Myers, Moyer Get Game 2, 3 Starts

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, September 29, 2008 04:59 PM

Todd Zolecki reports Brett Myers will start game two of the NLDS, while Jamie Moyer will start game three in Milwaukee.

Pretty much what we expected, and a good choice. I love Moyer starting a crucial game in the road ballpark, with Myers getting the home crowd going nuts, very likely opposing CC Sabathia. Who wants to bet Myers comes out firing in this one?

When things get hot, Myers either catches fire or melts. We won’t know until Thursday night.
I love that Hamels doesn’t have to pitch opposite Sabathia, a situation in which he’d likely have a good start but still lose. Moyer is a rock. What else can you say?

  2. Manny Says:

I just realized that the Phillies are the best team on the road in the National League. Go Moyer and Blanton!

  3. Gabriel Says:

can we just fire dubee? i’d love to have jaime moyer as a player/manager… he better be our pitching coach for a long long time… i mean he already kinda is, but he’s so reliable on that mound, and he can even do it on short notice! what a champ.. clearly one of our unsung heroes that doesn’t get the attention that our younger stars recieve. brett the rockstar myers is talkin like he knows whats going on in that pyscho melon of his… which is a good thing. i still say we can hit CC. our guys are monsters on a mission and i for one, cant wait.

  4. Manny Says:

That Saturday game in which we clinched proved to be pretty important. Had we clinched yesterday (Sunday), Hamels would have probably been slated for Game 2, on short-rest AND against Sabathia. I agree with Jeffrey –I’d hate to see us waste a strong Hamels effort. With Myers against Sabathia, on the other hand, we could either lose that game (which would be the expected thing against CC) UNLESS Myers steps up and beats him in an exceptionally strong second-half-type start. It is very possible.

Winning Game 1 is key, though. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with the starting rotation and the match-ups against the Brewers.

Just saw that Gallardo could get the game 1 start, but it won’t be announced until tomorrow after the Brewers work out in Philly. (Via AP)

  6. NJ Says:

Their going to need to pitch at least 2 games with either Bush, Suppan or Parra and a weak bullpen unless they try and 2 start Gallardo on short rest… The bats have to be feeling real good about their chances.

  7. Griffin Says:

ESPN is reporting that Gallardo may start game 1.

  8. Rory Says:

Brewers rotation is in shambles with Sheets out..I hate Suppan and Bush, and wouldn’t rely on Parra in his first postseason appearance, especially if it comes on the road.

I like our chances..Here’s an article I just wrote detailing the weird feeling I’ve had since we’ve clinched a playoff berth:

  9. Tim Malcolm Says:

I gotta say, I’m a little uneasy about Gallardo. The kid can throw. If he’s on in game one … shoot.

  10. Ryan Says:

Gallardo is coming off that extensive injury…I think we can take it in 4..Only if we win game 1 or game 2

  11. Kyle Says:

Bring on Gallardo – Come on, they were never going to throw that awful excuse for a pitcher Jeff suppan.

  12. Kyle Says:

As Keith Law of ESPN points out, this is no Pittsburgh Pirate lineup he’ll be facing.

  13. NEPA Says:

Wouldn’t Gallardo be on a very limited pitch count? Which means getting to that terrible bullpen quicker.

  14. Kyle Says:

Ya, probably (at maximum) a 6 inning guy.

  15. NEPA Says:

I can’t wait for the first time Gagne steps in. Our offense better pound the ball off that trash.

  16. Chris.I Says:

I just saw on Phillies.com that Gallardo is scheduled to pitch wednsday, and Tim your right…I watched him hose down Florida the one game. He is definitly a flame thrower, and jumps right at you in the count. I’m a little uneasy about this kid too. We just need to be patient with this kid, and make him throw to us. It’s the only way we’ll win game 1.
