Phillies Face Biggest Game Yet
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, September 24, 2008 02:24 PM
This is the biggest game of the year. No joke.
Brett Myers will pitch tonight, and the weight is on him. His last start was his career worst, a 10-run explosion by the Marlins from which Myers just could never recover. But before that, he had been untouchable. His second half ERA of 2.79 is still among the laegue’s best.
All that goes out the window tonight. All that matters is the game.
The best thing about Myers is he wants the ball in these big situations:
“I’ll pitch tomorrow. I don’t care. It doesn’t matter to me, if it gets us to the playoffs. Whatever it takes. If they ask me, then we’ll see.”
That was two weeks ago. Now he’s in that very situation. He has the ball with the playoffs straight ahead. And I want nobody else on the hill in this situation.
But it’s not all Myers. The offense has to be alive tonight. Feed off the crowd, get on base, work walks, make Jo-Jo Reyes throw everything, including the kitchen sink. I found last night’s crowd didn’t seem as hot as Monday’s crowd. Tonight the crowd has to be in that Monday mindset, waving towels every five seconds, standing, cheering. The offense will dictate how it goes. They need to set an early tone, and Myers has to do his job, and then some.

Yes, big game tonight. Also, the weather report says it’s going to rain from tomorrow through Sunday. I wonder how that will affect things in Philly and NY.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Seriously, what was up with the fans last night at CBP?
September 24th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
what? they were very supportive last night…there was nothing wrong with that…its a cold tuesday night…
September 24th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Let’s step on the throats of the Mets, and vitrually end this tonight.
I’m pumped, and hopefully we take the division so I don’t have to hear it from some of the scumbag-piig Mets fans at my job.
Is it me, or is every Mets fan a 315+ lb, sloppy, pastrami sandwich-eating, stained-shirt-wearing, loud, boisterous, unjustfully-proud dirtbag, with no respect for the game of baseball?
September 24th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Jo-Jo Reyes hasn’t won a game since June 10th 0 and 10. Lets jump on him early and often. Let’s go Zambrano too.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
im 5′11″ 165 pounds and have more respet for baseball than you will ever… i never rip phillies fans although i should considering i have been aggressively confronted by multiple fans whether at citizens bank or shea.. i udnerstand your hostility… ten playoff appearances since 1903?.. i would be upset, furious, aggressive, and confrontational if i was a phillies fan too.. unjustfully proud? my team has proved in its existence since 1962 that we can compete with the big boys, can make it to the postseason, and can resurge from the cellar of the nl to the top as well as bounce back froma devastating season to compete for the top spot especially after firing a manager midseason and being 7.5 games back… what do you have to be proud of.. multiple mvps and no playoff series wins in god knows how long? i went to school in south jersey, most of my best friends are phillies fans and i respect each and everyone of them.. it is people like you, however, that throw bottles and fists and curse and generalize a fan base.. you are the one that has no respect for the game or for other fans that appreciate it so much.. instead just animosity towards a team because no matter if you beat them or not.. you have over a hundred year chip on your shoulder regardless of any series wins… plus have u ever been to a phillies game before? switch the pastrami to a ginos wiz wit and you have the same exact fans in red instead of blue…
September 24th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Omar Minaya really getting a 4 year extension???? we’ll let you hop over to the Phillies fans side if you want.. cause the Muts are going nowhere in a hurry.. even in a much bigger market, with a much, much bigger payroll
September 24th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I’m 5′10, a buck sixty in case anyone was wondering.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Holy S., I agree that Mets fans and Phillies fans are similar in their passion, etc. Philadelphia fans are no saints, but New York fans are not that much better. I’ve lived in NY all my life and most fans are nice, but there are duchebags in both cities.
Also, let’s not go crazy praising your franchise. You’ve won 2 World Series but got embarassed in the 2000 world series by your big brother.
But I agree that generalizations of fan bases are petty.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
are you really going to say that your front office is better than ours? cmon… not one phillies fan on here can truly believe that in their heart of hearts… and i only know that because of talking to phillies fans on a daily basis and reading this message board.. so lets be realistic here guy.. signing santana was a terrible move right? bringing up daniel murphy and nick evans? terrible… not his fault our bullpen underperforms.. he cant throw the ball for em… i wont take ur colors but i would like to take romero of ur roster and onto ours for the duration of the season
September 24th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
re-signing Alou and El Duque, letting Chad Bradford go, giving Luis Castillo 4 years, giving an aging closer a 4th year, counting on Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman, knowing that the mets bullpen stinks and only trading for Luis Ayala at the deadline.
You’re right, Omar’s resume is impeccable. Also, good job trading Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips for a rental of Bartolo Colon. That didn’t set the Expos/Nats franchise back at all.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Your pitching staff… both rotation and bullpen suck, guy.
Im not going to lie and say that I think we have a great front-office.. we don’t… I will say that Gillick has done a hell of a job adding pieces the past 3 years, and with the Mets extra money would have put togehter a 100-win team by now.
Our owners are in the business of making money, not winning World Series titles.. but our homegrown talent is what makes this team so solid, and the rest has been added, in mostly solid moves, by the Front Office, guy..
You can’t honestly be happy if Minaya gets an extension.. same way I won’t be happy if we hire Amaro as the next GM..
September 24th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I wouldn’t say the Mets were embarassed in 2000. They faught hard against a frankly, much better Yankees club. But it is true that both fan bases have their good fans and their bad. I was surprised when I went to a Phillies/Nats game wearing my Santana jersey and didn’t get bothered too much. I find that if you knock off the name calling and just talk baseball, both fans are rather pleasant to talk to. True, Mets fans can be punks but Phillies fans can too…but i’ll take them ANY day over Yankee fans
Either way, it’ll be a great last 4 games.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
castillo, alou, and el duque ill give to you.. except for the fac thtat alou was insanely good when not on the dl.. castillo is a cancer… sanchez and heilman i dont agree with for the fact that they were solid for a long whille.. and i couldnt really care about what he did on the expos/nats.. i think his biggest text is fixing our bullpen in this offseason and then ill judge.. and realistically we can always just fire him… trust me though.. when you have had steve phillips as your gm anyone looks incredible
September 24th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Holy S. I hate to burst your bubble but there is no way I’d want Omar Minaya as my GM. I’d take the Mets ownership which spends the money, but thats about it. Minaya has had everything and made plenty of mistakes that have cost this team big. Um…..Randolph……Alou……Beltran. Thats the reason the Mets aren’t as good as they should be, lots of money and some really bad signings. If Delgado didn’t do what he did in the second half he would be just as bad a signing as well. Oh yeah don’t forget about Castillo and Pedro too. I’m not saying the Phillies front office is great, but I certainly don’t want the Mets either.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
when you have a very good offense (2nd best in the NL), the best pitcher in baseball and 2 other good starters and you do NOTHING at the deadline to improve your one glaring weakness, you have to be second guessed. Minaya gambled that adding Luis Ayala would be enough and he did not want to part with any prospects for the Brian Fuentes of the world.
Also, when you say “i coudn’t really care about what he did on the expos/nats” that’s the same things Knicks fans did when they hired Isiah after he ran the CBA into the ground.
I guess my big question is “what has Omar really done well?” I’ll give him credit for John Maine for Benson and for trading for Santana (after the Yankees backed out) and not giving up his best prospect Fernando Martinez. But he does have the 3rd highest payroll in baseball and doesn’t get any blame for last year while Willie Randolph is fired this year. He’s the one that hired Willie, but Willie is home and Omar is here for four more years.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
And KM, by the way, totally unecessary to call Mets fan scum-bag pigs, we love our Mets just as much as you love your Phillies
September 24th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Beltran? hes really good in case you havent noticed… Don M… our rotation sucks? Santana Perez and Pelfrey? Our rock is the best pitcher in the NL.. yours is a guy who got sent down to the minors and gave up 10 runs his last start.. thats a ridiculous comment.. and if u noticed after willie was fired all has been better with minaya still on… we didnt have much to give up at the deadline for any of our needs, and there wasnt much bullpen help out there that was remotely affordable especially if we arent going to give up our best prospects.. ill take minaya until he completely destroys the team which doesnt seem to be happening anytime soon
September 24th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
What a weird non-sequitor by Holy S.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Seriously dude 5′11 165, eat a sandwich or lay off the H-Train.
What has Omar Minaya done to dseserve four years
September 24th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
well.. the first NL east title in over 14 years… an NLCS and getting the best pitcher in baseball… apparently the players love him and he has a great rapport with other front offices.. again realistically money isnt an issue and if he proves us wrong we can always fire him.. hes done nothing to prove to me otherwise…and ill take my chances on the H-Train because as small as I am im stil not a pussy… and i will continue to see games at citizens bank because well, the only thing about being a phillies fan thats better than being a mets fan is the extreme amount of hot young female ass that for some reason flocks to that stadium…
September 24th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
The only thing good about being a Mets fan is you guys don’t have any shame about soiling yourselves.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
ENOUGH WITH THE METS TALK! 4 game left…. The table is set, time to man up and stop making excuses Phils and do this! Win tonight, off tomorrow, win a couple this weekend and we are in. It’s the day of the biggest day of the season and we are sitting here talking about dumbass Omar Minaya. I’ll be there tonight and I’ll be bringing the NOISE! LETS GO PHILS!!!
September 24th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Since when are we stating eating habits and physical size of the mets fans who write in here….but since its so funny…keep it up..
September 24th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
I jsut wanted to say I am 6′5 245lbs and know Karate
September 24th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Go talk about the Mets somewhere else! This is Phillies territory and tonight we have a big game (NOT AGAINST THE METS, by the way). GO PHILS!
September 24th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Do yourself a favor Holy S., go to a Mets blog buddy, so you can go talk about your choke artist of a franchise that has an endless bankroll and sewer of a ballpark, but still cough their lunch up every September and then cry…..even better why don’t you go try-out for the bullpen, I’m sure you couldn’t do much worse.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
very true, go Phils! I heard it’s gonna rain the next few days which should mess up rotations, etc. We need to win tonight and root for Zambrano so we don’t even have to worry about Sunday’s game. Let’s go Myers, big game!
September 24th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
I’m going to the next 3 games, extremely pumped. Jo Jo Reyes is complete garbage and I am cautiously optimistic about tonight. Myers usually tells us everything we need to know about how he’ll pitch in the 1st inning, so hopefully he goes 1,2,3 with a K, feeds off the crowd, and coasts the rest of the way…
September 24th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
I kept on thinking so what that Burrell fouled out, was tagged out, and Victorino caught stealing. We always have the 7th, 8th & 9th. I was a bit shock at the Braves relief. I agree that fans were not jumping around as much last night but they should have been because it was cold. I was in a Phillies short sleeve shirt and I wanted to jump and down. I couldn’t use the towel because it was stuff in my shirt for warmth. I’m wearing a sweat shirt tonight. All the Phillies should have hot chili pepper steak hoagies before getting on the field tonight.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Hey I’m a METS fan but honestly i’d love to see a METS-PHILLIES NLCS. Here’s to a great rest of the week. and lets stop all the name calling and appreciate baseball.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I’m all for the Mets/Phillies NLCS!
September 24th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
MetsgirlinPA is your name bria?
September 24th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Mets -Phills…its would be very interesting..
But we have to concentrate on tonight
Go Phils
September 24th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Citizens Bank Park was just evacuated because of “suspicious packages” with police all over the place. They’re talking about it on DNL.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Which ended up being “supplies accidnetally left behind by a hot dog vender…”
September 24th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Jo Jo Reyes is 0-7 with a 7.79 ERA in his last 12 appearances. This guy is a gonad, we need to crush him tonight.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
so what is this about a bomb scare at the ball park?
September 24th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I live in DC and have tickets to Friday and Saturday games. I’m hoping all the rain just moves up to Thursday to avoid rain delays!
September 24th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Everything is fine. They found 3 “suspcisious packages” wrapped in duck tape with metal and wires. Turned out to be supplies for a hot dog vender (including hot dogs).
September 24th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Those hotdogs are like lethal weapons in ur stomach
September 24th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Met’s fans . . . I apologize to the Met’s fans that are not 315+ lb, sloppy, pastrami sandwich-eating, stained-shirt-wearing, loud, boisterous, unjustfully-proud dirtbag, with no respect for the game of baseball. I was just venting over a few choice fans whom I have no respect for. It was unfair for me to lump everyone together. There are many fans that are exceptions to the rule, and I apologize to them. . . . I still hate the Mets, and the Yankees for that matter. Have fun with the Cubs in round one.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Myers is off to quite the start.
September 25th, 2008 at 4:34 am
Yeah, and he quite an end too. In any given start, which Brett Myers will we see??
