Tonight Is Hamels’ Proving Ground

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, September 23, 2008 04:26 PM

Tonight could be the final start of the season for Cole Hamels.

Hamels now has 220.1 innings of work this season, almost 50 more than his 2007 total. He’ll be making his 33rd start, easily a career high. And his numbers are pretty good — 3.10 ERA, 1.076 WHIP, 189 K, 52 BB. Definitely Cy Young worthy.

This has been Hamels’ best campaign yet, and to put a stamp on 2008 with a big win over Atlanta would cap off a remarkable year. The surprise of Jamie Moyer and sudden comeback of Brett Myers have been the big stories in the rotation, but Hamels has ever been consistent, keeping his ERA in the three range while accumulating strikeouts and getting seven innings.

We question if Hamels is winding down, what with his most recent starts that haven’t eclipsed the seven-frame mark. But Hamels is now in uncharted territory. That said, it’s imperative he goes deep tonight. Then the next time he pitches. And the next.

We talk about aces. We say Myers has shown to be an ace. We even say Moyer has proven to be an ace this season. Well, Hamels may be succumbing to the late season blues, but now it’s time for him to step up and get it done. Go seven. Go eight. Go nine. Do it tonight.

wouldn’t it be awful (relatively of course) if they clinched the division by the mets losing on thursday night, when they don’t have a game? what kind of clinching celebration happens in a case like that?

  4. T Marty Says:

Hopin’ he gets 11 Ks tonight!
ah, a win will be just fine.

Hamels struck out 13 in eight innings in that Friday game against the Nats last year. Howard hit a two-run jack and the Mets lost to the Marlins.
It was nuts in the ballpark that night and it makes me wish I could be there tonight.

  6. Griffin Says:

Jeffrey, I was there too, you’re right it was awesome that night. Everyone was listening to the end of the Mets-Marlins game in their cars coming out of the parking lots after the game. When the fish got the final out, everyone was honking their horns and going crazy. Good times.

  7. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Nate……I’m sure the team will either be at CBP in Their clubhouse or at a holiday inn somewhere in King of Prussia. But you guys will celebrate.

  12. Richie Says:

I love Myers and I love Moyer, but if we had our backs against the wall and had to throw one guy for one game. Mr. Cole Hamels would be on the bump. End of Story!!

i’ll be there wearing my hamels shirt proudly tonight. this will be the 3rd straight game i’ve gone to he’s pitched at, and i think the 4th i’ve been to this year with him on the mound. win us a big one tonight cole train!
