Odds And Ends: Myers, Marlins, Gordon, Draft

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, September 20, 2008 12:00 PM

Saturday reading and notes for you:

  • Last night Brett Myers suffered the worst start of his career, letting up 10 runs to the Marlins. Supposedly, Marlins players asked for Myers to cover up the tattoo on his left arm before the second inning. Myers:

“They were trying to get into my head. They don’t want to get in my head. Not too many people have been successful getting in there, besides myself.”

Great. Just what the Phils need to do — play stupid head games with the Marlins. Just win games.

  • More from the game — Cody Ross had the secret formula to beat Myers:

“He started off throwing his fastball and curveball. Then he got hit around and went into what we call a Jamie Moyer approach. He threw us a bunch of soft stuff, trying to get us to chase. I don’t know if he thinks we can’t hit curveballs or what. I guess he knows we’re a fastball-hitting team, and he tried to mix it up.”

This makes me a little nervous for Joe Blanton’s chances tonight. He relies on his fastball, and on guys to hit it to fielders. The Marlins will hit the fastball, but into the dark caverns of Dolphin Stadium. Blanton has to nibble tonight (to reiterate my “patience” theme).

  • Interesting bullet from Todd Zolecki’s notebook concerning Tom Gordon. He writes “Flash” threw from 120 feet and could return to the roster for the postseason if he makes enough progress.

I’ll be honest — when Gordon was 80 percent he wasn’t doing the job. Having him at 50 or 60 won’t really help in the playoffs. The eighth inning is a little problem, but not this bad.

It’s an awesome, extensive read. He basically says it’s the best Phils draft in sometime (most have said that), and thinks at least a few of the picks will turn into major leaguers. And if four or five players in your draft do that, boy, that’s a good draft. Check it out.

Little bit of an open thread today. I’ll be back before the game, but right now I’m breaking out the driver and teeing up. Call it a mental health afternoon before digging in to another installment of Phils-Fish.

This is an absolutely beautiful day meant to be spent outside if you can. We all probably need to clear our heads before tonite’s game, so I’m going out to swim a few laps, do a little late summer gardening, and just take advantage of this great weather. Later.

I’ll second the phuture phillies recommendation. That is a GREAT website.

  4. Mark Says:

Why do I get the feeling that we’ve seen the last ace-caliber performance by Myers? Easily the worst performance of his career.

  5. Griffin Says:

Most draft experts say that the Phils 2008 draft was high risk/reward. Some say they they should’ve played it safer with their top two picks (Hewitt/Collier), but only time will tell.

I don’t have a great feeling about the remaining two games with the Fish. They’ve won 9 in a row and still feel like they have a shot at this thing, but they NEED to sweep the Phils.

  6. » Myers Pummelled; Marlins Pound Phillies | Blogging-Baseball.com Says:

[...] The Marlins messing with Myers’ head regarding a barely visible tatoo on his glove hand didn’t help matters much either.  Although Myers didn’t seem to be effected in the 2nd through fourth innings by the Umpires’ absurd demand that he wear long sleeves, only his shrink might know for sure if the incident played a roll in Myers’ fifth inning collapse with the Phils holding a 6-5 lead.  This was easily Myers’ worst career start in a game that the Phillies needed.  It can only be hoped that we haven’t seen the last of the ace-caliber outings Myers has had since his brief stint in the minors.  [...]

I’m still pissed about the blanton trade. Boy would aj burnett look good pitching 2night

  8. Craig Says:

Nothing to do with the Phillies per say but it looks like the Brewers are going to pitch CC’s arm off in an attempt to get the wild card.

They’re pitching him on 3 days rest two consecutive times.

  9. Geoff Says:

except, you dont get aj burnett. youre not allowed to have the pitching you want and need..philadelphian

thats basically what they tell us: they just say no

  10. Craig Says:

Brewers falling apart. CC out of the game after 5.2 innings and 4R’s.

    Reads leading 4 – 2

  11. harry Says:

i so sick of the i hate the joe blanton trade talk. we were on burnett’s no trade list, and if he wanted to leave toronto so bad he would have been traded.

  12. harry Says:

the trade happened we have to deal with it. it’s in the past no going back now.
