This Game Was Made For Moyer

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, September 21, 2008 12:11 PM

It’s a Sunday afternoon at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The Phillies are inching closer to an assured second consecutive playoff berth. The young Marlins await in the home clubhouse. Who would you want holding the baseball for the road grays today?

The answer is clear.

Today is the sort of game Jamie Moyer was made to pitch. We all know about his track record against Florida (10-1, 3.07 ERA, 42 K, 17 BB). But with such a crucial game, the Phils will turn to their veteran stopper, their studious expert of conquering the game. Though Moyer recorded his first loss against the Fish his last time out, he limited them to two earned runs over five innings. That’s the kind of start the Phils will need today. Like Joe Blanton yesterday, Moyer will need to pitch carefully and not worry about an aging pitch count. If anyone does that well, it’s No. 50.

Today’s game doesn’t quite compare with Sept. 30, 2007, the day the Phils won the NL East last season. But for sure, the game is huge in solidifying the Phils’ place in the postseason run. And against one of the Phils’ biggest rivals, out in the middle of the swamps of Florida, no man is more appropriate to bring respite than Mr. Moyer.

    Philet the Phish! Go Phils!

Moyer owns the Marlins. Hopefully he can continue that.

Moyers slow pitching is a perfect style to silence aggressive Marlins…
