Nats Slam Kendrick, Phils

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, September 02, 2008 10:11 AM

While Phillies Nation partied at Nationals Park, Kyle Kendrick was sliced and diced in a 7-4 loss to the Nationals Monday, dropping the Phillies to two games behind the victorious Mets for the NL East lead.

Kendrick was bad from the beginning, giving up two quick runs in the first inning. Then he was roughed in the fourth with everything but the kitchen sink. After four the Nats were leading 6-0.

The Phillies offense did little to help out, at least early. Tim Redding was tossing a no hitter until a Shane Victorino base hit in the sixth inning. The floodgates opened a little after that, with the Phils scoring three on a slew of walks and a Ryan Howard double. But besides that double, there was no clutch hitting — the Phils left 11 men on base.

Still, Kendrick has to pitch better. After the game, Rich Dubee explained Kendrick’s problem (via Jim Salisbury):

“It’s like bad stuff is going to happen, and generally if you have that bad look, bad stuff is going to happen. He’s got to get a better look about himself. He’s got to get more confidence.”

There are 24 games left in a pennant-chase season. If this is how Kendrick is faring, it’s time to take him out of the rotation.

JA Happ, Clay Condrey and Rudy Seanez cleaned up the mess and limited the Nats to one run in the final four innings. Jimmy Rollins hit a pretty needless home run in the top of the ninth.

I have a feeling that was a very drunk ride home for everyone on that bus trip. I know it would’ve been for me.

  2. MIKE Says:

checkout Brian Michael of PhilliesNation talking Phillies from my live broadcast http://www.nowlive.com/podcast/OpenPodcast.ashx?PodcastID=145886

  3. Dennis Says:

Bus trip was a good time outside of the Phils losing. Felt like a home game down there, definitely can’t wait til next year. Maybe I won’t hold up the bus after the game next time. As for the game…. Kendrick again kills us and I feel that that should be his final start this season. It’s crunch time now, every game is crucial…

  4. Tim Malcolm Says:

Drove back home this morning. My God am I tired. Thanks to everyone, again. The trip was an all-around (well, almost …) success.

  5. Geoff Says:

How was the ballpark? as good as advertised? im thinkin about rolling out to citifield next year

  6. Geoff Says:

kendrick was terrible yesterday, no doubt about it: its time to pull him. hes just declined drastically the past few weeks. somethings wrong. i think hes hit a wall and needs to develop further in order to stick around. happ, carrasco are the only real options at this point

  7. Don M Says:

Happ is getting on schedule to take Kendrick’s place in the rotation.. He’s hurting them now, so they need to sit him for at least one start

  8. VASteve Says:

Live in Virginia, share in a season plan at Nats Park. Was at the game yesterday and going tomorrow. Have been to CBP four times in the past two years. While Nats park is very nice, CBP is much better. Much more intimate, feels smaller, looks better, much more character.

No excuses for Kendrick, he was in trouble from pitch one yesterday. However, all season long the Phillies have not been able to do the little things well offensively. For example, hit the opposite way to move a runner. Sac fly to score a run. Put the ball in play, etc. etc. Happened again yesterday, we have a chance to score a few runs in the first inning. Would have changed to whole dynamic of the game. Can’t count how many times we have failed to do that this year. I bet this has cost us at least a half dozen victories.

Anyway …….. no excuses now, time to git er done!

  9. NEPA Says:

I’d start Happ next time out in Kendrick’s spot. Kendrick needs to develop an out pitch because he’s just letting people put it into play. Last year teams we’re just softly grounding out, but now they’re really starting to take it to him. I like Happ’s stuff a lot better.

  10. Geoff Says:

It looks nice. CBp still looks nicer, but PNC Park is still the best ballpark ive been to hands down. id like to visit nats park though.

  11. Geoff Says:

Pat Gillick pubilcly admitted yesterday that signing adam eaton was a mistake! ITS ABOUT TIME! time to get rid of him now.

  12. Eb Says:

Geoff where did you see that, WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY over due

  13. Dennis Says:

Yea CBP is definitely better. Nats park is nice as it should be it’s a brand new park but the atmostphere, food, and overall look of CBP blows Nats park out of the water.

  14. Tim Malcolm Says:

VASteve is pretty dead on. Nats Park is more spacious, which really doesn’t work for a team that draws maybe 20,000. No character either. Nothing distinguishes itself. It’s nice and clean, but it’s nowhere near a top park.

  15. river327 Says:

    ship kendrick to japan?!

  16. METS= 2 up Says:

    yeaaaaaaaaaaaaa baby

  17. METS= 2 up Says:

    according to ESPN-

    Mets 68.5 chance of playoffs

    Phils 35.6 chance of playoffs

    hehe :)

  18. Don M Says:

Out of the parks I’ve been to recently, I think I like Wrigley Field better than Fenway Park. PNC Park is awesome, and so is SanFrans park (not sure what its called now..) Camden Yards is great, both New York stadiums are dumps..

I want to see Jacob’s Field in Cleveland.. Dodger Stadium, Petco in San Diego.. Miller Park in Milwaukee..

I was at RFK, but haven’t been to the Nats new place yet, from what I’ve heard before-and-now.. its nothing too great

  19. Don M Says:

According to ESPN, their baseball experts picked every team that would make the playoffs today as the teams that will make it when the season is over. . . They really go out on a limb and are pretty realistic if they don’t think anything will change with like 25 games to play.

  20. METS= 2 up Says:

new york stadiums are dumps casue they are very old if you havent noticed

  21. VASteve Says:

METS= 2 up …… Whats casue mean? Anyway, good luck this weekend. Let me tell you again, here is how it is spelled ….. COLLAPSE

  22. Don M Says:

I know.. the Vet was a mess too.. The Mets new stadium is going to be cool. I think Yankee Stadium sucks.. its got nothing on Wrigley or Fenway

  23. Richie Says:

This Sunday’s game is going to be a very big game at Shea, and if Cole Hamels is not on the mound, I will pink slip Charlie myself. I do not want to hear any excuses. It is his regular rest and KK has looked horrendous recently, a deer in the headlights look. I cannot watch Charlie continue to make key situational managerial decisions that cripple this team. It is a disgrace.

  24. Matt Kwasiborski Says:

Hey guys- I live down here in the DC area in Alexandria. I read before that there is a Phils bar here but I am not sure where it is. Can someone tell me the name/location?

KK needs to go to the pen for Happ. One reason is KK’s poor starts lately. The other reason is that no one really has a solid scouting report on Happ at the major league level. This could work to his and the Phils advantage if he is given some starts down the stretch. I mean, KK cannot get it done. I like the guy but we need some wins now.

And the Phils need to trade for Tim Redding. He KILLS us every time; kind of like Steve Traschel used to. I mean we knock out the two best Cubs starters (albeit lose the games) but can NEVER touch Redding. Insane.

  25. Gabriel Says:

Hmmm, i wonder how many phillies phans go on metsnation and heckle their regs… probably none because we’re not total douchfags. mets = 7 up… was that your posting name last year?

  26. MIKE Says:

Ok folks if you listen for Tim and Brian they were guests on my marathon show heard on http://www.nowlive.com/PhillieBeermanTv and also my special guest was Jim Jackson who had some interesting things to say so check it out today.

  27. Two year old from Philly Says:

Hi. I am 2 years old. My dad says the Mets suck. He uses bad words and when we go to games, he fights people. When I go to games, I see shirts that say “F*ck” and watch drunk kids fight. They are not as bad as Eagles games because at least I don’t have to watch my Dad go to jail below the stadium. As a two year old, I already know that I am destined to act as my dad and his peers, which means I will cheer on my team when they win and boo them after each loss. I will love Jimmy Rollins one day and hate him the next. I will also curse and fight all out of town fans and make their lives miserable. Yes, that’s right, there is no hope for me. Generation after generation, fans will fall into line. I wish I could change it but that is how we are bred. And to all you people who will trash me for writing this- fuck you, you waste of life piece of shit cock sucker. I’ll kick your shitty New York ass and your little ugly kid’s ass too.

  28. NC Jason Says:

Yesterday on the radio LA slammed into Kendrick. He basically said that Kendrick had no stones and flat out sucked yesterday. He could not understand why Kendrick did nothing to change his pitch location or how Kendrick could not go out and shut down a crappy offense.

Happ has got to start – he can not be any worse.

  29. Don M Says:

Something that I’ve heard a few times now with Kendrick is that when he gets the ball back from the catcher, just gets his sign, and throws… he’s very good…. when he tries to think too much he gets into trouble.. and Dubee said again about his past start that Kendrick was hanging onto the ball too long. . . instead of just throwing it

  30. philsphan Says:

It’s time to put Happ, Carrasco, or even Carpenter into the rotation.

  31. Gabriel Says:

i’m all for happ, his two starts for us yielded positive results and he’s a fresh arm. i completely agree with the idea of no scouting report mentioned earlier. i’m not saying ’savior’ or anything but he could give us a chance to win.

  32. Joe Benzon Says:

Next year we should actually sit together like originally planned.

  33. Nick Staskin Says:

We all sat together amongst 104…although I switched seats about 30 times to get out of the blistering heat…

  34. concerned phils fan Says:

Myers, Moyer, and Kendrick vs. Peflrey, Martinez, and Santana

    were screwed!!

  35. J-Man Says:

It’s time to get Kendrick out of the rotation…He’s killing us.
