball town and I get sick of hearing about football when the Phillies are still in the pennant race!

Dude is tearing it up since the call up. Playing for a job in 2009.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
I couldn’t agree more, Bill
September 16th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I cannot stand the Eagles one bit, and the fans I cant either. Don’t worry though, the Packers will beat the Cowboys Sunday Night. And yes, there is a difference between Eagles fans and Phillies fans.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
I can’t stand football one bit. I think it is the worst sport ever made. I could care less about it.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I like the game of football in itself, but the chest beating and hotdogging of players and fans gets old pretty quick.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I like the Eagles, though Phillies have always been number 1 for me. But it is possible to like both the Eagles and Phillies at the same time. Last night I was in Eagles mode, rest of the week I’m in Phillies mode.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Yep, and in a few weeks the Flyers start, so if the Phils make post season, it’ll have to be triple mode!
September 16th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
I didn’t start enjoying football until mcnabb was drafted. My grandmom and dad were huge influences on my love for baseball and I didn’t really care about other sports teams.
I currently love the sixers because of AI getting me into them and I watch the eagles hoping they win but I am not totally devestated when they lose like most of the city.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Big hit, Utley.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
I used to love basketball more than anything but could care less for it now since it’s all thugs and shit in it now and the Knicks have been so terrible for so long. Now I just really focus on baseball.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
WERTH!!
September 16th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
YEAH WERTH!
September 16th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
J Wacko
September 16th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Phils are beating up on this rookie, taking him off the high horse now. Tough break kid.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Awwww yeah Werth! Also, sweet to see Parr hit 60 pitches before the end of the 3rd. The Nats look like they may make their game interesting too.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Phils are beating up on Parr
September 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Howard looks locked in
September 16th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Burrell’s looking lost again…
September 16th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Burrell is not locked in
September 16th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
That 50% comment is pretty dumb. 2 out of 4 means he didn’t try too often.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
haha, Howard needs to lose about 100 pounds and work on his base running. nice inning though Phils…
September 16th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Howard tagged out at home… close one there big guy
September 16th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Smith should’ve held Howard, but oh well. I guess it’s easy to gamble when you have a lead and are jumping on a young pitcher.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Why send Howard, he’s pretty slow and doesn’t Francoeur have a great arm?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Once Howard’s moving like that it’s probably rough for him to put on the brakes.
Oh boy, here comes the tomahawk chant.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
gah, J-Roll’s fielding today has not been up to snuff
September 16th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
They sent him home because the probability of scoring was higher than 30%. The probability of Feliz getting a hit (and hence Howard scoring) is only 25%.
I think it was a good call…
September 16th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
yikes!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Moyer looks tired, I know he supposedly pitches better when he’s tired, but how many more times can he do this?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
This is where Moyer’s experience makes a big diff.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Hey Manny–
How did you figure out those percentages?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
My head.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
sounds made up. what did you use to calculate that?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
3-1 and 3-2 changeups from Moyer, nasty.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Damn, big hit there by Kotchman.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Well… there were 2 outs in the first place.
What’s Feliz average? roughly ~.250 so that’s the 25%
And the “higher than 30%” I think it’s a good estimate for a big guy’s chance of scoring from 1st with a good double..a lot can go wrong in getting that ball in time at home plate.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
It’s time to get Moyer out the bullpen hasn’t pitched in few days and should be rested.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Moyer had a rough inning, but I still trust him here. I’ve never seen a pitcher who can adjust in innings after giving up runs like he can.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
BA doesn’t consider things like walks, errors, and wild pitches which could’ve scored howard. His odds of scoring are probably a little bit higher off of Feliz batting than just taking the straight BA.
not that I really know how you could figure that out, I’m just trying to distract myself from the phils blowing the lead
September 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
CHOOCH!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
YEA RUIZ!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Wow that was beautiful.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
And the catcher comes through.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Apparently Fernando Tatis just got injured in the Mets game. He was taken out of the game.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Yeah, Tatis dove for a ball and seemed to injure his shoulder.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
yeah, he’s not as strong now without the juice.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Nats up 1-0
September 16th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
how do you know he did steroids?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Griffin, talk about being an immature Phillies fan…
September 16th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
oh please, now all of a sudden you have a deep love for a steroid user you picked up off the scrap heap?
If you don’t want Phillies fans to make fun of your cheaters, don’t go into a Phillies blog.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Tyler, in fairness, there’s enough Mets fans on Metsblog who like to claim Ryan Howard is on steroids without any justification either.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Brewers already down 1-0 against the Cubs
September 16th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
oh, this just in: Fernando Tatis was on the Mitchell Report.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
It’s obvious that neither Tatis nor Howard are on steriod.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Ryan Howard on steroids HAHAHAHA. That is ridiculous. He is just a big ass dude like Frank Thomas is.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
The Mitchell Report was a bullshit report, I love how no one on the Red Sox were on that list. Very strange…
September 16th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Fernando Tatis wasn’t even on the Mitchell Report.
Go check for Tatis’ name, Griffin.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I just figure all of my favorite players have done steroids, that way I’m not disappointed in them when I find out I’m right
September 16th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Willie Harris practically just raped the Mets on that diving play.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
“Fernando Tatis sought by Mitchell investigators…” I’m sure they just wanted to invite him to a dinner party
September 16th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
That was a nice play by Willie Harris
September 16th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Ryan Howard has two brothers (one of them a twin), neither of whom play baseball, and both of them are bigger than he is. That’s a fairly well controlled proof that he is not using steroids.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Howard is definitely no steroid user that is for sure. I heard Moyer uses steroids and that’s how he’s been around for so long.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
And that’s how the rumors fly.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I heard the jamie moyer was the 2nd shooter at the grass knoll
September 16th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Pitchin’ around Ruiz… I love it!
September 16th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Yeah, it was roid rage.
September 16th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Go Cubbies (up 3-0, no outs, bottom of the third, runner on 2nd)! Dempster is having a nasty game.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Cubs just took a 3-0 lead.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
6 outs away for the Nationals go baby go!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
damn, I thought Norton struck out on that 1-2 pitch. oh well.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Just saw word that Tatis is out for season with separate shoulder…
September 16th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
nice play by howard
September 16th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Tough break this inning. Still, if you can keep it at 6-4, plenty of time to get them back.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
This is why Moyer needed to throw strikes. Bad performance tonight.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Not Moyer’s game. Our offense can get a few more runs in. I think this game will just depend on our bullpen.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
They really blew a chance if they lose tonight. If the Mets and Brewers both lose this is all on the Phils – particularly on gag-boy Durbin, who can’t be counted on for anything (and why wasn’t a lefty brought in there?), and the offense who has produced 10 hits and 1 walk yet only has 4 measly runs.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Why not a quicker hook for Moyer (day off yesterday, Myers CG on Sunday)? Why not go with Madson as opposed to Durbin who hasn’t gotten an out that mattered in what seems like a month?
September 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Tim – how about Manual using a lefty on Johnson? How about the offense stranding 7 runners thru 5? IT’s not just a bad performance from Moyer we are talking about here.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Hey kyle… it’s Manuel not Manual
September 16th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
agreed, plenty of blame to go around tonight
September 16th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
dammit
September 16th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
J-Roll is on the hook for at least two runs for failing to make a simple tag in the 3rd.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Well, no blaming yet. Down 3 runs, and got 3 innings to get them back.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Thanks for the spelling tip, but the point remains: this is a total gag job all around tonight: pitching, hitting and terrible managing.
A complete failure to capitalize on the Mets and Brewers (who still are closer than the Phils).
September 16th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Mets have 2 on, one out with Reyes up.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
The game isn’t over yet Kyle. We’ve come back from worse.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Nats got out of the inning. Bottom 8, still 1-0
September 16th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Of course the Nats got out of it….this is the Mets.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Good job with the triple, big man!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
HOWARD!!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
GO ATLANTA!!!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
woooooo! Howard is on fire!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Just missed going out. Pat has got to get out of this slump and drive him in to make it a one run game again.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Mets fan here…you guys are unreal. And I mean that in a good way…you’ll never lose this game tonight, while once the Nats scored 1, you knew we were done…
How does it feel to watch a team with guts?
September 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Pat has to make an out I agree!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Pat just hit the ball man!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
damn, Burell is so lost
September 16th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
He struck out AGAIN!!!
4th time..
please give him a day off
Today he’s been a HUGE reason why we haven’t scored as many runs as we should have….
He has destroyed the heart of our lineup today
September 16th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
wow, burrell.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Joe, I think the Mets have more in them then you guys are giving them credit for. It’s a one run game with the meat of your order coming up in the 9th.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
The Mets look just pathetic and watching this game makes me sick to my stomach. I wish the season ended today so I don’t have to watch this garbage anymore.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Wow, I just looked at the stats and it said Burrell’s avg. is .250? Is that right? He was hitting like .330 in the first half. What happen to him?
September 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Unfortunately, the “meat” of our order is more like tofu…
September 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Joel Hanrahananhan for the save
September 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Joe, I think its just a victim of playing teams in your own division. They know us better then anyone else and it’s more fun to play with spite and to be spoiler then if it were some other club.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I hope both teams make it. They both have a chance to make it. But both teams better start winning!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Joe, that was an awesome line.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
WTF Wright you non clutch bastard.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Let’s see if the prize acquisition of Matt Stairs pays off.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I think having both teams in the playoffs with the chance they might get a chance to face each other to see who goes to the world series would be the best!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Dame i think we might want to reconsider letting a lefty happ go tomorrow because the Braves destroyed Moyer tonight…IMO Cholly not knowing how to handle his pitchers as usual left him in too long.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
I hope the Mets don’t even make the playoffs. They are making me so sick. Wright is scum, guy can’t get a clutch hit if his life depended on it.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Now why would you PH Matt “Who Am I” Stairs when you have to put Coste in next inning anyway? Why Charlie, why?
September 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
This is the fight that the Phils seemed to be lacking every time they fell behind in the second half this year. Up until September that is
September 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
NATS win!!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
RiVLez, try to get a grip!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
yo whats the site to watch the phillies
September 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Mets lose. Top of the order then coming up in the 8th. Good situation.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Coste has been so good against the Braves all year I don’t think its a bad thing to put him in. Yeah Stairs blew it, but he was the best guy for the spot.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Jesus, what a golden opportunity wasted. They left 15 men yet? Just pathetic if they don’t take advantage of the Mets/Brewers could be losses.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Prince fielder HR. 3-2
September 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Kyle, there’s still 2 innings left with the top of the order. They got back within a run right away which is the most important for that inning.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
And don’t look now, but the Brew crew is rallying. 13 hits, 2 walks and 2 atlanta errors. That’s 11 men left on base. We got time though!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
There is no grip. Watching Odalis Perez of all people look like Sandy Koufax against the Mets. It’s disgusting. Can’t get a run against the Nats. Wright is the least clutch player I have ever seen, Schneider sucks. There is so many things that are pissing me off. I seriously don’t even care if they make the playoffs anymore.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
SJMike….see what I mean. Tofu, I tell ya….they look good in the first few innings and in stretches, but when September hits and the games get really big, the whole team plays scared. You know that look the Phils dugout gets when down 3 runs and you just know they’re going to come back late? Yeah, we don’t have that ability. Why am I venting on a Phillies blog? The Mets have made me batty. I need help.
And Wright will whisper in the postgame about how this is nothing like last September…..wonder if he actually believes that. Probably does because he is from the ARod school of clutch-ness.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Yes, maybe they should of had chavez hit for him so chavez could of went deep to the infield? Jackass!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Rivelz,
I am with ya. I was the one guy defending this sad team all year. I can’t tell ya how many times I uttered the phrase, “This team is different.” Oh boy, was I wrong.
BTW, rooting against the Phillies is almost like rooting for the Mets….losing causes on both sides.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Both NY third basemen are the least clutch players in all of history.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
I guess the Nats and Braves are trying to do everything they can to play spoiler.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Joe, I sympathize. Utley has had a knack this season for popping up and grounding out in the clutch situations also.
Wright is really young still, though, and it’s just growing pains of being an emerging star. I have no doubt (and it scares me) that he’ll be the next Chipper Jones of the NL East for you guys.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Joe, Wright does whisper when he talks, he reminds me of Tom Cruise, maybe he’s a Scientologist too.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I’ll trade ya Wright for Utley…..both of our annoyances solved!
September 16th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Joe tell me you aren’t just completely disgusted. It’s so terrible to watch these games. Pelfrey pitches his ass off and goes 7 innings with only 1 run given up and doesn’t get a win. They suck. It’s so pathetic that Castro and Cancel were the best hitters of the night.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Georgie,
Guarantee ya….”We had some good AB’s late. We are not pressing. Last year is in the past.”
All said with a whisper….
September 16th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
did anyone else see comcast sports net have the score listed at 7-7 for teh first part of the 8th inning. i was freaking out thinking i missed something
September 16th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
I swear if I was Jerry Manuel, I would beat every single one of those bastards with a belt.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Know what disgusts me? A few things….
A) That Julian Tavarez is pitching the 8th inning right now.
B) That I like this site so much more than the Mets blog.
C) That the Mets torture me year after year
D) That I am typing on a Phillies blog right now and the people reading most likely hate me for being here.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Alright – this is the top of the order thing I was hoping for. Er….Look, this really is a golden opportunity, especially with Happ going tomorrow.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
The best players sometimes seem like they are the least clutch, but that’s only because they’ve been playing all season to get you into contention. Wright is a great third baseman, without him the Mets wouldn’t even be in it.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Man i just noticed Pat the bats struck out 4 times in 4 AB…Who ever wants to resign Pat are you finally having 2nd thoughts?
September 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
damn, I got excited for a sec there
September 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Utley almost got it out of the park…
September 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Joe, I don’t mind you being here, because you’re being civil. I don’t mind Mets fans who come to talk baseball.
We just hate the jackholes who come here to talk smack.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
OH UTLEY
he needed that so bad
September 16th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Pathetic top of the 8th for Philly. And with Julian pitching no less.

What’s the magic number now?
This from MetsBlog.com, this was my highlight of my night. HAHAHA.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Warning track power does no good.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Yea, both side of the rivalry have the moron fans who can’t be civil. I am of the belief that you root for your team and leave the other fans alone when the lose….unfortunately, most think that is a bad thing.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
It is funny to hear Harry start his “long drive” homerun call and then when it’s caught at the warning track how much it deflates him.
I really thought Utley’s ball had a good chance. I guess the wind there is really bad tonight in right.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
..and Wright whispers “no Jerry, please not the belt”.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Who is the writer and owner of this site? It is real nice.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Please Howard get an RBI or a HR…
September 16th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Tim Malcom runs this site.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Manny, I think Howard’s only shot is opposite field. Based off of Utley’s ball, anything he hits to rigth will probably die.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I concur, SJ
September 16th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Howard against a lefty. yikes.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
This Gonzalez is a real clown…watch him dance…
September 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
DID I CALL IT!!!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
OH MY GOD!!!
HOWARD
MVP!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOOMGOMGMO!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

September 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
YESSSS!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
I’m eating my words, yes baby!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
The big man is on friggin FIRE!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Holy crap! He’s really gonna kick ass at the arbitration table this year, isn’t he?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Give Howard a cookie when Burrell is batting behind him? WOOOOOO!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I’m out. Good night guys. Good luck. You guys should be able to hang on this game.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Wow….like I said….you’ll never lose this game. Hope Wright was watchin that one in the clubhouse…that is how a big-time player gets a big-time hit. Nice work. You guys deserve it. We don’t. Simple as that…
September 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
props to Howard, he IS on fire. Six more outs and we’re in 1st place!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
What a night for Howard!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
W-O-W. What a freakin September.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
trade him. if we would’ve packaged him up earlier in the season for an ace, we would have at least 90 wins right now. oh well.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Let it not be said that I didn’t come here to take my lumps after delivering a few of my own the last couple of weeks.
Nothing’s final… but I gotta give the Phillies credit for getting themselves righted.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Tim,
Great site. Mets fan here, but this site is bad@ss.
Enoy the win fellas as I toss and turn all night b/c of my gutless franchise.
Later
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Joe, that is very sportsman like of you.
I’m very glad this also gets Jamie Moyer off the hook. He has been so good for us this year and has really been the unsung hero. The guy deserves to be off the hook. He didn’t have a good game, but this season he has been all around spectacular.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
LOL 5 strike outs for Burrel YES!!!!!!!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Man or Machine?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
I forbid the use of a ‘magic number’ watch on this site. My administrative power is usually garnered for behind the scenes aspects of philliesnation.com. But, I draw the line at declaring the season over with a half game lead. After all, this is the phillies.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
So….4 strikeouts is the Golden Sombrero. What the hell did Burrell just get with his fifth whiff of the night?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
The big comes through again…Now please don’t blow it bullpen.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Just think, if strikeouts counted as hits Burrell would be 5-5, wow
September 16th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
By the way, did anyone hear Braves fans singing “nah nah nah, hey hey, goodbye” not long before Howard came up?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Thanks for the props, Joe.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
5Ks=Platinum Bowler?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
braves fans do not know the game of baseball.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Rob, agreed man. Plus, there is no sense in posting a magic number when it pretty much equals the number of games you have left in the season.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Good idea tim, pass on holliday and resign burell. The guy plays for one half year every year and the other half of the time he completely sucks. im not for trading for holliday but get burell that head case outta here!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Titanium somberero
September 16th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
why in god’s name is adam eaton warming up?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I just had to post this from Metsblog.com HAHAHA
Comment by WrightsRight
2008-09-16 21:54:34
i have zero confidence in the braves holding a lead to the ‘27 Yankees, er, I mean the ‘08 Phillies.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Yes Rob, I agree, no magic numbers on here please.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Great 2 innings by Madson. He look unusually poised on the mound for the 7th and 8th
September 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Props to Madson…he’s been stepping up lately.
He should also stay for ‘09
September 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
nicely done Madson
September 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Phenomenal job by Madson.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
RiVLez, I have been reading the “sky is falling” posts on Metsblog. I post on there (not often) as MrDudeAndStuff. There are good fans on that site, but there are a lot of dramatic people who go way overboard very quickly.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
An insurance run or 2 would be nice.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
SJ Mike: You can’t tell me that wasn’t funny though.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
RiVLez, don’t get me wrong, they are amusing. I guess from my perspective as an opposing fan, it’d be just bad karma to kick opposing fans when they’re down.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Plus, I have a girlfriend from North Jersey, so she’s tamed me into being a more civil to the opposing fanbase.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
I’m friggin DYING here because I can’t watch these games. I have to settle for listening to the ones that aren’t on “myP2P” on Gameday audio. This late in the season, I’d rather sit in the dentist chair looking at all the drills and junk than to just listen to these games. If I don’t get a satellite soon, someone is going to get hurt.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
SJ Mike – I’ve got to hand it to you. Well done, sir.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
SJ, I always feel like if I bust on their fans it will somehow come back to bite me in the ass.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Exactly. Plus, we are well groomed Philly fans. We have all learned by now that you cannot celebrate until it is officially over.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
You guys called me an idiot for saying Howard had a chance at MVP about a month ago, an idiot for saying the season wasnt over until september was, an idiot for being optimistic. Who’s the idiot now? Dont ever quit on your team again.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Soriano solo 4-2 bottom 7
September 16th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I forgot that geoff jenkins existed
September 16th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I don’t think the Mets are remotely done yet, which is why I find so many of their fans throwing in the towel confusing. Wildcard or Division, I think the Mets will make it into the playoffs. The Brewers are just a wreck right now and Houston lost to Florida 5-1. So the Wildcard may be more wide open to the NL East then we initially thought.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I want to see the Phillies and Mets in the post season! Going against each other in the division series! That would be WILD!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I agree SJ Mike, brewers are just a mess right now.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
PS, we can’t face each other in the division series. The only way we’d match up would be in the NLCS. They won’t set teams in the same division against each other in the divisional round.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
What’s with the Mets fans jumping ship so quickly?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
the Phillies and mets can’t play in the 1st round of the playoffs. The NL east winner will play the Dodgers and the wild card will play the Cubs.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Fielder hit another Homerun, making Soriano’s solo shot bigger. 4-3 in the 8th.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
If the Phillies beat the Mets for the Division I will change my name to Phillies #1.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Everytime “perfect” Lidge comes out, the thought of him blowing his first save crosses my mind
September 16th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
crap, Prince Fielder just hit another homer 4-3 top 8
September 16th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
will this be the night that lidge surprisingly lets us down!??! i’m nervous for some reason.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
I’d prefer to go up against the Cubs over the Dodgers.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Evan,
If you watched LAST September and then watched the last 4 days, you would be VERY skeptical as well. I mean, think about it….17 games to go and we collapsed and now 17 games were left and the collapse began again. And all the the while, the team denies it ever happened and refuses to face it head on. I wouldn’t be so down on them if they were busting it out there and acknowledging how they owe the fans a different ending this season, but they are just too soft for that.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Man i hope Lidge isn’t ready for his first blown save tonight…We all remember the Grand Slam he gave up to McCann at CBP.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
We learned from our Cubs series that they are very beatable. The Cubs scare me far less then the Dodgers do for some reason.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I think NY fans in general are less loyal to their teams. The Yankees and Mets trade/pick up players like they are just pieces of meat, doesn’t make for a loyal fan base, imo.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
*crosses fingers*
September 16th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
You walk Chipper on 4 pitches to face McCann?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
No jumping ship here. I just have to say it, the Mets are a good team but the Phillies just scare the sh*t out of me! Every time we are in front the Phillies are right behind us. They are a good team that can be hot or cold but are always neck to neck with the Mets!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Chase had the right idea in mind, just the umpire didn’t fall for it.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Lidge is way too wild right now… I wonder if he’s nervous without Ruiz catching for him?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
haha i was yelling at the tv for him to do that
September 16th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Georgie, its not that we are not loyal we are too loyal we want the team to be the best and NY fans expect nothing less. And I am pretty sure that Phillies fans would not be upset if there GM went out and made a bunch off moves to make thier team better so they have a chance to win a world series!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
God we need this last out.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
The Braves are so patient with Lidge right now. They’re not swinging at his slider.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
If Francoeur beats us we should just shut the season down right now.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Coste doesn’t catch Lidge often, does he?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Yeah the Braves hitters are really making Lidge throw strikes. I’m nervous!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Lidge is just not comfortable with Coste, it seems.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
AHHHHHHHHHHH~!!!!!!!!!!~
September 16th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I have no nails right now
September 16th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
………….
September 16th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
For crying out loud…..just END IT!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
HOLY SHIT…this is too much
September 16th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
i have a very bad feeling about this…
September 16th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Man this is getting ugly.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
i’m worried my fear is coming to a reality
September 16th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
im dyin right now, he’s making this way too nerve racking.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
WOW, NOT GOOD!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Give props to these Braves hitters. They’re not biting.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
WHEN DID BILLY WAGNER START PITCHING FOR THE PHILLIES?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Just the fact that Lidge does so well with Ruiz is reason enough to keep him around.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
0-2
September 16th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Wow, that umpire completely blew that call.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
1-2
September 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
YES YES YES
September 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
LIDGE!!!!!!!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
2-2
September 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
YES! Huge win.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Wow, that was closer then it should’ve been. Major props to Atlanta though for not offering at those sliders.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
WE WON!!!
TOP OF NL EAST !
WOWWW
nearly had a heart attack
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
YEA BABY GAME OVER!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
WHEW!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
YEAH!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Whew. No sweat.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
damn, how does he keep getting out of those situations? thats amazing.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Exactly the difference between the Phils and my sorry squad….even without his best stuff, Lidge dug deep and got the job done. Takes guts. At least you guys put me out of my misery earlier than the last day of the season this year…
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
YES!!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Nothing like a nice easy finish to put everyone in a relaxed mood before going to bed.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
haha godly
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
A lot of Lidge’s game is people swinging when he throws slop, which allows his fastball to go by. Atlanta didn’t bite and then he pressed. But he does do a good job at getting out of jams.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Them Braves it seems like always have Lidges number, thats not the first time he’s stuggled against them.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Nice win!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
If the Cubs can hold on that means the Mets, Brew Crew, and the Astros all lose and the Phils win. Unbelievable.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
First place!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
unbelievable.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Hey, tim…quick question for you. Is there any way the site can be auto-refreshed after someone’s post? Every once in a while I forget to hit the refresh button and then I have like 50 posts to read.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
LET THE FLIP FLOPPING FOR 1ST PLACE BETWEEN THE PHILLIES AND METS BEGIN!
September 16th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
meanwhile, the mets hacked away another 3 game lead too. brewers lose again and they might be in a tailspin.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Oh man what a perfect day….
Cubs just scored and beating the Brews 5-3
September 16th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
5-3 cubs
September 16th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
nobody else wants to win this division/wc either! time to take advantage of ANOTHER opportunity this time for good.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
First place is nice, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We have to now hold onto it. We’re throwing Happ out tomorrow while the Mets are throwing Knight. Need to keep the momentum going.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Today will be the last day for you to worry about the Brewers….haha
September 16th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Man..its unbelievable…. Lidge for president….
September 16th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
well…ill be happy until tommrow night….lets go HAPP
September 16th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Geoff, do I hear a bit of optimism in your posts?
September 16th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
No Richie, Obama for president
Lidge for MVP haha
September 16th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
ever since i said ryan howards numbers were a fraud a few weeks ago hes gone completely ape shit at the plate.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Geoff is optomistic depite himself ..how could you not feel great tonight…
September 16th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
howard isn’t playing on a human level. he has literally turned into a god.
September 16th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
another great night for the phillies…good night all, happ has gotta play good tommrow
September 16th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
un-be-liev-able
September 16th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
To kyle who declared the game lost, I say TOLD YOU! Never count this team out until they are out!
This was easily the most stomach turning game I have seen in a while and something tells me there are more to come. Lidge’s 37th save was vintage Mitch Williams. But he found a way to get out of it!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Brew Crew have the tying run on 2nd with 2 outs in the 9th.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
If Lidge went to 3and 2 on that last batter..I was ready to call 911…coronary time..
September 16th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Goeff, still want to trade Howard?
Well done Phils!!!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Was that game a roller coaster ride or what? That was the 2nd best game of the year (behind the comeback win against the Mets). At this point Howard is crushing competition for the MVP, meanwhile Burrell needs to sit out a few games, and put Werth in LF, and Dobbs in RF, and use Burrell in pinch hit sitiations.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Cubs win!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Phils win
Mets lose
Brewers lose
Astros lose
Enjoy everyone, speak to you tomorrow!!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Phillies, Mets and Brewers games were all 1-run games… I loving September.
WHAT A PERFECT NIGHT!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
September baseball is exciting, no doubt, but makes me too damn nervous. I’ll be much happier when it is either A) clinched or B) October baseball.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
why single me out? everyone in the city has said that at one time or another.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Not me. I can honestly/proudly say that. I’ve been behind the big man all season.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Only because you’ve posted it on here dozens and dozens of times.
Just ribbin’ ya… Go Phils!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
How sweet it is! First place, but not without adventure. But Burrell, 5 ABs, 5 SO — perhaps its time to ride the bench for a game or 2.
Moyer was due for an off-night, but the offense didn’t quite. Howard at 4-5 with the decisive homer. Maybe he’ll miss getting 200 strikeouts.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Oh, and just wanted to give a little love to Madsen. He pitched very well tonight.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
sure, you all have, just maybe not on here. his nadir this season was worse than before. people were pissed..
it makes no sense to trade him if hes under team control for a while longer and playing well and youre not going to get a young ace under team control for him…
September 16th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Mad dog was great. Durbin on the other hand….i think he might be done.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Geoff has a point, when Howard was striking out 3-4 times a game, alot of people had him out of here, and now are doing the same thing with Burrell.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:01 am
Burrell isn’t in howard’s league as a clutch hitter. This is going to be interesting, I really am starting to believe the phillies let howard walk . It will be the biggest mutiny in history. the fans won’t let them get away with it.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:38 am
i remember earlier this year when the majority of the people on here wanted to trade howard. i told them to be patient and guaranteed that his numbers would be atleast .250 , 45, 130. he’s doing even better than that.
