The Hamels Must Pitch Vs. Mets Post
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, September 03, 2008 12:36 PM
While Cole Hamels gets well-deserved accolades across the media today, talk is shifting to the three-game weekend set against the Mets at Shea Stadium. The matchups are as such:
Friday – Brett Myers (8-10, 4.40) vs. Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.66)
Saturday – Jamie Moyer (12-7, 3.80) vs. Pedro Martinez (5-3, 5.07) [may not start]
Sunday – TBA vs. Johan Santana (12-7, 2.71)
The Phillies are still “undecided” on a starter, but Charlie Manuel has expressed what he wants to do:
“I want to put Hamels on the Mets. This time of the year, we’ve got to win some of those games over there in New York.”
It’s painfully obvious that in the last game of the season against your top rival, the team you’re chasing for first place, in their home, in mid September, with 20 games to go, with an international audience on Sunday Night Baseball, against one of the best pitchers in baseball … you get it, the Phillies have to start Hamels.
There is no debate. He gets the rest day tomorrow. Unleash him.

Absolutely, cole MUST start on sunday. if he doesnt want to start on sunday hes a fraud. you stand up to santana and match him scoreless inning for scoreless inning until you win. dont you dare back away from this one cole, your teammates need you on sunday. let the rotation cycle back around and you can slide happ or carrasco in there to fill the gap left by kendrick being sat down for a while.
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Agreed, he needs to start, especially since we havent picked up any games on the Mets like I thought we would with them going against the Brewers and us against the Nats.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
I also agree that Hamels will start, and I think he will start unless he doesn’t think he can do it. But its regular rest so I think he will end up pitching that game.
I would like to see Carrasco or Happ take Kendrick’s place in the rotation. I think it will be Happ, but either Happ or Carrasco can’t be worse than Kendrick’s last 5 starts (1-3 with a 9.14 ERA) or even Kendrick’s last 9 starts (3-5 with a 6.45 ERA).
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I have tickets to Sunday night’s game and if it’s Johan vs. Kendrick, I’ll just leave in the 3rd inning when we’re down 7-1. Hamels must start.
Also, I wouldn’t mind Happ or Carrasco in Kendrick’s rotation spot.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Hamels has to get it done for us on Sunday. I have faith in Myers, and Moyer will go either way (but he is facing Pedro who doesn’t have much left in the tank). Hamels needs to step up for this one, it’s make or break time. Have to at least win the series.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
philsphan~ Carrasco is not on the roster and that includes the call ups for September. If Kendrick struggles in his next start, your wish to see Happ start may come true.
In regards to the question of whether or not Hamels will start on Sunday vs the Mets, latest team report….
“.. If Hamels pitches Sunday night, he will be making his third straight start with the requisite four days of rest between starts. But Hamels, who has a checkered injury history, often prefers having an extra day. And without another off day until Sept. 15, he’d have to make a fourth consecutive start on regular rest Sept. 12 against the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.
“That’s something he hasn’t done (for) four starts in a row all year long,” pitching coach Rich Dubee said. “You have to take that into consideration. And he’s sitting on (a National League-leading 203) innings right now, too.”
His pitch count before being lifted in the 8th inning was substantial with 104 pitches. However, he cruised during most of the game last night without struggles and that may be in his favor for Manuel’s important decision prior to Sunday’s game.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
it sounds like hamels is SCARED to pitch against the mets lately…im going to call him out on it. this is a must-win series.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Listen Geoff … your time is up my time is now you cant see me my time is now its the franchise but im shining now you cant see me my time is now in case you fell off remember i will knock your block off a solider stright thugging thunder and lighting.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Batista was 3 seconds better then me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Yea, there’s no debate on this one. Hamels MUST start, I’ll lose faith in this entire team if he doesn’t.
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Hamels must start vs. the Mets. It is an absolute must! The Mets are playing great ball right now and we must win 2 of 3 games in this upcoming series. A tall order based on how they have dominated us this season. The Phillies need him to step up to the plate and perform to the best of his ability. Cole, if you do not start, IMHO you are nothing but a coward!
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Even Charlie wants him to go on sunday…dont worry he will start..
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:01 pm
I’m sure I heard that Cole does lead the league in innings pitched, but not in # of pitches, since he runs alot of low counts on hitters.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
It’s a no brainer, there’s an argumement that most of Cole’s starts have been made on 5 days rest and he has pitched an incredible number of innings but in a game of this importance you put your best guy out there. Nothing against the kid but considering Moyer wont pitch in the Fish series it’s essential to have Cole go against Santana.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:14 pm
The Mets are up 5-0 in Milwaukee. It’s only the first inning.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
6-0
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Dave Mush, the only 5a starter in the league.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
whoa whoa whoa…lets get the Natties and take the first two off the Mets first. Priorities, priorities. When we are 1 UP, then yes, Hamels it is.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I’m attending all three games against the Phils this weekend. Isn’t it fun to have a rivalry that’s worthwhile to bask in in the NL East?
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
The screen is burning my eyes… I can’t see. Must write more. Whats that? Mets are up 6-0 in the top of the 1st? I can’t go on… must sleep…
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Let’s not forget that Milwaukee is reachable, too. 4 GB on them going into tonight IF the Mets can hold the lead. 92 Ws does it. 16-7 from here.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
NEPA remember what you said yesterday that the brew crew was gonna kick the crap out of the mets……how you feel?
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I thought Milwaukee was good this year…Geeeez …no help at all from them now..but wait ,they will perk up when we play them next week
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Remember ladies and gentlemen, the Cubs come into Shea for four games late in September.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
The cubs will have probably clinched by then.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
yea they do but like sumone said they would clinch by then meaning mostly all cubs starters would take off MOSTLY and still we could beat the cubs i mean wow we about to sweep the brewers
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
well, if we win tonight, we’ll only be 3.5 behind Milwaukee with 4 games against them in our building. Plus, Sheets is going to miss his next start.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
You thought the Brewers were good this year? Braniac – they are good. Did it ever occur to you that the Mets are good also? Maybe even better and clicking at the right time? Their lineup is cranking out many more runs than the Phils as of late. But as a typical Philly fan…I know that kills you, so keep discrediting the opposition.
And 4 vs the Cubs at Shea is a non factor. They will be resting most their starters, and will have clinched by then. Furthermore, you split with them at Wrigley. Mets can split or take 3 of 4 at home…don’t see it as a big deal.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Anyone think the Brewers are the 07 Mets and will blow their Wildcard lead?
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:35 pm
If the Brewers blow their wild card lead to the Phils.. that means the Phils play the Cubs in the first round… that’s a tough job.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Again the Mets are winning so the Trolls come out.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
this is strange. but for some reason, even though i think this team might be worse than it was last year, they may just fare better. i have a strange feeling of them boggling our minds in a positive way and maybe win a series before getting desroyed, badly, by someone. i dont think they will, but im starting to have wierd gut feelings about it.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Richie Allen is a bitter individual.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
No, Geoff, that’s just gas.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Bruce: Get freaking TJ Bohn off the 40 man roster and you have room for Carrasco. There are plenty of other guys who don’t belong on the 40 man roster. If the Phillies want to bring him up, they can. The 40 man roster is not much of an obstacle if you really want a guy to play for you.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
could be….i did have some chili cheese jalapeno extra hot keilbasa for lunch today.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
why is TJ bohn even on the 40-man roster?
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
We need Milwaukee to do something other than lay down and die today
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Here’s a thought! What the hell are we gonna do if Moyer loses on Sat and Hamels gets knocked out in the 5th on Sun. what are we going to build on then? You just gave away everything in a desperation move. J. Happ is the right move here because he’s fresh and has a good arm.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
This Mets/Brewers series is potentially a preview of the NLDS…….That said, this can actually hurt the Mets in the long run because the Brewers will come after them with guns blazing.HOWEVER it may all change if the Phils sweep them after facing the Amazins this weekend. If Mets/Phils play up to their potential…….we COULD have a Mets/Phillies NLCS which is what I prefer.Could the Blue Crew falter ala the 2007 Mets? That is possible.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I want a Hamels/Santana match up for Sunday.I think we all need to know now if Hamels is tough enough to face a potentially volatile situation that could put the Phils in a race,or is it the last act of desparation.I want the Mets to face what is the best Starter/Ace in the Phils so everyone can gauge if he is a man or mouse.IF he opts not to pitch, than he sealed his fate.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I would love to see a phillies mets NLCS that would be amazin lets go mets
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
This is exactly why you play the game right here. To get to october 162 games to come down to a matchup between to of the best lefties in the leauge. Coles gota stop girlin
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Oh ya and can we still trade kendrick to Japan?
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Come on now guys..You make it seem like Santana is God-like or some shit. We matched Kendrick Vs Santana last series, and luckily the Mets Bullpen saved their ass that game. It’s not Santana I’m worried about, it’s Tatis. I do however agree Hamels need to get this start though, just because it’ll be more balanced.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
With the exception of his last start against the Phillies, in which he still pitched well enough, Santana has owned us this year. Plain and simple.
I fear him far more than Fernando Tatis.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I fear the unknown.
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I fear Delgado the most…
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
How did you have time to eat me with all the blogging you do?
September 3rd, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Your an idiot if ur more worried about tatis than santana
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm
[...] brings you “The Hamels Must Pitch Versus the Mets Post”. Well [...]
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Hamels is the biggest pussy and not an ace if he doesn’t want to go up against Santana on Sunday.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:14 pm
On a random, the Mark Kotsay… Shame he wasn’t available on waivers (cough cough)
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Boo hoo, Hamels has pitched 204 innings. Isn’t that the object of being a starting pitcher? Get your butt out there and try to stop the Mets and Santana. There was a time when starting pitchers threw 300+ innings a year. Stop babying Mister China Doll – if you’re the ace then act like one.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Get them out, Mets fans.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Three outs away from a sweep in Milwaukee. Gotta had it to them, they’ve had an amazing road trip since the meltdown last Tuesday.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I heard Joe Kerrigan explain why starters don’t usually pitch complete games anymore. He said today’s starter throws an average of 3 more pitches per inning than they did 20 years ago, so if you extrapolate that over a season using 7 innings for an average starter, that’s like 600 more pitches in a 30 game season. That being said, I think Cole needs to quit worrying about the “toll” on his body and get his butt out there.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Just announced on DNL that Cole is pitching on Sunday.
September 3rd, 2008 at 5:05 pm
if hamels refuses to make the start sunday against the mets than that proves to me that the phillies have to never sign him to a long term deal because he will officially be a primadonna/diva/pussy.
September 3rd, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Wow, you guys are harsh. Give Hamels a break. Chill out Ryan.
September 3rd, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I was just wondering was the trip you fans were taking on the short yellow buses to washington for a Nations game today or did that happen already? I wanted to also say that your team gave a good fight this year for the post season but because the central is strong that will keep them out this year. Maybe we can build a rivelry between the Mets and Phillies in the future it would be fun but the Phillies have to be good for a while and that just had not happened yet. Maybe next year! And maybe next year you will see Pat the Bat in a Mets Jersey? wouldn’t that be special!
September 3rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Pat Burrell in a Mets jersey? Phillies fans would be salivating because everybody and their mother knows Burell shows up VS the Mets and lays down like a dog vs everyone else.If available, get Larry Jones from the Braves for left field.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Why would you fear Santana more than Tatis? We only have to face Santana once this series…On the other hand, we face Tatis 9 innings of a 3 series ball game. For those who don’t know, Tatis was their savior this year. He gave the Mets the extra spark they needed to be where they are. I can tell you right now, he is going to win the comeback player of the year award…Hands down.
