Hanna’s Impact Will Disrupt Rotation
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, September 06, 2008 01:55 PM
While it’s likely the Phillies will stay with Jamie Moyer and Cole Hamels for tomorrow’s day-night doubleheader at Shea, there’s no telling what the rotation will look like afterward, according to David Murphy.
Currently, Joe Blanton is set to pitch Monday against the Marlins, getting four days of rest. But expect either Kyle Kendrick or JA Happ to start Tuesday, since Brett Myers would only have three days of rest. Wednesday’s starter would be Myers, but Thursday, the Phils would have to go back to either Kendrick or Happ. Jamie Moyer, starting Sunday afternoon, would have three days of rest.
While pitching coach Rich Dubee hasn’t made any decisions past Monday, here’s the projected setup, through the Brewers series:
Sunday (2:15 p.m.): Jamie Moyer vs. Pedro Martinez (NYM)
Sunday (8 p.m.): Cole Hamels vs. Johan Santana (NYM)
Monday (7:05 p.m.): Joe Blanton vs. Anibal Sanchez (FLA)
Tuesday (7:05 p.m.): Kyle Kendrick/JA Happ vs. Chris Volstad (FLA)
Wednesday (4:05 p.m.): Brett Myers [4-days rest] vs. Ricky Nolasco (FLA)
Thursday (7:05 p.m.): Kyle Kendrick/JA Happ vs. Ben Sheets (MIL)
Friday (7:05 p.m.): Jamie Moyer [4-days rest] vs. Manny Parra (MIL)
Saturday (3:55 p.m.): Cole Hamels [5-days rest] vs. Dave Bush (MIL)
Sunday (1:05 p.m.): Joe Blanton [5-days rest] vs. Jeff Suppan (MIL)
Currently the Phillies would avoid Brewers ace CC Sabathia, unless they decide to push him up a day (they may not, considering Sabathia would be lined up to open a series against the Cubs).

looks like we are going to screw up Happ a la Myers by switching him back & forth
September 6th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Looks like Brett Myers will be beating his wife instead of pitching on Tuesday.

id love to see carrasco get one of those happ/kendrick starts. i’ve had my fill of kendrick this year.
September 6th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
you CANT send moyer out there on 4 days rest against the brewers, thats literally forfeiting a game. must put whichever of kendrick/happ doesntt start prior to that in that slot. or carrasco.

How about Durbin for a spot start? Although Eaton’s available…
September 6th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Anyone know if the game that was supposed to be on FOX today will be on the CW tomorrow?
September 6th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Nevermind i scrolled down on the front page and seen it will be on there tomorrow.
September 6th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
they have an abundance of starters, finding someone to pitch shouldn’t be a problem. give happ a shot, and try to avoid using eaton at all cost.
i don’t think they can throw durbin out there after he has been used in relief all year.
September 6th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Fred, Chad Durbin is not stretched out enough to spot start. He could only go 3 or maybe 4, although I doubt it. It takes several weeks to stretch out a pitcher to throw 80 or 100 pitches when they’re used to only throwing 20 or 30 at a time. And no, Eaton is not an option. I’d rather go with Happ, Kendrick, or Carrasco.
September 6th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Im suprised anybody would mention Eaton as a possible anything…he has been terrible both int he bigs and in the minors this year
September 6th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Fred you are kidding ….right?
September 6th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Why wasn’t Carrasco or Carpenter called up instead of a has been like Les Walrond??
the Phils FO/GM are soooo shortsighted.
September 6th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Whynot give myers the ball against sheets? myers can beat sheets. have kendrick and happ go back to back and myers get 5 days rest?

Guys don’t get so angry about the call-ups like they will masively impact the season in a magical way. Fred Durbin spot starting are you kidding? The bullpen’s having enough trouble to sustain a consistent 8 inning guy without removing him from the role to go 4/5 innings. The mix up in the rotation is positive, Happ’s more likely to get a spot start here where the Kendrick/Happ decision has to be made and maybe upseting the schedule might re-focus a couple of the guys.
As for the call-ups on the pitching side, Although I do believe Carrasco would benefit from warming the big league bench we know whether we like it or not the FO has a plan for him, their not just leaving him of the roster to piss you guys off. And Walrond, ridicule all you want but when we need Condrey or really need Seanez to not implode in middle relief well then you’ll be happy to have Walrond and Eaton there to pitch some irrelevant innings so the arms really in the pennant race don’t have to. Plus Walrond, Tracey with the bat… Both have big-league experience and now’s not the time to mollycoddle AA guys who’ve still got a way to go.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Why must there be a specific ‘eighth inning guy’? A designated left-hander only guy? This is baseball. Everybody’s always trying to put a scientific spin to it. Put Durbin in for 4 or 5 innings. Outside of Hamels or Myers that’s all any of the pitchers last anyway.
You’ve got to be kidding if you consider Tracy a valuable bat off the bench. Sure he’s got big league experience (.238 avg) but he also has 13 years of minor ball experience. Why? Because he isn’t any good.
Yes, I was kidding about starting Eaton. But he still could be valuable eating some innings out of the pen.

What does everybody think of this. Since yesterdays game was obviously postponed until today, would you switch the pitching matchups for the DH? Other than missing a marquee pitching matchup for ESPN, would it be wise for the phils to pitch Hamels this afternoon and move Moyer to tonights game vs Santana? Does anyone think that this would benefit the phils by having a better chance to snatch the first 2 games of the series and go into tonights game with a better opportunity to sweep? Just a thought. I would be interested in hearing phils fans views.

Why must there be an 8th inning guy? Well the problem is we don’t have a real 8th inning guy so the Durbin/Madson/Romero set-up trio have to be on hand to match-up against the hitters due up. You take Durbin out of the pen for a start and you heavily weaken the pen for no gain, at this point in the year with teh wear on his arm Durbin serves no value as a starter and there are alternatives for an emergency spot start. Happ is the spot starter and although I don’t believe he has the make-up to make more than a handful or starts at a time he has upside. Moyer is having a great year and Blanton is suffering from being misused which we knew would happen when Gillick traded for him and allowed him being slotted in as a frontline starter. What do we gain from spot starting Durbin for 4/5 innings (considering the loss in the pen) that another guy couldn’t do?
As for Tracey 13 years of minor league experience is a hell of an achievement, most older AAA guys that aren’t on the big league radar find it very hard to sustain their careers while almost everyone around them is being dropped for a prospect. Remember the AB he had a couple of weeks ago? If that was a inexperienced prospect that was probably an out and not what could have been an imporant walk. How many times this year has Charlie been caught short having to use the wrong guy off the bench in an crucial at-bat? I’m pretty happy with Tracey at the plate in a pressure situation than Ruiz or Golson as a guy who’s consisently hit the ball all year. Every pressure at this time of year is at a premuim and whether the guy is up for one at bat or a dozen he rightly comes off the bench before an inconsistent bat.
As for Eaton and Walrond they do have value, your wholy right when you say Eaton has value because every inning Condrey, Eyre, Seanez doesn’t have to pitch could pay divident in the final games when there the core guys have to pitch with their arm hurting.

DD nice thought as Moyer pitches better at night but Hamels sparkles. It’s clear the Phils are going to try and make a statement in game 3 to either sweep or take the rubber match.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:20 am
I like that idea. Try to get the first two in the books. But if the Phils were to lose the first game with Hamels pitching then it wouldn’t look very promising heading into the nightcap.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:28 am
It’s going to be interesting to see how the bullpens feature in both games. If we can get to the Mets pen early in game 1 then there’s a lot of pressure on Santana to go deep and keep his pitchcount down in game 2 and the lower the count should mean the more balls around the zone.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Do you really want to waste Hamels against Pedro? Wouldn’t you rather have Hamels match up against Santana?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I think if you look AAA is full of Tracy types. (Tracy has 95 SOs in 138 ABs in the bigs.) Besides isn’t that why they got Stairs? Although I’m not very keen on Stairs either. Since we called up Golson and Marson why not give these guys some at-bats.
Again I think relief pitching philosophy hasn’t gone way too techno. I believe Manuel has fallen into this thinking pattern also. Aren’t we sometimes out-thinking ourselves?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:36 am
It’s such a tough call in a double header, would make more sense for the teams to match-up the aces in game and leave the bullpens to fight it out in game 2 but the late games a statement maker and plus the early game in a double headers always handled like a distraction, Moyer pitches pretty well when the other teams not as focused at the plate.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:39 am
I would rather get the first game – if that means Hamels is our best chance then I throw Hamels.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:47 am
I understand the thought of “wasting” Hamels vs Pedro but at this time of the year, the next game is the most important game and we need to win as many games as possible to get to the postseason. We cannot sweep without winning game 2 of the series. IF we would win game 2, we go into game 3 with confidence and swagger against their ace and put some pressure on them to have to win one. IF we lose game 2, we now really have put pressure on ourselves to have to win game 3 against their ace, realizing that we also have our ace going. With the rainout, we just have the option of controlling our matchups to maximize our chances. ESPN and many fans would be disappointed in not seeing the ace matchup but ultimately, we need to win this series and tighten it up.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Why won’t the Mets be focused in game 1? They surely don’t want to lose the first two. Additionally, it doesn’t matter who we throw in game 2 we still have to produce offensively against Santana. I say throw Hamels in game 1 and go for the sweep.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:50 am
I agree Charlie especially out-thinks the game and I think that cripples him and the confidence of some of the players at times.
AAA is littered with journeyman but it’s increasingly hard for the older guys who haven’t been up in years with teams willingness to call-up underdeveloped prospects forcing more major league journey back into AAA and their the guys on the radar as well as the prospects, so that means there’s really only a couple of guys on the roster who are journeyman minor leaguers who aren’t having their roles heavily reduced to accomodate the development of a prospect or experimenting with a failing major leaguer. I’m not saying Tracey’s Orlando Palmiero but when Dobbs/Stairs/Iguchi/Taguchi aren’t available I like the guy who’s hitting in close games. Golson and Marson might get some ABs but their going to have to earn some ABs in already decided, maybe you throw Golson in to try and spark something if a pinch-hitter comes with the bases empty or man on first when a pinch hitters needed in the 4th or 5th but when it matters I like the experienced guy. It’s not fair to call on Tracey’s K rate when he was a part-time major league because he’s been down for years and is a better hitter for it.
If Tracey or even Golson or Marson comes in in a clutch AB in tight game believe me Stairs will have already been used.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:53 am
What I meant was in double-headers teams never play like it’s a regular game and it’s never managed like it’s a regular game. There’s almost always an uncomfortable tension with every match-up being handled worrying about how it will impact game 2. Most Managers seem to get jumpy in double-headers and the players play differently when they know their going to be lifted and the pressures really on the bullpen.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:00 am
The IronPigs had eight players over 32 on their roster this season. That’s a third of the team was made up of AAA lifers. I still don’t understand your reasoning that a .238 lifetime minor leaguer with a 69% strikeout rate is a positive pinch hitter in a tight pennant race.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:23 am
When are you getting your stats from? His minor league average is .268 with a .362 OBP and has been around the 20/70 mark the past 3 years with a pretty OK walk to K rate. His ability to get on base drops when he’s hitting for the fences but not to far from a .300 hitter when his power numbers are down. Granted he’s not a major league calibre everyday or even part time player but he has a body of work to prove he can hit and showed he’s willing to take a walk in what might have been his final major league AB which a prospect wouldn’t do. Tracey’s a long way removed from his days as a free swinging prospect and I’ll trust a guy who’s hitting the ball consistently and with a team attitude over a prospect excited to over-excited to make an impact.
All that said the Iron Pigs fielded a poor team this year and developmens sake they need to be better, otherwise we’ll have to keep sending un-seasoned prospects straight from AA rather than risk spending time on one of the worst teams in AAA.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:24 am
^his major league average is .224 btw and his numbers show he’s far removed from those numbers, he fits the mould of a good secondary pinch hitter pretty well.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Sorry to mega post but I just need to clarify, I really like our prospects but their not Jacoby Ellsbury or K-Rod of times past. There’s going to be a witchunt if their put out there too early and their development gets stunted and Golson is a prime candidate for that. Conservative I know, but around guys like Howard, Feliz, Dobbs who are free swingers I don’t trust the kids aren’t going to try to impress everyone and press right from the get-go.
I really like Marson but I’d be more concerned with seeing him and Carrasco learn by watching and being around and even hungrier to go out show their major league ready in ST.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I guess we’ll agree to disagree. I still think the Phils need to get the first one today at all costs.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Completely agree with you there Fred, we can’t afford to drop 2 and moreover we cannot afford play another 2 bad games in a season of bad games.
I’m comfertable with Moyer in game 1 and will be interesting to see how Charlie manages the game but as most games now (and am sure you’ll say the same) am a little nervous our hitting is going to fold against Santana and it wont matter who we have pitching.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:57 am
anyone know if the first game today is on tv?
