Phillies Vs. Mets: The Final Chapter

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, September 05, 2008 03:26 PM

September 5, 2008: The night that begins the end for the Phillies.

Instead of writing some rich tapestry about this gigantic weekend series against the Mets, I’ll leave it brisk and open the floor.

Here’s what the Phillies need to do to win these games:

Go deep. Brett Myers and Cole Hamels should go into the seventh inning Friday and Sunday. Both have proven they can handle the ball and the pressures of these games. The key is Jamie Moyer, who hasn’t proven himself to be a 7-and-out guy this season.

Hit early. If the Phillies can maximize damage against Mets starters early, they’ll have it much easier. Why? The bullpen will be called upon earlier. Jimmy Rollins needs to continue his hot hitting. From there, it’ll be up to the Chase Utleys and Jayson Werths of the world to make it count.

Run. If the Phils do one thing well against the Mets all the time, it’s steal bags. Shane Victorino needs to get on base and fly. Give Greg Golson some big late moments. And of course, Jimmy’s legs are huge.

Nail the eighth. As I wrote earlier, I think JC Romero is your guy in the eighth. He was made for these games. If he’s cemented for that role, everything else falls well into place.

Now, what do you think? What do the Phils need to do to win these three games? And how do you see this series faring? If you’re interested, my heart says 2-of-3. My brain says 1-of-3.

The Phils’ need to work the counts with the Mets’ starting pitchers so they can get into the bullpen as early as possible. The Mets’ bullpen has thrown something like 17 straight scoreless innings coming into the series, but facing the Phillies’ bats who always own them is going to be a different story. The more Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman we see, the better the Phils will be.

This is it. Win or go home. I didnt think the season was going to come down to these three games. The only other thing we have to for is the wild card. I know im having a party to watch the game tonight, win or loose it will all be a blur. My heart says 3 game sweep. My brain says 2 of 3. I have a feeling the players are really going to step up this weekend.

  3. Dennis Says:

I do think the Phils take two outta three this weekend in Shea. Maybe it’s because I’m a Phils fan and I just wanna set myself up for more disapointment but it just seems like whenever this team is down they get back up! It’s not just one or two players that needs to step up either, it’s the whole team. They won the division last year cause they played as a team and I believe the time is now and they will respond to the adversity. We will always be with this team through thick and thin so lets all stop with this “the end” bullshit and believe that this team will play up to their potential for the first time in 3 months. Go Phils!

  5. President of Mets Nation Says:

  6. Eb Says:

  7. ped Says:

    sweep those muts!

  8. Dennis Says:

    Hey Mr President,
Are all Mets fans all Douchebags like you? How are we the ones choking?

  9. Real Mets Fan Says:

For all Phillies Phans. Believe me, there will be NO sweep this series. At the end of these next three games, the METS will be up by 2 games or by 4 games. That means one of the teams will win 2 of 3. As a met fan I am very comfortable leaving this series with a 2 game lead. As Phillie fans are you, or is a sweep the only option. For the Mets, they don’t need a sweep.

  10. Wilson Says:

Balls to the wall and sweep those Muts!!!!!

  11. DAVE Says:

Do you stupid Phillie fans need to be reminded that you’ve lost 10 of 15 against the Mets this year, and that you’re also coming off a series loss to the NATIONALS??? Wasn’t it just 48 hours ago the season was over for you guys, now all of a sudden you’re going to sweep the hottest team in baseball? What planet do you people live on???

  12. UpStateMetFan_Paranoid Says:

It’s only 6:07 PM and my nervous tick is in full bloom. I hope the Mets win 2 of 3 but …well, you know… This is the Mets we are talking about.

  13. Manny Says:

My brain and my heart says we’re going 3 for 3.

  14. KM Says:

The Phils need to be patient at the plate and get the bullpen in the game fast.

In my opinion they have to win 3/3 and put the mets on the ropes, ready for another collapse down the stretch.

  15. Ryk Says:

Huge catch there. Having Reyes in scoring position with no outs woulda been scary.
