Sunday’s Starter Yet Undetermined

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, September 10, 2008 01:57 PM

The Phillies wil likely go with Jamie Moyer Thursday against Milwaukee, according to Kevin Horan of MLB.com.

Todd Zolecki, in trying to map out the rotation, is looking ahead to Sunday. He mentioned giving Kyle Kendrick another go, or pitching JA Happ, or even Adam Eaton. Then he brought up either Brett Myers on three-days rest or go with the bullpen the whole day.

My thoughts:

Kendrick: No. He has exhausted his chances. They need wins.
Happ: The best option (even though the Brewers are hitting .275 against lefties). Rest him until Sunday and give him the ball.
Eaton: Hahaha. No.
Myers: I’m not totally against it, but three-days rest is not good.
Bullpen group: Yeah, big game and we’re throwing Clay Condrey and Rudy Seanez out there early.

The only other good idea besides Happ would be to bring up Carlos Carrasco or Andrew Carpenter for a start, but both are as inexperienced as Condrey is futile. So really, it’s Happ or bust Sunday.

2 hours until game time…you guys pumped or what?
Should be a good pitching match up….both Myers and Nolasco pitching well lately

  2. I know Sal.. Says:

I’d say Myers is pitching a little bit better than “well”.

  3. Phillies are our bitches Says:

    sorry….pitching very well

  4. Eb Says:

Myers needs to stay off the fastball, these guys are dead fastball hitters. I am calling for 10Ks today.

  5. R.Mac Says:

3rd best pitcher in baseball since being called back up.

Oh and you know how cats’ tails go all big and bushy when they are threatened? That’s how I feel when i see Adam Eaton mentioned. That and I feel the urge to grab a heavy object and find him so I can dismember his pitching arm.

  6. Durbinator Says:

I am more worried about Moyer on 3 days rest than whoever is going to start Sunday. Don’t get me wrong, Moyer has been awesome this season, but usually he has 5 days rest and only occasionally the normal 4 days rest. He hasn’t pitched on 3 days rest in over 2 years.

Happ should just take Kendrick’s spot in the rotation for the rest of the season. It’s only 3 more starts and Happ is already lined up to take that spot anyway after last night. He can’t be worse than Kendrick and then don’t have anybody better. I have heard that Carrasco is shut down anyway so it doesn’t seem like he is even an option.

  7. Phillies are our bitches Says:

serious question….whatever happened to Kris Benson?

  8. Bruce Says:

I suspect Manuel wants experience before youth in such a crucial game on Sunday. Don’t be surprise if it’s Kendrick…. or oh no…Eaton!

  9. R.Mac Says:

    Benson got released.

  10. Georgie Says:

Jeez, can you really be throwing these guys out there on 3 days rest this time of year, especially Moyer? It’s troubling, to say the least.

  11. Jim Says:

They released Benson last week. I’m a fan of Carrasco…see how he does, with Happ ready to come out of the pen if he gets into trouble at all. Lets see how Carlos does in a pressure situation.

  12. jeff Says:

BRING UP CARRASCO. i really dont get this. Its not like he’s going to the Arizona Fall League. Presumably he’s still in the united states. He’s much much better than kendrick and probably better than happ. no reason he shouldnt start tomorrow or sunday.

  13. PhillyFriar Says:

Happ’s definitely the best option. His line as a starter this year is solid if unspectacular (11 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 8 BB, 8 K), and even though it’s the predominantly RHB Brewers, Happ actually has a reverse split thanks to his changeup (LHB .245 BAA, RHB .229 BAA at Lehigh Valley this year).

If not Happ, then I honestly think Carrasco’s the next best option. He has to be placed on the 40-man this offseason anyway, and while I’d rather not expose him to a pennant race while he’s still developing, he’s a far better option than Kendrick, Eaton and the like.

Just because he used to play.. this ties in….. CURT SCHILLING is maybe the most annoying person in “Sports” …

    from cnnsi.com:

It’s a shame Curt Schilling’s contract incentives are based on the pitches he throws on the mound instead of the nonsense that comes out of his mouth. The loudmouth Red Sox starter, who is sidelined for the entire 2008 season following shoulder surgery, sounded off on New York’s sports fans for reveling in the fact Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will miss the entire season. “The euphoria in New York is palpable,” Schilling told WEEI Radio in Boston. “The Yankees suck this year and they are bitter and mad and making excuses over that. Now they got Tom going down so New York’s excited. It’s unfortunate, but when you crawl to the top of the pile you will have people trying to knock you down.” Not quite the top – Schilling apparently forgot the Giants own the Lombardi Trophy after beating Brady and the Patriots in last year’s Super Bowl. After blasting New York fans for being enthused over Brady’s injury, Schilling took the time to remind Pinstriped loyalists he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks when they beat the Yankees in the 2001 World Series. “I was front row and center when their ‘dynasty’ ended,” Schilling said.

  15. Real Mets Fan Says:

I don’t mean to gloat. But correct me if I’m wrong. Is it true that the Mets Shitty bullpen that the Phillies decimate, is currently in lock down mode only allowing 1 earned run in 25 innings. Is it also true that the once mighty Phillies bullpen can’t pitch out of a paper bag. Hmmm.. just wondering, this is not a good time for the phillies bullpen to suck nuts. Especially since the Phillies starting pitchers(with the exception of Jamie he just knows how to pitch Moyer) Suck even worse nuts. My, how things have turned for the Phillies. OUCH.

  16. christopher Says:

if the bullpen got the start it would almost certainly be durbin out there to begin and try to take it 3 innings, then condrey, then the usual suspects to close it out. seanez would not be in that role unless in the 7-8-9 for a few outs or an inning.

i think carrasco is the best bet here. see what he can do. there’s really no downside to it, if he gets shelled, so? it’s one start for a very young pitcher. as long as they don’t have him hang around in the bullpen afterwards and mess with his head, it’ll be fine.

  17. Don M Says:

If you are counting on Ayala, Heilman, etc… to be more effective down the stretch than Lidge, Durbin, Romero… I wish you the best of luck, you’ll need it

Please excuse my good friend, he occasionally makes sense but just not tonight…

  20. NJ Says:

Haven’t done the maths yet myself but a friend has and aparently after sunday the Phils can go to a 4 man rotation with the need for only a couple of spot starts, don’t quote me on that though as I haven’t checked it yet myself.

  21. Ryk Says:

Bad idea having the pen make a start for the Phils on Sunday. There may not be any better alternatives, but I’d rather go with an unproven youngster for 1 game than ruin our bullpen for at least 3 or 4. The Phils are finally getting their bullpen rested up after the last few weeks. The last thing they need is to over-use them again and having them blow close games in the late innings. Yes, an unproven young starter may blow the game for them. But it’s 1 game. Having a fatigued bullpen can blow far more than 1, as we all have noticed the past few weeks. Bah, not a good time of year to be having this kind of problem.

  22. Manny Says:

Just put a random guy on Thursday. Give Moyer 4-days rest, let him win the game on Friday. Give Hamels 5-day rest, and win on Saturday. And we’ll be back on track.
